1 E intervenne uno dì, che Ionata figliuolo di Saul disse a uno giovane suo scudiere: vieni, passiamo al campo de' Filistei il quale è di là da quello luogo. E questo non fece a sapere a suo padre.	1 One day Jonathan, son of Saul, said to his armor-bearer, "Come let us go over to the Philistine outpost on the other side." But he did not inform his father.
2 E Saul stava nella ultima parte di Gabaa sotto uno melo grano, il quale era nel (campo di) Magron; ed era con esso lui il popolo (di Gabaa) quasi di secento uomini.	2 (Saul's command post was under the pomegranate tree near the threshing floor on the outskirts of Geba; those with him numbered about six hundred men.
3 E Achia figliuolo di Achitob, fratello d' Icabod figliuolo di Finees, il quale nacque di Eli sacerdote di Dio in Silo, portava lo efod (cioè una veste sacerdotale). Il popolo non sapea dove Ionata fosse andato.	3 Ahijah, son of Ahitub, brother of Ichabod, who was the son of Phinehas, son of Eli, the priest of the LORD at Shiloh, was wearing the ephod.) Nor did the soldiers know that Jonathan had gone.
4 E nella montata, che Ionata si sforzava di fare per passare al campo de' Filistei, erano pietre alte da ogni parte, quasi in modo di denti (come luogo da far guardie) da ciascuna parte diritti. E uno di quelli luoghi avea nome Boses, e l'altro avea nome Sene.	4 Flanking the ravine through which Jonathan intended to get over to the Philistine outpost there was a rocky crag on each side, one called Bozez, the other Seneh.
5 E uno di questi luoghi era verso l' aquilone rincontro a Macmas, e l'altro a mezzogiorno contro a Gabaa.	5 One crag was to the north, toward Michmash, the other to the south, toward Geba.
6 E Ionata disse al giovane scudiere suo: vieni, passiamo al campo di questi (Filistei) incirconcisi; forse che Iddio sarà per noi, però che non è difficile al Signore a salvare con moltitudine, ovvero con pochi.	6 Jonathan said to his armor-bearer: "Come let us go over to that outpost of the uncircumcised. Perhaps the LORD will help us, because it is no more difficult for the LORD to grant victory through a few than through many."
7 E il scudiere disse: fa ciò che (ti) piace all'animo tuo; e va dovunque ti piace, e io sarò teco dovunque andrai.	7 His armor-bearer replied, "Do whatever you are inclined to do; I will match your resolve."
8 E Ionata disse: ecco, noi passiamo a questi uomini. Quando noi appariremo loro,	8 Jonathan continued: "We shall go over to those men and show ourselves to them.
9 se loro diranno a noi: ISTATE, TANTO CHE NOI VEGNAMO A VOI, istiamo nel luogo nostro, e non andiamo a loro.	9 If they say to us, 'Stay there until we can come to you,' we shall stop where we are; we shall not go up to them.
10 Ma se loro diranno: ASCENDETE A NOI, ascendiamo, però che Iddio gli ha dati nelle nostre mani; e questo ci sarà segnale.	10 But if they say, 'Come up to us,' we shall go up, because the LORD has delivered them into our grasp. That will be our sign."
11 E amendue apparvero al campo de' Filistei, e dissero li Filistei: ecco che gli Ebrei escono delle caverne, nelle quali erano nascosi.	11 Accordingly, the two of them appeared before the outpost of the Philistines, who said, "Look, some Hebrews are coming out of the holes where they have been hiding."
12 E gli uomini del campo dissero a Ionata e al suo scudiere: ascendete a noi, e mostreremo a voi la cosa. E Ionata disse al suo scudiere: ascendiamo; sèguitami, però che Iddio gli ha dati nelle (nostre) mani d' Israel.	12 The men of the outpost called to Jonathan and his armor-bearer. "Come up here," they said, "and we will teach you a lesson." So Jonathan said to his armor-bearer, "Climb up after me, for the LORD has delivered them into the grasp of Israel."
13 E ascendè Ionata colle mani e colli piedi, e il suo scudiere dopo lui. E (veggendo loro il viso di Ionata) altri ne cadeano dinanzi di Ionata, e altri uccidea il suo scudiere seguitando lui.	13 Jonathan clambered up with his armor-bearer behind him; as the Philistines turned to flee him, he cut them down, and his armor-bearer followed him and finished them off.
