1 En la onzième année, le premier jour du troisième mois, cette parole de Yahvé me fut adressée:	1 In the eleventh year, on the first day of the third month, the word of Yahweh was addressed to me asfol ows,
2 “Fils d’homme, tu diras ceci à Pharaon, roi d’Égypte, et à tout son monde: Comment exprimer ta grandeur?	2 'Son of man, say to Pharaoh king of Egypt and his throng of subjects: "What can compare with you forgreatness?
3 Tu étais un cèdre du Liban aux branches magnifiques, au feuillage abondant, si haut de taille qu’il atteignait les nuages.	3 I know: a cedar tree in the Lebanon with noble branches, dense foliage, lofty height. Its top pierces theclouds.
4 Les eaux l’avaient fait grandir, les eaux de dessous terre lui avaient donné sa prestance, et de là où il était, lui-même irriguait par ses canaux tous les arbres de la campagne.	4 The waters have made it grow, the deep has made it tall, pouring its rivers round the place where it isplanted, sending rivulets to al the wild trees.
5 Il était le plus élevé des arbres de la campagne, ses branches s’étaient multipliées, ses rameaux s’étendaient tout autour grâce à l’abondance des eaux.	5 This is why its height was greater than that of other wild trees, its branches increased in number, itsboughs stretched wide, because of the plentiful waters making it grow.
6 Tous les oiseaux du ciel se nichaient dans ses branches, ( ) et des peuples nombreux recherchaient son ombre.	6 Al the birds of heaven nested in its branches; under its boughs all wild animals dropped their young; inits shade sat many, many people.
7 ( Sa taille, ses longues branches faisaient sa beauté, ses racines étaient tournés vers des eaux abondantes.)	7 It was beautiful in its size, in the span of its boughs; for its roots were in plentiful waters.
8 Nul cèdre ne l’égalait dans le jardin de Dieu: les cyprès n’avaient pas de telles branches, les platanes n’avaient pas un tel feuillage ( ).	8 There was no cedar like it in the garden of God, no cypress had branches such as these, no plane treecould match its boughs, no tree in the garden of God could rival its beauty.
9 ( ) Sa ramure était si fournie, que tout le jardin de Dieu était jaloux de lui.	9 I had made it so lovely with its many branches that it was the envy of every tree in Eden, in the gardenof God.
10 Mais voici ce que dit Yahvé: Il est monté trop haut, sa cime s’est élevée jusqu’aux nuages et son cœur s’est gonflé d’orgueil.	10 "Very wel , the Lord Yahweh says this: "Since it has raised itself to its ful height, has lifted its top into the clouds, and has grown arrogant about its height,
11 C’est pourquoi je le livre aux mains du prince des nations qui le mettra à mal, car moi je l’ai rejeté.	11 I have handed it over to the prince of the nations, for him to treat as its wickedness deserves; I haverejected it.
12 Des étrangers, les tombeurs des peuples, l’ont coupé: ils l’ont abattu dans la montagne, et ses branches sont tombées dans toutes les vallées. Elles se sont brisées dans le creux des ravins; tous les peuples de la terre se sont retirés de sous son ombre et l’ont abandonné.	12 Foreigners, the most barbarous of nations, have cut it down and deserted it. On the mountains, in althe val eys, lie its branches; its broken boughs are in every ravine throughout the country; everybody in thecountry has fled its shade and deserted it.
13 Les oiseaux du ciel se perchent sur ses débris, les animaux sauvages s’installent au milieu de ses branches.	13 On its wreckage perch al the birds of heaven; all the wild animals have advanced on its branches.
14 Qu’on ne voie plus, désormais, un arbre bien irrigué tirant orgueil de sa grandeur, ou qui veuille pousser sa ramure jusqu’aux nuages. Aucun arbre dont les racines atteignent les eaux profondes ne placera plus sa confiance en lui-même, car tous sont voués à la mort, tous iront au séjour des morts comme les fils d’Adam qui descendent à la tombe.	14 "So in future let no tree rear its height beside the waters, none push its top into the clouds, nowatered tree stretch its height towards them. For al of them are doomed to death, to the depths of theunderworld, with the common run of humanity, with those who sink into oblivion.
15 Voici ce que dit Yahvé: Le jour où le cèdre est descendu au séjour des morts, j’ai ordonné un grand deuil; j’ai refermé sur lui l’abîme, j’ai arrêté ses fleuves et les eaux ont tari. Pour lui j’ai vêtu de noir le Liban, et tous les arbres de la campagne se sont fanés.	15 "The Lord Yahweh says this: The day it went down to Sheol, I imposed mourning, I closed the deepover it. I stopped its rivers and the plentiful waters dried up; I made Lebanon dark because of it, and al the wildtrees wilted because of it.
16 Les nations ont été saisies d’effroi au bruit de sa chute, lorsque je l’ai fait descendre au séjour des morts avec ceux qui descendent à la tombe. Mais dans le pays souterrain tous les arbres d’Éden, les plus beaux du Liban et les mieux irrigués se sont consolés.	16 With the noise when it fel I made the nations quake, as I hurled it down to Sheol, with those who sinkinto oblivion. In the depths of the underworld al the trees of Eden took comfort, the pick of the loveliest trees ofthe Lebanon, al irrigated by the waters.
17 Ceux qui vivaient à son ombre parmi les nations sont descendus avec lui au séjour des morts, ils ont rejoint les victimes de l’épée.	17 And its offspring among the nations, once living in its shade, went down to Sheol with it, to those whohave been slaughtered by the sword.
18 À qui pourrais-je te comparer? Mais je t’ai précipité au plus profond de la terre, tout comme les arbres d’Éden: te voilà couché avec les incirconcis, avec les victimes de l’épée. Voilà Pharaon et voilà son peuple, dit Yahvé.	18 "Which of the trees of Eden compares with you for glory and greatness? Yet you have been hurleddown with the trees of Eden, to the depths of the underworld, among the uncircumcised, and there you lie withthose who have been slaughtered by the sword. So much for Pharaoh and al his throng -- declares the LordYahweh." '
