1 Boast not thyself of to morrow; for thou knowest not what a day may bring forth.	1 Ne te vante pas du lendemain: tu ne sais pas ce que te réserve cette journée.
2 Let another man praise thee, and not thine own mouth; a stranger, and not thine own lips.	2 Un autre peut faire ton éloge, mais pas toi; un autre parlera, mais pas toi.
3 A stone is heavy, and the sand weighty; but a fool's wrath is heavier than them both.	3 La pierre est pesante et le sable fatigant à la marche; combien plus pesant le mauvais vouloir de l’insensé!
4 Wrath is cruel, and anger is outrageous; but who is able to stand before envy?	4 La colère est cruelle, la fureur a ses excès, mais qui peut tenir devant la jalousie?
5 Open rebuke is better than secret love.	5 Mieux vaut une franche réprimande qu’une amitié opportuniste.
6 Faithful are the wounds of a friend; but the kisses of an enemy are deceitful.	6 Un ami loyal dit les quatre vérités; l’ennemi embrasse, mais par hypocrisie.
7 The full soul loatheth an honeycomb; but to the hungry soul every bitter thing is sweet.	7 Avec l’estomac plein, le miel ne dit plus rien; quand on a faim, ce qui est amer paraît doux.
8 As a bird that wandereth from her nest, so is a man that wandereth from his place.	8 Un oiseau qui erre loin de son nid, tel est l’homme qui erre loin de chez lui.
9 Ointment and perfume rejoice the heart: so doth the sweetness of a man's friend by hearty counsel.	9 L’huile et les parfums réjouissent le cœur, la douceur de l’amitié réconforte l’âme.
10 Thine own friend, and thy father's friend, forsake not; neither go into thy brother's house in the day of thy calamity: for better is a neighbour that is near than a brother far off.	10 Ne délaisse pas ton ami, ni l’ami de ton père; un ami tout près vaut mieux qu’un frère au loin.
11 My son, be wise, and make my heart glad, that I may answer him that reproacheth me.	11 Mon fils, deviens sage et tu feras ma joie; j’aurai ainsi de quoi répondre à celui qui m’insulte.
12 A prudent man foreseeth the evil, and hideth himself; but the simple pass on, and are punished.	12 L’homme avisé voit venir le danger et se met à l’abri; les niais vont de l’avant et ils le paient.
13 Take his garment that is surety for a stranger, and take a pledge of him for a strange woman.	13 Prends-lui son manteau, puisqu’il s’est porté garant pour un étranger: fais-le payer pour l’autre!
14 He that blesseth his friend with a loud voice, rising early in the morning, it shall be counted a curse to him.	14 Si tu souhaites du bien à ton voisin en le criant très fort, on pensera que tu lui veux du mal.
15 A continual dropping in a very rainy day and a contentious woman are alike.	15 La femme querelleuse est comme une gouttière qui coule sans fin un jour de pluie;
16 Whosoever hideth her hideth the wind, and the ointment of his right hand, which bewrayeth itself.	16 La retenir? ce serait saisir du vent, ou prendre l’huile avec la main.
17 Iron sharpeneth iron; so a man sharpeneth the countenance of his friend.	17 Le fer aiguise le fer: on s’affine au contact de son prochain.
18 Whoso keepeth the fig tree shall eat the fruit thereof: so he that waiteth on his master shall be honoured.	18 Qui cultive le figuier mangera de son fruit, qui prend soin de son maître aura de l’avancement.
19 As in water face answereth to face, so the heart of man to man.	19 Les visages ne se ressemblent pas, et les cœurs pas davantage.
20 Hell and destruction are never full; so the eyes of man are never satisfied.	20 La Mort et le monde d’en bas ne sont jamais rassasiés: de même le désir humain.
21 As the fining pot for silver, and the furnace for gold; so is a man to his praise.	21 On éprouve au feu l’argent, on met l’or au creuset: à chacun d’éprouver ceux qui le flattent.
22 Though thou shouldest bray a fool in a mortar among wheat with a pestle, yet will not his foolishness depart from him.	22 Tu pourrais broyer l’insensé dans un mortier, que sa sottise ne le lâcherait pas.
23 Be thou diligent to know the state of thy flocks, and look well to thy herds.	23 Connais bien l’état de ton bétail, prends soin de ton troupeau;
24 For riches are not for ever: and doth the crown endure to every generation?	24 car la richesse n’est pas éternelle, et les réserves ne durent pas des générations.
25 The hay appeareth, and the tender grass sheweth itself, and herbs of the mountains are gathered.	25 Lorsque l’herbe est fauchée et que pousse le regain, ramasse du foin dans la montagne;
26 The lambs are for thy clothing, and the goats are the price of the field.	26 tu auras des agneaux pour te vêtir, des boucs pour payer ton champ,
27 And thou shalt have goats' milk enough for thy food, for the food of thy household, and for the maintenance for thy maidens.	27 du lait de chèvre, suffisamment pour te nourrir et faire vivre tes servantes.
