Sirach 34

NEW AMERICAN BIBLE	Біблія
1 Empty and false are the hopes of the senseless, and fools are borne aloft by dreams.	1 Надії нерозумного — пусті та марні, і безглуздого окрилюють самі сновиддя.
2 Like a man who catches at shadows or chases the wind, is the one who believes in dreams.	2 Хто вірить сновиддям — скидається на того, що за тінь хапається і за вітром женеться.
3 What is seen in dreams is to reality what the reflection of a face is to the face itself.	3 Це сновиддя — згідне з отим, що подоба обличчя в дзеркалі.
4 Can the unclean produce the clean? can the liar ever speak the truth?	4 Що від нечистого може вийти чисте, а від брехливого — що правдиве?
5 Divination, omens and dreams all are unreal; what you already expect, the mind depicts.	5 Ворожба, чарування, сновиддя — речі порожні, це бо маріння вагітної жінки.
6 Unless it be a vision specially sent by the Most High, fix not your heart on it;	6 Коли їх у відвідинах Всевишній не зіслав, — не прихиляйся до них своїм серцем.
7 For dreams have led many astray, and those who believed in them have perished.	7 Бо сновиддя багатьох збили з пантелику, й ті, що на них надіялись, — розчарувалися.
8 The law is fulfilled without fail, and perfect wisdom is found in the mouth of the faithful man.	8 Виконання закону має бути без фальшу: досконала мудрість — лише з уст щирих.
9 A man with training gains wide knowledge; a man of experience speaks sense.	9 Многомандрівна людина — многотна знаннями, і хто дознав досвіду, розумно й розмовляє.
10 One never put to the proof knows little, whereas with travel a man adds to his resourcefulness.	10 Хто не зазнав спокуси, той мало знає, — хто ж бував у подорожах, той набув досвід.
11 I have seen much in my travels, learned more than ever I could say.	11 Багато дечого бачив я під час моїх мандрів, і знаю я більше, ніж можу оповісти.
12 Often I was in danger of death, but by these attainments I was saved.	12 Нераз потрапляв я у смертельну небезпеку, тож рятувався — завдяки досвідові.
13 Lively is the courage of those who fear the LORD, for they put their hope in their savior;	13 Житиме дух отих, що Господа страхаються: надія бо їхня в тому, хто врятувати їх може.
14 He who fears the LORD is never alarmed, never afraid; for the LORD is his hope.	14 Хто Господа страхається, перед іншим страху не має: нічого не боїться, бо він — його надія.
15 Happy the soul that fears the LORD! In whom does he trust, and who is his support?	15 Того душа щаслива, хто Господа страхається, — бо на кого б він зіперся, і хто б його підтримав?
16 The eyes of the LORD are upon those who love him; he is their mighty shield and strong support, A shelter from the heat, a shade from the noonday sun, a guard against stumbling, a help against falling.	16 Господні очі на тих, які його люблять: могутній він їм захист і потужна підтримка; від пустельного вітру сховок, від полуденної спеки захорона; осторога від спотикання й допомога від падіння:
17 He buoys up the spirits, brings a sparkle to the eyes, gives health and life and blessing.	17 він, що душу вгору підносить й очі освітлює, що дає здоров’я, життя й благословення.
18 Tainted his gifts who offers in sacrifice ill-gotten goods! Mock presents from the lawless win not God's favor.	18 Приноси з неправно набутого — все одно, що й глузування: дари беззаконних не можуть бути вгодні.
19 The Most High approves not the gifts of the godless, nor for their many sacrifices does he forgive their sins.	19 Не довподоби Всевишньому нечестивих приноси, і гріхи він прощає — не за численні жертви.
20 Like the man who slays a son in his father's presence is he who offers sacrifice from the possessions of the poor.	20 Мов би сина жертвує на очах у батька, хто приносить жертву з добра нужденних:
21 The bread of charity is life itself for the needy; he who withholds it is a man of blood.	21 таж за нестатків хліб це для вбогих — життя, і хто й того їх позбавляє, той — просто кровожерний.
22 He slays his neighbor who deprives him of his living: he sheds blood who denies the laborer his wages.	22 Вбиває ближнього, хто відбирає його прожиток; позбавляти наймита заробітку — це кров проливати.
23 If one man builds up and another tears down, what do they gain but trouble?	23 Один будує, другий руйнує: яка їм з того користь — невже тільки труд?
24 If one man prays and another curses, whose voice will the LORD hear?	24 Один молиться, другий проклинає — чий же голос Владика вислухає?
25 If a man again touches a corpse after he has bathed, what did he gain by the purification?	25 Хто вмивається, доткнувшись мертвого, а потім до нього знов дотикається, — яку бо зискає користь він із свого миття?
26 So with a man who fasts for his sins, but then goes and commits them again: Who will hear his prayer, and what has he gained by his mortification?	26 Отак і людина, що за гріхи свої постить, а потім вирушає те саме чинити: хто бо вислухає молитву такого, і яка йому користь із того, що понижався?
