1 Alors Joseph vint prévenir le Pharaon: “Mon père et mes frères, lui dit-il, sont arrivés du pays de Canaan avec leur petit et leur gros bétail, et tout ce qui leur appartient. Ils sont au pays de Gossen.”	1 Joseph went and told Pharaoh, "My father and my brothers have come from the land of Canaan, with their flocks and herds and everything else they own; and they are now in the region of Goshen."
2 Joseph prit cinq de ses frères et les conduisit devant le Pharaon.	2 He then presented to Pharaoh five of his brothers whom he had selected from their full number.
3 Pharaon dit à ses frères: “Que faites-vous?” Ils répondirent au Pharaon: “Tes serviteurs élèvent du petit bétail, nous le faisons comme le faisaient nos pères.”	3 When Pharaoh asked them what their occupation was, they answered, "We, your servants, like our ancestors, are shepherds.
4 Ils firent cette demande au Pharaon: “Nous sommes venus pour habiter dans ce pays, car il n’y a plus de pâturages pour le troupeau de tes serviteurs, tellement la famine est grande au pays de Canaan. Tes serviteurs pourront-ils s’installer maintenant au pays de Gossen?”	4 We have come," they continued, "in order to stay in this country, for there is no pasture for your servants' flocks in the land of Canaan, so severe has the famine been there. Please, therefore, let your servants settle in the region of Goshen."
5 Le Pharaon dit alors à Joseph: “Ton père et tes frères sont venus me trouver.	5 Pharaoh said to Joseph, "They may settle in the region of Goshen; and if you know any of them to be qualified, you may put them in charge of my own livestock." Thus, when Jacob and his sons came to Joseph in Egypt, and Pharaoh, king of Egypt, heard about it, Pharaoh said to Joseph, "Now that your father and brothers have come to you,
6 Le pays d’Égypte est à ta disposition; installe ton père et tes frères dans le meilleur endroit du pays. Qu’ils habitent au pays de Gossen, et si tu sais qu’il y a parmi eux des hommes de valeur, tu les prendras comme chefs de mes propres troupeaux.”	6 the land of Egypt is at your disposal; settle your father and brothers in the pick of the land."
7 Joseph fit donc venir son père Jacob; il le présenta au Pharaon et Jacob salua le Pharaon.	7 Then Joseph brought his father Jacob and presented him to Pharaoh. After Jacob had paid his respects to Pharaoh,
8 Le Pharaon demanda à Jacob: “Quel est ton âge?”	8 Pharaoh asked him, "How many years have you lived?"
9 Jacob répondit au Pharaon: “J’en suis à la cent trentième année de ma vie errante, mais je n’ai pas atteint le grand âge de mes pères, qui étaient nomades comme moi. Ma vie a été courte et malheureuse.”	9 Jacob replied: "The years I have lived as a wayfarer amount to a hundred and thirty. Few and hard have been these years of my life, and they do not compare with the years that my ancestors lived as wayfarers."
10 Jacob salua de nouveau le Pharaon et se retira de devant lui.	10 Then Jacob bade Pharaoh farewell and withdrew from his presence.
11 Joseph installa donc son père et ses frères, il leur donna des terres au pays d’Égypte, dans le meilleur endroit, dans la terre de Ramsès, comme l’avait ordonné le Pharaon.	11 As Pharaoh had ordered, Joseph settled his father and brothers and gave them holdings in Egypt on the pick of the land, in the region of Rameses.
12 Joseph se chargea de nourrir son père et ses frères, ainsi que toute la famille de son père; il leur donna du pain selon le nombre des enfants.	12 And Joseph sustained his father and brothers and his father's whole household, down to the youngest, with food.
13 Il n’y avait plus de pain sur toute la terre, tellement la famine était grande. Le pays d’Égypte et le pays de Canaan étaient épuisés par cette famine.	13 Since there was no food in any country because of the extreme severity of the famine, and the lands of Egypt and Canaan were languishing from hunger,
14 Alors Joseph rassembla tout l’argent que donnaient les Égyptiens et les Cananéens lorsqu’ils venaient acheter du blé. Et Joseph fit rentrer cet argent dans le palais du Pharaon.	14 Joseph gathered in, as payment for the rations that were being dispensed, all the money that was to be found in Egypt and Canaan, and he put it in Pharaoh's palace.
15 Mais bientôt il n’y eut plus d’argent, ni en Égypte, ni en Canaan. Tous les Égyptiens vinrent donc trouver Joseph: “Donne-nous du pain, lui dirent-ils, même si nous n’avons plus d’argent. Faut-il donc que nous mourions sous tes yeux?”	15 When all the money in Egypt and Canaan was spent, all the Egyptians came to Joseph, pleading, "Give us food or we shall perish under your eyes; for our money is gone."
16 Joseph leur répondit: “Si vous n’avez plus d’argent, donnez-moi vos troupeaux et je vous donnerai du pain en échange.”	16 "Since your money is gone," replied Joseph, "give me your livestock, and I will sell you bread in return for your livestock."
