NEW JERUSALEMBIBBIA
The men of Kiriath-Jearim came and, taking up the ark of Yahweh, brought it to the house of Abinadabon the hil , and consecrated his son Eleazar to guard the ark of Yahweh.1 Gli abitanti di Kiriat-Iearìm scesero a prendere l'arca del Signore e la introdussero nella casa di Abinadàb, sulla collina; consacrarono suo figlio Eleazaro perché custodisse l'arca del Signore.
From the day when the ark was instal ed at Kiriath-Jearim, a long time went by -- twenty years -- andthe whole House of Israel longed for Yahweh.2 Erano trascorsi molti giorni da quando era stata collocata l'arca a Kiriat-Iearìm, erano passati venti anni, quando tutta la casa d'Israele alzò grida di lamento verso il Signore.
Samuel then spoke as follows to the whole House of Israel, 'If you are returning to Yahweh with al yourheart, banish the foreign gods and Astartes which you now have, and set your heart on Yahweh and serve himalone; and he will deliver you from the power of the Philistines.'3 Allora Samuele si rivolse a tutta la casa d'Israele dicendo: "Se è proprio di tutto cuore che voi tornate al Signore, eliminate da voi tutti gli dèi stranieri e le Astàrti; fate in modo che il vostro cuore sia indirizzato al Signore e servite lui, lui solo, ed egli vi libererà dalla mano dei Filistei".
And the Israelites banished the Baals and Astartes and served Yahweh alone.4 Subito gli Israeliti eliminarono i Baal e le Astàrti e servirono solo il Signore.
Samuel then said, 'Muster al Israel at Mizpah and I shal plead with Yahweh for you.'5 Disse poi Samuele: "Radunate tutto Israele a Mizpa, perché voglio pregare il Signore per voi".
So they mustered at Mizpah and drew water and poured it out before Yahweh. They fasted that dayand declared, 'We have sinned against Yahweh.' And Samuel was judge over the Israelites at Mizpah.6 Si radunarono pertanto in Mizpa, attinsero acqua, la sparsero davanti al Signore e digiunarono in quel giorno, dicendo: "Abbiamo peccato contro il Signore!". A Mizpa Samuele fu giudice degli Israeliti.
When the Philistines heard that the Israelites had mustered at Mizpah, the Philistine chiefs marched onIsrael; and when the Israelites heard this, they were afraid of the Philistines.7 Udirono anche i Filistei che gli Israeliti si erano radunati a Mizpa e i capi filistei mossero contro Israele. Quando gli Israeliti lo seppero, ebbero paura dei Filistei.
They said to Samuel, 'Do not stop cal ing on Yahweh our God to rescue us from the power of thePhilistines.'8 Dissero allora gli Israeliti a Samuele: "Non cessar di supplicare per noi il Signore Dio nostro perché ci liberi dalle mani dei Filistei".
Samuel took a sucking lamb and presented it as a burnt offering to Yahweh, and he cal ed on Yahwehon behalf of Israel and Yahweh heard him.9 Samuele prese un agnello da latte e lo offrì tutto intero in olocausto al Signore; lo stesso Samuele alzò grida al Signore per Israele e il Signore lo esaudì.
While Samuel was in the act of presenting burnt offering, the Philistines joined battle with Israel, butthat day Yahweh thundered violently over the Philistines, threw them into panic and Israel defeated them.10 Mentre Samuele offriva l'olocausto, i Filistei si accostarono in ordine di battaglia a Israele; ma in quel giorno il Signore tuonò con voce potente contro i Filistei, li disperse ed essi furono sconfitti davanti a Israele.
The men of Israel sal ied out from Mizpah in pursuit of the Philistines and beat them al the way tobelow Beth-Car.11 Gli Israeliti uscirono da Mizpa per inseguire i Filistei e li batterono fin sotto Bet-Car.
Samuel then took a stone and erected it between Mizpah and the Tooth, and gave it the nameEbenezer, saying, 'Yahweh helped us as far as this.'12 Samuele prese allora una pietra e la pose tra Mizpa e Iesana e la chiamò Eben-Ezer, dicendo: "Fin qui ci ha soccorso il Signore".
So the Philistines were humbled and no longer came into Israelite territory; Yahweh oppressed thePhilistines throughout the life of Samuel.13 Così i Filistei furono umiliati e non invasero più il territorio d'Israele: la mano del Signore fu contro i Filistei per tutto il periodo di Samuele.
The towns which the Philistines had taken from Israel were given back to Israel, from Ekron al theway to Gath, and Israel freed their territory from the power of the Philistines.
Samuel was judge over Israel throughout his life.15 Samuele fu giudice d'Israele per tutto il tempo della sua vita.
Each year he went on circuit through Bethel and Gilgal and Mizpah and judged Israel in al theseplaces.16 Ogni anno egli compiva il giro di Bètel, Gàlgala e Mizpa, esercitando l'ufficio di giudice d'Israele in tutte queste località.
He would then return to Ramah, since his home was there; there too he judged Israel. And there hebuilt an altar to Yahweh.17 Poi ritornava a Rama, perché là era la sua casa e anche là giudicava Israele. In quel luogo costruì anche un altare al Signore.
