NEW JERUSALEMBIBBIA
The Israelites then al turned out and, as one man, the entire community from Dan to Beersheba, including Gilead, assembled in Yahweh's presence at Mizpah.1 Allora tutti gli Israeliti uscirono, da Dan fino a Bersabea e al paese di Gàlaad, e il popolo si radunò come un sol uomo dinanzi al Signore, a Mizpa.
The leaders of the entire people, of al the tribes of Israel, were present at this assembly of God'speople, four hundred thousand trained infantry.2 I capi di tutto il popolo e tutte le tribù d'Israele si presentarono all'assemblea del popolo di Dio, in numero di quattrocentomila fanti, che maneggiavano la spada.
The Benjaminites heard that the Israelites had gone up to Mizpah. The Israelites then said, 'Tel ushow this crime was committed.'3 I figli di Beniamino vennero a sapere che gli Israeliti erano venuti a Mizpa. Gli Israeliti dissero: "Parlate! Com'è avvenuta questa scelleratezza?".
The Levite, husband of the murdered woman, spoke in reply and said,4 Allora il levita, il marito della donna che era stata uccisa, rispose: "Io ero giunto con la mia concubina a Gàbaa di Beniamino per passarvi la notte.
'The men of Gibeah ganged up against me and, during the night, surrounded the house where I waslodging. They intended to murder me. They raped my concubine to death.5 Ma gli abitanti di Gàbaa insorsero contro di me e circondarono di notte la casa dove stavo; volevano uccidere me; quanto alla mia concubina le usarono violenza fino al punto che ne morì.
I then took my concubine, cut her up and sent her throughout the entire territory of the heritage ofIsrael, since these men had committed a shameful act, an infamy, in Israel.6 Io presi la mia concubina, la feci a pezzi e li mandai per tutto il territorio della nazione d'Israele, perché costoro hanno commesso un delitto e un'infamia in Israele.
Now, all you Israelites, discuss the matter and give your decision here and now.'7 Eccovi qui tutti, Israeliti; consultatevi e decidete qui stesso".
The whole people stood up as one man and said, 'None of us wil go home, none of us will go back tohis house!8 Tutto il popolo si alzò insieme gridando: "Nessuno di noi tornerà alla tenda, nessuno di noi rientrerà a casa.
And this is what we are now going to do to Gibeah. We shal draw lots9 Ora ecco quanto faremo a Gàbaa: tireremo a sorte
and, throughout the tribes of Israel, select ten men out of a hundred, a hundred out of a thousand anda thousand out of ten thousand to col ect food for the people, so that, on their arrival, the latter may treat Gibeahin Benjamin as this infamy perpetrated in Israel deserves.'10 e prenderemo in tutte le tribù d'Israele dieci uomini su cento, cento su mille e mille su diecimila, i quali andranno a cercare viveri per il popolo, per quelli che andranno a punire Gàbaa di Beniamino, come merita l'infamia che ha commessa in Israele".
Thus, as one man, al the men of Israel mustered against the town.11 Così tutti gli Israeliti si radunarono contro quella città, uniti come un sol uomo.
The tribes of Israel sent messengers throughout the tribe of Benjamin to say, 'What is this crimewhich has been committed in your territory?12 Le tribù d'Israele mandarono uomini in tutta la tribù di Beniamino a dire: "Quale delitto è stato commesso in mezzo a voi?
Now, give up these men, these scoundrels, living in Gibeah, so that we can put them to death andwipe out this evil from Israel.' The Benjaminites, however, would not listen to their brother Israelites.13 Dunque consegnateci quegli uomini iniqui di Gàbaa, perché li uccidiamo e cancelliamo il male da Israele". Ma i figli di Beniamino non vollero ascoltare la voce dei loro fratelli, gli Israeliti.
The Benjaminites left their towns and mustered at Gibeah to fight the Israelites.14 I figli di Beniamino uscirono dalle loro città e si radunarono a Gàbaa per combattere contro gli Israeliti.
At the time, a count was made of the Benjaminites from the various towns: there were twenty-sixthousand swordsmen; and the count excluded the inhabitants of Gibeah.15 Si passarono in rassegna i figli di Beniamino usciti dalle città: formavano un totale di ventiseimila uomini che maneggiavano la spada, senza contare gli abitanti di Gàbaa.
In this great army there were seven hundred first-rate left-handers, every man of whom could sling astone at a hair and not miss it.16 Fra tutta questa gente c'erano settecento uomini scelti, che erano ambidestri. Tutti costoro erano capaci di colpire con la fionda un capello, senza fallire il colpo.
A count was also held of the men of Israel, excluding Benjamin: there were four hundred thousandmen, al experienced swordsmen.17 Si fece pure la rassegna degli Israeliti, non compresi quelli di Beniamino, ed erano quattrocentomila uomini in grado di maneggiare la spada, tutti guerrieri.
