1 Gorgias took with him five thousand foot and a thousand picked cavalry, and the force moved off bynight	1 І взяв Горгій 5000 чоловік і 1000 добірної кінноти й вирушив зо своїм військом уночі,
2 with the object of attacking the Jewish position and dealing them an unexpected blow; the men fromthe Citadel were there to guide him.	2 щоб напасти на юдейський табір і несподівано їх розгромити. Люди з твердині були їхніми провідниками.
3 Judas got wind of it and himself moved off with his fighters to strike at the royal army at Emmaus,	3 Почув про те Юда й двигнувся зо своїми вояками, щоб ударити на царське військо під Емаусом,
4 while its fighting troops were stil dispersed outside the camp.	4 заки воно ще розкинулось поза табором.
5 Hence, when Gorgias reached Judas' camp, he found no one and began looking for the Jews in themountains. 'For', he said, 'we have got them on the run.'	5 Горгій прибув уночі у табір Юди та, не знайшовши там нікого, заходився їх шукати у горах, бо він казав: «Вони від нас утікають.»
6 First light found Judas in the plain with three thousand men, although these lacked the armour andswords they would have wished.	6 Як почало на день благословитись, з’явився Юда з 3000 чоловік на рівнині, але без покриття й мечів, яких вони бажали б.
7 They could now see the gentile encampment with its strong fortifications and cavalry surrounding it,clearly people who understood warfare.	7 Вони побачили поганський табір, сильний та укріплений до того ще й оточений кіннотою все було до війни вправне, —
8 Judas said to his men, 'Do not be afraid of their numbers, and do not flinch at their attack.	8 і Юда сказав людям, що були з ним: «Не бійтесь, що їх така сила, й не жахайтесь їхнього натиску.
9 Remember how our ancestors were delivered at the Red Sea when Pharaoh was pursuing them inforce.	9 Згадайте, як спаслись ваші батьки в Червонім морі, коли за ними гнався фараон з військом.
10 And now let us cal on Heaven: if he cares for us, he wil remember his covenant with our ancestorsand will destroy this army confronting us today;	10 Ось і тепер закличемо голосно до неба, щоб допомогло нам та згадало про союз із батьками й розбило перед нами оцю навалу,
11 then all the nations wil know for certain that there is One who ransoms and saves Israel.'	11 та щоб усі народи взнали, хто той, що Ізраїля спасає та збавляє.»
12 The foreigners looked up and, seeing the Jews advancing against them,	12 Чужинці, підвівши очі, побачили юдеїв, що йшли їм назустріч,
13 came out of the camp to join battle. Judas' men sounded the trumpet	13 і вийшли з табору, щоб з ними воювати. Тоді ті, що були при Юді, засурмили,
14 and engaged them. The gentiles were defeated and fled towards the plain	14 і почався бій. Погани були розбиті, і втекли на рівнину,
15 and al the stragglers fel by the sword. The pursuit continued as far as Gezer and the plains ofIdumaea, Azotus and Jamnia, and the enemy lost about three thousand men.	15 а ті, що були відстали ззаду, полягли всі від меча. Гналися за ними аж до Гезеру, до рівнини Ідумеї, Азоту та Ямнії, при якій полягло близько 3000 чоловік.
16 Breaking off the pursuit, Judas returned with his men	16 Юда, з військом завернувши з погоні, прийшов назад
17 and said to the people, 'Never mind the booty, for we have another battle ahead of us.	17 і мовив до народу: «Не накидайтесь на здобич, бо мусимо далі воювати.
18 Gorgias and his troops are still near us in the mountains. First stand up to our enemies and fight them,and then you can safely collect the booty.'	18 Горгій і його військо поблизу нас у горах. Стійте твердо тепер супроти наших ворогів, воюйте з ними, а опісля візьмете здобич спокійно.»
19 The words were hardly out of Judas' mouth, when a detachment came into view, peering down fromthe mountain.	19 Не встиг Юда цих слів скінчити, аж ось із-за гори з’явилась частина війська
20 Observing that their own troops had been routed and that the camp had been fired -- since the smoke,which they could see, attested the fact-	20 і побачила, що свої були примушені до втечі й що табір у вогні, бо дим, який побачили, дав знати, що сталося;
21 they were panic-stricken at the sight; and when, furthermore, they saw Judas' troops drawn up forbattle on the plain,	21 тож злякалися вони вельми, особливо, коли побачили військо Юди, готове до бою на рівнині,
22 they al fled into Philistine territory.	22 і втекли всі у землю Філістимлянську,
23 Judas then turned back to plunder the camp, and a large sum in gold and silver, with violet and sea-purple stuffs, and many other valuables were carried off.	23 а Юда повернувся тоді назад на грабунок табору. І забрано багато золота, срібла, блавату, кармазину й силу інших дорогих речей.
