1 En la deuxième année de son règne, Nabukodonozor eut un songe qui le troubla au point d’en perdre le sommeil.	1 In the second year of the reign of Nabuchodonosor, Nabuchodonosor had a dream, and his spirit was terrified, and his dream went out of his mind.
2 Le roi donna l’ordre de convoquer les magiciens, les devins, les sorciers et les astrologues pour lui expliquer le songe qu’il avait eu; ils arrivèrent et se tinrent devant le roi.	2 Then the king commanded to call together the diviners and the wise men, and the magicians, and the Chaldeans: to declare to the king his dreams: so they came and stood before the king.
3 Le roi leur dit: “J’ai fait un songe et je n’aurai pas l’esprit en repos tant que je ne saurai pas ce que signifie ce songe.”	3 And the king said to them: I saw a dream: and being troubled in mind I know not what I saw.
4 Les astrologues dirent au roi: “Vive le roi à jamais! Raconte à tes serviteurs le songe et nous te donnerons l’interprétation.”	4 And the Chaldeans answered the king in Syriac: O king, live for ever: tell to thy servants thy dream, and we will declare the interpretation thereof.
5 Mais le roi répondit aux astrologues: “Voici ce que j’ai décidé: si vous ne me faites pas connaître le songe et son explication, vous serez mis en pièces et vos maisons seront ruinées.	5 And the king answering said to the Chaldeans: The thing is gone out of my mind: unless you tell me the dream, and the meaning thereof, you shall be put to death, and your houses shall be confiscated.
6 Mais si vous me faites connaître le songe et son explication, vous recevrez de moi des dons, des cadeaux et de grands honneurs. Donc racontez-moi le songe et vous en donnerez l’interprétation.”	6 But if you tell the dream, and the meaning of it, you shall receive of me rewards, and gifts, and great honour: therefore tell me the dream, and the interpretation thereof.
7 Ils prirent de nouveau la parole et dirent: “Le roi doit raconter le songe à ses serviteurs, ensuite nous l’expliquerons.”	7 They answered again and said: Let the king tell his servants the dream, and we will declare the interpretation of it.
8 Mais le roi leur dit: “Je le vois bien, vous cherchez à gagner du temps, parce que vous savez que ma décision est prise.	8 The king answered, and said: I know for certain that you seek to gain time, since you know that the thing is gone from me.
9 Si vous ne me faites pas connaître le songe, vous serez tous exécutés. Autrement, vous vous mettez d’accord pour me dire des choses inventées et tordues alors que le temps passe; racontez-moi donc le songe et je saurai que vous êtes capables de l’interpréter.”	9 If therefore you tell me not the dream, there is one sentence concerning you, that you have also framed a lying interpretation, and full of deceit, to speak before me till the time pass away. Tell me therefore the dream, that I may know that you also give a true interpretation thereof.
10 Les astrologues répondirent au roi: “Il n’y a personne sur la terre qui puisse faire ce que le roi demande. Aucun roi, si grand et si puissant fût-il, n’a demandé une chose pareille à l’un de ses magiciens, devins ou astrologues.	10 Then the Chaldeains answered before the king, and said: There is no man upon earth, that can accomplish thy word, O king, neither doth any king, though great and mighty, ask such a thing of any diviner, or wise man, or Chaldean.
11 La chose que le roi demande est trop difficile, seuls les dieux pourraient répondre à la demande du roi, mais ils n’habitent pas chez les hommes.”	11 For the thing that thou askest, O king, is difficult; nor can any one be found that can shew it before the king, except the gods, whose conversation is not with men.
12 Alors le roi entra dans une telle colère, dans une telle fureur, qu’il ordonna d’exécuter tous les sages de Babylone.	12 Upon hearing this, the king in fury, and in great wrath, commanded that all the wise men of Babylon should be put to death.
13 On afficha l’ordre d’exécuter les sages et l’on chercha aussi Daniel et ses compagnons pour les mettre à mort.	13 And the decree being gone forth, the wise men were slain: and Daniel and his companions were sought for, to be put to death.
