NEW JERUSALEMBIBBIA
Now, it happened that Adoni-Zedek king of Jerusalem, learned that Joshua had conquered Ai and putthe town under the curse of destruction, treating Ai and its king as he had already treated Jericho and its king;and also that the inhabitants of Gibeon had made peace with Israel and were living with them.1 Quando Adoni-Zedek, re di Gerusalemme, venne a sapere che Giosuè aveva preso Ai e l'aveva votata allo sterminio, e che, come aveva fatto a Gèrico e al suo re, aveva fatto ad Ai e al suo re e che gli abitanti di Gàbaon avevano fatto pace con gli Israeliti e si trovavano ormai in mezzo a loro,
There was consternation at this, since Gibeon was as important a town as any of the royal townsthemselves (it was larger than Ai), while al its citizens were fighting men.2 ebbe grande paura, perché Gàbaon, una delle città regali, era più grande di Ai e tutti i suoi uomini erano valorosi.
Consequently, Adoni-Zedek king of Jerusalem sent word to Hoham king of Hebron, Piram king ofJarmuth, Japhia king of Lachish, and Debir king of Eglon,3 Allora Adoni-Zedek, re di Gerusalemme, mandò a dire a Oam, re di Ebron, a Piream, re di Iarmut, a Iafia, re di Lachis e a Debir, re di Eglon:
'Join me up here and help me to conquer Gibeon, since it has made peace with Joshua and theIsraelites.'4 "Venite da me, aiutatemi e assaltiamo Gàbaon, perché ha fatto pace con Giosuè e con gli Israeliti".
The five Amorite kings joined forces and went up there, that is, the king of Jerusalem, the king ofHebron, the king of Jarmuth, the king of Lachish and the king of Eglon, they and al their armies; laying siege toGibeon, they attacked it.5 Quelli si unirono e i cinque re amorrei, il re di Gerusalemme, il re di Ebron, il re di Iarmut, il re di Lachis ed il re di Eglon, vennero con tutte le loro truppe, si accamparono contro Gàbaon e le diedero battaglia.
The men of Gibeon sent word to Joshua in the camp at Gilgal, 'Do not desert your servants; come uphere quickly to save us and help us, since al the Amorite kings living in the highlands have al ied themselvesagainst us.'6 Allora gli uomini di Gàbaon mandarono a dire a Giosuè, all'accampamento di Gàlgala: "Non privare del tuo aiuto i tuoi servi. Vieni presto da noi; salvaci e aiutaci, perché si sono alleati contro di noi tutti i re degli Amorrei, che abitano sulle montagne".
Joshua came up from Gilgal, he, al the fighting men and all the bravest of his army.7 Giosuè partì da Gàlgala con tutta la gente di guerra e tutti i prodi guerrieri.
Yahweh said to Joshua, 'Do not be afraid of these people; I have put them at your mercy; not one ofthem wil put up any resistance.'8 Allora il Signore disse a Giosuè: "Non aver paura di loro, perché li metto in tuo potere; nessuno di loro resisterà davanti a te".
Having marched from Gilgal throughout the night, Joshua caught them unawares.9 Giosuè piombò su di loro d'improvviso: tutta la notte aveva marciato, partendo da Gàlgala.
Yahweh threw them into disorder at the sight of Israel, defeating them completely at Gibeon;furthermore, he pursued them by way of the Descent of Beth-Horon and harassed them as far as Azekah (andas far as Makkedah).10 Il Signore mise lo scompiglio in mezzo a loro dinanzi ad Israele, che inflisse loro in Gàbaon una grande disfatta, li inseguì verso la salita di Bet-Coron e li batté fino ad Azeka e fino a Makkeda.
And as they fled from Israel down the Descent of Beth-Horon, Yahweh hurled huge hailstones fromheaven on them all the way to Azekah, and they died. More of them died under the hailstones than under theswords of the Israelites.11 Mentre essi fuggivano dinanzi ad Israele ed erano alla discesa di Bet-Coron, il Signore lanciò dal cielo su di essi come grosse pietre fino ad Azeka e molti morirono. Coloro che morirono per le pietre della grandine furono più di quanti ne uccidessero gli Israeliti con la spada.
Joshua then spoke to Yahweh, the day Yahweh delivered the Amorites to the Israelites. In thepresence of Israel, Joshua said: Sun, stand stil over Gibeon, and, moon, you too, over the Vale of Aijalon!12 Allora, quando il Signore mise gli Amorrei nelle mani degli Israeliti, Giosuè disse al Signore sotto gli occhi di Israele:

"Sole, fèrmati in Gàbaon
e tu, luna, sulla valle di Aialon".
