1 Il y avait déjà eu une famine au temps d’Abraham; mais de nouveau la famine revint dans le pays. Isaac partit donc vers Guérar, auprès d’Abimélek roi des Philistins.	1 Then, when a famine arose over the land, after that barrenness which had happened in the days of Abraham, Isaac went to Abimelech, king of the Palestinians, in Gerar.
2 Yahvé lui apparut et lui dit: “Ne va pas en Égypte, mais reste dans le pays que je t’indiquerai.	2 And the Lord appeared to him, and he said: “Do not descend into Egypt, but rest in the land that I will tell you,
3 Reste dans ce pays, je serai avec toi et je te bénirai. Je donnerai tout ce pays à toi et à ta descendance, car je veux tenir le serment que j’ai fait à ton père Abraham.	3 and sojourn in it, and I will be with you, and I will bless you. For to you and to your offspring I will give all these regions, completing the oath that I promised to Abraham your father.
4 Je rendrai ta descendance aussi nombreuse que les étoiles du ciel et je lui donnerai tout ce pays. Toutes les nations de la terre se verront bénies en ta descendance,	4 And I will multiply your offspring like the stars of heaven. And I will give to your posterity all these regions. And in your offspring all the nations of the earth will be blessed,
5 parce qu’Abraham a écouté ma voix, qu’il m’a obéi et qu’il a observé mes ordres, mes commandements et mes lois.”	5 because Abraham obeyed my voice, and kept my precepts and commandments, and observed the ceremonies and the laws.”
6 Isaac habita donc à Guérar.	6 And so Isaac remained in Gerar.
7 Quand les gens du pays lui posaient des questions sur sa femme, il répondait: “C’est ma sœur.” En effet il avait peur de dire: “C’est ma femme”, car il se disait: “Les gens du pays vont me tuer à cause de Rébecca car elle est très belle.”	7 And when he was questioned by the men of that place about his wife, he answered, “She is my sister.” For he was afraid to confess her to be his mate, thinking that perhaps they would put him to death because of her beauty.
8 Il était là depuis longtemps déjà quand Abimélek, roi des Philistins, qui regardait par sa fenêtre, vit Isaac en train de caresser sa femme Rébecca.	8 And when very many days had passed, and he had remained in the same place, Abimelech, king of the Palestinians, gazing through a window, saw him being playful with Rebekah, his wife.
9 Abimélek appela Isaac: “C’est sûrement ta femme, lui dit-il, pourquoi as-tu dit qu’elle était ta sœur?” Isaac répondit: “C’est que je risquais de mourir à cause d’elle.”	9 And summoning him, he said: “It is clear that she is your wife. Why did you falsely claim her to be your sister?” He answered, “I was afraid, lest I might die because of her.”
10 Abimélek lui dit: “Regarde ce que tu as fait! Encore un peu et quelqu’un du peuple couchait avec ta femme, et tu nous faisais porter le poids d’une faute.”	10 And Abimelech said: “Why have you burdened us? Someone from the people could have lain with your wife, and you would have brought a great sin upon us.” And he instructed all the people, saying,
11 Abimélek donna donc cet ordre à tout le peuple: “Quiconque touchera à cet homme ou à sa femme, sera mis à mort.”	11 “Whoever will touch the wife of this man will die a death.”
12 Cette année-là, Isaac sema dans ce pays et récolta cent pour un. Yahvé le bénit	12 Then Isaac sowed in that land, and he found, in that same year, one hundredfold. And the Lord blessed him.
13 et l’homme devint riche, de plus en plus riche, jusqu’à devenir très riche.	13 And the man was enriched, and he continued prospering as well as increasing, until he became very great.
14 Ses troupeaux de petit bétail, ses troupeaux de gros bétail et ses nombreux serviteurs rendaient les Philistins jaloux.	14 Likewise, he had possessions of sheep and of herds, and a very large family. Because of this, the Palestinians envied him,
15 Les Philistins bouchèrent donc, en les remplissant de terre, tous les puits que les serviteurs de son père Abraham avaient creusés en son temps.	15 so, at that time, they obstructed all the wells that the servants of his father Abraham had dug, filling them with soil.
16 Abimélek lui-même dit à Isaac: “Va-t’en de chez nous! Tu es devenu trop puissant pour nous.”	16 It reached a point where Abimelech himself said to Isaac, “Move away from us, for you have become very much more powerful than we.”
17 Isaac partit donc de cet endroit et il campa dans la vallée de Guérar. C’est là qu’il résida.	17 And departing, he then went toward the torrent of Gerar, and he dwelt there.
18 Isaac creusa de nouveau les puits qu’on avait creusés au temps d’Abraham, son père, et que les Philistins avaient bouchés après la mort d’Abraham. Il leur donna les mêmes noms que son père leur avait donnés.	18 Again, he dug up other wells, which the servants of his father Abraham had dug, and which, after his death, the Philistines had formerly obstructed. And he called them by the same names that his father had called them before.
