1 La mort de Saül survint peu après que David avait massacré les Amalécites: depuis deux jours déjà il était revenu à Siklag.	1 Saul was dead and David, returning after his victory over the Amalekites, had been at Ziklag for twodays.
2 Le troisième jour un homme arriva du camp de Saül, il avait des habits déchirés et de la terre sur la tête. Dès qu’il arriva près de David, il se jeta à terre et se prosterna.	2 On the third day, a man arrived from Saul's camp with his clothes torn and earth on his head. When hecame to David, he fel to the ground and prostrated himself.
3 David lui dit: “D’où viens-tu?” Il répondit: “Je me suis sauvé du camp d’Israël.”	3 David asked him, 'Where have you come from?' 'I have escaped from the Israelite camp,' he said.
4 David lui dit: “Comment les choses se sont-elles passées? Dis-le moi donc.” Cet homme répondit: “Le peuple s’est enfui du champ de bataille, beaucoup dans le peuple sont tombés et sont morts, Saül aussi et son fils Jonathan sont morts.”	4 David said, 'What has happened? Tell me.' He replied, 'The people fled from the battle, and many ofthem have fal en and are dead. Saul and his son Jonathan are dead too.'
5 David dit au jeune homme qui lui apportait cette nouvelle: “Comment sais-tu que Saül et son fils Jonathan sont morts?”	5 Then David asked the young man who brought the news, 'How do you know that Saul and his sonJonathan are dead?'
6 Il répondit: “Je me trouvais par hasard sur les monts de Guelboé. Saül s’appuyait sur sa lance, les chars et les cavaliers le serraient de près.	6 The young man replied, 'I happened to be on Mount Gilboa, and there was Saul, leaning on his spear,with the chariots and the cavalry bearing down on him.
7 Alors il me voit, il se retourne et m’appelle. Je lui dis: Me voici.	7 Glancing behind him and seeing me, he shouted to me. I replied, "Here I am!"
8 Il me dit: Qui es-tu? Je lui dis: Je suis un Amalécite.	8 He said, "Who are you?" I replied, "I am an Amalekite."
9 Il me dit: Approche-toi et donne-moi la mort, je suis encore plein de force et pourtant me voici pris de vertige.	9 He then said, "Come here and kil me. My head is swimming, although I still have al my strength."
10 Alors je me suis approché et je l’ai tué car je savais bien qu’il ne survivrait pas une fois tombé à terre, puis j’ai pris la couronne qui était sur sa tête, la chaîne qu’il portait au bras, et je les ai apportées ici à mon seigneur.”	10 So I went over to him and killed him, because I knew that once he fel he could not survive. I then tookthe crown which he had on his head and the bracelet on his arm, and have brought them here to my lord.'
11 David déchira ses habits, et tous les hommes qui étaient avec lui firent de même.	11 David then took hold of his clothes and tore them, and all the men with him did the same.
12 Ils poussèrent une grande lamentation, ils pleurèrent, ils jeûnèrent jusqu’au soir à cause de Saül et de son fils Jonathan, à cause du peuple de Yahvé et de la maison d’Israël qui étaient tombés sous l’épée.	12 They mourned and wept and fasted until the evening for Saul and his son Jonathan, for the people ofYahweh and for the House of Israel, because they had fal en by the sword.
13 David dit ensuite au jeune homme qui lui apportait cette nouvelle: “D’où es-tu?” Il répondit: “Je suis un étranger dans ce pays, fils d’un Amalécite.”	13 David said to the young man who had brought the news, 'Where are you from?' He replied, 'I am theson of a resident foreigner, an Amalekite.'
14 David lui dit: “Comment donc as-tu osé frapper à mort celui que Yahvé avait consacré?”	14 David said, 'How was it that you were not afraid to lift your hand to destroy Yahweh's anointed?'
15 Alors David appela l’un de ses compagnons et lui dit: “Approche et frappe-le.” Il le frappa et il mourut.	15 Then David called one of the young men. 'Come here,' he said, 'strike him down.' The man struck himand he died.
16 David dit encore: “Que ton sang retombe sur ta tête. Tu t’es condamné toi-même quand tu as dit que tu avais frappé à mort l’homme consacré par Yahvé.”	16 David said, 'Your blood be on your own head. You convicted yourself out of your own mouth bysaying, "I kil ed Yahweh's anointed." '
17 Puis David entonna une lamentation sur Saül et sur son fils Jonathan	17 David sang the fol owing lament over Saul and his son Jonathan
18 et il ordonna de l’apprendre aux fils de Juda: c’est le chant de l’arc, qu’on peut lire dans le livre du Juste.	18 (it is for teaching archery to the children of Judah; it is written in the Book of the Just):
19 “Comment sont-ils tombés sur les montagnes, ces héros qui faisaient la gloire d’Israël?	19 Does the splendour of Israel lie dead on your heights? How did the heroes fal ?
20 Ne l’annoncez pas dans Gat, ne portez pas la nouvelle dans les rues d’Ashkélon, ne donnez pas cette joie aux femmes Philistines, aux filles des incirconcis!	20 Do not speak of it in Gath, nor broadcast it in the streets of Ashkelon, for fear the daughters of thePhilistines rejoice, for fear the daughters of the uncircumcised gloat.
21 Que plus jamais rosée ni pluie ne tombent sur vous, montagnes de Guelboé, campagne verdoyante: c’est là que fut profané le bouclier des héros. Il ne fallait pas d’huile pour le bouclier de Saül,	21 You mountains of Gilboa, no dew, no rain fal on you, O treacherous fields where the heroes' shieldlies dishonoured! Not greased with oil, the shield of Saul,
22 mais le sang des blessés, la graisse des héros. Ni l’arc de Jonathan ne reculait, ni l’épée de Saül ne frappait dans le vide.	22 but with the blood of wounded men, the fat of warriors! The bow of Jonathan never turned back, thesword of Saul never came home unsated!
23 Vous étiez aimés, désirés, Saül et Jonathan: ni la vie ni la mort ne vous ont séparés. Ils étaient plus rapides que les aigles, ils étaient plus forts que les lions.	23 Saul and Jonathan, beloved and handsome, were divided neither in life, nor in death. Swifter thaneagles were they, stronger than lions.
24 Pleurez sur Saül, filles d’Israël! Il vous revêtait d’étoffes de couleur, sur vos robes de fête il posait des bijoux d’or.	24 O daughters of Israel, weep for Saul who gave you scarlet and fine linen to wear, who pinned goldenjewel ery on your dresses!
25 Comment sont-ils tombés, ces héros? Qui frappa à mort Jonathan, au cœur du combat?	25 How did the heroes fall in the thick of the battle? Jonathan, by your dying I too am stricken,
26 J’ai le cœur brisé pour toi, Jonathan, mon frère, tu m’étais si cher! Ton amour était pour moi, plus merveilleux que l’amour des femmes.	26 I am desolate for you, Jonathan my brother. Very dear you were to me, your love more wonderful tome than the love of a woman.
27 Comment sont-ils morts, les héros? Comment furent-elles brisées, les armes de guerre?”	27 How did the heroes fall and the weapons of war succumb!