And the sun stood stil , and the moon halted, until the people had taken vengeance on their enemies. Is this not written in the Book of the Just? The sun stood still in the middle of the sky and delayed its setting foralmost a whole day.13 Si fermò il sole
e la luna rimase immobile
finché il popolo non si vendicò dei nemici.

Non è forse scritto nel libro del Giusto: "Stette fermo il sole in mezzo al cielo e non si affrettò a calare quasi un giorno intero.
There was never a day like that before or since, when Yahweh obeyed the voice of a man -- forYahweh was fighting for Israel.14 Non ci fu giorno come quello, né prima né dopo, perché aveva ascoltato il Signore la voce d'un uomo, perché il Signore combatteva per Israele"?
Joshua, and al Israel with him, then went back to the camp at Gilgal.15 Poi Giosuè con tutto Israele ritornò all'accampamento di Gàlgala.
As regards the five kings, these had fled and hidden in the cave of Makkedah,16 Quei cinque re erano fuggiti e si erano nascosti nella grotta in Makkeda.
and news of this was brought to Joshua. 'The five kings have been found hiding in the cave atMakkedah.'17 Fu portata a Giosuè la notizia: "Sono stati trovati i cinque re, nascosti nella grotta in Makkeda".
Joshua said, 'Rol great stones over the mouth of the cave and post men there to keep guard.18 Disse loro Giosuè: "Rotolate grosse pietre contro l'entrata della grotta e fate restare presso di essa uomini per sorvegliarli.
You yourselves, do not stay there doing nothing; pursue the enemy, cut off their line of retreat and donot let them enter their towns, for Yahweh your God has put them at your mercy.'19 Voi però non fermatevi, inseguite i vostri nemici, attaccateli nella retroguardia e non permettete loro di entrare nelle loro città, perché il Signore Dio vostro li mette nelle vostre mani".
When Joshua and the Israelites had finished inflicting a very great defeat on them, to the point ofdestroying them, those who had escaped alive took refuge in their fortresses.20 Quando Giosuè e gli Israeliti ebbero terminato di infliggere loro una strage enorme così da finirli, e i superstiti furono loro sfuggiti ed entrati nelle fortezze,
The people came back to Joshua's camp at Makkedah; they were all safe and sound, and no onedared to attempt anything against the Israelites.21 ritornò tutto il popolo all'accampamento presso Giosuè, in Makkeda, in pace. Nessuno mosse più la lingua contro gli Israeliti.
Joshua then said, 'Clear the mouth of the cave and bring the five kings out to me.'22 Disse allora Giosuè: "Aprite l'ingresso della grotta e fatemi uscire dalla grotta quei cinque re".
They did so, and brought the five kings out of the cave to take them to him: the king of Jerusalem, theking of Hebron, the king of Jarmuth, the king of Lachish and the king of Eglon.23 Così fecero e condussero a lui fuori dalla grotta quei cinque re, il re di Gerusalemme, il re di Ebron, il re di Iarmut, il re di Lachis e il re di Eglon.
When these kings had been brought out, Joshua assembled al the men of Israel and said to thechiefs of the warriors who had fought with him, 'Come forward and put your feet on the necks of these kings!'They came forward and put their feet on their necks.24 Quando quei cinque re furono fatti uscire dinanzi a Giosuè, egli convocò tutti gli Israeliti e disse ai capi dei guerrieri che avevano marciato con lui: "Accostatevi e ponete i vostri piedi sul collo di questi re!". Quelli s'accostarono e posero i piedi sul loro collo.
'Be fearless and undaunted,' Joshua went on, 'be strong and stand firm, for this is how Yahweh wildeal with al the enemies you fight.'25 Disse loro Giosuè: "Non temete e non spaventatevi! Siate forti e coraggiosi, perché così farà il Signore a tutti i nemici, contro cui dovrete combattere".
With this, Joshua struck and killed them and had them hanged on five trees; they hung there tillevening.26 Dopo di ciò, Giosuè li colpì e li uccise e li fece impiccare a cinque alberi, ai quali rimasero appesi fino alla sera.
At the hour of sunset, on Joshua's orders, they were taken down from the trees and thrown into thecave where they had been hiding. Great stones were laid over the mouth of the cave, and these are stil there tothis very day.27 All'ora del tramonto, per ordine di Giosuè, li calarono dagli alberi, li gettarono nella grotta dove si erano nascosti e posero grosse pietre all'ingresso della grotta: vi sono fino ad oggi.
