1 Allora si partì Giovanni di Gazara, e disse a Simone suo padre ciò che Cendebeo aveva fatto nel popolo loro.	1 Then came up John from Gazera, and told Simon his father what Cendebeus had done.
2 E allora chiamò a sè Simone due suoi figliuoli più attempati, cioè Giuda e Giovanni, e disse loro: io (sono attempato, sì che tu Giuda e tu Giovanni voglio che sappiate, che io) e gli miei fratelli, e quegli della casa del mio padre, abbiamo combattuto contro gli nimici del popolo d'Israel, dalla nostra gioventudine infino al dì d'oggi; e conceduto fu nelle nostre mani di liberare il nostro popolo (de' suoi nimici) alquante volte.	2 Wherefore Simon called his two eldest sons, Judas and John, and said unto them, I, and my brethren, and my father's house, have ever from my youth unto this day fought against the enemies of Israel; and things have prospered so well in our hands, that we have delivered Israel oftentimes.
3 Ma ora io sono invecchiato; e però siate in mio luogo e degli miei frategli, e uscite fuori e combattete per la nostra gente; l'aiuto dello Iddio del cielo sia con voi.	3 But now I am old, and ye, by God's mercy, are of a sufficient age: be ye instead of me and my brother, and go and fight for our nation, and the help from heaven be with you.
4 Donde loro elessono del paese XX milia uomini combattitori, e cavalieri; e sì andarono incontro a Cendebeo, e dormirono in Modin.	4 So he chose out of the country twenty thousand men of war with horsemen, who went out against Cendebeus, and rested that night at Modin.
5 E la mattina si levarono, e andarono al campo; ed ecco Cendebeo che venne loro incontro con grande oste di pedoni e con cavalieri; ed era un piccolo fiume in mezzo di loro.	5 And when as they rose in the morning, and went into the plain, behold, a mighty great host both of footmen and horsemen came against them: howbeit there was a water brook betwixt them.
6 Allora mosse il campo [con] il suo popolo contro alla faccia de' nimici; e veggendo che il popolo temeva di passare il fiume, allora passò egli in prima di tutti; e quando loro il vidono passato, si passarono dopo lui.	6 So he and his people pitched over against them: and when he saw that the people were afraid to go over the water brook, he went first over himself, and then the men seeing him passed through after him.
7 Ed egli divise il popolo (per ischiere), e mise li cavalieri in mezzo de' pedoni; e certo la cavalleria de' nemici era molto abbondante.	7 That done, he divided his men, and set the horsemen in the midst of the footmen: for the enemies' horsemen were very many.
8 Donde i Giudei sonarono colle sante trombe; e Cendebeo e la sua gente incominciò a fuggire; e molti di loro caddono (morti, e altri) feriti; e gli altri fuggirono nella fortezza.	8 Then sounded they with the holy trumpets: whereupon Cendebeus and his host were put to flight, so that many of them were slain, and the remnant gat them to the strong hold.
9 Allora fu ferito Giuda, fratello di Giovanni; ma Giovanni incalzò gli nimici infino a Cedrone, la quale avea edificata (Cendebeo).	9 At that time was Judas John's brother wounded; but John still followed after them, until he came to Cedron, which Cendebeus had built.
10 E fuggironsi (anche di loro) infino alle torri ch' erano negli campi d' Azoto, e misele a fuoco. E furono morti di loro due milia uomini; e ritornàronsene in Giudea con pace.	10 So they fled even unto the towers in the fields of Azotus; wherefore he burned it with fire: so that there were slain of them about two thousand men. Afterward he returned into the land of Judea in peace.
11 (In quella stagione) Tolomeo, figliuolo di Abobo, era posto duce nel campo di Ierico, e avea molto ariento e oro.	11 Moreover in the plain of Jericho was Ptolemeus the son of Abubus made captain, and he had abundance of silver and gold:
12 Imperciò ch' egli era genero del sommo sacerdote.	12 For he was the high priest's son in law.
13 Onde il suo animo si levò in alto, e voleva occupare lo paese, e pensava fellonia incontro a Simone e incontro alli suoi figliuoli, per uccidergli.	13 Wherefore his heart being lifted up, he thought to get the country to himself, and thereupon consulted deceitfully against Simon and his sons to destroy them.
