1 Yahvé dit à Moïse:	1 And the people set out from Hazeroth, and they pitched their tents in the desert of Paran.
2 “Envoie des hommes en avant pour qu’ils explorent ce pays de Canaan que je donne aux Israélites. Chaque tribu enverra en son nom l’un de ses chefs.”	2 And there, the Lord spoke to Moses, saying:
3 Moïse les envoya donc depuis le désert de Paran sur l’ordre de Yahvé. Tous ces hommes étaient chefs en Israël.	3 “Send men, who may examine the land of Canaan, which I will give to the sons of Israel, one from the rulers of each tribe.”
4 Voici leurs noms, Pour la tribu de Ruben, Chammoua, fils de Zakour;	4 Moses did what the Lord had commanded, sending, from the desert of Paran, leading men, whose names are these:
5 pour la tribu de Siméon, Chafat, fils de Hori;	5 from the tribe of Ruben, Shammua the son of Zaccur;
6 pour la tribu de Juda, Caleb, fils de Yéfouné;	6 from the tribe of Simeon, Shaphat the son of Hori;
7 pour la tribu d’Issacar, Yiguéal, fils de Yosef;	7 from the tribe of Judah, Caleb the son of Jephunneh;
8 pour la tribu d’Éphraïm, Hochéa, fils de Noun;	8 from the tribe of Issachar, Igal the son of Joseph;
9 pour la tribu de Benjamin, Palti, fils de Rafou;	9 from the tribe of Ephraim, Hosea the son of Nun;
10 pour la tribu de Zabulon, Gadiel, fils de Sodi;	10 from the tribe of Benjamin, Palti the son of Raphu;
11 pour la tribu de Joseph, pour la tribu de Manassé, Gadi, fils de Sousi;	11 from the tribe of Zebulon, Gaddiel the son of Sodi;
12 pour la tribu de Dan, Ammiel, fils de Gémali;	12 from the tribe of Joseph, of the scepter of Manasseh, Gaddi the son of Susi;
13 pour la tribu d’Asher, Sétour, fils de Mikaël;	13 from the tribe of Dan, Ammiel the son of Gemalli;
14 pour la tribu de Nephtali, Nahbi, fils de Vafsi;	14 from the tribe of Asher, Sethur the son of Michael;

16 Ce sont là les noms des hommes que Moïse envoya pour explorer le pays de Canaan (à Hochéa, Moïse donna le nom de Josué).	16 from the tribe of Gad, Guel the son of Machi.
17 Moïse les envoya donc pour explorer le pays de Canaan. Il leur dit: “Montez par le Négueb, puis passez à la montagne.	17 These are the names of the men, whom Moses sent to examine the land. And he called Hosea, the son of Nun, Joshua.
18 Regardez bien comment est le pays et quelle est la population qui l’habite: si elle est forte ou faible, peu nombreuse ou importante.	18 And so, Moses sent them to examine the land of Canaan, and he said to them: “Ascend by the south side. And when you arrive at the mountains,
19 Regardez comment est ce pays où ils vivent; s’il est bon ou mauvais. Comment sont les villes où ils habitent: s’agit-il de camps ou de villes fortifiées?	19 consider the land, as to what kind it may be, and the people, who are its inhabitants, whether they may be strong or weak, whether they may be few in number or many,
20 Regardez comment est la terre, si elle est riche ou pauvre, s’il y a des arbres ou non. Et vous n’aurez pas peur de nous rapporter des fruits de la terre.” Car c’était la saison des premiers raisins.	20 and the land itself, whether it is good or bad, what kind of cities, walled or without walls,
21 Ils partirent donc pour explorer le pays, depuis le désert de Tsin jusqu’à Réhob, vers l’Entrée-de-Hamat.	21 the soil, rich or barren, forested or without trees. Be strong, and bring us some of the fruits of the land.” Now it was the time when the first ripe grapes were ready to be eaten.
