1 E avendo udite tutte quante queste cose di sopra scritte, tutti quanti i re di qua dal (fiume) Giordano, i quali istavano in su i monti e ne' piani e nelle maremme, e alla riva del mare maggiore, e ancora coloro i quali abitavano al lato al Libano, cioè l' Eteo e l' Amorreo e il Cananeo e il Ferezeo e l' Eveo e il Iebuseo,	1 Now When these things were heard of, all the kings beyond the Jordan, that dwelt in the mountains and in the plains, in the places near the sea, and on the coasts of the great sea, they also that dwell by Libanus, the Hethite and the Amorrhite, the Chanaanite, the Pherezite, and the Hevite, and the Jebusite,
2 tutti insieme in uno si raunarono, acciò che combatteseno con Iosuè e con Israel, e con uno animo in una medesima sentenza.	2 Gathered themselves together, to fight against Josue and Israel with one mind, and one resolution.
3 Ma coloro i quali abitavano in Gabaon, udendo tutte quelle cose che avea fatte Iosuè a Gerico e ad Ai,	3 But they that dwelt in Gabaon, hearing all that Josue had done to Jericho and Hai:
4 pensando maliziosamente, si tolsero cibi con loro, e miserli in sacchi vecchi, e puosergli in su gli asini, e otri da vino discuciti e rotti,	4 Cunningly devising took for themselves provisions, laying old sacks upon their asses, and wine bottles rent and sewed up again,
5 e calzamenti antichissimi in piedi, i quali mostrassero, e fosse segno che fossono consumati e invecchiati per lo lungo viaggio; e i pani che portavano parevano duri (per lo lungo viaggio) ed erano tutti rotti per pezzi.	5 And very old shoes, which for a show of age were clouted with patches, and old garments upon them: the leaves also, which they carried for provisions by the way, were hard, and broken into pieces:
6 E andarono a Iosuè, il quale istava allora (nell' oste e) nel campo in Galgala, e si andarono a lui e a tutti i figliuoli d' Israel con queste cose, e sì gli dissero di terra molto lungi vegnamo, desiderando di fare pace. E respuosono loro i figliuoli d' Israel:	6 And they went to Josue, who then abode in the camp at Galgal, and said to him, and to all Israel with him: We are come from a far country, desiring to make peace with you. And the children of Israel answered them, and said:
7 Guardate che voi forse non istiate nella terra che ci è data in sorte, e che non possiate abitare nè fare patto (nè ligamento) con esso noi.	7 Perhaps you dwell in the land which falls to our lot; if so, we can make no league with you.
8 E' dissono a Iosuè; noi ti diciamo che noi siamo tuoi servi. Ai quali disse Iosuè: chi siete voi? e d'onde venite?	8 But they said to Josue: We are thy servants. Josue said to them: Who are you? and whence came you?
9 E rispuosono, e dissono: di terra molto di lungi sono venuti i tuoi servi, in nome di Dio tuo Signore; imperciò che noi udimmo la fama della grande potenza, e tutte le cose che fece in Egitto,	9 They answered: From a very far country thy servants are come in the name of the Lord thy God. For we have heard the fame of his power, all the things that he did in Egypt.
10 e a' due re degli Amorrei, di là dal (fiume) Giordano, a Seon re di Esebon e ad Og re di Basan, i quali erano in Astarot.	10 And to the two kings of the Amorrhites that were beyond the Jordan, Sehon king of Hesebon, and Og king of Basan, that was in Astaroth:
11 E dissonci li nostri antichi e tutti gli abitatori della terra nostra: togliete nelle vostre mani cibi, per cagione della grande e lunga rotta (la quale avete a fare), e andate incontro a loro, e si dite: noi siamo vostri servi, fate patto con esso noi.	11 And our ancients, and all the inhabitants of our country said to us: Take with you victuals for a long way, and go meet them, and say: We are your servants, make ye a league with us.
12 Ecco; i pani, quando uscimmo fuori delle case nostre per venire a voi, caldi gli togliemmo; e ora sono fatti secchi, e per la troppo vecchiezza sono rotti (e spezzati).	12 Behold, these leaves we took hot, when we set out from our houses to come to you, now they are become dry, and broken in pieces, by being exceeding old.
13 E gli otri nuovi, gli empiemmo di vino; ed ecco ora sono rotti e discuciti; i vestimenti e i calzamenti, i quali mettiamo e abbiamo in piede, per la lunghezza della lunga via sì sono rotti e (stracciati) quasi consumati.	13 These bottles of wine when we filled them were new, now they are rent and burst. These garments we have on, and the shoes we have on our feet, by reason of the very long journey are worn out, and almost consumed.
