1 Todo el que cree que Jesús es el Cristo ha nacido de Dios; y todo el que ama a aquel que da el ser ama también al que ha nacido de él.	1 Everyone who believes that Jesus is the Christ is begotten by God, and everyone who loves the father loves (also) the one begotten by him.
2 En esto conocemos que amamos a los hijos de Dios: si amamos a Dios y cumplimos sus mandamientos.	2 In this way we know that we love the children of God when we love God and obey his commandments.
3 Pues en esto consiste el amor a Dios: en que guardemos sus mandamientos. Y sus mandamientos no son pesados,	3 For the love of God is this, that we keep his commandments. And his commandments are not burdensome,
4 pues todo lo que ha nacido de Dios vence al mundo. Y lo que ha conseguido la victoria sobre el mundo es nuestra fe.	4 for whoever is begotten by God conquers the world. And the victory that conquers the world is our faith.
5 Pues, ¿quien es el que vence al mundo sino el que cree que Jesús es el Hijo de Dios?	5 Who (indeed) is the victor over the world but the one who believes that Jesus is the Son of God?
6 Este es el que vino por el agua y por la sangre: Jesucristo; no solamente en el agua, sino en el agua y en la sangre. Y el Espíritu es el que da testimonio, porque el Espíritu es la Verdad.	6 This is the one who came through water and blood, Jesus Christ, not by water alone, but by water and blood. The Spirit is the one that testifies, and the Spirit is truth.
7 Pues tres son los que dan testimonio:	7 So there are three that testify,
8 el Espíritu, el agua y la sangre, y los tres convienen en lo mismo.	8 the Spirit, the water, and the blood, and the three are of one accord.
9 Si aceptamos el testimonio de los hombres, mayor es el testimonio de Dios, pues este es el testimonio de Dios, que ha testimoniado acerca de su Hijo.	9 If we accept human testimony, the testimony of God is surely greater. Now the testimony of God is this, that he has testified on behalf of his Son.
10 Quien cree en el Hijo de Dios tiene el testimonio en sí mismo. Quien no cree a Dios le hace mentiroso, porque no ha creído en el testimonio que Dios ha dado acerca de su Hijo.	10 Whoever believes in the Son of God has this testimony within himself. Whoever does not believe God has made him a liar by not believing the testimony God has given about his Son.
11 Y este es el testimonio: que Dios nos ha dado vida eterna y esta vida está en su Hijo.	11 And this is the testimony: God gave us eternal life, and this life is in his Son.
12 Quien tiene al Hijo, tiene la vida; quien no tiene al Hijo, no tiene la vida.	12 Whoever possesses the Son has life; whoever does not possess the Son of God does not have life.
13 Os he escrito estas cosas a los que creéis en el nombre del Hijo de Dios, para que os deis cuenta de que tenéis vida eterna.	13 I write these things to you so that you may know that you have eternal life, you who believe in the name of the Son of God.
14 En esto está la confianza que tenemos en él: en que si le pedimos algo según su voluntad, nos escucha.	14 And we have this confidence in him, that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us.
15 Y si sabemos que nos escucha en lo que le pedimos, sabemos que tenemos conseguido lo que hayamos pedido.	15 And if we know that he hears us in regard to whatever we ask, we know that what we have asked him for is ours.
16 Si alguno ve que su hermano comete un pecado que no es de muerte, pida y le dará vida - a los que cometan pecados que no son de muerte pues hay un pecado que es de muerte, por el cual no digo que pida -.	16 If anyone sees his brother sinning, if the sin is not deadly, he should pray to God and he will give him life. This is only for those whose sin is not deadly. There is such a thing as deadly sin, about which I do not say that you should pray.
17 Toda iniquidad es pecado, pero hay pecado que no es de muerte.	17 All wrongdoing is sin, but there is sin that is not deadly.
18 Sabemos que todo el que ha nacido de Dios no peca, sino que el Engendrado de Dios le guarda y el Maligno no llega a tocarle.	18 We know that no one begotten by God sins; but the one begotten by God he protects, and the evil one cannot touch him.
19 Sabemos que somos de Dios y que el mundo entero yace en poder del Maligno.	19 We know that we belong to God, and the whole world is under the power of the evil one.
20 Pero sabemos que el Hijo de Dios ha venido y nos ha dado inteligencia para que conozcamos al Verdadero. Nosotros estamos en el Verdadero, en su Hijo Jesucristo. Este es el Dios verdadero y la Vida eterna.	20 We also know that the Son of God has come and has given us discernment to know the one who is true. And we are in the one who is true, in his Son Jesus Christ. He is the true God and eternal life.
21 Hijos míos, guardaos de los ídolos...	21 Children, be on your guard against idols.