14 E fu fatta la prima piaga, la quale fece Ionata e il suo scudiere, quasi di XX uomini nel mezzo del campo, il quale uno paio di buoi solea arare in uno dì.	14 In this first exploit Jonathan and his armor-bearer slew about twenty men within half a furlong.
15 E fu fatto miracolo nel campo per li campi; e tutti i popoli del campo loro, li quali erano andati a rubare, isbigottirono e turbaronsi; e intervenne quasi miracolo da Dio.	15 Then panic spread to the army and to the countryside, and all the soldiers, including the outpost and the raiding parties, were terror-stricken. The earth also shook, so that the panic was beyond human endurance.
16 E le guardie di Saul, ch' erano in Gabaa di Beniamin, guardarono; e apparve una moltitudine a battaglia, e fuggia lae e qua.	16 The lookouts of Saul in Geba of Benjamin saw that the enemy camp had scattered and were running about in all directions.
17 E Saul disse al popolo il quale era con lui: cercate, e vedete chi è andato di noi. E cercato, fu trovato che Ionata non v' era, nè il suo scudiere.	17 Saul said to those around him, "Count the troops and find out if any of us are missing." When they had investigated, they found Jonathan and his armor-bearer missing.
18 E Saul disse ad Achia: TOLLI L' ARCA DI DIO; però che l'arca di Dio era in que' dì ivi coi figliuoli d' Israel.	18 Saul then said to Ahijah, "Bring the ephod here." (Ahijah was wearing the ephod in front of the Israelites at that time.)
19 E favellando Saul col sacerdote, grande rumore nacque nel campo de' Filistei; e a poco a poco crescea, e più chiaramente risonava. E disse Saul al sacerdote: ritrai la tua mano.	19 While Saul was speaking to the priest, the tumult in the Philistine camp kept increasing. So he said to the priest, "Withdraw your hand."
20 E gridò Saul, e tutto il popolo ch' era con lui; e vennero insino al luogo della battaglia. Ed ecco ch' era convertito il coltello di ciascuno verso il suo prossimo, e facea molto grande tagliata.	20 And Saul and all his men shouted and rushed into the fight, where the Philistines, wholly confused, were thrusting swords at one another.
21 E gli Ebrei, ch' erano istati ieri e l'altro con li Filistei, ed erano con esso loro nel campo, ritornarono per essere con esso Israel, il quale era con Saul e con Ionata.	21 In addition, the Hebrews who had previously sided with the Philistines and had gone up with them to the camp, turned to join the Israelites under Saul and Jonathan.
22 E tutti quelli d' Israel, i quali erano nascosi nel monte di Efraim, udendo che i Filistei fuggivano, accompagnaronsi co' suoi alla battaglia; ed erano con Saul [quasi] X milia uomini.	22 Likewise, all the Israelites who were hiding in the hill country of Ephraim, on hearing that the Philistines were fleeing, pursued them in the rout.
	23 Thus the LORD saved Israel that day. The battle continued past Beth-horon;
24 E accompagnaronsi insieme in quel dì gli uomini d' Israel; e (in quel dì) Saul scongiurò il popolo, dicendo: maledetto l'uomo che manucherà pane insino al vespro, tanto ch' io mi vendichi dei miei nemici. E tutto il popolo non mangiò pane.	24 the whole people, about ten thousand combatants, were with Saul, and there was scattered fighting in every town in the hill country of Ephraim. And Saul swore a very rash oath that day, putting the people under this ban: "Cursed be the man who takes food before evening, before I am able to avenge myself on my enemies." So none of the people tasted food.
25 E tutto il popolo venne nel bosco, dove che nel campo era miele.	25 Indeed, there was a honeycomb lying on the ground,
26 Ed entrò il popolo nel bosco; e apparve loro il miele, e non fu alcuno che si ponesse la mano alla bocca; però che il popolo temeva il giuramento.	26 and when the soldiers came to the comb the swarm had left it; yet no one would raise a hand to his mouth from it, because the people feared the oath.
