1 בִּשְׁנַת חֲדָה לְבֵלְאשַׁצַּר מֶלֶךְ בָּבֶל דָּנִיֵּאל חֵלֶם חֲזָה וְחֶזְוֵי רֵאשֵׁהּ עַל־מִשְׁכְּבֵהּ בֵּאדַיִן חֶלְמָא כְתַב רֵאשׁ מִלִּין אֲמַר	1 I too am mortal like everyone else, a descendant of the first man formed from the earth. I was model edin flesh inside a mother's womb,
2 עָנֵה דָנִיֵּאל וְאָמַר חָזֵה הֲוֵית בְּחֶזְוִי עִם־לֵילְיָא וַאֲרוּ אַרְבַּע רוּחֵי שְׁמַיָּא מְגִיחָן לְיַמָּא רַבָּא	2 where, for ten months, in blood I acquired substance -- the result of virile seed and pleasure, sleep'scompanion.
3 וְאַרְבַּע חֵיוָן רַבְרְבָן סָלְקָן מִן־יַמָּא שָׁנְיָן דָּא מִן־דָּא	3 I too, when I was born, drew in the common air, I fel on the same ground that bears us al , and cryingwas the first sound I made, like everyone else.
4 קַדְמָיְתָא כְאַרְיֵה וְגַפִּין דִּי־נְשַׁר לַהּ חָזֵה הֲוֵית עַד דִּי־מְּרִיטוּ גַפַּיהּ וּנְטִילַת מִן־אַרְעָא וְעַל־רַגְלַיִן כֶּאֱנָשׁ הֳקִימַת וּלְבַב אֱנָשׁ יְהִיב לַהּ	4 I was nurtured in swaddling clothes, with every care.
5 וַאֲרוּ חֵיוָה אָחֳרִי תִנְיָנָה דָּמְיָה לְדֹב וְלִשְׂטַר־חַד הֳקִמַת וּתְלָת עִלְעִין בְּפֻמַּהּ בֵּין [שִׁנַּיַּהּ כ] (שִׁנַּהּ ק) וְכֵן אָמְרִין לַהּ קוּמִי אֲכֻלִי בְּשַׂר שַׂגִּיא	5 No king has known any other beginning of existence;
6 בָּאתַר דְּנָה חָזֵה הֲוֵית וַאֲרוּ אָחֳרִי כִּנְמַר וְלַהּ גַּפִּין אַרְבַּע דִּי־עֹוף עַל־ [גַּבַּיַּהּ כ] (גַּבַּהּ ק) וְאַרְבְּעָה רֵאשִׁין לְחֵיוְתָא וְשָׁלְטָן יְהִיב לַהּ	6 for there is only one way into life, and one way out of it.
7 בָּאתַר דְּנָה חָזֵה הֲוֵית בְּחֶזְוֵי לֵילְיָא וַאֲרוּ חֵיוָה [רְבִיעָיָה כ] (רְבִיעָאָה ק) דְּחִילָה וְאֵימְתָנִי וְתַקִּיפָא יַתִּירָא וְשִׁנַּיִן דִּי־פַרְזֶל לַהּ רַבְרְבָן אָכְלָה וּמַדֱּקָה וּשְׁאָרָא [בְּרַגְלַיַּהּ כ] (בְּרַגְלַהּ ק) רָפְסָה וְהִיא מְשַׁנְּיָה מִן־כָּל־חֵיוָתָא דִּי קָדָמַיהּ וְקַרְנַיִן עֲשַׂר לַהּ	7 And so I prayed, and understanding was given me; I entreated, and the spirit of Wisdom came to me.
8 מִשְׂתַּכַּל הֲוֵית בְּקַרְנַיָּא וַאֲלוּ קֶרֶן אָחֳרִי זְעֵירָה סִלְקָת [בֵּינֵיהֹון כ] (בֵּינֵיהֵן ק) וּתְלָת מִן־קַרְנַיָּא קַדְמָיָתָא [אֶתְעֲקַרוּ כ] (אֶתְעֲקַרָה ק) מִן־ [קֳדָמַיַּהּ כ] (קֳדָמַהּ ק) וַאֲלוּ עַיְנִין כְּעַיְנֵי אֲנָשָׁא בְּקַרְנָא־דָא וּפֻם מְמַלִּל רַבְרְבָן	8 I esteemed her more than sceptres and thrones; compared with her, I held riches as nothing.