The same day Joshua captured Makkedah, putting it and its king to the sword; he delivered themover to the curse of destruction, with every living creature there, and let no one escape, and he treated the kingof Makkedah as he had treated the king of Jericho.28 Giosuè in quel giorno si impadronì di Makkeda, la passò a fil di spada con il suo re, votò allo sterminio loro e ogni essere vivente che era in essa, non lasciò un superstite e trattò il re di Makkeda come aveva trattato il re di Gèrico.
Joshua, and al Israel with him, went on from Makkedah to Libnah and attacked it29 Giosuè poi, e con lui Israele, passò da Makkeda a Libna e mosse guerra contro Libna.
and Yahweh put this, too, and its king at Israel's mercy; and Israel put every living creature there tothe sword, and left none alive, and treated its king like the king of Jericho.30 Il Signore mise anch'essa e il suo re in potere di Israele, che la passò a fil di spada con ogni essere vivente che era in essa; non vi lasciò alcun superstite e trattò il suo re come aveva trattato il re di Gèrico.
Joshua, and al Israel with him, went on from Libnah to Lachish and besieged it and attacked it.31 Poi Giosuè, e con lui tutto Israele, passò da Libna a Lachis e si accampò contro di essa e le mosse guerra.
Yahweh put Lachish at Israel's mercy, and Israel took it on the second day and put it and every livingcreature in it to the sword, as they had treated Libnah.32 Il Signore mise Lachis in potere di Israele, che la prese il secondo giorno e la passò a fil di spada con ogni essere vivente che era in essa, come aveva fatto a Libna.
Horam king of Gezer then marched up to help Lachish, but Joshua beat him and his people until notone was left alive.33 Allora, per venire in aiuto a Lachis, era partito Oam, re di Ghezer, e Giosuè batté lui e il suo popolo, fino a non lasciargli alcun superstite.
Joshua, and al Israel with him, went on from Lachish to Eglon. They besieged it and attacked it.34 Poi Giosuè, e con lui tutto Israele, passò da Lachis ad Eglon, si accamparono contro di essa e le mossero guerra.
The same day they took it and put it to the sword. That day he delivered over to the curse ofdestruction every living creature there, treating it as he had treated Lachish.35 In quel giorno la presero e la passarono a fil di spada e votarono allo sterminio, in quel giorno, ogni essere vivente che era in essa, come aveva fatto a Lachis.
Joshua, and al Israel with him, went on up from Eglon to Hebron. They attacked it,36 Giosuè poi, e con lui tutto Israele, salì da Eglon ad Ebron e le mossero guerra.
took it and put it to the sword, with its king, its dependencies and every living creature in it. As he hadtreated Eglon, so here, he left no one alive. He delivered it over to the curse of destruction, with every livingcreature in it.37 La presero e la passarono a fil di spada con il suo re, tutti i suoi villaggi e ogni essere vivente che era in essa; non lasciò alcun superstite; come aveva fatto ad Eglon, la votò allo sterminio con ogni essere vivente che era in essa.
Joshua, and al Israel with him, then turned back on Debir and attacked it.38 Poi Giosuè, e con lui tutto Israele, si rivolse a Debir e le mosse guerra.
He took it and its king and al the places belonging to it; they put them to the sword, and every livingcreature there they delivered over to the curse of destruction. He left no one alive. As he had treated Hebron, ashe had treated Libnah and its king, so he treated Debir and its king.39 La prese con il suo re e tutti i suoi villaggi; li passarono a fil di spada e votarono allo sterminio ogni essere vivente che era in essa; non lasciò alcun superstite. Trattò Debir e il suo re come aveva trattato Ebron e come aveva trattato Libna e il suo re.
Thus Joshua subjugated the whole country: the highlands, the Negeb, the lowlands and wateredfoothil s, and al their kings. He left not one survivor and put every living thing under the curse of destruction, asYahweh, God of Israel, had commanded.40 Così Giosuè batté tutto il paese: le montagne, il Negheb, il bassopiano, le pendici e tutti i loro re. Non lasciò alcun superstite e votò allo sterminio ogni essere che respira, come aveva comandato il Signore, Dio di Israele.
Joshua conquered them from Kadesh-Barnea to Gaza, and the whole region of Goshen as far asGibeon.41 Giosuè li colpì da Kades-Barnea fino a Gaza e tutto il paese di Gosen fino a Gàbaon.
Al these kings and their territory Joshua captured in a single campaign, because Yahweh, God ofIsrael, fought for Israel.42 Giosuè prese tutti questi re e il loro paese in una sola volta, perché il Signore, Dio di Israele, combatteva per Israele.
And then Joshua, and al Israel with him, went back to the camp at Gilgal.43 Poi Giosuè con tutto Israele tornò all'accampamento di Gàlgala.