24 On their return, the Jews chanted praises to Heaven, singing, 'He is kind and his love is everlasting!'	24 А як повернулися, то почали хвалити й благословляти небо, бо добре, бо милость його повіки.
25 That day had seen a remarkable deliverance in Israel.	25 Того дня ізраїльтяни осягнули велику перемогу.
26 Those of the foreigners who had escaped came and gave Lysias an account of all that had happened.	26 Ті ж чужинці, що врятувались, прибувши до Лісія, оповіли все, що сталося,
27 The news shocked and dismayed him, for affairs in Israel had not gone as he intended, and the resultwas quite the opposite to what the king had ordered.	27 а він, почувши те, збентеживсь і зневірився духом, бо з Ізраїлем не сталось так, як він того хотів би, й не збулось те, що цар йому звелів був.
28 The next year he mobilised sixty thousand picked troops and five thousand cavalry with the intentionof finishing off the Jews.	28 Тому він другого року зібрав 60 000 добірних вояків і 5000 кінноти, щоб завоювати юдеїв.
29 They advanced into Idumaea and made their base at Beth-Zur, where Judas met them with tenthousand men.	29 Прибувши в Ідумею, вони отаборились у Бетцурі, і Юда вийшов їм навпроти з 10 000 чоловік.
30 When he saw their military strength he offered this prayer, 'Blessed are you, Saviour of Israel, whoshattered the mighty warrior's attack at the hand of your servant David, and delivered the Philistine camp into thehands of Jonathan son of Saul, and his armour-bearer.	30 Побачивши могутнє військо, він почав молитись і мовив: «Благословен єси, Спасителю Ізраїля, що знищив натиск велетня рукою Давида, слуги твого, що видав табір філістимлян у руки Йонатана, сина Саула та його зброєноші.
31 Crush this expedition in the same way at the hands of your people Israel; let their troops and cavalrybring them nothing but shame.	31 Отак замкни й оце військо в руці Ізраїля, твого народу. Ганьба нехай поб’є їхнє військо та їхню кінноту!
32 Sow panic in their ranks, confound the confidence they put in their numbers and send them reeling indefeat.	32 Нашли на них великий страх! Розбий їхню смілість, що в їхній силі. Нехай загинуть у своїй поразці.
33 Overthrow them by the sword of those who love you, and all who acknowledge your name wil singyour praises.'	33 Побий їх мечем тих, що тебе люблять, нехай тебе хвалять піснями всі ті, що знають твоє ім’я.»
34 The two forces engaged, and five thousand men of Lysias' troops fel in hand-to-hand fighting.	34 Прийшло до бою, і з війська Лісія полягло близько 5000 чоловік, що впали на очах юдеїв.
35 Seeing the rout of his army and the courage of Judas' troops and their readiness to live or die nobly,Lysias withdrew to Antioch, where he recruited mercenaries for a further invasion of Judaea in even greaterstrength.	35 І як побачив Лісій розгром війська свого й відвагу Юди та його вояків, що були готові чи жити, чи по-вояцькому згинути, повернувся в Антіохію, де найняв численніше військо, щоб піти знову на Юдею.
36 Judas and his brothers then said, 'Now that our enemies have been defeated, let us go up to purifythe sanctuary and dedicate it.'	36 Тоді Юда та його брати сказали: «Оце розгромлений наш ворог! Ходім і очистьмо храм та посвятімо!»
37 So they marshal ed the whole army, and went up to Mount Zion.	37 І зібралось військо й пішло на гору Сіон.
38 There they found the sanctuary deserted, the altar desecrated, the gates burnt down, and vegetationgrowing in the courts as it might in a wood or on some mountain, while the storerooms were in ruins.	38 Побачили вони храм спустошений, жертовник сплюгавлений, двері спалені, двори зарослі травою, немов у ліску або неначе десь у горах, а покої у руїнах, —
39 They tore their garments and mourned bitterly, putting dust on their heads.	39 і розірвали на собі одежу, били себе в груди й сипали попіл собі на голову.
40 They prostrated themselves on the ground, and when the trumpets gave the signal they cried aloud toHeaven.	40 Потім упали обличчям до землі, засурмили на сполох і зняли голос до неба.
41 Judas then ordered his men to keep the Citadel garrison engaged until he had purified the sanctuary.	41 Тоді Юда велів своїм воякам воювати тих, що були у твердині, аж поки не очистять храму.
