1 Queste sono le parole le quali parlò Moisè a tutti i figliuoli d'Israel, di là dal fiume Giordano, nel piano del deserto verso il mare rosso nella terra di Faran e di Tofel, e Laban e Aserot, dove è (copia e) abbondanza d'oro,	1 These are the words, which Moses spoke to all Israel beyond the Jordan, in the plain wilderness, over against the Red Sea, between Pharan and Thophel and Laban and Haseroth, where there is very much gold:
2 undici dì (continui) di Oreb per la via del monte di Seir insino a Cadesbarne.	2 Eleven days' journey from Horeb by the way of Mount Seir to Cadesbarne.
3 Nella fine di quaranta anni, nell'undecimo mese, il primo dì del mese parlò Moisè ai figliuoli d'Israel tutte quelle cose, che Iddio gli avea comandate che dicesse loro,	3 In the fortieth year, the eleventh month, the first day of the month, Moses spoke to the children of Israel all that the Lord had commanded him to say to them:
4 poi che uccise Seon re degli Amorrei il quale abitava in Esebon, e Og re di Basan il quale istette in Astarot e in Edrai,	4 After that he had slain Sehon king of the Amorrhites, who dwelt in Hesebon: and Og king of Basan who abode in Astaroth, and in Edrai,
5 di là dal fiume Giordano nella terra di Moab. Allora cominciò Moisè a ispianare la legge, e dire:
6 Lo Signore Iddio nostro parlò a noi in Oreb e disse: bastivi, che voi sete istati in questo monte.	6 l And you answered me: We have sinned against the Lord: we will go up and fight, as the Lord our God hath commanded. And when you went ready armed unto the mountain,
7 Ritornate, e venite al monte degli Amorrei e a tutti quanti i piani i quali gli sono presso, e anco ai monti e ai luoghi bassi che sono contro al mezzodì e appresso il lito del mare, terra de' Cananei e di Libano, insino a quello grande fiume Eufrate.	7 Beyond the Jordan in the land of Moab. And Moses began to expound the law, and to say:
8 Impercio che, così parlando, io ve la diedi, entratevi entro, e sì (l'abitate e) possedetela; sopra la quale terra Iddio giurò ai vostri padri, ciò furono Abraam, Isaac e Iacob, che egli ve la darebbe, e ancora a quegli che nascessero dopo voi.	8 The Lord our God spoke to us in Horeb, saying: You have stayed long enough in this mountain:
9 E allora io vi dissi in quello tempo:	9 Turn you, and come to the mountain of the Amorrhites, and to the other places that are next to it, the plains and the hills and the vales towards the south, and by the sea shore, the land of the Chanaanites, and of Libanus, as far as the great river Euphrates.
10 Io non posso solo governarvi (e guardarvi), imperciòche Iddio nostro Signore v'ha moltiplicati e fatto crescere, e siete oggi come le stelle del cielo cresciuti (e multiplicati).	10 Behold, said he, I have delivered it to you: go in and possess it, concerning which the Lord swore to your fathers Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, that he would give it to them, and to their seed after them.
11 Iddio, Signore de' vostri padri, ancora ci aggiunga numero (e quantitade) di molte migliaia; e sì vi dia la sua benedizione, come egli disse.	11 And I said to you at that time:
12 Io non posso, solo, i vostri fatti (fare nè) so stenere, e ancora (la fatica,) il peso e le vostre bri ghe (e contenzioni).	12 I alone am not able to bear you: for the Lord your God hath multiplied you, and you are this day as the stars of heaven, for multitude.
13 Datemi de' vostri (uomini) savi ed esperti, i l'usanza (e i modi) de' quali sia provata (e accetta) nelle vostre tribù, acciò ch' io gli (faccia e) ponga principi sopra di voi.	13 (The Lord God of your fathers add to this number many thousands, and bless you as he hath spoken.)
14 Allora voi mi rispondeste, e diceste: buona cosa è questa che tu vogli fare.	14 I alone am not able to bear your business, and the charge of you and your differences.
15 E tolsi, di ciascuna tribù (e schiatta) vostra, uomini savi e nobili; e sì gli feci principi e capitani (sopra le tribù e le schiatte; e feci capitani) sopra cento e sopra cinquanta e sopra dieci, li quali v'insegnassero ogni cosa.	15 Let me have from among you wise and understanding men, and such whose conversation is approved among your tribes, that I may appoint them your rulers.
16 E sì comandai loro, e dissi: fate che voi udiate tutto il popolo, e giudicate, o sia cittadino o sia peregrino.	16 Then you answered me: The thing is good which thou meanest to do.
