1 E nelli CLX anni (del regno de' Greci) si levò suso Alessandro, figliuolo di Antioco, il quale fu chiamato Il nobile, e prese (la città di) Tolemaide; e riceveronlo (quelli della terra), e quivi regnava.	1 Now in the hundred and sixtieth year Alexander the son of Antiochus, surnamed the Illustrious, came up and took Ptolemais, and they received him, and he reigned there.
2 E quando lo re Demetrio il seppe, radunò grande oste, e vennegli incontro a battaglia.	2 And king Demetrius heard of it, and gathered together an exceeding great army, and went forth against him to fight.
3 E poi il detto Demetrio mandò lettera a Ionata con parole di pace, per magnificarlo,	3 And Demetrius sent a letter to Jonathan with peaceable words, to magnify him.
4 dicendo (egli colli suoi): facciamo con lui pace (e rechiamlo dalla nostra parte), inanzi ch' egli s'acconci (e appacifichi) con Alessandro, e sia contro a noi;	4 For he said: Let us first make a peace with him, before he make one with Alexander against us.
5 e ch' egli non si ricordi delle ingiurie, che inverso lui e in verso li suoi fratelli e sua gente fatto aviamo.	5 For he will remember all the evils that we have done against him, and against his brother, and against his nation.
6 E diedegli autorità di radunare gente (e grande oste), e di far fare armadure, e ch' egli fusse suo compagno; e comandò che gli fussono renduti gli ostaggi ch' erano nella rocca.	6 And he gave him authority to gather together an army, and to make arms, and that he should be his confederate: and the hostages that were in the castle, he commanded to be delivered to him.
7 Allora venne Ionata in Ierusalem, e lesse le lettere del re dinanzi a tutto il popolo, e dinanzi a tutti quegli ch' erano nella rocca.	7 And Jonathan came to Jerusalem, and read the letters in the hearing of all the people, and of them that were in the castle.
8 Ed ebbono grande paura, udendo la grande signoria che lo re gli avea data di radunare oste.	8 And they were struck with great fear, because they heard that the king had given him authority to gather together an army.
9 E renderono gli ostaggi, e Ionata gli donò agli loro padri e madri.	9 And the hostages were delivered to Jonathan, and he restored them to their parents.
10 E così abitò Ionata in Ierusalem, e cominciò a rinnovare e a riedificare Ierusalem.	10 And Jonathan dwelt in Jerusalem, and began to build, and to repair the city.
11 E comandò agli maestri, che facessono le mura intorno al monte di Sion di pietre quadrate a fortezza; e così fu fatto.	11 And he ordered workmen to build the walls, and mount Sion round about with square stones for fortification: and so they did.
12 E fuggironsi li forestieri, li quali v' erano dentro per le fortezze, le quali avea fatto (fare ed) edificare Bacchide.	12 And the strangers that were in the strong holds, which Bacchides had built, fled away.
13 E ciascuno lasciò il suo luogo, e andossene a casa.	13 And every man left his place, and departed into his own country:
14 E solamente in Betsura rimasono alquanti di quelli che aveano abbandonato la legge e li comandamenti di Dio; però che (solamente) questa fortezza era il loro rifugio.	14 Only in Bethsura there remained some of them, that had forsaken the law, and the commandments of God: for this was a place of refuge for them.
15 E quando lo re Alessandro ebbe intese le promissioni, le quali promise lo re Demetrio a Ionata, e furongli dette le grandi battaglie (che avea fatte Ionata) e le belle virtudi ch' egli avea adoperate, e anche li suoi fratelli, e le grandi fatiche che avea sostenute;	15 And king Alexander heard of the promises that Demetrius had made Jonathan: and they told him of the battles, and the worthy acts that he, and his brethren had done, and the labours that they had endured.
16 allora disse: or dove troveremo noi un cotale uomo? adunque facciamolo nostro amico compagno.	16 And he said: Shall we find such another man? now therefore we will make him our friend and our confederate.
