1 E disse Iddio a Iosuè: non avere paura e non ti sbigottire, piglia teco insieme tutta la moltitudine de' combattitori, e lièvati e va giuso al castello di Ai; ecco (insino a qui) io ho dato nelle tue mani il re suo, il popolo e la cittade e la terra.	1 Then the Lord said to Joshua: “You should not fear, and you should not dread. Take with you the entire multitude of fighters, and rising up, ascend to the town of Ai. Behold, I have delivered into your hand its king and people, and the city and the land.
2 E farai alla cittade (e alla terra) di Ai (e a tutta la contrada) come facesti a Gerico e al re suo; ma la preda e tutti gli animali piglierete per voi: poni alla città agguati dietro.	2 And you shall do to the city of Ai, and to its king, just as you did to Jericho, and to its king. Yet truly, the spoils, and all the living things, you shall plunder for yourselves. Set an ambush against the city behind it.”
3 E levossi suso Iosuè, e tutto quanto l'oste de' (buoni) combattitori con esso lui, acciò che andassero ad Ai; ed eletti trenta milia uomini, i più forti, sì gli mandò di notte.	3 And Joshua rose up, and the entire army of warriors with him, so that they might ascend against Ai. And he sent thirty thousand elect strong men in the night.
4 E comandò loro, e disse: ponete lo agguato di dietro alla cittade, e non vi partite (molto) di lungi, ma istarete tutti apparecchiati.	4 And he instructed them, saying: “Set an ambush behind the city. You shall withdraw not far away, and let everyone be prepared.
5 E io, insieme con tutta l'altra moltitudine della gente con meco, anderemo giuso verso la cittade; e uscendone egli contro a noi, volgeremo loro le spalle, come facemmo l' altrieri, e fuggiremo	5 But I and the remainder of the multitude that is with me will approach from the opposite side of the city. And when they come out against us, we will flee and turn our backs, just as we did before,
6 insino a tanto loro n' avranno cacciati, e saranno dilungati dalla cittade; imperciò che loro penseranno che noi fuggiamo, come fecimo l'altieri.	6 until, pursuing us, they are drawn away from the city. For they will think that we are fleeing as before.
7 E fuggendo noi, ed egli perseguitandoci, levaretevi suso dell' agguato, e sì guasterete la cittade; e Iddio vostro Signore sì la darà in vostre mani.	7 Then, while we are fleeing and they are pursuing, you shall rise up from the ambush, and you shall lay waste to the city. And the Lord your God will deliver it into your hands.
8 E poi che l'avrete presa, sì l'arderete (e sì vi metterete il fuoco dentro); e tutte queste cose, come io vi ho comandato, così farete.	8 And when you have seized it, set it on fire. And you shall do all that I have ordered.”
9 E lassolli andare, e loro andarono (al luogo dell' agguato, e istetteno) tra Betel e Ai dalla parte dell' occidente (dove tramonta il sole) verso la cittade di Ai; e Iosuè tutta quella notte istette in mezzo del popolo.	9 And he sent them away, and they traveled to the place of the ambush, and they settled between Bethel and Ai, toward the western region of the city of Ai. But Joshua remained for that night in the midst of the people.
10 E levandosi in sul dì, sì raunò tutti i suoi compagni, e andò giuso con tutti gli antichi del popolo nel capo dell' oste, attorniato tutto dallo ausilio de' combattitori.	10 And rising at first light, he reviewed his troops, and he went up, with the elders at the front of the army, surrounded by an auxiliary of fighters.
11 E vegnendone egli, e saliendo suso verso la cittade, stetteno dalla parte del settentrione della cittade; tra la quale cittade e loro era in mezzo una valle.	11 And when they had arrived, and had ascended from the opposite side of the city, they stood toward the northern region of the city. And there was a valley in the middle, between them and the city.
12 Ma Iosuè avea eletti cinque milia uomini, e quelli posti in agguato tra Betel e Ai, dalla parte dell' occidente di quella cittade.	12 Now he had chosen five thousand men, and he had positioned them in ambush between Bethel and Ai, at the western part of the same city.
