BIBBIA VOLGARE	NEW JERUSALEM
1 E venne in verità Dina, figliuola di Lia, per vedere le femine di quella regione.	1 Dinah, who was Jacob's daughter by Leah, went out to visit some of the women of that region.
2 La quale quando la vide Sichem, figliuolo di Emor Eveo, principe di quella terra, amolla e presela e dormi con lei; per forza costrinse la vergine.	2 Shechem son of Hamor the Hivite, headman of the region, saw her, seized her and forced her tosleep with him.
3 E conglutinata è l'anima sua con lei; ed essendo tristata, la lusingò.	3 He was captivated by Dinah daughter of Jacob; he fel in love with the girl and tried to win her heart.
4 E vegnendo ad Emor, suo padre, disse: dammi questa fanciulla per moglie.	4 Accordingly Shechem said to his father Hamor, 'Get me this girl; I want to marry her.'
5 La quale cosa quando l'udi Iacob, non vi essendo i figliuoli, ed occupati nel pascere delle pecore, istette quieto, insino a tanto ch' egli ritornasseno.	5 Meanwhile, Jacob had heard how his daughter Dinah had been dishonoured, but since his sons wereout in the countryside with his livestock, Jacob said nothing until they came back.
6 Ma venuto Emor, padre di Sichem, per fa vellare a Iacob,	6 Hamor father of Shechem was visiting Jacob to discuss the matter with him,
7 ed ecco i figliuoli suoi che ritornano del campo; e udito quello ch' era intervenuto, adirati sono molto; impercio che sozza cosa si era adoperata in Israel, ed isforzata la figliuola di Iacob, cosa non lecita avesse perpetrata.	7 when Jacob's sons returned from the countryside and heard the news; the men were outraged andinfuriated that Shechem had insulted Israel by sleeping with Jacob's daughter -- a thing total y unacceptable.
8 E favello adunque Emor a loro: l'anima di Sichem, figliuolo mio, s'accostò all'anima della figliuola vostra; date colei a lui per moglie.	8 Hamor reasoned with them as fol ows, 'My son Shechem's heart is set on your daughter. Please al owher to marry him.
9 E giugniamo insieme matrimonii: le vostre figliuole date a noi; le nostre figliuole tollete.	9 Intermarry with us; give us your daughters and take our daughters for yourselves.
10 E abitate con esso noi. La terra è in la vostra podestà; adoperatela, e guadagnate, e possedete lei.	10 We can live together, and the country wil be open to you, for you to live in, and move about in, andacquire holdings.'
11 Ma Sichem al padre e fratelli suoi disse: io troverò grazia inanzi a voi, e chiunque istatui rete, vi daro.	11 Then Shechem addressed the girl's father and brothers, 'Grant me this favour, and I will give youwhatever you ask.
12 Accrescete la dote; doni addomandate: volentieri vi darò quello che addomandate; solamente datemi la fanciulla per moglie.	12 Demand as high a bride-price from me as you please, and I wil pay as much as you ask. Only let memarry the girl.'
13 Rispuose i figliuoli di Iacob a Sichem e al padre suo in dolo, crudelenti per la vergogna della sorella:	13 Jacob's sons gave Shechem and his father Hamor a crafty answer, speaking as they did because hehad dishonoured their sister Dinah.
14 Noi non potiamo fare quello che tu dimandi, nè dare la sorella nostra a uomo non circonciso, la quale cosa non è lecita, e appresso di noi nefanda.	14 'We cannot do this,' they said to them. 'To give our sister to an uncircumcised man would be adisgrace for us.
15 Ma in questa cosa possiamo fare patto, se voi vorrete essere simili di noi, e sia circonciso ciascuno maschio di voi.	15 We can agree only on one condition: that you become like us by circumcising al your males.
16 Allora daremo e torremo insieme le figliuole vostre e le nostre; e abiteremo con voi, e saremo uno popolo.	16 Then we wil give you our daughters, taking yours for ourselves; and we wil stay with you to makeone nation.
