1 Joas avait 7 ans lorsqu’il monta sur le trône et il régna 40 ans à Jérusalem; sa mère s’appelait Sibya, elle était de Bersabée.	1 Joash was seven years old when he became king, and he reigned forty years in Jerusalem. His mother, named Zibiah, was from Beer-sheba.
2 Joas fit ce qui est juste aux yeux de Yahvé tant que vécut le prêtre Yoyada.	2 Joash did what was pleasing to the LORD as long as Jehoiada the priest lived.
3 Yoyada lui fit épouser deux femmes et il engendra des fils et des filles.	3 Jehoiada provided him with two wives, and he became the father of sons and daughters.
4 Après cela, Joas décida de réparer la Maison de Yahvé.	4 After some time, Joash decided to restore the LORD'S temple.
5 Il rassembla les prêtres et les lévites et il leur dit: “Partez vers les villes de Juda; chaque année vous ramasserez de l’argent dans tout Israël pour réparer la Maison de votre Dieu; dépêchez-vous de le faire.” Mais les lévites ne se pressèrent pas.	5 He called together the priests and Levites and said to them: "Go out to all the cities of Judah and collect money from all Israel that you may repair the house of your God over the years. You must hasten this affair." But the Levites did not hasten.
6 Le roi appela alors Yoyada, leur chef, et lui dit: “Pourquoi n’as-tu pas insisté auprès des lévites pour qu’ils perçoivent en Juda et à Jérusalem la redevance que Moïse, le serviteur de Yahvé, et l’assemblée d’Israël ont imposée pour la Tente du Témoignage?	6 Then the king summoned Jehoiada, who was in charge, and said to him: "Why have you not required the Levites to bring in from Judah and Jerusalem the tax levied by Moses, the servant of the LORD, and by the assembly of Israel, for the tent of the testimony?"
7 En effet, cette maudite Athalie et ses fils ont laissé la Maison se dégrader, ils ont même utilisé pour les Baals les objets consacrés de la Maison de Yahvé.”	7 For the wicked Athaliah and her sons had damaged the house of God and had even turned over to the Baals the dedicated resources of the LORD'S temple.
8 Le roi ordonna donc de faire un coffre que l’on plaça à la porte de la Maison de Yahvé, à l’extérieur.	8 At the king's command, therefore, they made a chest, which they put outside the gate of the LORD'S temple.
9 Puis il fit proclamer dans Juda et dans Jérusalem: “Que l’on apporte à Yahvé la redevance que Moïse, le serviteur de Dieu, avait imposée à Israël quand il était au désert.”	9 They had it proclaimed throughout Judah and Jerusalem that the tax which Moses, the servant of God, had imposed on Israel in the desert should be brought to the LORD.
10 Tous les chefs et tout le peuple se réjouirent; ils apportèrent et versèrent dans le coffre la totalité de leur redevance.	10 All the princes and the people rejoiced; they brought what was asked and cast it into the chest until it was filled.
11 Chaque fois que les lévites voyaient beaucoup d’argent dans le coffre, ils le portaient à l’inspecteur du roi; le secrétaire du roi venait alors avec le délégué du prêtre en chef, il vidait le coffre, puis on le reportait et le remettait à sa place. On faisait ainsi jour après jour; on ramassa beaucoup d’argent.	11 Whenever the chest was brought to the royal officials by the Levites and they saw that it contained much money, the royal scribe and an overseer for the high priest came, emptied the chest, then took it back and returned it to its place. This they did day after day until they had collected a large sum of money.
12 Le roi et Yoyada confiaient l’argent à ceux qui étaient chargés des travaux d’entretien dans la Maison de Yahvé; ceux-ci engageaient des tailleurs de pierre, des charpentiers, des artisans du fer et du bronze, pour réparer la Maison de Yahvé.	12 Then the king and Jehoiada gave it to the workmen in charge of the labor on the LORD'S temple, who hired masons and carpenters to restore the temple, and also iron-and bronze-smiths to repair it.
13 Ceux qui étaient chargés des travaux se mirent à l’ouvrage et grâce à eux les travaux de réparation avancèrent. On remit en état la Maison de Yahvé et on la consolida.	13 The workmen labored, and the task of restoration progressed under their hands. They restored the house of God according to its original form, and reinforced it.
14 Lorsque les ouvriers eurent terminé, ils apportèrent le reste de l’argent au roi et à Yoyada. On en fit des objets pour la Maison de Yahvé: des objets pour le culte et pour les holocaustes, coupes et vases d’or et d’argent. Durant toute la vie de Yoyada on ne cessa d’offrir des holocaustes dans la Maison de Yahvé.	14 After they had finished, they brought the rest of the money to the king and to Jehoiada, who had it made into utensils for the LORD'S temple, utensils for the service and the holocausts, and basins and other gold and silver utensils. They offered holocausts in the LORD'S temple continually throughout the lifetime of Jehoiada.
