NEW JERUSALEMBIBBIA
Am I not free? Am I not an apostle? Have I not seen Jesus our Lord? Are you not my work in the Lord?1 Non sono forse libero, io? Non sono un apostolo? Non ho veduto Gesù, Signore nostro? E non siete voi la mia opera nel Signore?
Even if to others I am not an apostle, to you at any rate I am, for you are the seal of my apostolate inthe Lord.2 Anche se per altri non sono apostolo, per voi almeno lo sono; voi siete il sigillo del mio apostolato nel Signore.
To those who want to interrogate me, this is my answer.3 Questa è la mia difesa contro quelli che mi accusano.
Have we not every right to eat and drink?4 Non abbiamo forse noi il diritto di mangiare e di bere?
And every right to be accompanied by a Christian wife, like the other apostles, like the brothers of theLord, and like Cephas?5 Non abbiamo il diritto di portare con noi una donna credente, come fanno anche gli altri apostoli e i fratelli del Signore e Cefa?
Are Barnabas and I the only ones who have no right to stop working?6 Ovvero solo io e Bàrnaba non abbiamo il diritto di non lavorare?
What soldier would ever serve in the army at his own expense? And who is there who would plant avineyard and never eat the fruit from it; or would keep a flock and not feed on the milk from his flock?7 E chi mai presta servizio militare a proprie spese? Chi pianta una vigna senza mangiarne il frutto? O chi fa pascolare un gregge senza cibarsi del latte del gregge?
Do not think that this is merely worldly wisdom. Does not the Law say exactly the same? It is written inthe Law of Moses:8 Io non dico questo da un punto di vista umano; è la Legge che dice così.
You must not muzzle an ox when it is treading out the corn. Is it about oxen that God is concernedhere,9 Sta scritto infatti nella legge di Mosè: 'Non metterai la museruola al bue che trebbia'. Forse Dio si dà pensiero dei buoi?
or is it not said entirely for our sake? Clearly it was written for our sake, because it is right thatwhoever ploughs should plough with the expectation of having his share, and whoever threshes should threshwith the expectation of having his share.10 Oppure lo dice proprio per noi? Certamente fu scritto per noi. Poiché colui che ara deve arare nella speranza di avere la sua parte, come il trebbiatore trebbiare nella stessa speranza.
If we have sown the seed of spiritual things in you, is it too much to ask that we should receive fromyou a crop of material things?11 Se noi abbiamo seminato in voi le cose spirituali, è forse gran cosa se raccoglieremo beni materiali?
Others have been given such rights over you and do we not deserve more? In fact, we have neverexercised this right; on the contrary, we have put up with anything rather than obstruct the gospel of Christ in anyway.12 Se gli altri hanno tale diritto su di voi, non l'avremmo noi di più? Noi però non abbiamo voluto servirci di questo diritto, ma tutto sopportiamo per non recare intralcio al vangelo di Cristo.
Do you not realise that the ministers in the Temple get their food from the Temple, and those whoserve at the altar can claim their share from the altar?13 Non sapete che coloro che celebrano il culto traggono il vitto dal culto, e coloro che attendono all'altare hanno parte dell'altare?
In the same way, the Lord gave the instruction that those who preach the gospel should get their livingfrom the gospel.14 Così anche il Signore ha disposto che quelli che annunziano il vangelo vivano del vangelo.
However, I have never availed myself of any rights of this kind; and I have not written this to securesuch treatment for myself; I would rather die than that . . . No one shal take from me this ground of boasting.15 Ma io non mi sono avvalso di nessuno di questi diritti, né ve ne scrivo perché ci si regoli in tal modo con me; preferirei piuttosto morire. Nessuno mi toglierà questo vanto!
In fact, preaching the gospel gives me nothing to boast of, for I am under compulsion and I should bein trouble if I failed to do it.16 Non è infatti per me un vanto predicare il vangelo; è un dovere per me: guai a me se non predicassi il vangelo!
If I did it on my own initiative I would deserve a reward; but if I do it under compulsion I am simplyaccepting a task entrusted to me.17 Se lo faccio di mia iniziativa, ho diritto alla ricompensa; ma se non lo faccio di mia iniziativa, è un incarico che mi è stato affidato.
What reward do I have, then? That in my preaching I offer the gospel free of charge to avoid using therights which the gospel al ows me.18 Quale è dunque la mia ricompensa? Quella di predicare gratuitamente il vangelo senza usare del diritto conferitomi dal vangelo.
So though I was not a slave to any human being, I put myself in slavery to al people, to win as manyas I could.19 Infatti, pur essendo libero da tutti, mi sono fatto servo di tutti per guadagnarne il maggior numero:
To the Jews I made myself as a Jew, to win the Jews; to those under the Law as one under the Law(though I am not), in order to win those under the Law;20 mi sono fatto Giudeo con i Giudei, per guadagnare i Giudei; con coloro che sono sotto la legge sono diventato come uno che è sotto la legge, pur non essendo sotto la legge, allo scopo di guadagnare coloro che sono sotto la legge.
to those outside the Law as one outside the Law, though I am not outside the Law but under Christ'slaw, to win those outside the Law.21 Con coloro che non hanno legge sono diventato come uno che è senza legge, pur non essendo senza la legge di Dio, anzi essendo nella legge di Cristo, per guadagnare coloro che sono senza legge.
To the weak, I made myself weak, to win the weak. I accommodated myself to people in all kinds ofdifferent situations, so that by al possible means I might bring some to salvation.22 Mi sono fatto debole con i deboli, per guadagnare i deboli; mi sono fatto tutto a tutti, per salvare ad ogni costo qualcuno.
Al this I do for the sake of the gospel, that I may share its benefits with others.23 Tutto io faccio per il vangelo, per diventarne partecipe con loro.
Do you not realise that, though al the runners in the stadium take part in the race, only one of themgets the prize? Run like that -- to win.24 Non sapete che nelle corse allo stadio tutti corrono, ma uno solo conquista il premio? Correte anche voi in modo da conquistarlo!
Every athlete concentrates completely on training, and this is to win a wreath that wil wither, whereasours wil never wither.25 Però ogni atleta è temperante in tutto; essi lo fanno per ottenere una corona corruttibile, noi invece una incorruttibile.
So that is how I run, not without a clear goal; and how I box, not wasting blows on air.26 Io dunque corro, ma non come chi è senza mèta; faccio il pugilato, ma non come chi batte l'aria,
I punish my body and bring it under control, to avoid any risk that, having acted as herald for others, Imyself may be disqualified.27 anzi tratto duramente il mio corpo e lo trascino in schiavitù perché non succeda che dopo avere predicato agli altri, venga io stesso squalificato.
