NEW JERUSALEMBIBBIA
The Angel of Yahweh went up from Gilgal to Bethel and said, 'I have brought you out of Egypt and ledyou into this country, which I promised on oath to your ancestors. I said, "I shal never break my covenant withyou.1 Ora l'angelo del Signore salì da Gàlgala a Bochim e disse: "Io vi ho fatti uscire dall'Egitto e vi ho condotti nel paese, che avevo giurato ai vostri padri di darvi. Avevo anche detto: Non romperò mai la mia alleanza con voi;
You for your part must make no covenant with the inhabitants of this country; you wil destroy theiraltars." But you have not listened to my voice. What is the reason for this?2 voi non farete alleanza con gli abitanti di questo paese; distruggerete i loro altari. Ma voi non avete obbedito alla mia voce. Perché avete fatto questo?
Very wel , I now say this, "I am not going to drive these nations out before you. They will become youroppressors, and their gods wil be a snare for you."3 Perciò anch'io dico: non li scaccerò dinanzi a voi; ma essi vi staranno ai fianchi e i loro dèi saranno per voi un inciampo".
When the angel of Yahweh had spoken these words to al the Israelites, the people began to wail at thetop of their voices.4 Appena l'angelo del Signore disse queste parole a tutti gli Israeliti, il popolo alzò la voce e pianse.
And they called the place Bochim, and offered sacrifices to Yahweh there.5 Chiamarono quel luogo Bochim e vi offrirono sacrifici al Signore.
Joshua having dismissed the people, the Israelites then went away, each one to his own heritage, tooccupy the country.6 Quando Giosuè ebbe congedato il popolo, gli Israeliti se ne andarono, ciascuno nel suo territorio, a prendere in possesso il paese.
The people served Yahweh throughout the lifetime of Joshua and throughout the lifetime of those elderswho outlived Joshua and had known al the great deeds which Yahweh had done for the sake of Israel.7 Il popolo servì il Signore durante tutta la vita degli anziani che sopravvissero a Giosuè e che avevano visto tutte le grandi opere, che il Signore aveva fatte in favore d'Israele.
Joshua son of Nun, servant of Yahweh, was a hundred and ten years old when he died.8 Poi Giosuè, figlio di Nun, servo del Signore, morì a centodieci anni
He was buried on the estate which he had received as his heritage at Timnath-Heres in the highlands ofEphraim, north of Mount Gaash.9 e fu sepolto nel territorio, che gli era toccato a Timnat-Cheres sulle montagne di Efraim, a settentrione del monte Gaas.
And when that whole generation had been gathered to its ancestors, another generation fol owed itwhich knew neither Yahweh nor the deeds which he had done for the sake of Israel.10 Anche tutta quella generazione fu riunita ai suoi padri; dopo di essa ne sorse un'altra, che non conosceva il Signore, né le opere che aveva compiute in favore d'Israele.
The Israelites then did what is evil in Yahweh's eyes and served the Baals.11 Gli Israeliti fecero ciò che è male agli occhi del Signore e servirono i Baal;
They deserted Yahweh, God of their ancestors, who had brought them out of Egypt, and they followedother gods, from those of the surrounding peoples. They bowed down to these; they provoked Yahweh;12 abbandonarono il Signore, Dio dei loro padri, che li aveva fatti uscire dal paese d'Egitto, e seguirono altri dèi di quei popoli che avevano intorno: si prostrarono davanti a loro e provocarono il Signore,
they deserted Yahweh to serve Baal and Astartes.13 abbandonarono il Signore e servirono Baal e Astarte.
Then Yahweh's anger grew hot against Israel. He handed them over to pil agers who plundered them;he delivered them to the enemies surrounding them, and they were no longer able to resist their enemies.14 Allora si accese l'ira del Signore contro Israele e li mise in mano a razziatori, che li depredarono; li vendette ai nemici che stavano loro intorno ed essi non potevano più tener testa ai nemici.
Whenever they mounted an expedition, Yahweh's hand was there to foil them, as Yahweh had toldthem and as Yahweh had sworn to them, so that they were in dire distress.15 Dovunque uscivano in campo, la mano del Signore era contro di loro, come il Signore aveva detto, come il Signore aveva loro giurato: furono ridotti all'estremo.
Yahweh then appointed them judges, who rescued them from the hands of their plunderers.16 Allora il Signore fece sorgere dei giudici, che li liberavano dalle mani di quelli che li spogliavano.
But even to their judges they refused to listen. They prostituted themselves to other gods and boweddown before these. Very quickly they left the path which their ancestors had trodden in obedience to the ordersof Yahweh; they did not fol ow their example.17 Ma neppure ai loro giudici davano ascolto, anzi si prostituivano ad altri dèi e si prostravano davanti a loro. Abbandonarono ben presto la via battuta dai loro padri, i quali avevano obbedito ai comandi del Signore: essi non fecero così.
When Yahweh appointed judges for them, Yahweh was with the judge and rescued them from thehands of their enemies as long as the judge lived, since Yahweh relented at their groans under their persecutorsand oppressors.18 Quando il Signore suscitava loro dei giudici, il Signore era con il giudice e li liberava dalla mano dei loro nemici durante tutta la vita del giudice; perché il Signore si lasciava commuovere dai loro gemiti sotto il giogo dei loro oppressori.
But once the judge was dead, they relapsed into even worse corruption than their ancestors. Theyfol owed other gods; they served them and bowed before them and would not give up the practices and stubbornways of their ancestors at al .19 Ma quando il giudice moriva, tornavano a corrompersi più dei loro padri, seguendo altri dèi per servirli e prostrarsi davanti a loro, non desistendo dalle loro pratiche e dalla loro condotta ostinata.
Yahweh's anger then blazed out against Israel, and he said, 'Since this people has broken thecovenant which I laid down for their ancestors, since they have not listened to my voice,20 Perciò l'ira del Signore si accese contro Israele e disse: "Poiché questa nazione ha violato l'alleanza che avevo stabilita con i loro padri e non hanno obbedito alla mia voce,
in future I shal not drive before them any one of those nations which Joshua left when he died,21 nemmeno io scaccerò più dinanzi a loro nessuno dei popoli, che Giosuè lasciò quando morì.
in order, by means of them, to put Israel to the test, to see whether or not they would tread the paths ofYahweh as once their ancestors had trodden them.'22 Così, per mezzo loro, metterò alla prova Israele, per vedere se cammineranno o no sulla via del Signore, come fecero i loro padri".
Hence, Yahweh allowed these nations to remain; he did not hurry to drive them out, and did not deliverthem into the hands of Joshua.23 Il Signore lasciò quelle nazioni senza affrettarsi a scacciarle e non le mise nelle mani di Giosuè.
