| 2 Ebbe due mogli, delle quali una chiamava Anna, e l'altra Fenenna ebbe dei figlioli, mentre Anna non ne aveva punto. | 2 He had two wives; the name of the one was Hannah, and the name of the other Peninnah. And Peninnah had children, but Hannah had no children. |
| 3 Elcana era solito salire dalla sua città nei giorni prescritti, per adorare e sacrificare al Signore degli eserciti in Silo, dove erano come sacerdoti del Signore i due figli d'Eli, Cofni e Finees. | 3 Now this man used to go up year by year from his city to worship and to sacrifice to the LORD of hosts at Shiloh, where the two sons of Eli, Hophni and Phinehas, were priests of the LORD. |
| 4 Venuto adunque il giorno, Elcana andava ad offrire un sacrifizio e ne dave delle porzioni alla sua moglie Fenenna,a tutti i figli e le figlie di lei; | 4 On the day when Elkanah sacrificed, he would give portions to Peninnah his wife and to all her sons and daughters; |
| 5 ma ad Anna, da lui amata, dava con tristezza una sola porzione, perchè il Signore l'aveva fatta sterile. | 5 and, although he loved Hannah, he would give Hannah only one portion, because the LORD had closed her womb. |
| 6 L'affliggeva e la tormentava per di più la sua rivale, fino a rinfacciarle d'essere stata fatta sterile al Signore. | 6 And her rival used to provoke her sorely, to irritate her, because the LORD had closed her womb. |
| 7 Or siccome tutti gli anni,quando tornava il tempo di salire al empio del Signore, così faceva e così la provocava che Anna piangeva e non prendeva cibo. | 7 So it went on year by year; as often as she went up to the house of the LORD, she used to provoke her. Therefore Hannah wept and would not eat. |
| 8 Elcana suo marito le disse: « Anna, perchè piangi? Perché non mangi? Perchè stai col cuore afflitto? Non son forse per te meglio che dieci figli? » | 8 And Elkanah, her husband, said to her, "Hannah, why do you weep? And why do you not eat? And why is your heart sad? Am I not more to you than ten sons?" |
| 9 Or Anna, dopo aver mangiato e bevuto in Silo, si alzò, e, mentre il sacerdote Eli stava seduto sulla sua sedia davanti alla porta del tempio del Signore, essa, | 9 After they had eaten and drunk in Shiloh, Hannah rose. Now Eli the priest was sitting on the seat beside the doorpost of the temple of the LORD. |
| 10 col cuore amareggiato, si mise a pregare il Signore, piangendo dirottamente, | 10 She was deeply distressed and prayed to the LORD, and wept bitterly. |
| 11 e fece un voto, dicendo: « Signore degli eserciti, se volgendo lo sguardo a ammirare l'afflizione della tua serva, ti ricorderai di me e senza dimenticarti della tua serva, darai alla tua schiava un figlio maschio, io l'offrirò al Signore per tutti i giorni della sua vita, e il rasoio non passerà mai sopra la sua testa ». | 11 And she vowed a vow and said, "O LORD of hosts, if thou wilt indeed look on the affliction of thy maidservant, and remember me, and not forget thy maidservant, but wilt give to thy maidservant a son, then I will give him to the LORD all the days of his life, and no razor shall touch his head." |
| 12 Or mentre essa moltiplicava le preghiere davanti al Signore, Eli ne osservava la bocca. | 12 As she continued praying before the LORD, Eli observed her mouth. |
| 13 E siccome Anna parlava nel suo cuore, movendo soltanto le labbra, senza far sentire per niente la voce, Eli credette che fosse briaca, | 13 Hannah was speaking in her heart; only her lips moved, and her voice was not heard; therefore Eli took her to be a drunken woman. |
| 14 e le disse: « Fino a quando sarai briaca? Guarda di digerire un poco il vino di cui sei piena». | 14 And Eli said to her, "How long will you be drunken? Put away your wine from you." |
| 15 Anna rispose: « Non è per questo, signor mio, ma essendo io una donna troppo infelice, senza aver bevuto vino od altra cosa inebriante, ho effuso l'anima mia nel cospetto del Signore. | 15 But Hannah answered, "No, my lord, I am a woman sorely troubled; I have drunk neither wine nor strong drink, but I have been pouring out my soul before the LORD. |