9 חָזֵה הֲוֵית עַד דִּי כָרְסָוָן רְמִיו וְעַתִּיק יֹומִין יְתִב לְבוּשֵׁהּ ׀ כִּתְלַג חִוָּר וּשְׂעַר רֵאשֵׁהּ כַּעֲמַר נְקֵא כָּרְסְיֵהּ שְׁבִיבִין דִּי־נוּר גַּלְגִּלֹּוהִי נוּר דָּלִק	9 I reckoned no precious stone to be her equal, for compared with her, al gold is a pinch of sand, andbeside her, silver ranks as mud.
10 נְהַר דִּי־נוּר נָגֵד וְנָפֵק מִן־קֳדָמֹוהִי אֶלֶף [אַלְפַיִם כ] (אַלְפִין ק) יְשַׁמְּשׁוּנֵּהּ וְרִבֹּו [רַבְּוָן כ] (רִבְבָן ק) קָדָמֹוהִי יְקוּמוּן דִּינָא יְתִב וְסִפְרִין פְּתִיחוּ	10 I loved her more than health or beauty, preferred her to the light, since her radiance never sleeps.
11 חָזֵה הֲוֵית בֵּאדַיִן מִן־קָל מִלַּיָּא רַבְרְבָתָא דִּי קַרְנָא מְמַלֱּלָה חָזֵה הֲוֵית עַד דִּי קְטִילַת חֵיוְתָא וְהוּבַד גִּשְׁמַהּ וִיהִיבַת לִיקֵדַת אֶשָּׁא	11 In her company al good things came to me, and at her hands incalculable wealth.
12 וּשְׁאָר חֵיוָתָא הֶעְדִּיו שָׁלְטָנְהֹון וְאַרְכָה בְחַיִּין יְהִיבַת לְהֹון עַד־זְמַן וְעִדָּן	12 All these delighted me, since Wisdom brings them, though I did not then realise that she was theirmother.
13 חָזֵה הֲוֵית בְּחֶזְוֵי לֵילְיָא וַאֲרוּ עִם־עֲנָנֵי שְׁמַיָּא כְּבַר אֱנָשׁ אָתֵה הֲוָה וְעַד־עַתִּיק יֹומַיָּא מְטָה וּקְדָמֹוהִי הַקְרְבוּהִי	13 What I learned diligently, I shal pass on liberally, I shal not conceal how rich she is.
14 וְלֵהּ יְהִיב שָׁלְטָן וִיקָר וּמַלְכוּ וְכֹל עַמְמַיָּא אֻמַיָּא וְלִשָּׁנַיָּא לֵהּ יִפְלְחוּן שָׁלְטָנֵהּ שָׁלְטָן עָלַם דִּי־לָא יֶעְדֵּה וּמַלְכוּתֵהּ דִּי־לָא תִתְחַבַּל׃ פ	14 For she is to human beings an inexhaustible treasure, and those who acquire this win God'sfriendship, commended to him by the gifts of instruction.
15 אֶתְכְּרִיַּת רוּחִי אֲנָה דָנִיֵּאל בְּגֹוא נִדְנֶה וְחֶזְוֵי רֵאשִׁי יְבַהֲלֻנַּנִי	15 May God grant me to speak as he would wish and conceive thoughts worthy of the gifts I havereceived, since he is both guide to Wisdom and director of sages;
16 קִרְבֵת עַל־חַד מִן־קָאֲמַיָּא וְיַצִּיבָא אֶבְעֵא־מִנֵּהּ עַל־כָּל־דְּנָה וַאֲמַר־לִי וּפְשַׁר מִלַּיָּא יְהֹודְעִנַּנִי	16 for we are in his hand, yes, ourselves and our sayings, and al intellectual and al practical knowledge.
17 אִלֵּין חֵיוָתָא רַבְרְבָתָא דִּי אִנִּין אַרְבַּע אַרְבְּעָה מַלְכִין יְקוּמוּן מִן־אַרְעָא	17 He it was who gave me sure knowledge of what exists, to understand the structure of the world andthe action of the elements,
18 וִיקַבְּלוּן מַלְכוּתָא קַדִּישֵׁי עֶלְיֹונִין וְיַחְסְנוּן מַלְכוּתָא עַד־עָלְמָא וְעַד עָלַם עָלְמַיָּא	18 the beginning, end and middle of the times, the alternation of the solstices and the succession of theseasons,
19 אֱדַיִן צְבִית לְיַצָּבָא עַל־חֵיוְתָא רְבִיעָיְתָא דִּי־הֲוָת שָׁנְיָה מִן־ [כָּלְּהֹון כ] (כָּלְּהֵין ק) דְּחִילָה יַתִּירָה [שִׁנַּיַּהּ כ] (שִׁנַּהּ ק) דִּי־פַרְזֶל וְטִפְרַיהּ דִּי־נְחָשׁ אָכְלָה מַדֲּקָה וּשְׁאָרָא בְּרַגְלַיהּ רָפְסָה	19 the cycles of the year and the position of the stars,
20 וְעַל־קַרְנַיָּא עֲשַׂר דִּי בְרֵאשַׁהּ וְאָחֳרִי דִּי סִלְקַת [וּנְפַלוּ כ] (וּנְפַלָה ק) מִן־ [קֳדָמַיַּהּ כ] (קֳדָמַהּ ק) תְּלָת וְקַרְנָא דִכֵּן וְעַיְנִין לַהּ וְפֻם מְמַלִּל רַבְרְבָן וְחֶזְוַהּ רַב מִן־חַבְרָתַהּ	20 the natures of animals and the instincts of wild beasts, the powers of spirits and human mentalprocesses, the varieties of plants and the medical properties of roots.