27 Ma Ionata non avea udito, quando il padre avea scongiurato il popolo; ed estese la sommità della verga, la quale teneva in mano, e trassela nel miele; e portatosi la mano alla bocca, li suoi occhii furono alluminati.	27 Jonathan, who had not heard that his father had put the people under oath, thrust out the end of the staff he was holding and dipped in into the honey. Then he raised it to his mouth and his eyes lit up.
28 E uno del popolo respondendo disse: per giuramento costrinse il tuo padre il popolo, dicendo: maledetto chi mangerà oggi pane. E il popolo era allassato.	28 At this one of the soldiers spoke up: "Your father put the people under a strict oath, saying, 'Cursed be the man who takes food this day!' As a result the people are weak."
29 E disse Ionata: il mio padre hae turbata la terra; voi istessi avete veduti gli occhii miei che sono alluminati, perchè io hoe assaggiato uno poco di questo miele.	29 Jonathan replied: "My father brings trouble to the land. Look how bright my eyes are from this small taste of honey I have had.
30 Quanto maggiormente, se il popolo avesse manicato della preda che hae trovata de' loro nemici! Non sarebb' ella istata maggiore la piaga fatta nelli Filistei?	30 What is more, if the people had eaten freely today of their enemy's booty when they came across it, would not the slaughter of the Philistines by now have been the greater for it?"
31 E in quel dì percossono li Filistei di Macmis insino ad Aialon. Ma il popolo s' affaticò troppo.	31 After the Philistines were routed that day from Michmash to Aijalon, the people were completely exhausted.
32 E tornato alla preda, sì tolsero pecore e bovi e vitelli, e ucciserli in terra; e mangiò il popolo con sangue.	32 So they pounced upon the spoil and took sheep, oxen and calves, slaughtering them on the ground and eating the flesh with blood.
33 E significarono a Saul, che il popolo avea peccato a Dio, mangiando con sangue. Il quale disse: voi avete offeso; ma volgete a me uno sasso grande.	33 Informed that the people were sinning against the LORD by eating the flesh with blood, Saul said: "You have broken faith. Roll a large stone here for me."
34 E disse Saul: ìspargetevi per lo popolo, e dite loro, che ciascuno rechi il suo bue e il suo castrone a me, e uccidetegli sopra questo sasso, e manicate, e non peccherete a Dio mangiando con sangue. E tutto il popolo portò ciascuno nella sua mano il (suo) bue, insino a tanto che fu notte; e uccisergli ivi.	34 He continued: "Mingle with the people and tell each of them to bring his ox or his sheep to me. Slaughter it here and then eat, but you must not sin against the LORD by eating the flesh with blood." So everyone brought to the LORD whatever ox he had seized, and they slaughtered them there;
35 E Saul edificò lo altare a Dio. E allora fu la prima fiata, ch' el cominciasse a edificare lo altare a Dio.	35 and Saul built an altar to the LORD--this was the first time he built an altar to the LORD.
36 E disse Saul: assaliamo questa notte i Filistei; insino che si faccia il dì, gli guastiamo, e non ne lasciamo alcuno di loro. E disse il popolo ciò che negli occhii tuoi pare buono, fa. E disse il sacerdote: andiamo quiritta al Signore.	36 Then Saul said, "Let us go down in pursuit of the Philistines by night, to plunder among them until daybreak and to kill them all off." They replied, "Do what you think best." But the priest said, "Let us consult God."
37 E domandò Saul consiglio a Dio, e disse: persèguito io ora i Filistei? Dara'gli tu nelle mie mani? E non gli respuose in quel dì.	37 So Saul inquired of God: "Shall I go down in pursuit of the Philistines? Will you deliver them into the power of Israel?" But he received no answer on this occasion.
38 E Saul disse: appressate il popolo qua, ? vedete e sapete, per cui è commesso questo peccato oggi.	38 Saul then said, "Come here, all officers of the army. We must investigate and find out how this sin was committed today.
39 Vive il Signore, salvadore d' Israel, che se per Ionata mio figliuolo è commesso, senza ritrattazione sarà morto. Alla qual cosa niuno del popolo contradisse.	39 As the LORD lives who has given victory to Israel, even if my son Jonathan has committed it, he shall surely die!" But none of the people answered him.
