Judit 15

BIBBIA VOLGARE	NEW JERUSALEM
1 E avendo udito tutto lo esercito, che a Oloferne gli era mozzo il capo, perse l'animo il consiglio; e commossi dallo tremore e dalla paura, cominciorono a fuggire,	1 When the men who were stil in their tents heard the news they were appal ed.
2 per tal modo che non si trovava uomo che parlassene insieme; ma chinato il capo, abbandonando tutto, si sforzavano di fuggire dagli Ebrei, i quali aveano udito che li veniano dietro, fuggendo per le vie de' campi e per i sentieri de' colli.	2 Panic-stricken and trembling, no two of them could keep together, the rout was complete, with oneaccord they fled along every track across the plain or through the mountains.
3 E vedendo i figliuoli d' Israel, che loro fuggivano, seguitorono loro, descendendo, suonando le trombe e gridando ad alta voce dopo loro.	3 The men who had been bivouacking in the mountains round Bethulia were fleeing too. Then al theIsraelite warriors charged down on them.
4 E però che gli Assirii fuggivano non adunati insieme, cadevano fuggendo uno di qua e uno di là; e i figliuoli d' Israel, con una schiera perseguitandoli, affogavano tutti quelli che poteano pigliare.	4 Uzziah sent messengers to Betomasthaim, Bebai, Choba, Kola, throughout the whole territory of Israel,to inform them of what had happened and to urge them al to hurl themselves on the enemy and annihilate them.
5 E mandò Ozia nuncii per tutte le cittadi e regioni d' Israel.	5 As soon as the Israelites heard the news, they fel on them as one man and massacred them al theway to Choba. The men of Jerusalem and the entire mountain country also ral ied to them, once they had beeninformed of the events in the enemy camp. Then the men of Gilead and Galilee attacked them on the flank andstruck at them fiercely till they neared Damascus and its territory.
6 E ogni regione e ogni città mandò la sua gioventù eletta e armata dopo loro, e seguitarono loro colla spada, persino che venissero a' loro termini de' suoi confini.	6 Al the other inhabitants of Bethulia fel on the Assyrian camp and looted it to their great profit.
7 Lo residuo della gente, che era in Betulia, entrorono il campo degli Assirii; e la preda, che lasciorono gli Assirii fuggendo, sì la pigliorono, e caricoronsi molto forte.	7 The Israelites returning from the slaughter seized what was left. The hamlets and vil ages of themountain country and the plain also captured a great deal of booty, since there were vast stores of it.
8 Ma quelli che vittoriosi tornorono in Betulia, tutte le loro cose che trovorono sì le pigliorono seco, sì che non era numero nelle pecore e giumenti e nell' altre cose mobili loro, sì che dal minimo persino al grande tutti furono ricchi della preda loro.	8 Joakim the high priest and the entire Council of Elders of Israel, who were in Jerusalem, came to gazeon the benefits that the Lord had lavished on Israel and to see Judith and congratulate her.
9 Ioachin sommo sacerdote si partì di Ierusalem, e venne in Betulia con tutti li suoi sacerdoti, acciò che vedessero Iudit.	9 On coming to her house, they blessed her with one accord, saying: You are the glory of Jerusalem!You are the great pride of Israel! You are the highest honour of our race!
10 La qual venendo a lui, tutti con una voce la benedissero, dicendo: tu sei la gloria di Ierusalem, tu la letizia d' Israel, tu l'onore del popolo nostro.	10 By doing all this with your own hand you have deserved wel of Israel, and God has approved whatyou have done. May you be blessed by the Lord Almighty in al the days to come! And the people al said,'Amen!'
11 Però che tu hai fatto virilmente, e confortossi il cuor tuo; però che tu hai amato la castità, e dopo la morte del tuo marito, altro marito non volesti; però la mano del Signore ti confortoe, e però sarai tu benedetta in eterno.	11 The people looted the camp for thirty days. They gave Judith the tent of Holofernes, al his silver plate,his divans, his drinking bowls and all his furniture. She took this, loaded her mule, harnessed her carts andheaped the things into them.
12 E tutto il popolo disse: così sia, così sia.	12 Al the women of Israel, hurrying to see her, formed choirs of dancers in her honour. Judith tookwands of vine-leaves in her hand and distributed them to the women who accompanied her;
13 È (dopo la partita del campo degli Assirii) appena che per XXX dì osse ricolta la roba degli Assirii dal popolo d' Israel.	13 she and her companions put on wreaths of olive. Then she took her place at the head of theprocession and led the women as they danced. Al the men of Israel, armed and garlanded, followed them,singing hymns.
14 E tutte le cose, le quali fu conosciuto che fossero di Oloferne, tutte furono date a Iudit, in oro, ariento, vestimenta, pietre preziose e ogni massarizia (e altra cosa); e tutto le fu dato dal popolo.	14 With all Israel round her, Judith broke into this song of thanksgiving and the whole people sang thishymn:
15 E tutti i popoli si rellegravano con le donne e vergini e giovani, in organi e chitarre, (e facevano grande festa).