14 Alors Daniel parla avec sagesse et astuce à Aryok, le chef des bourreaux du roi qui était parti pour exécuter les sages de Babylone.	14 Then Daniel inquired concerning the law and the sentence, of Arioch the general of the king's army, who was gone forth to kill the wise men of Babylon.
15 Il dit à Aryok, le chef des bourreaux: “Pourquoi le roi a-t-il donné cet ordre de façon si urgente?” Aryok expliqua à Daniel ce qui se passait.	15 And he asked him that had received the orders of the king, why so cruel a sentence was gone forth from the face of the king. And when Arioch had told the matter to Daniel,
16 Daniel alla dire au roi: “Accorde-moi un délai et je te donnerai l’explication du songe.”	16 Daniel went in and desired of the king, that he would give him time to resolve the question and declare it to the king.
17 Daniel rentra chez lui et fit connaître la chose à ses compagnons Ananias, Misaël et Azarias.	17 And he went into his house, and told the matter to Ananias, and Misael, and Azarias his companions:
18 Il leur demanda de supplier la miséricorde du Dieu du ciel pour qu’il leur éclaire ce mystère: autrement on ferait mourir Daniel et ses compagnons avec le reste des sages de Babylone.	18 To the end that they should ask mercy at the face of the God of heaven concerning this secret, and that Daniel and his companions might not perish with the rest of the wise men of Babylon.
19 Et voilà que le mystère fut révélé à Daniel au cours d’une vision pendant la nuit. Daniel bénit le Dieu du Ciel,	19 Then was the mystery revealed to Daniel by a vision in the night: and Daniel blessed the God of heaven,
20 il dit: “Béni soit Dieu pour les siècles des siècles! à lui appartiennent la sagesse et la force.	20 And speaking he said: Blessed be the name of the Lord from eternity and for evermore: for wisdom and fortitude are his.
21 Il est le maître des temps et des moments, il renverse les rois comme il les établit, il donne la sagesse aux sages, l’intelligence à ceux qui décident.	21 And he changeth times and ages: taketh away kingdoms and establisheth them, giveth wisdom to the wise, and knowledge to them that have understanding.
22 Il révèle les mystères et les secrets, il connaît ce qui est caché dans les ténèbres; là où il est, tout est lumière.	22 He revealeth deep and hidden things, and knoweth what is in darkness: and light is with him.
23 “Dieu de mes pères, je te loue et je te glorifie, car tu m’as donné la sagesse et la force et tu viens de me faire connaître ce que nous t’avons demandé: tu nous as révélé le secret du roi.”	23 To thee, O God of our fathers, I give thanks, and I praise thee: because thou hast given me wisdom and strength: and now thou hast shewn me what we desired of thee, for thou hast made known to us, the king's discourse.
24 Alors Daniel entra chez Aryok que le roi avait chargé d’exécuter les sages de Babylone. Il lui dit: “Ne fais pas périr les sages de Babylone, mais conduis-moi chez le roi et je donnerai au roi l’explication.”	24 After this Daniel went in to Arioch, to whom the king had given orders to destroy the wise men of Babylon, and he spoke thus to him: Destroy not the wise men of Babylon: bring me in before the king, and I will tell the solution to the king.
25 Aryok conduisit Daniel en toute hâte chez le roi et il lui dit: “Parmi les déportés de Juda j’ai trouvé un homme qui donnera au roi la signification du songe.”	25 Then Arioch in haste brought in Daniel to the king, and said to him: I have found a man of the children of the captivity of Juda, that will resolve the question to the king.
26 Le roi prit la parole et dit à Daniel, dont le nom était Baltsasar: “Es-tu capable de me faire connaître le songe que j’ai eu et de m’en donner l’interprétation?”	26 The king answered, and said to Daniel, whose name was Baltassar: Thinkest thou indeed that thou canst tell me the dream that I saw, and the interpretation thereof?