| 16 Non prendere la tua serva per una delle figlie di Belial; perché è nella grandezza del mio dolore e della mia afflizione che ho parlato fino ad ora ». | 16 Do not regard your maidservant as a base woman, for all along I have been speaking out of my great anxiety and vexation." |
| 17 Allora Eli le disse: « Va in pace, e il Dio d'Israele ti conceda la grazia che gli hai chiesta ». | 17 Then Eli answered, "Go in peace, and the God of Israel grant your petition which you have made to him." |
| 18 Anna rispose: «Piacesse a Dio che la tua serva trovi grazia davanti a te ». Poi se ne andò per la sua strada e mangiò, e il suo volto non fu più smorto. | 18 And she said, "Let your maidservant find favor in your eyes." Then the woman went her way and ate, and her countenance was no longer sad. |
| 19 La mattina dopo si levarono e, fatta l'adorazione davanti al Signore, si misero in cammino e ritornarono nella loro casa a Ramata. Elcana poi conobbe sua moglie Anna ed essendosi il Signore ricordato di lei, a | 19 They rose early in the morning and worshiped before the LORD; then they went back to their house at Ramah. And Elkanah knew Hannah his wife, and the LORD remembered her; |
| 20 essa, dopo un giro di giorni, concepì e diede alla luce un figlio a cui pose nome Samuele, perchè lo aveva domandato al Signore. | 20 and in due time Hannah conceived and bore a son, and she called his name Samuel, for she said, "I have asked him of the LORD." |
| 21 E quando Elcana suo marito salì con tutta la sua famiglia per immolare l'ostia solenne al Signore e sciogliere il suo voto, | 21 And the man Elkanah and all his house went up to offer to the LORD the yearly sacrifice, and to pay his vow. |
| 22 Anna non vi salì, anzi disse al marito: «Io non vi salirò fino a tanto che il bambino non sia slattato e non lo conduca a comparire davanti al Signore, perchè vi dimori per sempre » | 22 But Hannah did not go up, for she said to her husband, "As soon as the child is weaned, I will bring him, that he may appear in the presence of the LORD, and abide there for ever." |
| 23 Elcana suo marito le disse: «Fa pure quello che ti sembra bene, e rimani finché tu non lo abbia slattato, ed io prego che il Signore adempia la sua parola ». Anna adunque rimase a casa, e diede il latte al suo figlio, finché non fu slattato. | 23 Elkanah her husband said to her, "Do what seems best to you, wait until you have weaned him; only, may the LORD establish his word." So the woman remained and nursed her son, until she weaned him. |
| 24 Quando poi l'ebbe slattato, lo prese seco con tre vitelli, tre moggia di farina e un vaso di vino, e lo menò alla casa del Signore in Silo. Il fanciullo era ancora piccolino. | 24 And when she had weaned him, she took him up with her, along with a three-year-old bull, an ephah of flour, and a skin of wine; and she brought him to the house of the LORD at Shiloh; and the child was young. |
| 25 Immolato che ebbero un vitello, presentarono il fanciullo ad Eli. | 25 Then they slew the bull, and they brought the child to Eli. |
| 26 E Anna disse: « Ti scongiuro, o signor mio, (come è vero che) l'anima tua vive, o Signore, io son quella donna che stetti qui davanti a te a pregare il Signore. | 26 And she said, "Oh, my lord! As you live, my lord, I am the woman who was standing here in your presence, praying to the LORD. |
| 27 Io pregai per questo bambino, e il Signore mi concesse la grazia che gli chiesi | 27 For this child I prayed; and the LORD has granted me my petition which I made to him. |
| 28 ed io per questo l'ho prestato al Signore per tutti i giorni nei quali egli sarà dato in prestito al Signore ». Si prostrarono in adorazione davanti al Signore. E Anna pregò e disse: | 28 Therefore I have lent him to the LORD; as long as he lives, he is lent to the LORD." And they worshipped the LORD there. |
