1 Parlo Iddio a Moisè e dissegli:	1 Yahweh spoke to Moses and said,
2 Vendica in prima lo popolo d'Israel de' Madianiti; e poi sarai ricolto al popolo tuo (cioè morrai e anderai al Limbo con gli altri).	2 'Exact the ful vengeance for the Israelites on the Midianites. Afterwards you will be gathered to yourpeople.'
3 Incontanente andd Moisè, (e parlò al popolo), e disse: armate li uomini da combattere, i quali possano fare la vendetta del Signore de' Madianiti.	3 Moses said to the people, 'Some of you are to take up arms for Yahweh's campaign against Midian,to carry out the vengeance of Yahweh on Midian.
4 Armate d'ogni tribù mille uomini, i quali siano mandati alla battaglia.	4 You will put a thousand men in the field from each of the tribes of Israel.'
5 E diedero mille uomini di ciascheduna tribù, sì che furono in tutto duodeci milia da combattere.	5 In this way Israel's thousands provided twelve thousand men equipped for war, one thousand fromeach tribe:
6 E diede loro per capitano Finees figliuolo di Eleazaro sacerdote: e li vasi santi e le trombe da sonar diede loro.	6 Moses put them in the field, one thousand from each tribe, with Phinehas, son of the priest Eleazar,to go with them carrying the sacred objects and the trumpets for the battle cry.
7 E quando ebbero combattuto coi Madianiti e vinto, uccisero tutti i maschii,	7 They made war on Midian, as Yahweh had ordered Moses, and put every male to death.
8 e li re loro, questi: Evi e Recem e Sur e Ur e Rebe, cinque principi della gente loro. E Balaam, figliuolo di Beor, uccisero con coltello.	8 What is more, they kil ed the kings of Midian, Evi, Rekem, Zur, Hur and Reba, the five Midianite kings;they also put Balaam son of Beor to the sword.
9 E le loro donne, e i fanciulli piccoli, e tutte le pecore e tutta la masserizia, e ciò che poteano avere, tolsero.	9 The Israelites took the Midianite women and their little ones captive and carried off al their cattle, altheir flocks and al their goods as booty.
10 Le città e le castella e le ville (e ogni cosa) misero al fuoco.	10 They set fire to the towns where they lived and to al their encampments.
11 E tolsero tutta la preda d'uomini e di bestie; e ciò ch' egli aveano tolto	11 Then, taking al their booty, everything they had captured, human and animal,
12 recaronlo a Moisè e ad Eleazaro sacerdote e a tutta la moltitudine del popolo d'Israel; tutte le altre massarizie da usare le portarono alle abitazioni nel campestro di Moab, presso al Giordano, da lato a Gerico.	12 they brought the captives, spoil and booty to Moses, the priest Eleazar and the whole community ofIsraelites at the camp on the Plains of Moab, near the Jordan by Jericho.
13 Uscirono fuori Moisè ed Eleazaro sacerdote e tutti i principi della Sinagoga, e feceronsi incontro di fuori delle loro abitazioni.	13 Moses, the priest Eleazar and al the leaders of the community went out of the camp to meet them.
14 E adirossi Moisè contro i principi dell' oste e contro i tribuni e contro i centurioni, i quali erano venuti dalla battaglia.	14 Moses was enraged with the officers of the army, the commanders of the thousands andcommanders of the hundreds, who had come back from this military expedition.
15 E disse a loro: perchè avete voi reservate lo femine?	15 He said, 'Why have you spared the life of al the women?
16 Non sono costoro quelle che ingannarono i figliuoli d'Israel per lo incitamento di Balaam, e fecervi prevaricare il comandamento di Dio per lo peccato di Fogor, per la qual cosa il popolo ne fu percosso?	16 They were the very ones who, on Balaam's advice, caused the Israelites to be unfaithful to Yahwehin the affair at Peor: hence the plague which struck Yahweh's community.
17 Ed imperciò tutti li maschi uccidete, e grandi e piccoli; e le femine, le quali hanno cognosciuto uomo, scannatele.	17 So kil al the male children and kil al the women who have ever slept with a man;
18 E non vi reservate se non le fanciulle vergini.	18 but spare the lives of the young girls who have never slept with a man, and keep them foryourselves.
19 E istarete fuori delle abitazioni sette die. E chi ucciderà uomo (vivo), o morto lo toccherà, lo terzo dì e settimo si purgherà (cioè coll'acqua santa).	19 As for you, bivouac outside the camp for seven days, everyone who has kil ed anyone or touched acorpse. Purify yourselves and your prisoners on the third and seventh days,
20 D'ogni preda, o di vestimento o di vaso o di massarizia, preparato di pelli di capra e peli e di legni, sarà purgato.	20 and purify al clothing, everything made of skin, everything woven of goat's hair and everythingmade of wood.'
21 Ed Eleazaro sacerdote, agli uomini dello esercito i quali aveano combattuto, così parlò loro: questo si è il comandamento della legge, che diede Iddio a Moisè:	21 The priest Eleazar said to the soldiers who had come back from the campaign, 'This is an article ofthe Law which Yahweh prescribed to Moses:
22 Oro, ariento, metallo, ferro, istagno o piombo,	22 although gold, silver, bronze, iron, tin and lead,
23 e ciò che per fiamma poe passare, col fuoco si purgherà; e tutto quello che il fuoco non potrà sostenere, sarà santificato con l'acqua della purgazione.	23 everything that can withstand fire can be cleaned by being passed through fire, it must stil bepurified with water for purification. Whatever cannot resist fire you must pass through water.
24 E voi laverete le vostre vestimenta lo settimo dì, e poi che saranno purificate, entrerete nelle abitazioni vostre.	24 'Wash your clothes on the seventh day and you wil then be clean. You may then re-enter the camp.'
