Luke 23

1 Then the whole assembly of them arose and brought him before Pilate.	1 E levoronsi tutti, e menoronlo a Pilato.
2 They brought charges against him, saying, "We found this man misleading our people; he opposes the payment of taxes to Caesar and maintains that he is the Messiah, a king."	2 E accusaronlo e dicevano noi abbiamo trovato costui, sovvertitore (e ingannatore) della gente nostra, e contradicente che il tributo non si dia a Cesare; e da sè medesimo dice ch' egli è Cristo (figliuolo di Dio, ed è) re (de' giudei).
3 Pilate asked him, "Are you the king of the Jews?" He said to him in reply, "You say so."	3 E Pilato dimandò, se egli era re de' giudei; e Iesù rispose: tu l' hai detto.
4 Pilate then addressed the chief priests and the crowds, "I find this man not guilty."	4 Allora disse Pilato alli principi de' sacerdoti e ale turbe: io non trovo cagione niuna in questo uomo.
5 But they were adamant and said, "He is inciting the people with his teaching throughout all Judea, from Galilee where he began even to here."	5 Ed egli gridavano, dicendo: egli ha commosso tutto il popolo, predicando per tutta la Giudea, incominciando da Galilea insino quivi.
6 On hearing this Pilate asked if the man was a Galilean;	6 E Pilato, udendo ricordare Galilea, domandogli s' egli era Galileo.
7 and upon learning that he was under Herod's jurisdiction, he sent him to Herod who was in Jerusalem at that time.	7 E conoscendo ch' egli era della signoria di Erode, mandollo a Erode. Erode era in quel tempo in Ierusalem;
8 Herod was very glad to see Jesus; he had been wanting to see him for a long time, for he had heard about him and had been hoping to see him perform some sign.	8 e vedendo Iesù, ebbe grande allegrezza; imperò che lungo tempo avea desiderato di vederlo, imperò che avea di lui udito molte cose, e sperava di vedergli fare alcuno segno (e miracolo).
9 He questioned him at length, but he gave him no answer.	9 Addimandavalo di molte cose, e molte parole gli diceva; e Iesù nulla gli rispondeva.
10 The chief priests and scribes, meanwhile, stood by accusing him harshly.	10 E gli principi de' sacerdoti e gli Scribi stavano (fermi e) costanti ad accusarlo.
11 (Even) Herod and his soldiers treated him contemptuously and mocked him, and after clothing him in resplendent garb, he sent him back to Pilate.	11 (Vedendo) Erode disprezzollo, e tutta la sua famiglia; e schernironlo, e vestironlo di uno vestimento bianco, e rimandorlo a Pilato.
12 Herod and Pilate became friends that very day, even though they had been enemies formerly.	12 E in quel giorno furono amici Erode e Pilato; imperò che da indi inanzi erano stati inimici.
13 Pilate then summoned the chief priests, the rulers, and the people	13 E Pilato convocò gli principi de' sacerdoti e gli savii e il popolo.
14 and said to them, "You brought this man to me and accused him of inciting the people to revolt. I have conducted my investigation in your presence and have not found this man guilty of the charges you have brought against him,	14 E disse a loro: avete voi menato questo uomo, e dite ch' egli è ingannatore di gente; ecco ch' io dinanzi da voi esàminolo, e non trovo niuna cagione in lui di quelle cose che voi lo accusate.
15 nor did Herod, for he sent him back to us. So no capital crime has been committed by him.	15 E simigliantemente Erode ve l' ha rimandato; e imperò non ha fatto cosa che sia degno di morte.
16 Therefore I shall have him flogged and then release him."	16 Imperò il lassarò.
17	17 Avea Pilato di necessario di lasciare uno pregione per la festa,
18 But all together they shouted out, "Away with this man! Release Barabbas to us."	18 Ma l'università della turba gridava, e diceva: togli costui, e lascia Barabba.
19 (Now Barabbas had been imprisoned for a rebellion that had taken place in the city and for murder.)	19 Il quale Barabba per uno tradimento e uno omicidio era posto in pregione.