17 E così gli scrisse una lettera, e mandogliela, la quale così conteneva, dicendo:	17 So he wrote a letter, and sent it to him according to these words, saying:
18 Lo re Alessandro al suo fratello Ionata salute.	18 King Alexander to his brother Jonathan, greeting.
19 Noi abbiamo inteso di te, che tu se' uomo potente e di grande forza; e piacciati che ti disponghi d' essere amico nostro.	19 We have heard of thee, that thou art a man of great power, and fit to be our friend:
20 E però sappi che noi oggi t' ordiniamo che tu sii sommo sacerdote della tua gente, e che tu sii amico dello re; e mandato ti ho lo panno di rosato, e la corona dell' oro, acciò che tu senti delle cose nostre, e conservi con noi l'amicizia.	20 Now therefore we make thee this day high priest of thy nation, and that thou be called the king's friend, (and he sent him a purple robe, and a crown of gold,) and that thou be of one mind with us in our affairs, and keep friendship with us.
21 E (allora) Ionata si vestì la santa stola nelli solenni dì di quella pasqua di scenofegia, nel settimo mese degli anni CLX (del regno de' Greci); e radunò l'oste, e fece moltitudine d' arme.	21 Then Jonathan put on the holy vestment in the seventh month, in the year one hundred and threescore, at the feast day of the tabernacles: and he gathered together an army, and made a great number of arms.
22 Onde molto s' attristò Demetrio, quando intese le parole di quello che lo re Alessandro avea fatto, dicendo:	22 And Demetrius heard these words, and was exceeding sorry, and said:
23 Che abbiamo noi fatto, che Alessandro ci hae avanzato in prendere l'amistà de' Giudei a sua fortezza?	23 What is this that we have done, that Alexander hath prevented us to gain the friendship of the Jews to strengthen himself?
24 Adunque io scriverò ancora loro parole di prieghi, e proferrò loro dignitadi e doni, acciò che siano meco in mio aiuto.	24 I also will write to them words of request, and offer dignities, and gifts: that they may be with me to aid me.
25 E scrisse loro (lo re Demetrio) a questo modo; lo re Demetrio) alla gente Giudea salute.	25 And he wrote to them in these words: King Demetrius to the nation of the Jews, greeting.
26 Noi sì aviamo inteso (e veduto) che voi ci avete osservati i patti (avuti con voi), e siete stati fermi nella nostra amistade, e non vi siete congiunti con li nostri nimici; onde molto ne siamo allegri.	26 Whereas you have kept covenant with us, and have continued in our friendship, and have not joined with our enemies, we have heard of it, and are glad.
27 E però piacciavi ancora (di perseverare e) di mantenere la fede, e renderemo a voi buone retribuzioni per quelle cose che fatto avete a noi.	27 Wherefore now continue still to keep fidelity towards us, and we will reward you with good things, for what you have done in our behalf.
28 E rimetteremo a voi molte prestanze, e daremovi donamenti.	28 And we will remit to you many charges, and will give you gifts.
29 Infino a ora io vi delibero, e con voi tutti i Giudei, de' tributi; e perdonovi i prezzi del sale, e lasciovi le corone (dell' oro) e la terza parte del seme.	29 And now I free you, and all the Jews from tributes, and I release you from the customs of salt, and remit the crowns, and the thirds of the seed:
30 E la metà del frutto dello legno, il quale mi toccava in parte, (e questo) vi lascio oggi e da quinci inanzi, sì che non si tolga dalla terra de' Giudei e dalle tre cittadi, che vi sono congiunte, di Samaria e di Galilea, da oggi inanzi e per tutto il futuro tempo.	30 And the half of the fruit of trees, which is my share, I leave to you from this day forward, so that it shall not be taken of the land of Juda, and of the three cities that are added thereto out of Samaria and Galilee, from this day forth and for ever:
31 E Ierusalem sia franca e santa con tutti li suoi confini; e a lei torni le sue decime e tributi, e sieno suoi.	31 And let Jerusalem be holy and free, with the borders thereof: and let the tenths, and tributes be for itself.
32 E ancora vi rilascio la signoria della ròcca di Ierusalem, e dolla al sommo sacerdote, ch' egli vi metta dentro quegli uomini che gli piaceranno, che la guardino.	32 I yield up also the power of the castle that is in Jerusalem, and I give it to the high priest, to place therein such men as he shall choose to keep it.