13 Ma tutto quanto l'altro oste dirizzava (la battaglia e) le schiere dalla parte d'aquilone; intanto era grande l'oste degli ultimi (cioè la coda) che aggiugnevano insino dalla parte della cittade (dalla parte d' occidente) dove il sole tramonta. E andò Iosuè; e in quella notte istette in mezzo di quella valle.	13 Yet truly, all the remainder of the army was arranged in a line to the north, so that the very end of that multitude reached to the western region of the city. Then Joshua went out that night, and he stood in the middle of the valley.
14 Il quale veggendo il re di Ai, affrettossi la mattina, e uscì fuori con tutto l'oste della cittade; e dirizzò le schiere (e la battaglia) verso la parte che istava dirimpetto al deserto, non sapendo che dietro a lui fossero nascosti gli agguati.	14 And when the king of Ai had seen this, he hurried in the morning, and he went out with the entire army of the city. And he arranged them in a line opposite the desert, not knowing that an ambush lay hidden behind his back.
15 Ma Iosuè [e tutto Israel] (vedendo il re, che l'oste suo venia contro a lui) diedono luogo, mostrando d' avere paura, e fuggendo per la via della solitudine.	15 Yet truly, Joshua, and all of Israel, withdrew from the place, pretending to be afraid, and fleeing along the way of the wilderness.
16 E quelli, gridando loro dietro, tutti insieme istringendosi, sì gli perseguitarono (fortemente); e partitisi dalla città da lungi,	16 And they pursued them, shouting together and encouraging one another. And when they had withdrawn from the city,
17 e non essendo rimasa persona niuna nella cittade di Ai e di Betel, la quale non perseguitasse Israel; come in prima erano usciti fuori, lasciando le castella aperte;	17 and indeed not one remained in the city of Ai and of Bethel who did not pursue after Israel, (leaving the towns open after they had rushed out,)
18 disse Iddio a Iosuè: leva alto il scudo, che hae in mano, verso la cittade di Ai; imperciò ch' io te lo darò.	18 the Lord said to Joshua: “Lift up the shield that is in your hand, toward the city of Ai. For I will deliver it to you.”
19 E levando Iosuè il scudo verso la cittade, e contro gli agguati che stavano nascosti, immantenente si levarono suso; e andando dentro dalla cittade, sì la pigliarono, e miservi dentro fuoco.	19 And when he had lifted up the shield toward the city, the ambush, which lay hidden, rose up quickly. And advancing to the city, they seized it, and set it on fire.
20 E guardando gli uomini della cittade, i quali perseguitavano Israel, e veggendo il fumo della cittade che ardeva salire insino al cielo, non poteano oltre più andare nè qua nè là, e ispecialmente perchè coloro i quali aveano mostrato di fuggire andando per la solitudine, volgendosi contro a loro, fortemente avessono loro contrastato.	20 Now the men of the city who were pursuing Joshua, looking back and seeing the smoke of the city rising up even to heaven, were no longer able to flee in one direction or another, especially since those who had pretended to flee, and who were heading toward the wilderness, had turned back very strongly against those who were pursuing them.
21 E veggendo Iosuè che la cittade era presa, e che il fumo della cittade che ardeva si andava molto in alto, voltossi (e andò contro a nemici) e sì percosse (e uccise) gli uomini di Ai.	21 And Joshua, and all of Israel, seeing that the city had been captured, and that the smoke of the city was ascending, returned and struck down the men of Ai.
22 E ancora coloro i quali aveano presa e messa al fuoco la cittade, uscendo fuori della cittade contro a' nemici loro che erano in mezzo, (percossono adosso e) cominciarongli a ferire; ed essendo tagliati i nemici d'ogni parte, intanto furono tagliati e morti, che uno solo di tanta moltitudine non iscampò.	22 Then too, those who had seized and set the city on fire, departing from the city toward their own men, began to strike the enemies in the middle. Therefore, since the adversaries were cut off from both sides, none of so great a multitude was saved.
23 Ma il re della città di Ai sì pigliarono vivo, e presentaronlo a Iosuè.	23 Also, they apprehended the king of the city of Ai, alive, and they brought him before Joshua.
24 E poi che furono tutti morti [coloro] i quali aveano perseguitato Israel andando verso il deserto, e in questo medesimo luogo atterrati colle coltella e morti, tornarono i figliuoli d' Irael, e cacciarono a terra la cittade.	24 And so, after all were slain who had pursued Israel fleeing toward the wilderness, and after they fell by the sword in the same place, the sons of Israel returned and struck the city.