17 Ils amenèrent donc leurs troupeaux à Joseph, et Joseph leur donna du pain en échange des chevaux, des troupeaux de petit et gros bétail et même des ânes. Il leur fournit des aliments cette année-là au prix de tous leurs troupeaux.	17 So they brought their livestock to Joseph, and he sold them food in return for their horses, their flocks of sheep and herds of cattle, and their donkeys. Thus he got them through that year with bread in exchange for all their livestock.
18 À la fin de cette année-là, ils vinrent de nouveau le trouver et lui dirent: “Mon seigneur sait bien que nous n’avons plus d’argent et que nos troupeaux appartiennent maintenant à mon seigneur. Nous n’avons plus à lui offrir que nos corps et nos champs.	18 When that year ended, they came to him in the following one and said: "We cannot hide from my lord that, with our money spent and our livestock made over to my lord, there is nothing left to put at my lord's disposal except our bodies and our farm land.
19 Devons-nous donc maintenant mourir sous tes yeux, nous et nos champs? Donne-nous du pain en échange de nos corps et de nos champs. Nous serons, nous et nos champs, les esclaves du Pharaon. Donne-nous du grain pour que nous restions en vie; sinon, nous allons mourir et nos champs retourneront en friche.”	19 Why should we and our land perish before your very eyes? Take us and our land in exchange for food, and we will become Pharaoh's slaves and our land his property; only give us seed, that we may survive and not perish, and that our land may not turn into a waste."
20 Ainsi Joseph acquit tous les champs d’Égypte pour le compte du Pharaon, car les Égyptiens vendaient tous leurs champs, tellement la famine pesait sur eux. Tout le pays devint ainsi la propriété du Pharaon.	20 Thus Joseph acquired all the farm land of Egypt for Pharaoh, since with the famine too much for them to bear, every Egyptian sold his field; so the land passed over to Pharaoh,
21 Quant au peuple, il fut réduit en esclavage dans tout le pays d’Égypte.	21 and the people were reduced to slavery, from one end of Egypt's territory to the other.
22 Cependant Joseph ne reprit pas aux prêtres leurs terres, car il y avait une loi du Pharaon en leur faveur, et d’après cette loi, le Pharaon devait assurer la nourriture des prêtres. C’est pourquoi ils ne vendirent pas les champs qui leur appartenaient.	22 Only the priests' lands Joseph did not take over. Since the priests had a fixed allowance from Pharaoh and lived off the allowance Pharaoh had granted them, they did not have to sell their land.
23 Joseph dit alors au peuple: “Je vous ai achetés aujourd’hui, vous et vos champs, pour le Pharaon. Voici donc du grain pour vous, vous ensemencerez vos champs.	23 Joseph told the people: "Now that I have acquired you and your land for Pharaoh, here is your seed for sowing the land.
24 Quand viendra le temps de la récolte, vous donnerez un cinquième de cette récolte au Pharaon, et les quatre autres parts vous resteront pour ensemencer vos champs, et pour vous nourrir, vous et tous ceux de votre maison.”	24 But when the harvest is in, you must give a fifth of it to Pharaoh, while you keep four-fifths as seed for your fields and as food for yourselves and your families (and as food for your children)."
25 Ils répondirent: “Grâce à toi nous allons vivre! Puissions-nous trouver grâce aux yeux de mon seigneur: nous serons les esclaves du Pharaon!”	25 "You have saved our lives!" they answered. "We are grateful to my lord that we can be Pharaoh's slaves."
26 Joseph établit donc un impôt sur les champs d’Égypte et, maintenant encore, un cinquième de la récolte est remis au Pharaon. Seuls les champs des prêtres ne devinrent pas propriété du Pharaon.	26 Thus Joseph made it a law for the land in Egypt, which is still in force, that a fifth of its produce should go to Pharaoh. Only the land of the priests did not pass over to Pharaoh.
27 Les Israélites habitèrent en Égypte sur les terres de Gossen. Ils en prirent possession, ils s’y développèrent et se multiplièrent beaucoup.	27 Thus Israel settled in the land of Egypt, in the region of Goshen. There they acquired property, were fertile, and increased greatly.
28 Jacob vécut 17 ans en Égypte. Le total des années de Jacob fut de 147 ans.	28 Jacob lived in the land of Egypt for seventeen years; the span of his life came to a hundred and forty-seven years.
29 Quand Israël sentit que sa mort était proche, il appela son fils Joseph et lui dit: “Si j’ai trouvé grâce à tes yeux, mets ta main sous ma cuisse et promets-moi de ne pas m’enterrer en Égypte, je reconnaîtrai là ta bonté et ta fidélité.	29 When the time approached for Israel to die, he called his son Joseph and said to him: "If you really wish to please me, put your hand under my thigh as a sign of your constant loyalty to me; do not let me be buried in Egypt.
30 Lorsque je me serai couché avec mes pères, tu m’emporteras d’Égypte et tu m’enterreras dans la tombe de mes pères.” Joseph répondit: “Je ferai ce que tu me demandes.”	30 When I lie down with my ancestors, have me taken out of Egypt and buried in their burial place."
31 Israël lui dit: “Jure-le moi!” Il le lui jura, et Israël s’inclina devant lui, au chevet de son lit.	31 "I will do as you say," he replied. But his father demanded, "Swear it to me!" So Joseph swore to him. Then Israel bowed at the head of the bed.