17 E se non vi vorrete circoncidere, torremo la figliuola nostra, e partirenci.	17 But if you will not agree to our terms about being circumcised, we shal take our daughter and go.'
18 Piacque l'offerta loro e ad Emor e a Si chem suo figliuolo.	18 Hamor and Shechem son of Hamor were pleased with what they heard.
19 Nè non indugiò lo figliuolo, che inconta nente quello che se gli addomandava compiè; amava in verità molto la fanciulla, ed egli era inclito in ogni casa del padre suo.	19 The young man did not hesitate about doing this, for he was deeply in love with Jacob's daughter.Moreover he was the most respected member of his entire family.
20 E venuti alla porta della città, favellarono alli popoli:	20 Hamor and his son Shechem went to the gate of their town and spoke to their fellow-townsmen asfol ows,
21 Questi uomini sono pacifici, e vogliono abitare con esso noi; guadàgnino nella terra, ed operino lei, la quale è spaziosa e lata, ed hae bisogno di coltivatori; e le loro figliuole torremo per nostre mogli, e le nostre daremo a loro.	21 'These men are friendly; let them settle in the region and move about freely in it; there is plenty ofroom here for them; we shal marry their daughters and give our daughters to them.
22 Tanto una differenza è a.tanto bene: se noi circoncideremo i maschi nostri, l'andamento della gente seguitanti,	22 But these men will agree to settle with us and become a single nation only on this condition: that alour males be circumcised like them.
23 la sustanzia loro e le bestie, ed ogni cosa che posseggono, nostre saranno; solamente in questa cosa acconsentiamo, ed abitanti insieme uno popolo ci facciamo.	23 Wil not the livestock they own, al their animals, become ours? Then let us give our assent to this, sothat they can settle with us.'
24 E consentirono tutti, circoncisi tutti i maschi.	24 Al the citizens of the town agreed to the proposal made by Hamor and his son Shechem, and al themales were circumcised.
25 Ed ecco, lo dì terzo, quando lo dolore delle ferite era più grave, tolti dui figliuoli di Iacob i coltelli, ciò fue Simeon e Levi fratelli di Dina, e vennero confidentemente, ed uccisero ogni maschio.	25 Now on the third day, when the men were stil in pain, Jacob's two sons Simeon and Levi, Dinah'sbrothers, each took his sword and advanced unopposed against the town and slaughtered al the males.
26 Emor e Sichem parimente morirono; e tolsero Dina della casa di Sichem, loro sorella.	26 They kil ed Hamor and his son Shechem with the sword, removed Dinah from Shechem's house andcame away.
27 I quali venuti, tutti i figliuoli di Iacob cor sero sopra gli uccisi; e depopularono tutta la città per vendetta del vituperio,	27 When Jacob's other sons came on the slain, they pil aged the town in reprisal for the dishonouring oftheir sister.
28 le pecore loro e l'armenta loro e li asini e ogni cosa guastando, le quali erano nelle case, e quelle ch' erano ne' campi.	28 They seized their flocks, cattle, donkeys, everything else in the town and in the countryside,
29 E' fanciulli piccinini loro e le mogli loro menarono per prigioni.	29 and al their possessions. They took al their children and wives captive and looted everything to befound in the houses.
30 Le quali cose arditamente [ fatte ], Iacob disse a Simeon e a Levi: voi avete turbato me, e fatto me odioso de' Cananei e de' Ferezei e degli abitatori di questa terra; noi pochi siamo, ed egli raunati per cuoteranno me, e sarò guasto io, e la casa mia.	30 Jacob said to Simeon and Levi, 'You have done me an il turn by bringing me into bad odour with thepeople of the region, the Canaanites and the Perizzites. I have few men, whereas they wil unite against me todefeat me and destroy me and my family.'
31 Rispuosero: or doveano eglino usare colla sorella nostra, siccome è iscorto?	31 They retorted, 'Should our sister be treated like a whore?'