14 Ma Simone ricercava le cittadi del paese di Giudea, abbiendo cura (e sollecitudine) d'esse; e avea menati Matatia e Giuda suoi figliuoli [in Ierico], nel CLXXVII anno (del regno de' Greci), nel mese XI, cioè di febrario.	14 Now Simon was visiting the cities that were in the country, and taking care for the good ordering of them; at which time he came down himself to Jericho with his sons, Mattathias and Judas, in the hundred threescore and seventeenth year, in the eleventh month, called Sabat:
15 Il figliuolo di Abobo (cioè Tolomeo) ricevette Simone e li suoi figliuoli sopra detti in una sua piccola fortezza, la quale si chiamava Doc, la quale egli avea edificata; e ricevettegli sotto (grande fellonia e) tradimento; imperò ch' egli (fece loro grande tradigione, chè egli) gli convitò a mangiare, e qui nascose alquante persone.	15 Where the son of Abubus receiving them deceitfully into a little hold, called Docus, which he had built, made them a great banquet: howbeit he had hid men there.
16 E quando Simone e gli suoi figliuoli ebbono mangiato, sì si levò suso Tolomeo e gli (agguati) suoi, e presono le armi, ed entrarono nel convito, e presono lui e due suoi figliuoli, e sì gli fece mettere a morte.	16 So when Simon and his sons had drunk largely, Ptolemee and his men rose up, and took their weapons, and came upon Simon into the banqueting place, and slew him, and his two sons, and certain of his servants.
17 E così fece grande inganno nel popolo d' Israel, e rendè male per bene.	17 In which doing he committed a great treachery, and recompensed evil for good.
18 E Tolomeo scrisse queste cose, e significolle allo re, acciò che gli mandasse l'oste in aiuto, ed egli gli darebbe il paese e le cittadi loro e gli tributi.	18 Then Ptolemee wrote these things, and sent to the king, that he should send him an host to aid him, and he would deliver him the country and cities.
19 E poi mandò altri uomini in Gazara acciò che uccidessono Giovanni; e mandò dicendo per lettere a' tribuni, che venissono a lui, ed egli darebbe loro ariento e oro e (molti) doni.	19 He sent others also to Gazera to kill John: and unto the tribunes he sent letters to come unto him, that he might give them silver, and gold, and rewards.
20 E altri ne mandò a pigliare Ierusalem, e il monte del tempio.	20 And others he sent to take Jerusalem, and the mountain of the temple.
21 Ma alcuno uomo, correndo innanzi, disse a Giovanni ch' era in Gazara, come il suo padre era istato morto, e ancora li su?i due fratelli, e che Tolomeo mandava ancora a uccidere lui.	21 Now one had run afore to Gazera and told John that his father and brethren were slain, and, quoth he, Ptolemee hath sent to slay thee also.
22 E quando egli lo intese, fortemente sbigottìe; ma egli pure prese quegli uomini venuti a ucciderlo, e fece uccidere loro; però ch' egli sapeva bene che loro cercavano d'uccidere lui.	22 Hereof when he heard, he was sore astonished: so he laid hands on them that were come to destroy him, and slew them; for he knew that they sought to make him away.
23 Tutte l'altre cose de' parlamenti di Giovanni e delle battaglie e virtudi per le quali s'adoperò, e gli edificamenti delle mura le quali edificò, e altre cose de' suoi portamenti,	23 As concerning the rest of the acts of John, and his wars, and worthy deeds which he did, and the building of the walls which he made, and his doings,
24 (non sono qui scritte, ma) sono scritte nel libro de' giorni del suo sacerdozio, poi che fu fatto principe de' sacerdoti dopo il suo padre.	24 Behold, these are written in the chronicles of his priesthood, from the time he was made high priest after his father.
