NEW JERUSALEMBIBBIA
Jephthah the Gileadite was a valiant warrior. He was a prostitute's son.
but Gilead's wife also bore him sons, and the sons of this wife, when they grew up, drove Jephthahaway, saying, 'No share of the paternal heritage for you, since you are a son of another woman.'2 Poi la moglie di Gàlaad gli partorì figli e, quando i figli della moglie furono adulti, cacciarono Iefte e gli dissero: "Tu non avrai eredità nella casa di nostro padre, perché sei figlio di un'altra donna".
Jephthah fled far from his brothers and settled in the territory of Tob. Jephthah enlisted a group ofadventurers who used to go raiding with him.3 Iefte fuggì lontano dai suoi fratelli e si stabilì nel paese di Tob.
It was some time after this that the Ammonites made war on Israel.4 Qualche tempo dopo gli Ammoniti mossero guerra a Israele.
And when the Ammonites had attacked Israel, the elders of Gilead went to fetch Jephthah from theterritory of Tob.5 Quando gli Ammoniti iniziarono la guerra contro Israele, gli anziani di Gàlaad andarono a prendere Iefte nel paese di Tob.
'Come', they said, 'and be our commander, so that we can fight the Ammonites.'6 Dissero a Iefte: "Vieni, sii nostro condottiero e combatteremo contro gli Ammoniti".
Jephthah replied to the elders of Gilead, 'Didn't you hate me and drive me out of my father's house? Why come to me now, when you are in trouble?'7 Ma Iefte rispose agli anziani di Gàlaad: "Non siete forse voi quelli che mi avete odiato e scacciato dalla casa di mio padre? Perché venite da me ora che siete in difficoltà?".
The elders of Gilead said to Jephthah, 'That is why we are turning to you now. Come with us; fight theAmmonites and be our chief, chief of al the people living in Gilead.'8 Gli anziani di Gàlaad dissero a Iefte: "Proprio per questo ora ci rivolgiamo a te: verrai con noi, combatterai contro gli Ammoniti e sarai il capo di noi tutti abitanti di Gàlaad".
Jephthah then said to the elders of Gilead, 'If you bring me home to fight the Ammonites and Yahwehdefeats them for me, I am to be your chief?'9 Iefte rispose agli anziani di Gàlaad: "Se mi riconducete per combattere contro gli Ammoniti e il Signore li mette in mio potere, io sarò vostro capo".
And the elders of Gilead then said to Jephthah, 'Yahweh be witness between us, if we do not do asyou have said!'10 Gli anziani di Gàlaad dissero a Iefte: "Il Signore sia testimone tra di noi, se non faremo come hai detto".
So Jephthah set off with the elders of Gilead. The people put him at their head as chief andcommander; and Jephthah repeated al his conditions at Mizpah in Yahweh's presence.11 Iefte dunque andò con gli anziani di Gàlaad; il popolo lo costituì suo capo e condottiero e Iefte ripeté le sue parole davanti al Signore in Mizpa.
Jephthah sent messengers to the king of the Ammonites to say to him, 'What do you have against us,for you to come and make war on my country?'12 Poi Iefte inviò messaggeri al re degli Ammoniti per dirgli: "Che c'è tra me e te, perché tu venga contro di me a muover guerra al mio paese?".
The king of the Ammonites replied to Jephthah's messengers, 'The reason is that when Israel cameup from Egypt, they seized my country from the Arnon to the Jabbok and to the Jordan; so now restore it to mepeaceful y.'13 Il re degli Ammoniti rispose ai messaggeri di Iefte: "Perché, quando Israele uscì dall'Egitto, si impadronì del mio territorio, dall'Arnon fino allo Iabbok e al Giordano; restituiscilo spontaneamente".
Jephthah sent messengers back to the king of the Ammonites14 Iefte inviò di nuovo messaggeri al re degli Ammoniti per dirgli:
with this answer, 'Jephthah says this, "Israel seized neither the country of Moab nor the country of theAmmonites.15 "Dice Iefte: Israele non si impadronì del paese di Moab, né del paese degli Ammoniti;
When Israel came out of Egypt, they marched through the desert as far as the Sea of Reeds and, having reached Kadesh,16 ma, quando Israele uscì dall'Egitto e attraversò il deserto fino al Mare Rosso e giunse a Kades,
Israel then sent messengers to the king of Edom to say: Please let me pass through your country, butthe king of Edom would not listen.
later, moving on through the desert and skirting the countries of Edom and Moab until arriving to theeast of Moabite territory, the people camped on the other side of the Arnon but did not enter Moabite territory, the Arnon being the Moabite frontier.18 Poi camminò per il deserto, fece il giro del paese di Edom e del paese di Moab, giunse a oriente del paese di Moab e si accampò oltre l'Arnon senza entrare nei territori di Moab; perché l'Arnon segna il confine di Moab.
Israel then sent messengers to Sihon, king of the Amorites, ruling in Heshbon. Israel's message was:Please let me pass through your country to my destination.19 Allora Israele mandò messaggeri a Sicon, re degli Amorrei, re di Chesbon, e gli disse: Lasciaci passare dal tuo paese, per arrivare al nostro.
But Sihon would not let Israel pass through his territory; he mustered his whole army; they encampedat Jahaz, and he then joined battle with Israel.20 Ma Sicon non si fidò che Israele passasse per i suoi confini; anzi radunò tutta la sua gente, si accampò a Iaaz e combatté contro Israele.