14 E pigliarono (i figliuoli d' Israel) delli cibi loro; e non richiesono nella bocca di Dio, che dicesse.	14 They took therefore of their victuals, and consulted not the mouth of the Lord.
15 E fece Iosuè pace con loro; e fatto il patto, promise loro che non sarebbono morti; e ancora i principi, i quali erano sopra la moltitudine, sì 'l giurarono loro.	15 And Josue made peace with them, and entering into a league promised that they should not be slain: the princes also of the multitude swore to them.
16 Ma passati i tre dì, poi che fu fatto (e confermato) il patto, sì udirono ch' egli abitavano loro presso, e sì erano loro vicini, e come doveano essere tra loro.	16 Now three days after the league was made, they heard that they dwelt nigh, and they should be among them.
17 E mossono (l'oste e) il campo i figliuoli d'Israel, e vennero il terzo dì nelle città di costoro. E questi sono i vocaboli loro: Gabaon, Cafira e Berot e Cariatiarim.	17 And the children of Israel removed the camp, and came into their cities on the third day, the names of which are Gabaon, and Caphira, and Beroth, and Cariathiarim.
18 E non fecero male niuno, però che aveano loro giurato i principi della moltitudine nel nome di Dio Signore d' Israel. E mormorò tutto il popolo contro a' principi.	18 And they slew them not, because the princes of the multitude had sworn in the name of the Lord the God of Israel. Then all the common people murmured against the princes.
19 E sì dissono e rispuosono loro i principi: noi giurammo loro nel nome di Dio d' Israel, e imperciò noi non gli possiamo toccare.	19 And they answered them: We have sworn to them in the name of the Lord the God of Israel, and therefore we may not touch them.
20 Ma questo faremo loro: conservinsi e vivano, acciò che l'ira di Dio non si conciti (e muovasi) contra noi, se noi ci spergiurassimo.	20 But this we mill do to them: Let their lives be saved, lest the wrath of the Lord be stirred up against us, if we should be forsworn.
21 Ma vivano in questo modo, che loro taglino legna al bisogno di tutta quanta la moltitudine, portino l'acqua. A' quali dicendo queste parole,	21 But so let them live, as to serve the whole multitude in hewing wood, and bringing in water. As they were speaking these things,
22 chiamò Iosuè i Gabaoniti, e disse loro: perchè ci voleste ingannare di questo inganno, che molto da lungi abitiamo di voi, conciosia cosa che voi siate nel mezzo di noi?	22 Josue called the Gabaonites and said to them: Why would you impose upon us, saying: We dwell far off from you, whereas you are in the midst of us?
23 Adunque però sarete sotto maledizione (e sotto servitudine), e non sarà niuno nella vostra città che rimanga di tagliare legna e di portare acqua nella casa di Dio nostro Signore.	23 Therefore you shall be under a curse, and your race shall always be hewers of wood, and carriers of water unto the house of my God.
24 I quali sì rispuosono, e dissono: e' fue annunziato e detto a' servi tuoi, che Iddio tuo Signore avesse promesso a Moisè servo suo, che vi (metterebbe nelle mani e) darebbe ogni terra, e sì ucciderebbe tutti gli abitatori suoi; e imperciò noi avevamo grandissima paura, e sì provedemmo all' anime nostre, (isbigottiti e) costretti della vostra paura; e però facemmo e ordinammo questo consiglio.	24 They answered: It was told us thy servants, that the Lord thy God had promised his servant Moses to give you all the land, and to destroy all the inhabitants thereof. Therefore we feared exceedingly and provided for our lives. compelled by the dread we had of you and we took this counsel.
25 Ma ecco che ora siamo nelle tue mani; quello che ti pare buono e diritto, sì ci fa.	25 And now we are in thy hand: deal with us as it seemeth good and right unto thee.
26 E fece Iosuè come avea detto; e sì gli liberò delle mani de' figliuoli d' Israel, acciò che non fossono morti.	26 So Josue did as he had said, and delivered them from the hand of the children of Israel, that they should not be slain.
27 E sì ordinò (e determinò) quel dì, che fossono in servigio di tutto il popolo e dell' altare di Dio, tagliando legna e portando l'acqua, insino al (dì e al) tempo presente, in quello luogo che Iddio Signore eleggesse.	27 And he gave orders in that day that they should be in the service of all the people, and of the altar of the Lord, hewing wood and carrying water, until this present time, in the place which the Lord hath chosen.