42 Next, he selected priests who were blameless and zealous for the Law	42 Вибрав він бездоганних священиків, ревнителів закону,
43 to purify the sanctuary and remove the stones of the 'Pollution' to some unclean place.	43 й очистили вони храм, забравши у нечисте місце сплюгавлене каміння.
44 They discussed what should be done about the altar of burnt offering which had been profaned,	44 Щождо сплюгавленого жертовника всепалень, то відбуто нараду, що з ним чинити,
45 and very properly decided to pul it down, rather than later be embarrassed about it since it had beendefiled by the gentiles. They therefore demolished it	45 і щасливо спало їм на думку зруйнувати його, щоб він не став їм ганьбою, бо погани були сплюгавили його;
46 and deposited the stones in a suitable place on the hil of the Dwel ing to await the appearance of aprophet who should give a ruling about them.	46 отож його таки зруйновано, а каміння поскладано на горі храму, на підхожім місці, доки не з’явиться пророк, щоб дати про них якунебудь раду.
47 They took unhewn stones, as the Law prescribed, and built a new altar on the lines of the old one.	47 Взяли нетесаного каміння, за законом, і спорудили новий жертовник, такий, як перший,
48 They restored the Holy Place and the interior of the Dwel ing, and purified the courts.	48 і відбудували храм і все, що було в середині його, освятили двори,
49 They made new sacred vessels, and brought the lamp-stand, the altar of incense, and the table intothe Temple.	49 зробили наново святий посуд і внесли ліхтар, кадильний жертовник і стіл у храм.
50 They burned incense on the altar and lit the lamps on the lamp-stand, and these shone inside theTemple.	50 І запалили на жертовнику ладан, засвітили світичі на ліхтарі, що сяяли у храмі.
51 They placed the loaves on the table and hung the curtains and completed al the tasks they hadundertaken.	51 На стіл поклали хліби, розп’яли завіси і скінчили все, за що були взялись.
52 On the twenty-fifth of the ninth month, Chislev, in the year 148 they rose at dawn	52 Двадцять п’ятого дня дев’ятого місяця — місяця Хаселев — 148 року встали вони вранці
53 and offered a lawful sacrifice on the new altar of burnt offering which they had made.	53 і принесли, за законом, жертву на новім жертовнику для всепалень, що були зробили.
54 The altar was dedicated, to the sound of hymns, zithers, lyres and cymbals, at the same time of yearand on the same day on which the gentiles had original y profaned it.	54 Жертовник був посвячений під спів пісень і під гру на гуслах, гарфах та цимбалах тієї самої пори й того самого дня, коли його погани були осквернили.
55 The whole people fel prostrate in adoration and then praised Heaven who had granted them success.	55 Увесь народ упав обличчям до землі, й поклонились та благословили небо, що дало їм перемогу.
56 For eight days they celebrated the dedication of the altar, joyful y offering burnt offerings, communionand thanksgiving sacrifices.	56 Вісім день тривала посвята жертовника, і з радістю були принесені всепалення й жертви визволення й хвали.
57 They ornamented the front of the Temple with crowns and bosses of gold, renovated the gates andstorerooms, providing the latter with doors.	57 Передню сторону храму приоздоблено золотими вінцями й маленькими щитами, поправлено двері й священичі покої, поставлено до них замки.
58 There was no end to the rejoicing among the people, since the disgrace inflicted by the gentiles hadbeen effaced.	58 Вельми велика була радість у народі, а ганьба, що завдали її погани, була змита.
59 Judas, with his brothers and the whole assembly of Israel, made it a law that the days of thededication of the altar should be celebrated yearly at the proper season, for eight days beginning on the twenty-fifth of the month of Chislev, with rejoicing and gladness.	59 Тоді Юда та його брати й уся громада Ізраїля ухвалили, щоб дні посвяти жертовника святковано було у свою пору щороку 8 днів, починаючи від двадцять п’ятого дня місяця Хаселев, з радістю та веселощами.
60 They then proceeded to build high wal s with strong towers round Mount Zion, to prevent the gentilesfrom coming and riding roughshod over it as in the past.	60 Під ту ж саму пору обвели Сіон-гору навколо високим муром і збудували потужні башти, щоб погани, якби повернулися, знову не збурили святиню, як це зробили вони перед тим.
61 Judas stationed a garrison there to guard it; he also fortified Beth-Zur, so that the people would havea fortress confronting Idumaea.	61 Юда поставив там залогу, щоб стерегти її; а щоб її укріпити, укріпив він і Бетсур, — щоб народ мав твердиню супроти ідумеїв.