17 Non sarà alcuna persona più accetta che l'altra, o da lungi o da presso che sia; e così udirete il piccolo come il grande, nè non (guarderete nè) accetterete la persona di chiunque si sia, imperciò che il giudicio è di Dio; onde se alcuna cosa vi fosse difficile o paresse, riportatela a me, e io l'udirò (e giudicherò).	17 And I took out of your tribes men wise and honourable, and appointed them rulers, tribunes, and centurions, and officers over fifties, and over tens, who might teach you all things.
18 E si vi comandai ogni cosa che voi doveste fare.	18 And I commanded them, saying: Hear them, and judge that which is just: whether he be one of your country, or a stranger.
19 E partiti di Oreb, si passassimo per lo de serto terribile e grandissima solitudine (ciò che non s'abitava); la quale voi vedeste per la via del monte degli Amorrei, siccome avea comandato Iddio, no stro Signore. Ed essendo noi venuti in Cadesbarne,	19 There shall be no difference of persons, you shall hear the little as well as the great: neither shall you respect any man's person, because it is the judgment of God. And if any thing seem hard to you, refer it to me, and I will hear it.
20 (in quella contrada) io vi dissi: voi siete ve nuti al monte degli Amorrei, il quale Iddio nostro Signore vi dee dare.	20 And I commanded you all things that you were to do.
21 Ragguarda (, e poni mente,) la terra la quale Iddio tuo Signore ti darà: vavvi, e sì la possiedi siccome Iddio tuo Signore parlò ai tuoi padri; non avere paura, e non ti sbigottire in alcuna cosa.	21 And departing from Horeb, we passed through the terrible and vast wilderness, which you saw, by the way of the mountain of the Amorrhite, as the Lord our God had commanded us. And when we were come into Cadesbarne,
22 E voi veniste a me tutti quanti, e sì diceste: mandiamo certi uomini, i quali ragguardino e considerino la terra, è sì ci rapportino e (dicano), per quale via noi debbiamo andare, e a quali cittade.	22 I said to you: You are come to the mountain of the Amorrhite, which the Lord our God will give to us.
23 E piacendomi molto le parole, io sì mandai di voi duodeci uomini di ciascuna tribù (e schiatta).	23 See the land which the Lord thy God giveth thee: go up and possess it, as the Lord our God hath spoken to thy fathers: fear not, nor be any way discouraged.
24 I quali andandovi, e salendo in su li monti, vennero insino alla valle di Botro, e (riguardata e) considerata bene la terra,	24 And you came all to me, and said: Let us send men who may view the land, and bring us word what way we shall go up, and to what cities we shall go.
25 pigliando di quelli frutti, acciò che mostrassero loro la grassezza della terra, la quale Iddio nostro Signore ci darà.	25 And because the saying pleased me, I sent of you twelve men, one of every tribe:
26 E non volendo credere alle parole di Dio nostro Signore,	26 Who, when they had set forward and had gone up to the mountains, came as far as the valley of the cluster: and having viewed the land,
27 sì mormoraste nelle vostre abitazioni (e tra bacche e capanne, ove abitavate) e sì diceste: Iddio (ci vuole male e) hacci in odio, e perciò egli ci meno della terra d'Egitto, acciò che ci mettesse nelle mani degli Amorrei, e che ci disfacci (di sopra la terra).	27 Taking of the fruits thereof, to shew its fertility, they brought them to us, and said: The land is good, which the Lord our God will give us.
28 Ove anderemo noi? i messi (, che noi man diamo,) si ci hanno messo grande paura in cuore, dicendoci: la gente si è in grandissima moltitudine, e molto maggiori uomini del corpo loro, che non siamo noi. Le cittadi sono grandissime; e di mura (e di fortezze armate e) acconcie insino al cielo; e come aveano veduti i figliuoli della schiatta de' gi ganti.	28 And you would not go up, but being incredulous to the word of the Lord our God,
29 E io sì vi dissi: non abbiate paura di loro,	29 You murmured in your tents, and said: The Lord hateth us, and therefore he hath brought us out of the land of Egypt, that he might deliver us into the hand of the Amorrhite, and destroy us.
30 perciò che Iddio nostro Signore, il quale è nostra guida, combatterà per noi, siccome egli fece in Egitto, come vide ogni gente,	30 Whither shall we go up? the messengers have terrified our hearts, saying: The multitude is very great, and taller than we: the cities are great, and walled up td the sky, we have seen the sons of the Enacims there.