22 Ils montèrent par le Négueb et arrivèrent à Hébron, où se trouvaient Ahiman, Chéchaï et Talmaï, de la race des Anakim. Hébron avait été fondée sept ans avant la ville de Tanis, en Égypte.	22 And when they had ascended, they explored the land from the desert of Sin, all the way to Rehob, as one enters into Hamath.
23 Ils parvinrent donc au val d’Echkol, où ils coupèrent un sarment et une grappe de raisin qu’ils emportèrent à deux sur une perche, avec des grenades et des figues.	23 And they ascended by the south side. And they arrived at Hebron, where there were Ahiman and Shishai and Talmai, the sons of Anak. For Hebron was founded seven years before Tanis, the city of Egypt.
24 On appela ce lieu le vallon d’Echkol, à cause de la grappe que les Israélites y avaient cueillie.	24 And continuing on as far as the Torrent of the Cluster of Grapes, they cut off a vine with its grapes, which two men carried on a board. Likewise, they took from the pomegranates and the figs of that place,
25 Au bout de quarante jours, ils revinrent de leur inspection dans ce pays.	25 which was called Nehel Eshcol, that is, the Torrent of the Cluster of Grapes, because the sons of Israel had carried a cluster of grapes from there.
26 Dès leur retour, ils se présentèrent à Moïse, à Aaron et à toute la communauté des Israélites, à Qadesh, dans le désert de Paran. Ils firent leur compte-rendu devant toute la communauté et lui montrèrent les fruits du pays.	26 And those exploring the land returned after forty days, having circulated through the entire region.
27 Voici ce qu’ils racontèrent: “Nous sommes entrés au pays où tu nous avais envoyés. C’est véritablement un pays où ruissellent le lait et le miel: en voici les fruits!	27 And they went to Moses and Aaron, and to the entire assembly of the sons of Israel in the desert of Paran, which is in Kadesh. And speaking to them, and to the entire multitude, they showed them the fruits of the land.
28 Mais le peuple qui habite ce pays est très fort. Les villes sont très grandes et fortifiées, nous y avons même vu des descendants d’Anak.	28 And they explained, saying: “We went into the land, to which you sent us, which, it is true, flows with milk and honey, as one can know by these fruits.
29 Amalec habite le Négueb; le Hittite, le Jébusite et l’Amorite habitent la montagne; le Cananéen est installé près de la mer et sur les rives du Jourdain.”	29 But it has very strong occupants, and the cities are great and also walled. We saw the race of Anak there.
30 Caleb calma le peuple qui s’en prenait à Moïse. “Montons, dit-il, et conquérons le pays, car nous en sommes bien capables.”	30 Amalek lives in the south. The Hethite, and the Jebusite, and the Amorite live in the mountains. And truly, the Canaanite stays near the sea and around the streams of the Jordan.”
31 Mais les hommes qui étaient montés avec lui répliquèrent: “Nous ne pouvons attaquer ce peuple, car il est trop fort pour nous.”	31 During these events, Caleb, to restrain the murmuring of the people who rose up against Moses, said, “Let us ascend and possess the land, for we will be able to obtain it.”
32 Et ils se mirent à décrier le pays qu’ils avaient visité. Ils dirent aux Israélites: “Le pays que nous avons exploré, est un pays qui dévore ses habitants. Les hommes qui l’habitent sont de très grande taille.	32 Yet truly, the others, who had been with him, were saying, “By no means are we able to ascend to this people, because they are stronger than we are.”
33 Et nous y avons même vu des géants. À côté d’eux nous avions l’impression d’être des sauterelles et c’est ainsi qu’ils nous voyaient.”	33 And before the sons of Israel they disparaged the land, which they had inspected, saying: “The land, which we viewed, devours its inhabitants. The people, upon whom we gazed, were of lofty stature.
	34 There, we saw some monsters among the sons of Anak, of the race of giants; by comparison with them, we seemed like locusts.”
