1 And Job, responding, said:	1 Job progovori i reče:
2 Truly, I know that it is so, and that man cannot be justified compared with God.	2 »Zaista, dobro ja znadem da je tako: kako da pred Bogom čovjek ima pravo?
3 If he chooses to contend with him, he is not able to respond to him once out of a thousand times.	3 Ako bi se tkogod htio preti s njime, odvratio mu ne bi ni jednom od tisuću.
4 He is understanding in heart and mighty in strength; who has resisted him and yet had peace?	4 Srcem on je mudar, a snagom svesilan, i tko bi se njemu nekažnjeno opro?
5 He has moved mountains, and those whom he overthrew in his fury did not know it.	5 On brda premješta, a ona to ne znaju, u jarosti svojoj on ih preokreće.
6 He shakes the earth out of its place and its pillars tremble.	6 Pokreće on zemlju sa njezina mjesta, iz temelja njene potresa stupove.
7 He commands the sun and it does not rise, and he closes the stars as if under a seal.	7 Kad zaprijeti suncu, ono se ne rađa, on pečatom svojim i zvijezde pečati.
8 He alone extends the heavens, and he walks upon the waves of the sea.	8 Jedini on je nebesa razapeo i pučinom morskom samo on hodao.
9 He fashions Arcturus, and Orion, and Hyades, and the interior of the south.	9 Stvorio je Medvjede i Oriona, Vlašiće i zvijezđa na južnome nebu.
10 He accomplishes great and incomprehensible and miraculous things, which cannot be numbered.	10 Tvorac on je djela silnih, nepojmljivih čudesa koja se izbrojit’ ne mogu.
11 If he approaches me, I will not see him; if he departs, I will not understand.	11 Ide pored mene, a ja ga ne vidim; evo, on prolazi – ja ga ne opažam.
12 If he suddenly should question, who will answer him? Or who can say, “Why did you do so?”	12 Ugrabi li što, tko će mu to priječit’, i tko ga pitat’ smije: ‘Što si učinio?’
13 God, whose wrath no one is able to resist, and under whom they bend who carry the world,	13 Bog silni srdžbu svoju ne opoziva: pred njim poniču saveznici Rahaba.
14 what am I then, that I should answer him and exchange words with him?	14 Pa kako onda da njemu odgovorim, koju riječ da protiv njega izaberem?
15 And if I now have any justice, I will not respond, but will beseech my judge.	15 I da sam u pravu, odvratio ne bih, u suca svojega milost bih molio.
16 And if he should listen to me when I call, I would not believe that he had heard my voice.	16 A kad bi se na zov moj i odazvao, vjerovao ne bih da on glas moj sluša.
17 For he will crush me in a whirlwind and multiply my wounds, even without cause.	17 Jer, za dlaku jednu on mene satire, bez razloga moje rane umnožava.
18 He does not permit my spirit to rest, and he fills me with bitterness.	18 Ni časa jednoga predahnut’ mi ne dâ, nego mene svakom gorčinom napaja!
19 If strength is sought, he is most strong; if equity in judgment, no one would dare to give testimony for me.	19 Ako je na snagu – ta on je najjači! Ako je na pravdu – tko će njega na sud?
20 If I wanted to justify myself, my own mouth will condemn me; if I would reveal my innocence, he would prove me depraved.	20 Da sam i prav, usta bi me osudila, da sam i nevin, zlim bi me proglasila.
21 And if I now became simple, my soul would be ignorant even of this, and my life would weary me.	21 A jesam li nevin? Ni sam ne znam više, moj je život meni sasvim omrzao!
22 There is one thing that I have said: both the innocent and the impious he consumes.	22 Jer, to je svejedno; i zato ja kažem: nevina i grešnika on dokončava.
23 If he scourges, let him kill all at once, and not laugh at the punishment of the innocent.	23 I bič smrtni kad bi odjednom ubijô... ali on se ruga nevolji nevinih.
24 Since the earth has been given into the hand of the impious, he covers the face of its judges; for if it is not him, then who is it?	24 U zemlji predanoj u šake zlikovaca, on oči sucima njezinim zastire. Ako on to nije, tko je drugi onda?
25 My days have been swifter than a messenger; they have fled and have not seen goodness.	25 Od skoroteče su brži moji dani, bježe daleko, nigdje dobra ne videć’.
26 They have passed by like ships carrying fruits, just like an eagle flying to food.	26 K’o čamci od rogoza hitro promiču, k’o orao na plijen kada se zaleti.
27 If I say: “By no means will I speak this way.” I change my face and I am tortured with sorrow.	27 Kažem li: zaboravit ću jadikovku, razvedrit ću lice i veseo biti,
28 I have dreaded all my works, knowing that you did not spare the offender.	28 od mojih me muka groza obuzima, jer znadem da me ti ne držiš nevinim.
29 Yet, if I am also just as impious, why have I labored in vain?	29 Ako li sam grešan, ta čemu onda da zalud mučim sebe.
30 If I had been washed with snow-like waters, and my hands were shining like the cleanest thing,	30 Kad bih i sniježnicom sebe ja isprao, kad bih i lugom ruke svoje umio,
31 yet you would plunge me in filth, and my own garments would abhor me.	31 u veću bi me nečist opet gurnuo, i moje bi me se gnušale haljine!
32 For even I would not answer a man who were like myself, nor one who could be heard with me equally in judgment.	32 Nije čovjek k’o ja da se s njime pravdam i na sud da idem s njim se parničiti.
33 There is no one who could both prevail in argument and in placing his hand between the two.	33 Niti kakva suca ima među nama da ruke svoje stavi na nas dvojicu,
34 Let him take his staff away from me, and let not the fear of him terrify me.	34 da šibu njegovu od mene odmakne, da užas njegov mene više ne plaši!
35 I will speak and I will not fear him, for in fearfulness I am not able to respond.	35 Govorit ću ipak bez ikakva straha, jer ja nisam takav u svojim očima!