21 חָזֵה הֲוֵית וְקַרְנָא דִכֵּן עָבְדָה קְרָב עִם־קַדִּישִׁין וְיָכְלָה לְהֹון	21 And now I understand everything, hidden or visible, for Wisdom, the designer of all things, hasinstructed me.
22 עַד דִּי־אֲתָה עַתִּיק יֹומַיָּא וְדִינָא יְהִב לְקַדִּישֵׁי עֶלְיֹונִין וְזִמְנָא מְטָה וּמַלְכוּתָא הֶחֱסִנוּ קַדִּישִׁין	22 For within her is a spirit intel igent, holy, unique, manifold, subtle, mobile, incisive, unsul ied, lucid,invulnerable, benevolent, shrewd,
23 כֵּן אֲמַר חֵיוְתָא רְבִיעָיְתָא מַלְכוּ [רְבִיעָיָא כ] (רְבִיעָאָה ק) תֶּהֱוֵא בְאַרְעָא דִּי תִשְׁנֵא מִן־כָּל־מַלְכְוָתָא וְתֵאכֻל כָּל־אַרְעָא וּתְדוּשִׁנַּהּ וְתַדְּקִנַּהּ	23 irresistible, beneficent, friendly to human beings, steadfast, dependable, unperturbed, almighty, al -surveying, penetrating al intel igent, pure and most subtle spirits.
24 וְקַרְנַיָּא עֲשַׂר מִנַּהּ מַלְכוּתָה עַשְׂרָה מַלְכִין יְקֻמוּן וְאָחֳרָן יְקוּם אַחֲרֵיהֹון וְהוּא יִשְׁנֵא מִן־קַדְמָיֵא וּתְלָתָה מַלְכִין יְהַשְׁפִּל	24 For Wisdom is quicker to move than any motion; she is so pure, she pervades and permeates allthings.
25 וּמִלִּין לְצַד [עִלָּיָא כ] (עִלָּאָה ק) יְמַלִּל וּלְקַדִּישֵׁי עֶלְיֹונִין יְבַלֵּא וְיִסְבַּר לְהַשְׁנָיָה זִמְנִין וְדָת וְיִתְיַהֲבוּן בִּידֵהּ עַד־עִדָּן וְעִדָּנִין וּפְלַג עִדָּן	25 She is a breath of the power of God, pure emanation of the glory of the Almighty; so nothing impurecan find its way into her.
26 וְדִינָא יִתִּב וְשָׁלְטָנֵהּ יְהַעְדֹּון לְהַשְׁמָדָה וּלְהֹובָדָה עַד־סֹופָא	26 For she is a reflection of the eternal light, untarnished mirror of God's active power, and image of hisgoodness.
27 וּמַלְכוּתָה וְשָׁלְטָנָא וּרְבוּתָא דִּי מַלְכְוָת תְּחֹות כָּל־שְׁמַיָּא יְהִיבַת לְעַם קַדִּישֵׁי עֶלְיֹונִין מַלְכוּתֵהּ מַלְכוּת עָלַם וְכֹל שָׁלְטָנַיָּא לֵהּ יִפְלְחוּן וְיִשְׁתַּמְּעוּן	27 Although she is alone, she can do everything; herself unchanging, she renews the world, and,generation after generation, passing into holy souls, she makes them into God's friends and prophets;
28 עַד־כָּה סֹופָא דִי־מִלְּתָא אֲנָה דָנִיֵּאל שַׂגִּיא ׀ רַעְיֹונַי יְבַהֲלֻנַּנִי וְזִיוַי יִשְׁתַּנֹּון עֲלַי וּמִלְּתָא בְּלִבִּי נִטְרֵת׃ פ	28 for God loves only those who dwel with Wisdom.
	29 She is indeed more splendid than the sun, she outshines al the constel ations; compared with light,she takes first place,
	30 for light must yield to night, but against Wisdom evil cannot prevail.