33 E (che) ogni Giudeo, il quale è in prigione della terra di Giuda in tutto il mio reame, io lo delibero in tutto e dono, sì che sieno liberi da' loro tributi, e ancora di quegli del bestiame loro.	33 And every soul of the Jews that hath been carried captive from the land of Juda in all my kingdom, I set at liberty freely, that all be discharged from tributes even of their cattle.
34 E tutti li dì solenni e gli sabbati e le nove lune e li decreti, e gli tre dì che sono inanzi allo di solenne, e tre dì poi, tutti sieno a franchigia, e di remissione a tutti li Giudei che sono nel mio reame.	34 And I will that all the feasts, and the sabbaths, and the new moons, and the days appointed, and three days before the solemn day, and three days after the solemn day, be all days of immunity and freedom, for all the Jews that are in my kingdom:
35 E alcuno non averae potenza di fare alcuna cosa, e di muovere di fatto incontro ad alcuno di loro in ciascuno piato.	35 And no man shall have power to do any thing against them, or to molest any of them, in any cause.
36 E (vogliamo che) siano scritti infino in XXX milia Giudei nell' oste del re, e sarà loro dato soldo e doni, sì come si conviene (come) a gente del re; e di loro si eleggeranno alquanti, acciò che sieno grandi, i quali guarderanno le fortezze del re.	36 And let there be enrolled in the king's army to the number of thirty thousand of the Jews: and allowance shall be made them as is due to all the king's forces, and certain of them shall be appointed to be in the fortresses of the great king:
37 E ancora di loro si eleggeranno certi i quali sieno sopra li fatti del re, i quali si debbiano fare in fede; e di loro sieno fatti principi, e viveranno secondo le loro leggi, sì come comandò il re nella terra di Giudea.	37 And some of them shall be set over the affairs of the kingdom, that are of trust, and let the governors be taken from among themselves, and let them walk in their own laws, as the king hath commanded in the land of Juda.
38 E le tre cittadi, le quali sono aggiunte alla (provincia di) Giudea del paese di Samaria, sieno riputate con Giudea; sì che siano pure sotto a uno signore, e non ubbidiscano se non la signoria del sommo sacerdote.	38 And the three cities that are added to Judea, out of the country of Samaria, let them be accounted with Judea: that they may be under one, and obey no other authority but that of the high priest:
39 Ancora Tolemaida, con tutti li suoi confini, i quali io diedi in dono a' santi che sono in Ierusalem, per le necessarie spese de' santi.	39 Ptolemais, and the confines thereof, I give as a free gift to the holy places, that are in Jerusalem, for the necessary charges of the holy things.
40 E ancora ciascuno anno io donerò XV milia sicli d'ariento delle ragioni del re, li quali mi toccano in parte,	40 And I give every year fifteen thousand sicles of silver out of the king's accounts, of what belongs to me:
41 e ancora tutto l' altro avanzo, il quale loro non renderono quegli ch' erano sopra i fatti regali negli anni passati di prima; e questi si daranno nell'opere della casa di Dio.	41 And all that is above, which they that were over the affairs the years before, had not paid, from this time they shall give it to the works of the house.
42 E sopra questo, XV milia sicli d'ariento, i quali ricevevano della ragione de' santi ciascuno anno; queste cose s' appartengano a' sacerdoti i quali usano al servigio di Dio.	42 Moreover the five thousand sicles of silver which they received from the account of the holy places, every year, shall also belong to the priests that execute the ministry.
43 E chiunque fuggirae nel tempio ch' è in Ierusalem, e tutti i suoi confini, pogniamo che siano colpevoli, ioro in ciascuno fatto siano liberati, e tutto quello che hanno nel regno mio sia suo liberamente.	43 And whosoever shall flee into the temple that is in Jerusalem, and in all the borders thereof, being indebted to the king for any matter, let them be set at liberty, and all that they have in my kingdom, let them have it free.
44 E ancora siano date le spese della ragione del re, per edificare e per fare l'opere de' santi,	44 For the building also, or repairing the works of the holy places, the charges shall be given out of the king's revenues:
45 e per rifare le mura di Ierusalem, e per fortificarle d'intorno, e per rifare le mura in Giudea.	45 For the building also of the walls of Jerusalem, and the fortifying thereof round about, the charges shall be given out of the king's account, as also for the building of the walls in Judea.