20 Again Pilate addressed them, still wishing to release Jesus,	20 E un' altra volta parlò Pilato alli giudei, dicendo di volere lasciare Iesù.
21 but they continued their shouting, "Crucify him! Crucify him!"	21 Egli gridavano, e dicevano: crucifiggilo, [crucifiggilo].
22 Pilate addressed them a third time, "What evil has this man done? I found him guilty of no capital crime. Therefore I shall have him flogged and then release him."	22 E anche Pilato la terza volta disse a loro: che male ha fatto questo uomo? io per me non trovo in lui niuna cagione per la quale egli debba morire; ma io il correggerò, e poi lasciarollo andare.
23 With loud shouts, however, they persisted in calling for his crucifixion, and their voices prevailed.	23 Ma loro stavano pur fermi (e costanti), e con grande voce addimandavano che fusse crucifisso; e crescevano (e multiplicavano) pur li gridi.
24 The verdict of Pilate was that their demand should be granted.	24 Allora Pilato esaudì la loro dimanda.
25 So he released the man who had been imprisoned for rebellion and murder, for whom they asked, and he handed Jesus over to them to deal with as they wished.	25 E lasciò a loro Barabba, il quale per un omicidio e uno tradimento era posto in pregione, il quale egli addimandavano; e dètte (a loro) Iesù alla loro volontà.
26 As they led him away they took hold of a certain Simon, a Cyrenian, who was coming in from the country; and after laying the cross on him, they made him carry it behind Jesus.	26 Li quali (preseno Iesù e) menoronlo a crucifiggerlo; e preseno uno uomo, che avea nome Simone Cireneo, che veniva di villa, e posengli la croce addosso, e andava con essa dietro a Iesù.
27 A large crowd of people followed Jesus, including many women who mourned and lamented him.	27 Ma molta turba di uomini e di donne seguitavanlo, piangendo e dolendosi per lui.
28 Jesus turned to them and said, "Daughters of Jerusalem, do not weep for me; weep instead for yourselves and for your children,	28 E Iesù voltossi a loro, e disse: figliuole di Ierusalem, non vogliate piangere sopra di me, ma piangete sopra di voi stesse e de' figliuoli vostri.
29 for indeed, the days are coming when people will say, 'Blessed are the barren, the wombs that never bore and the breasts that never nursed.'	29 Imperò che verranno gli giorni, nelli quali direte: beate le sterili, e gli ventri che non hanno generato, e le poppe che non hanno lattato.
30 At that time people will say to the mountains, 'Fall upon us!' and to the hills, 'Cover us!'	30 E allora incominciaranno a dire alli monti: cadete sopra di noi, e alli colli: copriteci.
31 for if these things are done when the wood is green what will happen when it is dry?"	31 Imperò che se nel legno verde fanno così, che faranno nel secco?
32 Now two others, both criminals, were led away with him to be executed.	32 Erano menati con Iesù due uomini iniqui per essere crucifissi.
33 When they came to the place called the Skull, they crucified him and the criminals there, one on his right, the other on his left.	33 E poi che furono giunti al luogo che si chiama Calvario, ivi il crucifissero, e con lui quelli due latroni, l'uno dalla parte dritta, e l'altro dalla manca.
34 [Then Jesus said, "Father, forgive them, they know not what they do."] They divided his garments by casting lots.	34 E Iesù diceva: perdona a loro, Padre; imperò che non sanno che si faccino. E divisero le vestimenta sue, ponendogli le sorti.
35 The people stood by and watched; the rulers, meanwhile, sneered at him and said, "He saved others, let him save himself if he is the chosen one, the Messiah of God."	35 E il popolo stava presente e aspettava, e li principi con loro insieme schernivanlo, e dicevano: gli altri ha fatto salvi, e sè medesimo non può salvare; se egli è eletto di Dio, discenda dalla croce, (e crederemogli).
36 Even the soldiers jeered at him. As they approached to offer him wine	36 E anche gli cavalieri scherni vanlo, andando e offerendogli l'aceto.