They moved off, up to Bethel, to consult God. The Israelites put the question, 'Which of us is to gofirst into battle against the Benjaminites?' And Yahweh replied, 'Judah is to go first.'18 Gli Israeliti si mossero, vennero a Betel e consultarono Dio, dicendo: "Chi di noi andrà per primo a combattere contro i figli di Beniamino?". Il Signore rispose: "Giuda andrà per primo".
In the morning, the Israelites moved off and pitched their camp over against Gibeah.19 Il mattino dopo, gli Israeliti si mossero e si accamparono presso Gàbaa.
The men of Israel advanced to do battle with Benjamin; they drew up their battle line in front ofGibeah.20 Gli Israeliti uscirono per combattere contro Beniamino e si disposero in ordine di battaglia contro di loro, presso Gàbaa.
But the Benjaminites sal ied out from Gibeah and that day massacred twenty-two thousand Israelites.21 Allora i figli di Beniamino uscirono e in quel giorno sterminarono ventiduemila Israeliti,
The army of the men of Israel then took fresh heart and again drew up their battle line in the sameplace as the day before.22 ma il popolo, gli Israeliti, si rinfrancarono e tornarono a schierarsi in battaglia dove si erano schierati il primo giorno.
The Israelites went and wept before Yahweh until evening; they then consulted Yahweh; they asked,'Shal we join battle again with the sons of our brother Benjamin?' Yahweh replied, 'March against him!'23 Gli Israeliti andarono a piangere davanti al Signore fino alla sera e consultarono il Signore, dicendo: "Devo continuare a combattere contro Beniamino mio fratello?". Il Signore rispose: "Andate contro di loro".
This second day, the Israelites advanced against the Benjaminites,24 Gli Israeliti vennero a battaglia con i figli di Beniamino una seconda volta.
and, this second day, Benjamin sallied out from Gibeah to meet them and massacred anothereighteen thousand Israelites, al experienced swordsmen.25 I Beniaminiti una seconda volta uscirono da Gàbaa contro di loro e sterminarono altri diciottomila uomini degli Israeliti, tutti atti a maneggiar la spada.
Then al the Israelites and the whole people went off to Bethel; they wept and sat in Yahweh'spresence; they fasted all day till the evening and presented burnt offerings and communion sacrifices beforeYahweh.26 Allora tutti gli Israeliti e tutto il popolo andarono a Betel, piansero e rimasero davanti al Signore e digiunarono quel giorno fino alla sera e offrirono olocausti e sacrifici di comunione davanti al Signore.
The Israelites then consulted Yahweh. In those days, the ark of the covenant of God was there,27 Gli Israeliti consultarono il Signore - l'arca dell'alleanza di Dio in quel tempo era là
and Phinehas son of Eleazer, son of Aaron was its minister at the time. They said, 'Ought I to go intobattle against the sons of my brother Benjamin again, or should I stop?' Yahweh replied, 'March! For tomorrow Ishall deliver him into your hands.'28 e Pincas, figlio di Eleazaro, figlio di Aronne, prestava servizio davanti a essa in quel tempo - e dissero: "Devo continuare ancora a uscire in battaglia contro Beniamino mio fratello o devo cessare?". Il Signore rispose: "Andate, perché domani ve li metterò nelle mani".
Israel then positioned troops in ambush al round Gibeah.29 Israele tese quindi un agguato intorno a Gàbaa.
On the third day the Israelites marched against the Benjaminites and, as before, drew up their line infront of Gibeah.30 Gli Israeliti andarono il terzo giorno contro i figli di Beniamino e si disposero a battaglia presso Gàbaa come le altre volte.
The Benjaminites sal ied out to engage the people and let themselves be drawn away from the town.As before, they began by kil ing those of the people who were on the roads, one of which runs up to Bethel, andthe other to Gibeah through open country: some thirty men of Israel.31 I figli di Beniamino fecero una sortita contro il popolo, si lasciarono attirare lontano dalla città e cominciarono a colpire e ad uccidere, come le altre volte, alcuni del popolo d'Israele, lungo le strade che portano a Betel e a Gàbaon, in aperta campagna: ne uccisero circa trenta.
The Benjaminites thought, 'We have beaten them, as we did the first time,' but the Israelites haddecided, 'We shal run away and draw them away from the town along the roads.'32 Già i figli di Beniamino pensavano: "Eccoli sconfitti davanti a noi come la prima volta". Ma gli Israeliti dissero: "Fuggiamo e attiriamoli dalla città sulle strade!".
All the Israelites then retreated and reformed at Baal-Tamar, while the Israelite troops in ambushsurged from their positions to the west of Gibeah.33 Tutti gli Israeliti abbandonarono la loro posizione e si disposero a battaglia a Baal-Tamar, mentre quelli di Israele che erano in agguato sbucavano dal luogo dove si trovavano, a occidente di Gàbaa.
