1 E intervenne che morìo Naas re de' figliuoli di Ammon, e regnò il suo figliuolo per lui.	1 After this, when Nahash king of the Ammonites died and his son Hanun succeeded him,
2 E disse David; io farò misericordia con esso Anon figliuolo di Naas; però che il suo padre prestò a me grazia. E mandò David messaggi a consolarlo della morte del suo padre. I quali venuti nella terra de' figliuoli di Ammon per consolare Anon,	2 David thought, 'I shal show Hanun son of Nahash the same faithful love as his father showed me.'And David sent representatives to offer him condolences over his father. But when David's representativesreached Hanun in the Ammonites' country to present these condolences,
3 dissero i prìncipi de' figliuoli di Ammon ad Anon: tu forse credi che David abbia mandato a te, per cagione dello onore del padre tuo, per consolarti; e non t'accorgi come i servi suoi sono venuti, che ispiino e cerchino la tua terra.	3 the Ammonite leaders said to Hanun, 'Do you real y think David means to honour your father when hesends you messengers with sympathy? On the contrary, the reason why his representatives have come to you isto explore, overthrow and reconnoitre the country.'
4 Per la qual cosa Anon decalvò e rase i servi di David, e tagliò le loro vestimenta dai piedi insino alle natiche, e lasciolli.	4 Whereupon Hanun seized David's representatives, shaved them, cut their clothes off half-way up,right by their buttocks, and sent them away.
5 I quali andàtisene mandaronlo a dire a David; ed egli mandò incontro a loro; però che aveano ricevuta grande vergogna; e comandò loro, che istessero in Gerico tanto che crescesseno loro le barbe (e i loro capelli), e poscia tornassero.	5 As soon as David was told how the men had been treated, he sent someone to meet them, since themen were overcome with shame. 'Stay in Jericho,' the king said, 'until your beards have grown, and come backthen.'
6 E veggendo i figliuoli di Ammon, che aveano fatta ingiuria a David, così Anon come tutto il popolo mandò mille talenti d'ariento, per conducere di Mesopotamia, e di Siria Maaca, e di Soba, carra e cavalieri.	6 When the Ammonites realised that they had antagonised David, Hanun and the Ammonites sent athousand talents of silver to hire chariots and cavalry from the Aramaeans of Upper Mesopotamia, of Maacahand of Zobah.
7 E condussero XXXII milia di carra, e il re [di] Maaca col suo popolo. I quali venuti puosero il campo della parte di Medaba. E i figliuoli di Ammon raunati di loro città vennero alla battaglia.	7 They hired thirty-two thousand chariots and the king of Maacah with his people, who came andencamped before Medeba, while the Ammonites, having left their towns and mustered, were advancing to thewar.
8 La quale cosa udita, David mandò Ioab, e tutto lo esercito degli uomini fortissimi.	8 When David heard this, he sent Joab with the whole army, the champions.
9 E usciti i figliuoli di Ammon dirizzarono la schiera presso alla porta della città; e gli re, che erano venuti in suo aiuto, stettero nel campo partiti.	9 The Ammonites marched out and drew up their line of battle at the city gate, while the kings who hadcome kept their distance in the open country.
10 Onde Ioab, conoscendo che egli avea la battaglia contro a sè dinanzi e dietro, elesse uomini fortissimi di tutto Israel, e andonne contra il Siro.	10 Joab, seeing that he had to fight on two fronts, to his front and to his rear, chose the best of Israel'spicked men and drew them up in line facing the Aramaeans.
11 Tutto l'altro popolo diede in mano di Abisai suo fratello; e andossene contro i figliuoli di Ammon.	11 He entrusted the rest of the army to his brother Abishai, and drew them up in line facing theAmmonites.
12 E disse (Ioab): se il Siro mi vincerà, tu mi aiuterai; e se i figliuoli d' Ammon vincessero te, io aiuterò te.	12 'If the Aramaeans prove too strong for me,' he said, 'you must come to my help; if the Ammonitesprove too strong for you, I shal come to yours.
13 Confòrtati, e facciamo gagliardemente per lo popolo nostro, e per le cittadi del nostro Iddio: il Signore faccia quello che sia buono nel suo cospetto.	13 Be brave and let us fight valiantly, for the sake of our people and for the cities of our God! And letYahweh dispose as he thinks fit!'
14 E andonne Ioab, e quello popolo il quale era con esso lui, alla battaglia contro al Siro; e sì li cacciò.	14 Joab and the force with him joined battle with the Aramaeans, who fled at his onslaught.
15 E veggendo li figliuoli d'Ammon, che il Siro era fuggito, fuggirono egli ancora da Abisai suo fratello, ed entrarono nella città; e Ioab ritornò in Ierusalem.	15 When the Ammonites saw that the Aramaeans had fled, they too fled from his brother Abishai andwithdrew into the city. Joab then returned to Jerusalem.
16 E veggendo il Siro, ch' era caduto dinanzi ad Israel, mandò messaggi, e fece venire il Siro ch' era oltre il fiume; e Sofac, principe della milizia di Adarezer, era loro duca.	16 The Aramaeans, realising that Israel had got the better of them, sent messengers and mobilised theAramaeans living on the other side of the River, with Shophach, commander of Hadadezer's army, at their head.
17 La quale cosa essendo nunciata a David, congregò egli tutto Israel, e passò il Giordano; e diede loro addosso, e drizzò la battaglia, contra loro combattendo.	17 David, being informed of this, mustered al Israel, crossed the Jordan, made contact with them andtook up position near them. David drew up his line of battle facing the Aramaeans, who then engaged him.
18 E fuggì il Siro dinanzi ad Israel; e David uccise de' Siri settemilia carra, e quaranta milia de' pedoni, e Sofac principe dello esercito.	18 But the Aramaeans fled from Israel, and David killed seven thousand of their chariot teams and fortythousand men; and also Shophach, the commander of the army.
19 E vedendo i servi di Adarezer, che erano vinti da Israel, e' fuggirono a David, e servirono a lui; e da indi innanzi Siria non volse dare più aiuto ai figliuoli di Ammon.	19 When Hadadezer's vassals saw that Israel had got the better of them, they made peace with Davidand became his subjects. The Aramaeans were unwil ing to give any more help to the Ammonites.