25 Disse Iddio a Moisè:	25 Yahweh spoke to Moses and said:
26 Tuogli la somma di coloro che sono presi, e degli uomini e delle bestie, tu ed Eleazaro sacerdote e li principi delle tribù.	26 'With the priest Eleazar and the heads of families in the community, take a count of the spoils andcaptives, human and animal.
27 E divideteli egualmente fra coloro che andarono a combattere, e fra tutta la moltitudine.	27 You wil then share out the spoil, half and half, between those who fought the campaign and the restof the community.
28 E la parte di Dio separerai da quelli che pugnarono e furono nella battaglia, una anima di cinquecento, così degli uomini, come buoi e asini e pecore.	28 From the share of the combatants who took part in the campaign, you wil set aside one out of everyfive hundred persons, oxen, donkeys and sheep as Yahweh's portion.
29 E darai quella ad Eleazaro, perchè è la primizia di Dio.	29 You wil take this from the half share coming to them and give it to the priest Eleazar as the portionset aside for Yahweh.
30 E della metà della parte de' figliuoli d'Israel piglierai la quinquagesima parte, così di uomini, come di buoi, asini e pecore, e di tutti gli animali; e dalla a' Levitici, perciò che istanno a guardare il tabernacolo di Dio.	30 From the half coming to the Israelites, you will take one out of every fifty persons, oxen, donkeys,sheep, and al other animals, and give them to the Levites who are responsible for Yahweh's Dwel ing.'
31 E fecero Moisè ed Eleazaro secondo che Iddio comandò.	31 Moses and the priest Eleazar did as Yahweh had ordered Moses.
32 Fue la preda di pecore, che l'oste avea presa, seicento settantacinque milia,	32 The spoils, the remainder of the booty captured by the soldiers, came to six hundred and seventy-five thousand sheep and goats,
33 e buoi settantaduo milia,	33 seventy-two thousand head of cattle,
34 e gli asini sessanta milia e mille.	34 sixty-one thousand donkeys,
35 Femine, che non cognobbero uomo, furono trentadue milia.	35 and in persons, women who had never slept with a man, thirty-two thousand in al .
36 A coloro che andarono alla battaglia fu data la metà delle pecore, trecento trentasette miglia e cinquecento.	36 Half was assigned to those who had taken part in the war, namely three hundred and thirty-seventhousand five hundred sheep and goats,

40 E di sedici mille anime d'uomini vennero al Signore Iddio trentadue anime.	40 and sixteen thousand persons, of which Yahweh's portion was thirty-two.
41 Diede Moisè la decima di Dio ad Eleazaro sacerdote, come Iddio gli avea comandato,	41 Moses gave the priest Eleazar the portion set aside for Yahweh, as Yahweh had ordered Moses.
42 della mezza parte che gli era toccata a' figliuoli d'Israel, perciò ch' era separata per coloro i quali andarono alla battaglia.	42 As for the half coming to the Israelites which Moses had separated from that of the combatants,
43 Dell'altra mezza parte, ch' era toccata all'altra moltitudine, cioè delle pecore che furono trentasette milia cinquecento,	43 this half, the community's share, came to three hundred and thirty-seven thousand five hundredsheep and goats,
44 e de' buoi trentasei milia,	44 thirty-six thousand head of cattle,
45 e di asini trenta miglia cinquecento,	45 thirty thousand five hundred donkeys
46 e di uomini sedeci miglia,	46 and sixteen thousand persons.
47 tolse Moisè d'ogni cinquanta l'uno; e diedelo ai Leviti i quali erano stati in guardia del tabernacolo, siccome Iddio gli avea comandato.	47 From this half, the Israelites' share, Moses took one out of every fifty, human and animal, and gavethem to the Levites who were responsible for Yahweh's Dwel ing, as Yahweh had ordered Moses.
48 Quando s'approssimarono i principi, i tribuni e i centurioni a Moise, sì gli dissero:	48 The officers of the thousands who had fought the campaign, the commanders of the thousands andcommanders of the hundreds, came to Moses
49 Noi, servi tuoi, abbiamo annumerato il numero di coloro i quali andarono a combattere, e non abbiamo trovato niuno meno.	49 and said, 'Your servants have numbered the soldiers under their command: none of our men ismissing.
50 E però noi vogliamo offerire in dono a Dio tutti i denari e oro (e ariento) e pietre preziose e gli ornamenti delle gambe, perle e anella e le cade nelle, acciò che tu preghi Iddio per noi.	50 So, as an offering for Yahweh, we have brought what each of us has found in the way of goldornaments, armlets and bracelets, rings, earrings and breastplates, to make expiation for ourselves beforeYahweh.'
51 Tolsero Moisè ed Eleazaro l'oro (e ariento) di diverse fatte;	51 Moses and the priest Eleazar accepted this gold from them, al this jewel ery.
52 e pesò (al peso del santuario) sedici milia settecento cinquanta sicli; e questo ebbe dai centurioni e dai tribuni.	52 This portion of gold given to Yahweh by the commanders of the thousands and commanders of thehundreds amounted to sixteen thousand seven hundred and fifty shekels.
53 Gli altri, ciò che presero dalla battaglia, si era loro proprio.	53 Each of the soldiers took his own booty.
54 E poi (Eleazaro e Moisè) ebbero questo oro, e si' l puosero nel tabernacolo, perchè fosse memoria de' figliuoli d'Israel in sempiterno.	54 But Moses and the priest Eleazar, having accepted the gold from the commanders of the thousandsand commanders of the hundreds, brought it into the Tent of Meeting, to be a reminder of the Israelites beforeYahweh.