40 E disse a tutto Israel: istate tutti voi da una parte, io e Ionata mio figliuolo istaremo dall'altra parte. E rispuose il popolo : quello che negli occhii tuoi pare buono, fa.	40 So he said to all Israel, "Stand on one side, and I and my son Jonathan will stand on the other." The people responded, "Do what you think best."
41 E Saul disse al Signore: Signore Iddio d' Israel, dà segnale: che è ciò che tu non hae oggi risposto a me servo tuo? Se in me, ovvero in Ionata mio figliuolo, è questa iniquità, dimostralo; o se ella è nel popolo, dà santità. E furono presi Saul e Ionata; e il popolo istette cheto.	41 And Saul said to the LORD, the God of Israel: "Why did you not answer your servant this time? If the blame for this resides in me or my son Jonathan, LORD, God of Israel, respond with Urim; but if this guilt is in your people Israel, respond with Thummim." Jonathan and Saul were designated, and the people went free.
42 E Saul disse: mettete le sorti intra me e Ionata mio figliuolo. E fu preso Ionata.	42 Saul then said, "Cast lots between me and my son Jonathan." And Jonathan was designated.
43 E Saul disse a Ionata: manifestami quello che tu hai fatto. E Ionata glielo manifestò, e disse: io hoe assaggiato uno poco di miele colla sommità della verga la quale io tenea in mano, ed ecco ch' io muoio.	43 Saul said to Jonathan, "Tell me what you have done." Jonathan replied, "I only tasted a little honey from the end of the staff I was holding. Am I to die for this?"
44 E Saul disse: questo mi faccia Iddio, e questo m' aggiunga, Ionata, chè tu sarai morto.	44 Saul said, "May God do thus and so to me if you do not indeed die, Jonathan!"
45 E il popolo disse a Saul: dunque ora morirà Ionata, il quale ha fatto sì grande salute in Israel (oggi)? Questa non è cosa convenevole; vive il Signore, che non caderà capello del suo capo in terra, però che con esso Iddio hae operato oggi. Onde il popolo liberò Ionata, acciò che non fosse morto.	45 But the army said to Saul: "Is Jonathan to die, though it was he who brought Israel this great victory? This must not be! As the LORD lives, not a single hair of his head shall fall to the ground, for God was with him in what he did today!" Thus the soldiers were able to rescue Jonathan from death.
46 E però Saul si partì, e non perseguitò li Filistei; e se n' andarono i Filistei ai luoghi loro.	46 After that Saul gave up the pursuit of the Philistines, who returned to their own territory.
47 E Saul, confermato il regno sopra Israel, combattea dintorno contra tutti gli nemici suoi, e contro a Moab e li figliuoli di Ammon [e di Edom] e li re di Soba, e i Filistei: e in quale parte si volgea, sì vincea.	47 After taking over the kingship of Israel, Saul waged war on all their surrounding enemies--Moab, the Ammonites, Aram, Beth-rehob, the king of Zobah, and the Philistines. Wherever he turned, he was successful
48 E raunato lo esercito, percosse Amalec; e liberò Israel delle mani di quelli che gli disertavano.	48 and fought bravely. He defeated Amalek and delivered Israel from the hands of those who were plundering them.
49 E i figliuoli di Saul furono Ionata e Iessuì e Melchisua; il nome di due sue figliuole, il nome della primagenita Merob, il nome della minore Micol.	49 The sons of Saul were Jonathan, Ishvi, and Malchishua; his two daughters were named, the elder, Merob, and the younger, Michal.
50 E il nome della moglie di Saul, Achinoam figliuola di Achimaas; il nome dello principe della sua milizia Abner, figliuolo di Ner, lo quale fu fratello del padre (cioè) di Saul.	50 Saul's wife, who was named Ahinoam, was the daughter of Ahimaaz. The name of his general was Abner, son of Saul's uncle, Ner;
51 E Cis era istato padre di Saul, e Ner padre di Abner, figliuolo di Abiel.	51 Kish, Saul's father, and Ner, Abner's father, were sons of Abiel.
52 Ed era guerra potente con i Filistei, [tutto] il tempo di Saul. E qualunque vedea Saul, uomo forte e atto a battaglia, egli l'accompagnava a sè.	52 An unremitting war was waged against the Philistines during Saul's lifetime. When Saul saw any strong or brave man, he took him into his service.