46 E avendo adunque Ionata e il popolo intese queste parole, non le credettono, e non ricevettono loro proferte; imperò che si ricordarono della grande malizia, che aveano operata nel popolo Giudeo, e com' egli gli aveano fortemente tormentati.	46 Now when Jonathan, and the people heard these words, they gave no credit to them nor received them: because they remembered the great evil that he had done in Israel, for he had afflicted them exceedingly.
47 E piacque loro di tenere con Alessandro, però che primo era istato porgitore di pace; e a lui da indi inanzi continuamente davano aiuto.	47 And their inclinations were towards Alexander, because he had been the chief promoter of peace in their regard, and him they always helped.
48 Allora lo re Alessandro radunoe grande gente, e menò sua oste contro a Demetrio.	48 And king Alexander gathered together a great army, and moved his camp near to Demetrius.
49 E combatterono insieme i due re; ma la gente dell' oste del re Demetrio si fuggì, e Alessandro tenne loro dietro, e sopragiunsegli nel cammino.	49 And the two kings joined battle, and the army of Demetrius fled away, and Alexander pursued after him, and pressed them close.
50 Allora la battaglia induroe infino che il sole tramontò; e in quel dì fu morto Demetrio, (e sconfitta la gente sua, e lo re Alessandro ebbe vittoria).	50 And the battle was hard fought till the sun went down: and Demetrius was slain that day.
51 Dond' egli mandò ambasciatori a Tolomeo, re d'Egitto, dicendo in questo modo:	51 And Alexander sent ambassadors to Ptolemee king of Egypt, with words to this effect, saying:
52 Conciosia cosa ch' io sia tornato nel mio reame, e sono seduto nella sedia del mio padre, e hoe racquistato il nostro paese, e hoe isconfitto e morto Demetrio;	52 Forasmuch as I am returned into my kingdom, and am set in the throne of my ancestors and have gotten the dominion, and have overthrown Demetrius, and possessed our country,
53 e combattemmo insieme la mia gente colla sua, e fue vinto, e fue fuori della sedia del suo reame;	53 And have joined battle with him, and both he and his army have been destroyed by us, and we are placed in the throne of his kingdom:
54 piacciati che facciamo insieme amistade; e dammi la tua figliuola per moglie, e io sarò tuo genero, e darotti doni e dignitadi.	54 Now therefore let us make friendship one with another: and give me now thy daughter to wife, and I will be thy son in law, and I will give both thee and her gifts worthy of thee.
55 E lo re Tolomeo rispuose in questa forma: beato fu quello giorno, che tu tornasti alla terra dei tuoi padri, e sedesti nella sedia del regno loro.	55 And king Ptolemee answered, saying: Happy is the day wherein thou didst return to the land of thy fathers, and sattest in the throne of their kingdom.
56 Ond' io farò quello che tu hai addomandato; ma vienmi incontro infino a Tolemaida, si che noi ci convegniamo insieme, e darotti moglie sì come tu hai detto.	56 And now I will do to thee as thou hast written: but meet me at Ptolemais, that we may see one another, and I may give her to thee as thou hast said.
57 Allora si partì d' Egitto lo re Tolomeo, e Cleopatra sua figliuola, e fu nel CLXII anno (del regno de' Greci), e venne a Tolemaida.	57 So Ptolemee went out of Egypt, with Cleopatra his daughter, and he came to Ptolemais in the hundred and sixty-second year.
58 E lo re Alessandro anco quivi venne; e fece le sue nozze, sì come fanno li re, con grande gloria.	58 And king Alexander met him, and he gave him his daughter Cleopatra: and he celebrated her marriage at Ptolemais, with great glory, after the manner of kings.
59 Allora lo re Alessandro scrisse a Ionata, che gli venisse incontro (a Tolemaida).	59 And king Alexander wrote to Jonathan, that he should come and meet him.