25 E sì era in numero, coloro i quali quello medesimo di aveano tagliati, dagli uomini insino alle femine, da dodici milia persone, della città di Ai tutti.	25 Now there were twelve thousand persons who had fallen on the same day, from man even to woman, the entire city of Ai.
26 Ma Iosuè non tirò a sè la mano (e il braccìo) che tenea isteso in alto, tenendo il scudo, persino che furono morti tutti quelli che abitavano nella città di Ai.	26 Truly Joshua did not draw back his hand, which he had stretched out on high, keeping hold of the shield until all the inhabitants of Ai were put to death.
27 Ma gli animali e la preda della cittade sì divisero i figliuoli d' Israel per loro, sì come Iddio avea comandato a Iosuè.	27 Then the sons of Israel divided among themselves the cattle and the plunder of the city, just as the Lord had instructed Joshua.
28 Il quale sì arse la cittade, e sì la fece sepolcro (perpetuo e) sempiterno.	28 And he set fire to the city, and he caused it to be a perpetual tomb.
29 E quello re sì appiccò in su la croce insino al vespro al tramontare del sole; e poi comandò Iosuè, e fue posto a terra il corpo morto suo della croce; e sì lo gittarono dentro nella entrata della cittade, raunato sopra lui e posto uno grande monte di pietre, il quale vi sta insino al dì d' oggi.	29 Also, he suspended the king on a gallows, until evening and the setting of the sun. And Joshua instructed, and they took down his dead body from the hanging tree. And they cast it at the very entrance of the city, gathering a great pile of stones upon it, which remains even to the present day.
30 E allora edificò Iosuè uno altare a Dio, Signore d' Israel, nel monte di Ebal,	30 Then Joshua built an altar to the Lord, the God of Israel, on Mount Ebal,
31 come avea comandato Moisè servo di Dio a' figliuoli d' Israel, e come è scritto nel volume della legge di Moisè (servo di Dio); e fece l'altare di pietre non polite (nè conce), le quali ferro non avea tocco; e sopra questo altare sì offerse sacrificio a Dio Signore, e sì offerse sacrificio di pace.	31 just as Moses, the servant of the Lord, had instructed to the sons of Israel, and this was written in the book of the law of Moses: truly, an altar of uncut stones, which iron has not touched. And he offered holocausts upon it to the Lord, and he immolated victims as peace-offerings.
32 E iscrisse sopra le pietre il Deuteronomio della legge di Moisè, il quale avea iscritto (e fatto) dinanzi ai figliuoli d'Israel.	32 And he wrote on the stones, the Deuteronomy of the law of Moses, which he had set in order before the sons of Israel.
33 Ma tutto l'altro popolo, e tutti coloro i quali erano più nobili, e duchi e giudici, sì stavano dall'una parte e dall'altra dell' arca (dirimpetto e) in presenza de' preti (e de' leviti) i quali portavano l'arca del patto di Dio Signore, così i forestieri come i terrazzani; l' una metà di loro presso (e da lato) al monte di Garizim, e l'altra metà a lato al monte di Ebal, come avea comandato Moisè servo di Dio. E in prima sì benedisse Iosuè il popolo d' Israel.	33 Then all the people, and those greater by birth, and the commanders and judges were standing on both sides of the ark, in the sight of the priests who were carrying the ark of the covenant of the Lord, with both the new arrival and the native born, one half part of them beside Mount Gerizim, and one half beside Mount Ebal, just as Moses, the servant of the Lord, had instructed. And first, certainly, he blessed the people of Israel.
34 E dopo questo sì lesse tutte le parole della benedizione e della maledizione, e tutte quelle cose le quali erano scritte nel volume della legge.	34 After this, he read all the words of the blessing and the cursing, and all the things that were written in the book of the law.
35 Di tutte quante quelle cose, che avea comandato Moisè, non lasciò niuna che non facesse; ma ogni cosa ricapitolò e disse innanzi alla moltitudine de' figliuoli d' Israel, alle femine e alli fanciulli e alli foresfieri che abitavano (e istavano) con loro.	35 He left nothing untouched out of those things that Moses had ordered, and he repeated everything before the entire multitude of Israel, with the women and the little ones, and the new arrivals who were staying among them.