31 e voi medesimi il vedeste. Nel deserto Iddio Signore tuo, egli ti portoe (e menoe e guidoe); come l'uomo suole portare il suo figliuolo piccolo, così ti meno per tutta la via per la quale tu andasti, insino a tanto che voi foste venuti in questo luogo.	31 And I said to you: Fear not, neither be ye afraid of them:
32 E certo, con tutto questo, non credeste a Dio vostro Signore;	32 The Lord God, who is your leader, himself will fight for you, as he did in Egypt in the sight of all.
33 il quale v’andò innanzi nella via, e misurò (e prese) il luogo dove dovevate porre le vostre tra bacche (e il vostro campo); mostrandovi la via di notte (come doveste andare) per lume di fuoco; il quale diede, per il dì, una colonna di nuvola.	33 And in the wilderness (as thou hast seen) the Lord thy God hath carried thee, as a man is wont to carry his little son, all the way that you have come, until you came to this place.
34 E udendo Dio la voce delle parole vostre, (turbato e) adirato con voi, sì giurò e disse:	34 And yet for all this you did not believe the Lord your God,
35 Non vederà alcuno degli uomini di questa generazione pessima la buona terra, la quale con giuramento io promisi di dare alli vostri padri,	35 Who went before you in the way, and marked out the place, wherein you should pitch your tents, in the night shewing you the way by fire, and in the day by the pillar of a cloud.
36 se non Caleb figliuolo di Iefone; imperciò ch' egli la vedrà, e a lui darò la terra ch' egli calcoe (e per la quale andoe), e anche alli suoi figliuoli; imperciò ch' egli seguitoe Iddio Signore.	36 And when the Lord had heard the voice of your words, he was angry and swore, and said:
37 E non fue miranda la indignazione nel popolo; conciosia cosa che Iddio si (turboe e) adiroe ancora contro di me per voi, e dissemi: nè tu ancora entrerai in quella;	37 Not one of the men of this wicked generation shall see the good land, which I promised with an oath to your fathers:
38 ma Iosuè figliuolo di Nun, il quale è tuo servidore, egli v'entrerà per te: e costui fa che tu conforti e fortifichi, ed egli dividerà la terra per sorte alli figliuoli d'Israel.	38 Except Caleb the son of Jephone: for he shall see it, and to him I will give the land that he hath trodden upon, and to his children, because he hath followed the Lord.
39 I vostri figliuoli piccoli, de' quali voi (par laste, e) diceste ch' egli sarebbono presi e menati in pregione, e quegli figliuoli i quali non cognoscono il male dal bene, loro v'entreranno; e a loro darò la terra, (e abiterannola) e possederannola.	39 Neither is his indignation against the people to be wondered at, since the Lord was angry with me also on your account, and said: Neither shalt thou go in thither.
40 Voi altri tornate, e andate nella solitudine per la via del mare rosso.	40 But Josue the son of Nun, thy minister, he shall go in for thee: exhort and encourage him, and he shall divide the land by lot to Israel.
41 E allora mi rispondeste, e diceste: noi abbiamo peccato commesso contro Iddio; noi si andereino e combatteremo, come Iddio hae comandato, il quale è nostro Signore. E allora apparecchiati e armati, andando in sul monte,	41 Your children, of whom you said that they should be led away captives, and your sons who know not this day the difference of good and evil, they shall go in: and to them I will give the land, and they shall possess it.
42 Iddio sì mi parlò, e disse: di ’ a loro: non salite in sul monte e non combattete, perciò ch' io non sono con voi, acciò che non (fuggiate e) caggiate innanzi alla faccia de' vostri nemici.	42 But return you and go into the wilderness by the way of the Red Sea.
43 Io vi parlai, e non mi voleste udire (nè credere); ma contraddicendo al comandamento di Dio, e levandovi in superbia, saliste in sul monte.	43 dummy verses inserted by amos
44 Allora uscie fuori la gente d'Amorreo, la quale abitava in su li monti, e vi venne incontro, e sì vi (sconfisse e) perseguitò, come si sogliono (cacciare e) perseguitare le api; e foste (perseguitati e) morti da Seir insino ad Orma.	44 The Lord said to me: Say to them: Go not up, and fight not, for I am not with you: lest you fall before your enemies.
45 E tornati piagnendo voi dinanzi a Dio, non vi volse udire; nè alla vostra voce e parole si vuole inclinare.	45 I spoke, and you hearkened not: but resisting the commandment of the Lord, and swelling with pride, you went up into the mountain.
46 Voi sedeste (e isteste) molto tempo in Cadesbarne.	46 And the Amorrhite that dwelt in the mountains coming out, and meeting you, chased you, as bees do: and made slaughter of you from Seir as far as Horma.
	47 And when you returned and wept before the Lord, he heard you not, neither would he yield to ;your voice.