60 Ed egli v' andò (con grande gente e) con grande gloria, e scontrossi quivi cogli due re (coronati), e diede loro molto ariento e oro e altri doni; onde loro lo ricevettono graziosamente.	60 And he went honourably to Ptolemais, and he met there the two kings, and he gave them much silver, and gold, and presents: and he found favour in their sight.
61 E allora vi capitarono uomini rei e malvagi del popolo d' Israel, i quali (erano pieni di malizia` e d'odio, e) accusarono Ionata; ma lo re non gli volse intendere.	61 And some pestilent men of Israel, men of a wicked life, assembled themselves against him to accuse him: and the king gave no heed to them.
62 Anzi comandò che Ionata fosse ispogliato delle sue vestimenta, e fosse rivestito di rosato; e così fu fatto. E lo re il puose a sedere seco.	62 And he commanded that Jonathan's garments should be taken off, and that he should be clothed with purple: and they did so. And the king made him sit by himself.
63 E disse alli suoi principi, che andassono con lui per la terra, e fece bandire che alcuno non sia ardito d' accusarlo, nè di molestarlo d' alcuna cosa per alcuna cagione.	63 And he said to his princes: Go out with him into the midst of the city, and make proclamation, that no man complain against him of any matter, and that no man trouble him for any manner of cause.
64 E quando quegli che l' accusavano viddono magnificare la sua gloria, e viddono lui vestito di rosato, incontanente si fuggirono tutti.	64 So when his accusers saw his glory proclaimed, and him clothed with purple, they all fled away.
65 E in questo modo lo fece grande il re, e fecelo iscrivere fra gli primi suoi amici, e fecelo duca e partefice della signoria.	65 And the king magnified him, and enrolled him amongst his chief friends, and made him governor and partaker of his dominion.
66 E così tornò Ionata in Ierusalem con pace e con letizia.	66 And Jonathan returned into Jerusalem with peace and joy.
67 Nel centosessantacinquesimo anno (del regno de' Greci) Demetrio, figliuolo di Demetrio, venne da Creta nella terra del suo padre.	67 In the year one hundred and sixty-five Demetrius the son of Demetrius came from Crete into the land of his fathers.
68 E quando lo re Alessandro lo intese, si turboe molto, e tornoe ad Antiochia.	68 And king Alexander heard of it, and was much troubled, and returned to Antioch.
69 Ma Demetrio fece suo principe Apollonio, il quale signoreggiava (a' confini della Soria) in una parte dello reame la quale si chiamava Celesiria; il quale radunoe grande (gente e fece grande) oste, e venne a Iamnia; e mandò dicendo a Ionata sommo sacerdote:	69 And king Demetrius made Apollonius his general, who was governor of Celesyria: and he gathered together a great army, and came to Jamnia: and he sent to Jonathan the high priest,
70 Tu solo ti se' ribellato da noi, e sì ti fai beffe di me, e sì m' hai in obbrobrio; e veggiamo che tu ci contrarii per li monti (e per gli altri luoghi nelli quali tu se' signore).	70 Saying: Thou alone standest against us, and I am laughed at, and reproached, because thou shewest thy power against us in the mountains.
71 Ma se tu ti confidi nelle tue fortezze, iscendi a noi al piano campo, e proviamo quivi insieme; e allora vedrai come egli è meco la virtù delle battaglie.	71 Now therefore if thou trustest in thy forces, come down to us into the plain, and there let us try one another: for with me is the strength of war.
72 (E imperò) impara e addomanda chi son io, e gli altri che sono nel mio aiuto, i quali dicono che il vostro piede non si puote fermare dinanzi dalla nostra faccia; imperciò che due volte i tuoi padri si sono fuggiti (da loro) nella loro terra medesima.	72 Ask, and learn who I am, and the rest that help me, who also say that your foot cannot stand before our face, for thy fathers have twice been put to flight in their own land:
73 Ora adunque come credi tu potere sostenere tanta oste e tanta cavalleria nel campo ove non è pietra, nè sasso, nè luogo da fuggire?	73 And now how wilt thou be able to abide the horsemen, and so great an army in the plain, where there is no stone, nor rock, nor place to flee to?