37 they called out, "If you are King of the Jews, save yourself."	37 E dicevano: se tu se' re de' giudei, salva te medesimo.
38 Above him there was an inscription that read, "This is the King of the Jews."	38 Era la soprascritta, posta sopra lui, di lettere greche ed ebraiche e latine, e diceva: QUESTO È IL RE DE' giudei.
39 Now one of the criminals hanging there reviled Jesus, saying, "Are you not the Messiah? Save yourself and us."	39 E uno de' latroni che pendeva in croce biastemavalo, e diceva: se tu sei Cristo, salva te medesimo, e anche noi.
40 The other, however, rebuking him, said in reply, "Have you no fear of God, for you are subject to the same condemnation?	40 E l'altro diceva, riprendendo il compagno: tu non temi Iddio, e sei in dannazione di morte.
41 And indeed, we have been condemned justly, for the sentence we received corresponds to our crimes, but this man has done nothing criminal."	41 Noi patiamo giustamente questa pena, imperò che abbiamo commessa la colpa; ma costui non ha commesso male niuno.
42 Then he said, "Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom."	42 E poi disse a losù: Signore, ricòrdati di me, quando sarai nel regno tuo.
43 He replied to him, "Amen, I say to you, today you will be with me in Paradise."	43 Disse a lui Iesù: in verità ti dico che oggi sarai meco in paradiso.
44 It was now about noon and darkness came over the whole land until three in the afternoon	44 Era quasi ora di sesta; e vennero le tenebre, e durorono insino all'ora di nona.
45 because of an eclipse of the sun. Then the veil of the temple was torn down the middle.	45 E oscurossi il sole; e il velo del tempio si divise tutto per mezzo.
46 Jesus cried out in a loud voice, "Father, into your hands I commend my spirit"; and when he had said this he breathed his last.	46 E Iesù mise una grande voce, e disse: Padre, nelle tue mani raccomando lo spirito mio. E così dicendo, lo spirito si partì.
47 The centurion who witnessed what had happened glorified God and said, "This man was innocent beyond doubt."	47 E vedendo Centurione quello ch' era stato fatto, glorificò Iddio, e disse: veramente questo uomo era giusto.
48 When all the people who had gathered for this spectacle saw what had happened, they returned home beating their breasts;	48 E tutta la turba ch' era quivi insieme, che aspettavano e vedevano queste cose che si facevano, percotevansi li petti loro, e ricognoscevansi.
49 but all his acquaintances stood at a distance, including the women who had followed him from Galilee and saw these events.	49 Ma tutti i suoi conoscenti stavano dalla lunga; e quelle donne, che l'avevano seguitato insino da Galilea, vedevano tutte queste cose.
50 Now there was a virtuous and righteous man named Joseph who, though he was a member of the council,	50 Ed ecco uno uomo buono e giusto, che avea nome Iosef, il quale era di Aramatea, il quale era cortegiano,
51 had not consented to their plan of action. He came from the Jewish town of Arimathea and was awaiting the kingdom of God.	51 e non avea consentito al consiglio e alle opere de' giudei; egli aspettava il regno di Dio.
52 He went to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus.	52 Questo andò a Pilato, e addimandogli il corpo di Iesù.
53 After he had taken the body down, he wrapped it in a linen cloth and laid him in a rock-hewn tomb in which no one had yet been buried.	53 (Ed ebbelo) e levollo di croce, e poselo in uno monumento nuovo, tagliato in una pietra, nel quale niuno ancora v'era stato posto.
54 It was the day of preparation, and the sabbath was about to begin.	54 Ed era il giorno della pasca, e incominciava a schiarare il giorno del sabbato.
55 The women who had come from Galilee with him followed behind, and when they had seen the tomb and the way in which his body was laid in it,	55 E vennero le femine, le quali erano venute con lui da Galilea, e veddero il monumento, e a quale modo eravi posto il corpo suo.
56 they returned and prepared spices and perfumed oils. Then they rested on the sabbath according to the commandment.	56 E ritornando apparecchiorono le speziarie odorifere e gli unguenti; e tacettero queste il sabbato, secondo il comandamento.
