1 In quelli giorni venne Ioanne Battista, predicante nel deserto di Iudea,	1 Now in those days, John the Baptist arrived, preaching in the desert of Judea,
2 e dicente: fate penitenza; imperò che s' appresserà il regno de' cieli.	2 and saying: “Repent. For the kingdom of heaven has drawn near.”
3 Certo egli è quello, del qual è detto per Isaia profeta, dicendo: io son voce gridante nel deserto; apparecchiate la via del Signore; fate diritte le sue strade.	3 For this is the one who was spoken of through the prophet Isaiah, saying: “A voice crying out in the desert: Prepare the way of the Lord. Make straight his paths.”
4 E lui, Ioanne, aveva il vestimento di pelle di cammello, e intorno alli suoi fianchi avea uno cintolo di pelliccia; e il suo cibo erano locuste e il miele salvatico ( ch' esce del tronco delli arbori).	4 Now the same John had a garment made from the hair of camels, and a leather belt around his waist. And his food was locusts and wild honey.
5 Allora a lui usciva tutti quelli di Ierusalem, e di Iudea, e d' ogni regione circa Iordane.	5 Then Jerusalem, and all Judea, and the entire region around the Jordan went out to him.
6 E battezzavansi da lui nel Iordane, confessando li suoi peccati.	6 And they were baptized by him in the Jordan, acknowledging their sins.
7 Ed egli vedendo molti de' Farisei e Sadducei, che venivano al suo battismo, disse a loro: generazione di (serpenti chiamati) vipere, cui vi mostrò a fuggire della futura ira?	7 Then, seeing many of the Pharisees and Sadducees arriving for his baptism, he said to them: “Progeny of vipers, who warned to you to flee from the approaching wrath?
8 Fate adunque il frutto degno di penitenza.	8 Therefore, produce fruit worthy of repentance.
9 E intra voi non vogliate dire: noi abbiamo il padre Abraam; serto io vi dico, come Dio egli è possente suscitare li figliuoli di Abraam di queste pietre.	9 And do not choose to say within yourselves, ‘We have Abraham as our father.’ For I tell you that God has the power to raise up sons to Abraham from these stones.
10 Già egli è posta l'accetta alla radice delli arbori; ogni adunque arbore, che non dà frutto buono, sarà tagliato e posto nel fuoco.	10 For even now the axe has been placed at the root of the trees. Therefore, every tree that does not produce good fruit shall be cut down and cast into the fire.
11 Certo io vi battezzo in acqua in penitenza; ma colui che è per venire dopo me, egli è più forte di me, li calzamenti del quale non son degno di portare; egli vi battezzerà nel Spirito [santo] e nel fuoco.	11 Indeed, I baptize you with water for repentance, but he who will come after me is more powerful than me. I am not worthy to carry his shoes. He will baptize you with the fire of the Holy Spirit.
12 Il cui ventilabro è nella sua mano, e mondarà la sua aia, e raunarà il frumento nel suo granaro; ma egli bruciarà le paglie col fuoco che non si potrà estinguere.	12 His winnowing fan is in his hand. And he will thoroughly cleanse his threshing floor. And he will gather his wheat into the barn. But the chaff he will burn with unquenchable fire.”
13 Allora venne Iesù da Galilea a Ioanne nel Iordane, acciò fosse battezzato da lui.	13 Then Jesus came from Galilee, to John at the Jordan, in order to be baptized by him.
14 Ma Ioanne il vietava, dicendo: io da te debbo essere battezzato, e tu a me vieni?	14 But John refused him, saying, “I ought to be baptized by you, and yet you come to me?”
15 Ma rispondendo, Iesù li disse: lascia al presente; imperò che a tal modo ci bisogna adempire ogni giustizia. Allora lasciollo fare.	15 And responding, Jesus said to him: “Permit this for now. For in this way it is fitting for us to fulfill all justice.” Then he allowed him.
16 E battezzato Iesù incontinente salì fuori dell' acqua, ed ecco che si apersero li cieli; ed egli vide il Spirito di Dio, discendente a modo di colomba, e venente sopra di sè.	16 And Jesus, having been baptized, ascended from the water immediately, and behold, the heavens were opened to him. And he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove, and alighting on him.
17 Ed ecco la voce del cielo, dicente: questo è il figliuolo mio diletto, nel quale mi son compiaciuto.	17 And behold, there was a voice from heaven, saying: “This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.”
