NEW JERUSALEMBIBBIA
In those days there was no king in Israel. Now in those days the tribe of Dan was in search of aterritory to live in, for until then no territory had fallen to them among the tribes of Israel.1 In quel tempo non c'era un re in Israele e la tribù dei Daniti cercava un territorio per stabilirvisi, perché fino a quei giorni non le era toccata nessuna eredità fra le tribù d'Israele.
From their clan the Danites sent five brave men from Zorah and Eshtaol to reconnoitre the country andexplore it. They said to them, 'Go and explore the country.'
When they were near Micah's house, they recognised the voice of the young Levite and, going nearer, said to him, 'Who brought you here? What are you doing here? What is keeping you here?'3 Mentre erano presso la casa di Mica, riconobbero la voce del giovane levita; avvicinatisi, gli chiesero: "Chi ti ha condotto qua? Che fai in questo luogo? Che hai tu qui?".
He replied, 'Micah has made certain arrangements with me. He pays me a wage and I act as hispriest.'4 Rispose loro: "Mica mi ha fatto così e così, mi dà un salario e io gli faccio da sacerdote".
They replied, 'Then consult God, so that we may know whether the journey we are on wil lead tosuccess.'5 Gli dissero: "Consulta Dio, perché possiamo sapere se il viaggio che abbiamo intrapreso avrà buon esito".
The priest replied, 'Go in peace; Yahweh is watching over your journey.'6 Il sacerdote rispose loro: "Andate in pace, il viaggio che fate è sotto lo sguardo del Signore".
The five men then left and, arriving at Laish, saw that the people living there had an untroubledexistence, according to the customs of the Sidonians, peaceful and trusting, that there was no lack or shortageof any sort in the territory, that they were a long way away from the Sidonians and that they had no contact withthe Aramaeans.7 I cinque uomini continuarono il viaggio e arrivarono a Lais e videro che il popolo, che vi abitava, viveva in sicurezza secondo i costumi di quelli di Sidòne, tranquillo e fidente; non c'era nel paese chi, usurpando il potere, facesse qualcosa di offensivo; erano lontani da quelli di Sidòne e non avevano relazione con nessuno.
They then went back to their brothers at Zorah and Eshtaol and, when the latter asked them, 'Whathave you to report?'8 Poi tornarono ai loro fratelli a Zorea e a Estaol e i fratelli chiesero loro: "Che notizie portate?".
they said, 'Up! we must go against them, since we have looked at the country and it is excellent, though you take no action! Waste no time in setting out and taking possession of the country.9 Quelli risposero: "Alziamoci e andiamo contro quella gente, poiché abbiamo visto il paese ed è ottimo. E voi rimanete inattivi? Non indugiate a partire per andare a prendere in possesso il paese.
When you get there, you wil find a trusting people. The country is wide, and God has put it at yourmercy. It is a place where there is no lack of anything on earth.'10 Quando arriverete là, troverete un popolo che non sospetta di nulla.
From these places, consequently, from the clan of Danites at Zorah and Eshtaol, six hundred men setout equipped for war.11 Allora seicento uomini della tribù dei Daniti partirono da Zorea e da Estaol, ben armati.
They went up and camped at Kiriath-Jearim in Judah; and for this reason the place is stil cal ed theCamp of Dan today. It lies to the west of Kiriath-Jearim.12 Andarono e si accamparono a Kiriat-Iearim, in Giuda; perciò il luogo, che è a occidente di Kiriat-Iearim, fu chiamato e si chiama fino ad oggi l'accampamento di Dan.
From there they entered the highlands of Ephraim and came to Micah's house.13 Di là passarono sulle montagne di Efraim e giunsero alla casa di Mica.
The five men who had been to reconnoitre the country then spoke to their brothers. 'Do you know',they said, 'that in these houses there is an ephod, some domestic images, a carved statue and an idol cast inmetal? So now work out what you have got to do!'14 I cinque uomini che erano andati a esplorare il paese di Lais dissero ai loro fratelli: "Sapete che in queste case c'è un 'efod', ci sono i 'terafim', una statua scolpita e una statua di getto? Sappiate ora quello che dovete fare".
So, turning off the road, they went to the young Levite's dwelling, to Micah's house, and greeted himpeaceful y.15 Quelli si diressero da quella parte, giunsero alla casa del giovane levita, cioè alla casa di Mica, e lo salutarono.