27 Daniel prit la parole en présence du roi et dit: “Ni les sages, ni les devins, ni les magiciens ou les astrologues n’ont pu faire connaître au roi le mystère sur lequel il les interroge,	27 And Daniel made answer before the king, and said: The secret that the king desireth to know, none of the wise men, or the philosophers, or the diviners, or the soothsayers can declare to the king.
28 car c’est Dieu, dans le ciel, qui a révélé des mystères. Il a fait connaître au roi Nabukodonozor ce qui doit arriver dans la suite des jours. Ton songe et les visions que tu as eues dans ton lit, les voici:	28 But there is a God in heaven that revealeth mysteries, who hath shewn to thee, O king Nabuchodonosor, what is to come to pass in the latter times. Thy dream, and the visions of thy head upon thy bed, are these:
29 “Les pensées qui te sont venues à l’esprit pendant la nuit concernent l’avenir, Celui qui révèle les mystères t’a fait connaître ce qui arrivera.	29 Thou, O king, didst begin to think in thy bed, what should come to pass hereafter: and he that revealeth mysteries shewed thee what shall come to pass.
30 Si ce mystère m’a été révélé, ce n’est pas que j’aie en moi une sagesse supérieure à celle des autres hommes, c’est pour que tu entendes ce mystère et que tu en connaisses l’explication.	30 To me also this secret is revealed, not by any wisdom that I have more than all men alive: but that the interpretation might be made manifest to the king, and thou mightest know the thoughts of thy mind.
31 “Tu as vu une statue très grande et d’un éclat extraordinaire; elle était là dressée devant toi et son aspect était redoutable.	31 Thou, O king, sawest, and behold there was as it were a great statue: this statue, which was great and high, tall of stature, stood before thee, and the look thereof was terrible.
32 Cette statue avait une tête d’or fin, la poitrine et les bras étaient d’argent, le ventre et les cuisses de bronze,	32 The head of this statue was of fine gold, but the breast and the arms of silver, and the belly and the thighs of brass:
33 les jambes de fer, et les pieds de fer mélangé d’argile.	33 And the legs of iron, the feet part of iron and part of clay.
34 “Tu regardais, et voici qu’une pierre se détacha sans que personne ne l’ait touchée; elle frappa la statue au niveau des pieds de fer et d’argile et les brisa.	34 Thus thou sawest, till a stone was cut out of a mountain without hands: and it struck the statue upon the feet thereof that were of iron and of clay, and broke them in pieces.
35 Alors le fer, l’argile, le bronze, l’argent et l’or furent brisés du même coup, le vent les emporta sans laisser de trace, comme il emporte la bale du blé sur les aires à battre pendant l’été. Mais la pierre qui avait frappé la statue devint une grande montagne et remplit toute la terre.	35 Then was the iron, the clay, the brass, the silver, and the gold broken to pieces together, and became like the chaff of a summer's thrashingfloor, and they were carried away by the wind: and there was no place found for them: but the stone that struck the statue, became a great mountain, and filled the whole earth.
36 “Voilà donc le songe: maintenant nous donnerons au roi son explication.	36 This is the dream: we will also tell the interpretation thereof before thee, O king.
37 Tu es le roi des rois, le Dieu du Ciel t’a donné la royauté, la puissance, la force et la gloire.	37 Thou art a king of kings: and the God of heaven hath given thee a kingdom, and strength, and power, and glory:
38 Il a remis entre tes mains les hommes, les bêtes des champs et les oiseaux du ciel, il a fait de toi leur maître partout où ils habitent. La tête d’or, c’est toi.	38 And all places wherein the children of men, and the beasts of the field do dwell: he hath also given the birds of the air into thy hand, and hath put all things under thy power: thou therefore art the head of gold.
39 Après toi se lèvera un autre royaume inférieur au tien, puis un troisième royaume qui sera de bronze et dominera toute la terre.	39 And after thee shall rise up another kingdom, inferior to thee, of silver: and another third kingdom of brass, which shall rule over all the world.