15 Yoyada vieillit, et il mourut chargé d’années. Il avait alors 130 ans.	15 Jehoiada lived to a ripe old age; he was a hundred and thirty years old when he died.
16 On l’enterra avec les rois dans la Cité de David car, en Israël, il avait bien agi envers son Dieu et le Temple de son Dieu.	16 He was buried in the City of David with the kings, because he had done good in Israel, in particular with respect to God and his temple.
17 Après la mort de Yoyada, les chefs de Juda vinrent se prosterner devant le roi et le roi les écouta.	17 After the death of Jehoiada, the princes of Judah came and paid homage to the king, and the king then listened to them.
18 Ils abandonnèrent alors la Maison de Yahvé, le Dieu de leurs pères, et ils servirent les pieux sacrés et les idoles; à cause de cette faute le malheur se fit menaçant sur Juda et Jérusalem.	18 They forsook the temple of the LORD, the God of their fathers, and began to serve the sacred poles and the idols; and because of this crime of theirs, wrath came upon Judah and Jerusalem.
19 Yahvé leur envoya des prophètes pour les ramener vers lui; ces prophètes témoignèrent contre eux, mais ils n’y firent aucune attention.	19 Although prophets were sent to them to convert them to the LORD, the people would not listen to their warnings.
20 L’esprit de Dieu s’empara de Zacharie, fils du prêtre Yoyada. Il se posta devant le peuple et lui dit: “Voici ce que dit Dieu: Pourquoi désobéir aux commandements de Yahvé et courir à l’échec? Vous avez abandonné Yahvé? Eh bien lui, il vous abandonne!”	20 Then the spirit of God possessed Zechariah, son of Jehoiada the priest. He took his stand above the people and said to them: "God says, 'Why are you transgressing the LORD'S commands, so that you cannot prosper? Because you have abandoned the LORD, he has abandoned you.'"
21 Ils complotèrent contre lui et l’assommèrent avec des pierres dans la cour du Temple, sur l’ordre du roi.	21 But they conspired against him, and at the king's order they stoned him to death in the court of the LORD'S temple.
22 Le roi Joas oublia la fidélité que lui avait montrée Yoyada, père de Zacharie: il mit son fils à mort! Mais en mourant celui-ci s’écria: “Que Yahvé regarde et qu’il demande des comptes!”	22 Thus King Joash was unmindful of the devotion shown him by Jehoiada, Zechariah's father, and slew his son. And as he was dying, he said, "May the LORD see and avenge."
23 Vers le milieu de l’année, l’armée d’Aram partit en guerre contre Joas et s’avança en Juda jusqu’à Jérusalem. Parmi la population, ils firent un massacre des chefs, et ils envoyèrent leurs dépouilles au roi de Damas.	23 At the turn of the year a force of Arameans came up against Joash. They invaded Judah and Jerusalem, did away with all the princes of the people, and sent all their spoil to the king of Damascus.
24 L’armée d’Aram qui était venue n’était guère nombreuse, mais Yahvé avait livré entre ses mains une armée très puissante, car le peuple avait abandonné Yahvé, le Dieu de ses pères. Les Araméens firent justice de Joas	24 Though the Aramean force came with few men, the LORD surrendered a very large force into their power, because Judah had abandoned the LORD, the God of their fathers. So punishment was meted out to Joash.
25 et le laissèrent en très mauvais état. Lorsqu’ils s’éloignèrent, ses serviteurs conspirèrent contre lui: c’est qu’il avait versé le sang du fils de Yoyada, le prêtre! Ils le tuèrent sur son lit. Une fois mort, on l’enterra dans la Cité de David, mais on ne le mit pas dans le cimetière des rois.	25 After the Arameans had departed from him, leaving him in grievous suffering, his servants conspired against him because of the murder of the son of Jehoiada the priest. They killed him on his sickbed. He was buried in the City of David, but not in the tombs of the kings.
26 Voici les noms des conspirateurs: Zabad fils de Chiméat l’Ammonite, et Yozabad fils de Chimrit la Moabite.	26 These conspired against him: Zabad, son of Shimeath from Ammon, and Jehozabad, son of Shimrith from Moab.
27 Ce qui concerne les fils du roi, les nombreux oracles dirigés contre lui et la restauration de la Maison de Yahvé, cela est écrit dans le commentaire du livre des Rois. Son fils Amasias régna à sa place.	27 Of his sons, and the great tribute imposed on him, and of his rebuilding of the house of God, there is a written account in the midrash of the book of the kings. His son Amaziah succeeded him as king.