Yahweh, God of Israel, delivered Sihon and his whole army into the power of Israel, who defeatedthem; as the result of which, Israel took possession of the entire territory of the Amorites living in that region.21 Il Signore, Dio d'Israele, mise Sicon e tutta la sua gente nelle mani d'Israele, che li sconfisse; così Israele conquistò tutto il paese degli Amorrei che abitavano quel territorio;
Israel took possession of all the Amorite territory from the Arnon to the Jabbok and from the desert tothe Jordan.22 conquistò tutti i territori degli Amorrei, dall'Arnon allo Iabbok e dal deserto al Giordano.
And now that Yahweh, God of Israel, has dispossessed the Amorites before his people Israel, do youthink you can dispossess us?23 Ora il Signore, Dio d'Israele, ha scacciato gli Amorrei davanti a Israele suo popolo e tu vorresti possedere il loro paese?
Will you not keep as your possession whatever Chemosh, your god, has given you? And, just thesame, we shal keep as ours whatever Yahweh our God has given us, to inherit from those who were before us!24 Non possiedi tu quello che Camos tuo dio ti ha fatto possedere?
Are you a better man than Balak son of Zippor, king of Moab? Did he pick a quarrel with Israel?
When Israel settled in Heshbon and its dependencies, and in Aroer and its dependencies, or in any ofthe towns on the banks of the Arnon (three hundred years ago), why did you not recover them then?26 Da trecento anni Israele abita a Chesbon e nelle sue dipendenze, ad Aroer e nelle sue dipendenze e in tutte le città lungo l'Arnon; perché non gliele avete tolte durante questo tempo?
I for my part have done you no harm, but you are wronging me by making war on me. Let Yahwehthe Judge give judgement today between the Israelites and the king of the Ammonites." '27 Io non ti ho fatto torto e tu agisci male verso di me, muovendomi guerra; il Signore giudice giudichi oggi tra gli Israeliti e gli Ammoniti!".
But the king of the Ammonites took no notice of the message that Jephthah sent him.28 Ma il re degli Ammoniti non ascoltò le parole che Iefte gli aveva mandato a dire.
The spirit of Yahweh was on Jephthah, who crossed Gilead and Manasseh, crossed by way ofMizpah in Gilead, and from Mizpah in Gilead crossed into Ammonite territory.29 Allora lo spirito del Signore venne su Iefte ed egli attraversò Gàlaad e Manàsse, passò a Mizpa di Gàlaad e da Mizpa di Gàlaad raggiunse gli Ammoniti.
And Jephthah made a vow to Yahweh, 'If you deliver the Ammonites into my grasp,30 Iefte fece voto al Signore e disse: "Se tu mi metti nelle mani gli Ammoniti,
the first thing to come out of the doors of my house to meet me when I return in triumph from fightingthe Ammonites shal belong to Yahweh, and I shal sacrifice it as a burnt offering.'31 la persona che uscirà per prima dalle porte di casa mia per venirmi incontro, quando tornerò vittorioso dagli Ammoniti, sarà per il Signore e io l'offrirò in olocausto".
Jephthah crossed into Ammonite territory to attack them, and Yahweh delivered them into his grasp.32 Quindi Iefte raggiunse gli Ammoniti per combatterli e il Signore glieli mise nelle mani.
He beat them from Aroer to the border of Minnith (twenty towns) and to Abel-Keramim. It was a verysevere defeat, and the Ammonites were humbled by the Israelites.33 Egli li sconfisse da Aroer fin verso Minnit, prendendo loro venti città, e fino ad Abel-Cheramin. Così gli Ammoniti furono umiliati davanti agli Israeliti.
As Jephthah returned to his house at Mizpah, his daughter came out to meet him, dancing to thesound of tambourines. She was his only child; apart from her, he had neither son nor daughter.34 Poi Iefte tornò a Mizpa, verso casa sua; ed ecco uscirgli incontro la figlia, con timpani e danze. Era l'unica figlia: non aveva altri figli, né altre figlie.
When he saw her, he tore his clothes and exclaimed, 'Oh my daughter, what misery you havebrought upon me! You have joined those who bring misery into my life! I have made a promise before Yahwehwhich I cannot retract.'35 Appena la vide, si stracciò le vesti e disse: "Figlia mia, tu mi hai rovinato! Anche tu sei con quelli che mi hanno reso infelice! Io ho dato la mia parola al Signore e non posso ritirarmi".
She replied, 'Father, you have made a promise to Yahweh; treat me as the promise that you havemade requires, since Yahweh has granted you vengeance on your enemies the Ammonites.'36 Essa gli disse: "Padre mio, se hai dato parola al Signore, fa' di me secondo quanto è uscito dalla tua bocca, perché il Signore ti ha concesso vendetta sugli Ammoniti, tuoi nemici".
She then said to her father, 'Grant me this! Let me be free for two months. I shal go and wander inthe mountains, and with my companions bewail my virginity.'37 Poi disse al padre: "Mi sia concesso questo: lasciami libera per due mesi, perché io vada errando per i monti a piangere la mia verginità con le mie compagne".
He replied, 'Go,' and let her go away for two months. So she went away with her companions andbewailed her virginity in the mountains.38 Egli le rispose: "Va'!", e la lasciò andare per due mesi.
When the two months were over she went back to her father, and he treated her as the vow that hehad uttered bound him. She had remained a virgin.
for the daughters of Israel to leave home year by year and lament over the daughter of Jephthah theGileadite for four days every year.40 ogni anno le fanciulle d'Israele vanno a piangere la figlia di Iefte il Galaadita, per quattro giorni.