19 Les serviteurs d’Isaac creusèrent alors dans la vallée et ils y trouvèrent un puits d’eau vive.	19 And they dug in the torrent, and they found living water.
20 Les bergers de Guérar vinrent discuter avec les bergers d’Isaac: “L’eau est à nous!”, disaient-ils. Isaac appela donc le puits du nom d’Ések (c’est-à-dire: Dispute), parce qu’ils s’étaient disputés.	20 But in that place also the shepherds of Gerar argued against the shepherds of Isaac, by saying, “It is our water.” For this reason, he called the name of the well, because of what had happened, ‘Calumny.’
21 Ils creusèrent un autre puits, et cette fois encore on leur fit une querelle. Il appela donc ce puits Sitna (c’est-à-dire: Désaccord).	21 Then they dug up yet another one. And over that one also they fought, and he called it, ‘Enmity.’
22 Il partit plus loin, creusa un autre puits, et là, on ne leur fit pas d’histoires. Il appela donc ce puits Réhobot (c’est-à-dire: Au large), car il disait: “Maintenant, Yahvé nous a mis au large, nous allons nous développer dans ce pays.”	22 Advancing from there, he dug another well, over which they did not contend. And so he called its name, ‘Latitude,’ saying, “Now the Lord has expanded us and caused us to increase across the land.”
23 Il partit de là pour Bersabée.	23 Then he ascended from that place into Beersheba,
24 Yahvé lui apparut cette nuit-là et lui dit: “Je suis le Dieu d’Abraham, ton père. N’aie pas peur, je suis avec toi, je te bénirai et je multiplierai ta descendance à cause d’Abraham, mon serviteur.”	24 where the Lord appeared to him on the same night, saying: “I am the God of Abraham your father. Do not be afraid, for I am with you. I will bless you, and I will multiply your offspring because of my servant Abraham.”
25 Il construisit là un autel et invoqua le nom de Yahvé. Il y monta sa tente, et là aussi ses serviteurs creusèrent un puits.	25 And so he built an altar there. And he invoked the name of the Lord, and he stretched out his tent. And he instructed his servants to dig a well.
26 De Guérar, Abimélek vint à la rencontre d’Isaac avec Akhouzzat, son ami, et Pikol, le chef de son armée.	26 When Abimelech, and Ahuzzath, his friend, and Phicol, the leader of the military, had arrived from Gerar to that place,
27 Isaac leur dit: “Pourquoi êtes-vous venus vers moi, puisque vous me détestez et que vous m’avez chassé de chez vous?”	27 Isaac said to them, “Why have you come to me, a man whom you hate, and whom you have expelled from among you?”
28 Ils répondirent: “Nous avons vu clairement que Yahvé était avec toi, aussi nous te disons: Qu’il y ait une paix jurée entre nous et toi. Concluons ensemble une alliance!	28 And they responded: “We saw that the Lord is with you, and therefore we said: Let there be an oath between us, and let us initiate a pact,
29 Nous ne t’avons pas fait de mal, nous ne t’avons fait que du bien et nous t’avons renvoyé en paix. Tu ne nous feras donc aucun mal non plus, maintenant que Yahvé t’a tout donné.”	29 so that you may not do us any kind of harm, just as we have touched nothing of yours, and have not caused any injury to you, but with peace we released you, augmented by the blessing of the Lord.”
30 Isaac leur prépara un bon repas, ils mangèrent et ils burent.	30 Therefore, he made them a feast, and after the food and drink,
31 Ils se levèrent de bon matin et se prêtèrent serment l’un à l’autre, puis Isaac les laissa partir et ils s’en allèrent de chez lui en paix.	31 arising in the morning, they swore to one another. And Isaac sent them away peacefully to their own place.
32 Ce jour-là, des serviteurs qui creusaient un puits vinrent trouver Isaac avec cette bonne nouvelle: “Nous avons trouvé de l’eau.”	32 Then, behold, on the same day the servants of Isaac came, reporting to him about a well which they had dug, and saying: “We have found water.”
33 Il appela le puits: Sabé (c’est-à-dire: Serment); c’est pour cela que la ville s’est appelée Bersabée (Puits du Serment) jusqu’à ce jour.	33 Therefore, he called it, ‘Abundance.’ And the name of the city was established as ‘Beersheba,’ even to the present day.
34 À l’âge de 40 ans, Ésaü épousa Judith fille de Bééri le Hittite, et Basmat, fille d’Élon le Hittite.	34 In truth, at forty years of age, Esau took wives: Judith, the daughter of Beeri, the Hittite, and Basemath, the daughter of Elon, of the same place.
35 Mais elles causèrent bien des ennuis à Isaac et à Rébecca.	35 And they both offended the mind of Isaac and Rebekah.
