1 They therefore sent messengers to him to sue for peace in these words:	1 Тоді вони послали до нього посланців з мирними словами, щоб ті йому сказали:
2 "We, the servants of Nebuchadnezzar the great king, lie prostrate before you; do with us as you will.	2 «Ось ми, слуги Навуходоносора, великого царя, припадаємо перед тобою. Роби з нами, як тобі довподоби.
3 Our dwellings and all our wheat fields, our flocks and herds, and all our encampments are at your disposal; make use of them as you please.	3 Ось наші обійстя, уся наша земля, усі наші пшеничні ниви, дрібний і високорослий скот, і всі огорожі біля наших наметів лежать перед тобою. Користуйсь ними, як тобі завгодно.
4 Our cities and their inhabitants are also at your service; come and deal with them as you see fit."	4 Ось і міста наші та їхні мешканці — твої слуги. Іди, вступай до них по твоїй волі.»
5 After the spokesmen had reached Holofernes and given him this message,	5 Прибули ті мужі до Олоферна й донесли йому ці слова.
6 he went down with his army to the seacoast, and stationed garrisons in the fortified cities; from them he impressed picked troops as auxiliaries.	6 Тоді він зійшов до Примор’я, він сам і все його військо, і поставивши в укріплених містах залогу, навербував з них добірних мужів собі на допомогу.
7 The people of these cities and all the inhabitants of the countryside received him with garlands and dancing to the sound of timbrels.	7 Горожани й всі околишні мешканці прийняли його з вінками, танцями та бубнами.
8 Nevertheless, he devastated their whole territory and cut down their sacred groves, for he had been commissioned to destroy all the gods of the earth, so that every nation might worship Nebuchadnezzar alone, and every people and tribe invoke him as a god.	8 Та він спустошив їхню землю й вирубав їхні священні гаї, згідно з даним йому наказом знищити всіх богів землі, щоб народи покланялись лиш одному Навуходоносорові та щоб усі язики й племена взивали до нього як до бога.
9 At length Holofernes reached Esdraelon in the neighborhood of Dothan, the approach to the main ridge of the Judean mountains;	9 І прибув він навпроти Ездрелону біля Дотаїму, що лежить перед великою Юдейською долиною,
10 he set up his camp between Geba and Scythopolis, and stayed there a whole month to refurbish all the equipment of his army.	10 і, отаборившись між Гебе та містом скитів (Скитополем), пробув там цілий місяць, щоб назбирати всякого харчу для свого війська.