74 E quando Ionata intese questi sermoni, incontamente fu mosso nell' animo suo, e disse che fossono apparecchiati XV milia uomini; e così elesse, e uscì fuori di Ierusalem, e Simone suo fratello gli' venne in aiuto.	74 Now when Jonathan heard the words of Apollonius, he was moved in his mind: and he chose ten thousand men, and went out of Jerusalem, and Simon his brother met him to help him.
75 E puosono il campo a Ioppen; il popolo cacciò Ionata dalla città, però che la guardia di Apollonio era in Ioppen; e combatteronla (e vinserla).	75 And they pitched their tents near Joppe, but they shut him out of the city: because a garrison of Apollonius was in Joppe, and he laid siege to it.
76 Ed essendo spaventati quelli ch' erano nella cittade, sì gli apersono le porte; e così acquistò Ionata Ioppen.	76 And they that were in the city being affrighted, opened the gates to him: so Jonathan took Joppe.
77 E quando Apollonio questo intese, si mosse con tre milia cavalieri e con grande oste.	77 And Apollonius heard of it, and he took three thousand horsemen, and a great army.
78 E andossene pianamente ad Azoto, e quivi pose il campo, imperò ch' egli avea grande quantità (di gente a piè e) di cavalieri, e confidavasi in loro. Ma Ionata gli andò dietro in Azoto, e quivi combatterono insieme.	78 And he went to Azotus as one that was making a journey, and immediately he went forth into the plain: because he had a great number of horsemen, and he trusted in them. And Jonathan followed after him to Azotus, and they joined battle.
79 E aveva lasciato Apollonio (di loro) mille cavalieri in campo per agguato.	79 And Apollonius left privately in the camp a thousand horsemen behind them.
80 E quando Ionata ebbe ispiato che agguato era posto dopo lui, attorniò il campo d' Apollonio; i quali saettarono al popolo di Ionata dalla mattina insino al vespero.	80 And Jonathan knew that there was an ambush behind him, and they surrounded his army, and cast darts at the people from morning till evening.
81 E il popolo stette per quel modo, sì come comandò Ionata; e li cavalieri delli nimici erano affaticati; e li loro cavalli stanchi.	81 But the people stood still, as Jonathan had commanded them: and so their horses were fatigued.
82 Di che Simone incalzò l'oste suo, e commise battaglia incontro alla legione; e li cavalieri erano affaticati, e furono da lui sconfitti, e fuggirono.	82 Then Simon drew forth his army, and attacked the legion: for the horsemen were wearied: and they were discomfited by him, and fled.
83 E gli altri ch' erano sparti per lo campo sì fuggirono in Azoto, ed entrarono nel tempio di Betdagon loro idolo, acciò che fossono salvi.	83 And they that were scattered about the plain, fled into Azotus, and went into Bethdagon their idol's temple, there to save themselves.
84 Ma Ionata arse Azoto, e le cittadi che v'erano dintorno, e prese le loro ricchezze; e arse il tempio di Betdagon, e quegli che quivi fuggirono dentro.	84 But Jonathan set fire to Azotus, and the cities that were around it, and took the spoils of them, and the temple of Dagon: and all them that were fled into it, he burnt with fire.
85 E furono, tra gli morti e arsi, quasi nel torno di VIII milia.	85 So they that were slain by the sword, with them that were burnt, were almost eight thousand men.
86 Poi si partì quindi Ionata con l'oste, e puose il campo ad Ascalona; ma loro gli vennono incontrol con grande gloria.	86 And Jonathan removed his army from thence, and camped against Ascalon: and they went out of the city to meet him with great honour.
87 E poi si (partì quindi, e) tornò Ionata con gli suoi in Ierusalem con molte ricchezze.	87 And Jonathan returned into Jerusalem with his people, having many spoils.
88 E quando lo re Alessandro udì queste cose, sì si puose in cuore di glorificare più Ionata.	88 And it came to pass: When Alexander the king heard these words, that he honoured Jonathan yet more.
89 E mandogli la fibbia dell' oro, sì come era usanza di dare a' consorti dello re. E donogli Accaron e tutti i suoi termini in possessione.	89 And he sent him a buckle of gold, as the custom is, to be given to such as are of the royal blood. And he gave him Accaron and all the borders thereof in possession.