40 “Ensuite viendra un quatrième royaume, fort comme le fer. De même que le fer brise et réduit tout en poussière, il brisera et réduira tout.	40 And the fourth kingdom shall be as iron. As iron breaketh into pieces, and subdueth all things, so shall that break and destroy all these.
41 Comme tu l’as vu, les pieds et les orteils sont mélangés de fer et d’argile de potier; ce royaume sera un royaume divisé. Il y aura en lui la solidité du fer: tu as vu le fer mélangé à l’argile boueuse.	41 Arid whereas thou sawest the feet, and the toes, part of potter's clay, and part of iron: the kingdom shall be divided, but yet it shall take its origin from the iron, according as thou sawest the iron mixed with the miry clay.
42 Mais les orteils des pieds sont moitié fer, moitié argile; le royaume sera fort en partie seulement, il sera aussi fragile.	42 And as the toes of the feet were part of iron, and part of clay, the kingdom shall be partly strong, and partly broken.
43 De même que tu as vu le fer mélangé à l’argile boueuse, ils se mêleront par une semence d’hommes mais ils ne seront pas unis l’un à l’autre, tout comme le fer ne peut s’unir avec l’argile.	43 And whereas thou sawest the iron mixed with miry clay, they shall be mingled indeed together with the seed of man, but they shall not stick fast one to another, as iron cannot be mixed with clay.
44 “Au temps de ces rois, le Dieu du Ciel suscitera un royaume qui ne sera jamais détruit; sa puissance ne passera pas à un autre peuple. Il brisera et détruira tous les royaumes et les remplacera pour toujours.	44 But in the days of those kingdoms the God of heaven will set up a kingdom that shall never be destroyed, and his kingdom shall not be delivered up to another people, and it shall break in pieces, and shall consume all these kingdoms, and itself shall stand for ever.
45 Tu as vu qu’une pierre s’est détachée de la montagne sans qu’aucune main l’ait touchée, qu’elle a broyé le fer, le bronze, l’argile, l’argent et l’or: c’est cela même qui arrivera. “Le Grand Dieu vient de faire connaître au roi ce qui arrivera un jour; puisque c’est bien là le songe, l’interprétation est exacte.”	45 According as thou sawest that the stone was cut out of the mountain without hands, and broke in pieces, the clay, and the iron, and the brass, and the silver, and the gold, the great God hath shewn the king what shall come to pass hereafter, and the dream is true, and the interpretation thereof is faithful.
46 En entendant cela, le roi Nabukodonozor tomba la face contre terre et se prosterna devant Daniel, puis il donna l’ordre de lui présenter des offrandes et des parfums d’agréable odeur.	46 Then king Nabuchodonosor fell on his face, and worshipped Daniel, and commanded that they should offer in sacrifice to him victims and incense.
47 Le roi s’adressa à Daniel, il lui dit: “En vérité, votre Dieu est le Dieu des dieux, le Seigneur des Rois; c’est bien lui qui fait connaître les mystères, puisque tu as pu nous les révéler.”	47 And the king spoke to Daniel, and said: Verily your God is the God of gods, and Lord of kings, and a revealer of hidden things: seeing thou couldst discover this secret.
48 Le roi éleva Daniel et lui donna de nombreux et riches cadeaux; il en fit le gouverneur de la province de Babylone et le grand chef de tous les sages de Babylone.	48 Then the king advanced Daniel to a high station, and gave him many and great gifts: and he made him governor over all the provinces of Babylon, and chief of the magistrates over all the wise men of Babylon.
49 Aussitôt Daniel demanda au roi de mettre à la tête de l’administration de la province de Babylone, Chadrak, Méchak et Abed-Négo; Daniel restait à la disposition du roi.	49 And Daniel requested of the king, and he appointed Sidrach, Misach, and Abdenago over the works of the province of Babylon: but Daniel himself was in the king's palace.