While the six hundred men of the Danites, equipped for war, stood at the threshold of the gate,16 Mentre i seicento uomini dei Daniti, muniti delle loro armi, stavano davanti alla porta,
the five who had been to reconnoitre the country went on into the house and took the carved statue, the ephod, the domestic images and the idol cast in metal; meanwhile the priest remained at the threshold of thegate with the six hundred men equipped for war.17 e i cinque uomini che erano andati a esplorare il paese vennero, entrarono in casa, presero la statua scolpita, l''efod', i 'terafim' e la statua di getto.
These men, having entered Micah's house, took the carved statue, the ephod, the domestic imagesand the idol cast in metal. The priest, however, said, 'What are you doing?'18 Quando, entrati in casa di Mica, ebbero preso la statua scolpita, l''efod', i 'terafim' e la statua di getto, il sacerdote disse loro: "Che fate?".
'Be quiet,' they replied. 'Put your hand over your mouth and come with us, and become our father andpriest. Are you better off as domestic priest to one man, or as priest to a tribe and clan in Israel?'19 Quelli gli risposero: "Taci, mettiti la mano sulla bocca, vieni con noi e sarai per noi padre e sacerdote. Che cosa è meglio per te, essere sacerdote della casa di un uomo solo oppure essere sacerdote di una tribù e di una famiglia in Israele?".
The priest was delighted; he took the ephod, the domestic images and the carved statue, and wentoff among the people.20 Il sacerdote gioì in cuor suo; prese l''efod', i 'terafim' e la statua scolpita e si unì a quella gente.
Resuming their original line of march, they set off, having put the women, children, livestock andbaggage out in front.21 Allora si rimisero in cammino, mettendo innanzi a loro i bambini, il bestiame e le masserizie.
They had gone some distance from Micah's house, when the people living in the houses near Micah'shouse raised the alarm and set off in pursuit of the Danites.22 Quando erano già lontani dalla casa di Mica, i suoi vicini si misero in armi e raggiunsero i Daniti.
As they shouted after the Danites, the latter, turning about, said to Micah, 'What is the matter withyou, that you are shouting like this?'23 Allora gridarono ai Daniti. Questi si voltarono e dissero a Mica: "Perché ti sei messo in armi?".
He replied, 'You have taken away my god, which I have had made, and the priest as wel . You aregoing away, and what have I got left? And now you ask me, "What is the matter?" '24 Egli rispose: "Avete portato via gli dèi che mi ero fatti e il sacerdote e ve ne siete andati. Ora che mi resta? Come potete dunque dirmi: Che hai?".
The Danites said, 'Let us hear no more from you, or quick-tempered men may set about you, and thismight cost you your life and the lives of your family!'25 I Daniti gli dissero: "Non si senta la tua voce dietro a noi, perché uomini irritati potrebbero scagliarsi su di voi e tu ci perderesti la vita e la vita di quelli della tua casa!".
So the Danites went on their way; and Micah, seeing that they were the stronger, turned and wenthome.26 I Daniti continuarono il viaggio; Mica, vedendo che essi erano più forti di lui, si voltò indietro e tornò a casa.
So, having taken the god made by Micah, and the priest who had been his, the Danites marched onLaish, on a peaceful and trusting people. They put it to the sword and they burned down the town.27 Quelli dunque, presi con sé gli oggetti che Mica aveva fatti e il sacerdote che aveva al suo servizio, giunsero a Lais, a un popolo che se ne stava tranquillo e sicuro; lo passarono a fil di spada e diedero la città alle fiamme.
There was no one to come to the rescue, since it was a long way from Sidon and had no contact withthe Aramaeans. It lay in the valley running towards Beth-Rehob.
and cal ed it Dan, from the name of Dan their ancestor who had been born to Israel; original y,however, the town had been called Laish.29 Poi i Daniti ricostruirono la città e l'abitarono.
The Danites erected the carved statue for themselves. Jonathan son of Gershom, son of Moses, andhis sons after him were priests for the tribe of Dan til the day when the inhabitants of the country were carriedaway into exile.30 E i Daniti eressero per loro uso la statua scolpita; Gionata, figlio di Ghersom, figlio di Manàsse, e i suoi figli furono sacerdoti della tribù dei Daniti finché gli abitanti del paese furono deportati.
The carved statue made by Micah they instal ed for their own use, and there it stayed as long as thehouse of God remained at Shiloh.31 Essi misero in onore per proprio uso la statua scolpita, che Mica aveva fatta, finché la casa di Dio rimase a Silo.