Ten thousand picked men, chosen from the whole of Israel, launched their attack on Gibeah. Thebattle was fierce; and the others knew nothing of the disaster impending.34 Diecimila uomini scelti in tutto Israele giunsero davanti a Gàbaa. Il combattimento fu aspro: quelli non si accorgevano del disastro che stava per colpirli.
Yahweh defeated Benjamin before Israel and that day the Israelites kil ed twenty-five thousand onehundred men of Benjamin, al of them trained swordsmen.35 Il Signore sconfisse Beniamino davanti ad Israele; gli Israeliti uccisero in quel giorno venticinquemila e cento uomini di Beniamino, tutti atti a maneggiare la spada.
The Benjaminites saw that they were beaten. The Israelites had given ground to Benjamin, since theywere relying on the ambush which they had positioned close to Gibeah.36 I figli di Beniamino si accorsero d'essere sconfitti. Gli Israeliti avevano ceduto terreno a Beniamino, perché confidavano nell'agguato che avevano teso presso Gàbaa.
The troops in ambush threw themselves against Gibeah at top speed; fanning out, they put the wholetown to the sword.37 Quelli che stavano in agguato infatti si gettarono d'improvviso contro Gàbaa e, fattavi irruzione, passarono a fil di spada l'intera città.
Now it had been agreed between the Israelites and those of the ambush that the latter should raise asmoke signal from the town,38 C'era un segnale convenuto fra gli Israeliti e quelli dell'imboscata: questi dovevano fare salire dalla città una colonna di fumo.
whereupon the Israelites in the thick of the battle would turn about. Benjamin began by kil ing some ofthe Israelites, about thirty men, and thought, 'We have certainly beaten them, as we did in the first battle.'39 Gli Israeliti avevano dunque voltato le spalle nel combattimento e gli uomini di Beniamino avevano cominciato a colpire e uccidere circa trenta uomini d'Israele. Essi dicevano: "Ormai essi sono sconfitti davanti a noi, come nella prima battaglia!".
But the signal, a column of smoke, began to rise from the town, and the Benjaminites looking backsaw the whole town going up in flames to the sky.40 Ma quando il segnale, la colonna di fumo, cominciò ad alzarsi dalla città, quelli di Beniamino si voltarono indietro ed ecco tutta la città saliva in fiamme verso il cielo.
The Israelites then turned about, and the Benjaminites were seized with terror, for they saw thatdisaster had struck them.41 Allora gli Israeliti tornarono indietro e gli uomini di Beniamino furono presi dal terrore, vedendo il disastro piombare loro addosso.
They broke before the Israelite onslaught and made for the desert, but the fighters pressed themhard, while the others coming out of the town took and slaughtered them from the rear.42 Voltarono le spalle davanti agli Israeliti e presero la via del deserto; ma i combattenti li incalzavano e quelli che venivano dalla città piombavano in mezzo a loro massacrandoli.
They hemmed in the Benjaminites, pursued them relentlessly, crushing them opposite Gibeah on theeast.43 Circondarono i Beniaminiti, li inseguirono senza tregua, li incalzarono fino di fronte a Gàbaa dal lato di oriente.
Of Benjamin, eighteen thousand men fel , al of them brave men.44 Caddero dei Beniaminiti diciottomila uomini, tutti valorosi.
They then turned tail and fled into the desert, towards the Rock of Rimmon. Five thousand of themwere picked off on the roads, and the rest were relentlessly pursued as far as Gideon, two thousand of thembeing kil ed.45 I superstiti voltarono le spalle e fuggirono verso il deserto, in direzione della roccia di Rimmon e gli Israeliti ne rastrellarono per le strade cinquemila, li incalzarono fino a Ghideom e ne colpirono altri duemila.
The total number of Benjaminites who fel that day was twenty-five thousand swordsmen, al of thembrave men.46 Così il numero totale dei Beniaminiti, che caddero quel giorno, fu di venticinquemila, atti a maneggiare la spada, tutta gente di valore.
Six hundred men, however, turned tail and escaped into the desert, to the Rock of Rimmon, andthere they stayed for four months.47 Seicento uomini, che avevano voltato le spalle ed erano fuggiti verso il deserto, raggiunsero la roccia di Rimmon, rimasero alla roccia di Rimmon quattro mesi.
The men of Israel then went back to the Benjaminites, and put them to the sword-people, livestockand everything else that came their way in the town. And they fired all the towns involved.48 Intanto gli Israeliti tornarono contro i figli di Beniamino, passarono a fil di spada nella città uomini e bestiame e quanto trovarono, e diedero alle fiamme anche tutte le città che incontrarono.
