BIBBIA VOLGARE	NEW JERUSALEM
1 In quella notte non potendo lo re dormire, fecesi recare quello libro dov' erano scritti coloro che per lo tempo passato aveano servito lo re e la Corte d'alcuna cosa, e per che modo o come. E leggendo,	1 That night the king could not sleep; he called for the Record Book, or Annals, to be brought and read tohim.
2 venne in quello luogo dove era scritto, come Mardocheo manifestò il tradimento che voleano fare Bagatan e Tares, due eunuchi del re, ciò fu come voleano uccidere lo re.	2 They contained an account of how Mordecai had denounced Bigthan and Teresh, two of the king'seunuchs serving as Guards of the Threshold, who had plotted to assassinate King Ahasuerus.
3 E udendo lo re ricordare Mardocheo, sì domandò, che merito avea avuto costui dalla Corte di questo. Risposero i servi, e dissero: giammai di questo egli non fu meritato.	3 'And what honour and dignity', the king asked, 'was conferred on Mordecai for this?' 'Nothing has beendone for him,' the gentlemen-in-waiting replied.
4 E lo re domandò, che se alcuno consigliere vi fosse nella casa, che fosse chiamato. Aman era venuto molto per tempo alla Corte per volere dire al re, che gli concedesse grazia di fare impiccare Mardocheo sopra le forche ch' egli avea fatto fare.	4 The king then said, 'Who is outside in the antechamber?' Haman had, that very moment, entered theouter antechamber of the private apartments, to ask the king to have Mordecai hanged on the gal ows which hehad just put up for the purpose.
5 E risposero li servi suoi: Aman è nel cammino. Ed essendo chiamato,	5 So the king's gentlemen-in-waiting replied, 'It is Haman out in the antechamber.' 'Bring him in,' the kingsaid,
6 Aman andò allo re, e il re gli disse: dimmi Aman: che merito si vuole rendere a colui che sempre onora il re (e liberollo dalla morte)? Credendo Aman che lo re lo dicesse per lui,	6 and, as soon as Haman came in, went on to ask, 'What is the right way to treat a man whom the kingwishes to honour?' 'Whom', thought Haman, 'would the king wish to honour, if not me?'
7 diede questo consiglio: ogni uomo che onora tanto il re,	7 So he replied, 'If the king wishes to honour someone,
8 dee essere vestito di vestimenta regali, e posto sopra lo cavallo del re, e in capo la corona dell' oro.	8 royal robes should be brought from the king's wardrobe, and a horse from the king's stable, sporting aroyal diadem on its head.
9 E lo primo dopo lo re in tutto lo reame tenga lo suo cavallo, e sia menato per tutta la terra, dicendo: così sarà fatto a qualunque onora il re.	9 The robes and horse should be entrusted to one of the noblest of the king's officers-of-state, who shouldthen array the man whom the king wishes to honour and lead him on horseback through the city square,proclaiming before him: "This is the way a man shall be treated whom the king wishes to honour." '
10 E lo re gli comandò e disse: va tosto, e prendi la vestimenta e lo cavallo, e fa, come tu hae detto, a Mardocheo Giudeo, il quale siede alla porta del palazzo; e guarda che niuna cosa di quelle che tu hae dette, venga meno.	10 'Hurry,' the king said to Haman, 'take the robes and the horse, and do everything you have just said toMordecai the Jew, who works at the Chancel ery. On no account leave out anything that you have mentioned.'
11 E incontanente tolse Aman lo vestimento (la corona) e lo cavallo, e andò a Mardocheo; e nel mezzo della piazza lui lo vestio, e puoselo a cavallo, gridando per la terra: di questo onore è degno costui, e qualunque onora il re.	11 So taking the robes and the horse, Haman arrayed Mordecai and led him on horseback through thecity square, proclaiming before him: 'This is the way a man shal be treated whom the king wishes to honour.'
12 E tornossi Mardocheo alla porta del palagio; e Aman con grande fretta, piagnendo, col capo coperto tornò a casa.	12 After this Mordecai returned to the Chancel ery, while Haman went hurrying home in dejection andcovering his face.
13 E disse queste cose alla moglie Zares, e agli amici suoi. Allo quale li savii, li quali lui avea nel consiglio, e la sua moglie risposero, e dissero : se Mardocheo è del popolo Giudeo, innanzi al quale tu hai fatto riverenza, non potrai resistere; e nel suo cospetto va e fagli riverenza.	13 He told his wife Zeresh and al his friends what had just happened. His wife Zeresh and his friendssaid, 'You are beginning to fal , and Mordecai to rise; if he is Jewish, you will never get the better of him. Withhim against you, your fal is certain.'
14 Ed essendo [in] queste parole, giunsero gli eunuchi del re, e menaronlo al convito, il quale la regina avea fatto apparecchiare.	14 While they were still talking, the king's officers arrived in a hurry to escort Haman to the banquet thatEsther was giving.
