NEW JERUSALEMBIBBIA
Then Agrippa said to Paul, 'You have leave to speak on your own behalf.' And Paul held up his handand began his defence:1 Agrippa disse a Paolo: "Ti è concesso di parlare a tua difesa". Allora Paolo, stesa la mano, si difese così:
'I consider myself fortunate, King Agrippa, in that it is before you I am to answer today all the chargesmade against me by the Jews,2 "Mi considero fortunato, o re Agrippa, di potermi discolpare da tutte le accuse di cui sono incriminato dai Giudei, oggi qui davanti a te,
the more so because you are an expert in matters of custom and controversy among the Jews. So Ibeg you to listen to me patiently.3 che conosci a perfezione tutte le usanze e questioni riguardanti i Giudei. Perciò ti prego di ascoltarmi con pazienza.
'My manner of life from my youth, a life spent from the beginning among my own people and inJerusalem, is common knowledge among the Jews.4 La mia vita fin dalla mia giovinezza, vissuta tra il mio popolo e a Gerusalemme, la conoscono tutti i Giudei;
They have known me for a long time and could testify, if they would, that I fol owed the strictest party inour religion and lived as a Pharisee.5 essi sanno pure da tempo, se vogliono renderne testimonianza, che, come fariseo, sono vissuto nella setta più rigida della nostra religione.
And now it is for my hope in the promise made by God to our ancestors that I am on trial,6 Ed ora mi trovo sotto processo a causa della speranza nella promessa fatta da Dio ai nostri padri,
the promise that our twelve tribes, constant in worship night and day, hope to attain. For that hope,Your Majesty, I am actual y put on trial by Jews!7 e che le nostre dodici tribù sperano di vedere compiuta, servendo Dio notte e giorno con perseveranza. Di questa speranza, o re, sono ora incolpato dai Giudei!
Why does it seem incredible to you that God should raise the dead?8 Perché è considerato inconcepibile fra di voi che Dio risusciti i morti?
'As for me, I once thought it was my duty to use every means to oppose the name of Jesus theNazarene.9 Anch'io credevo un tempo mio dovere di lavorare attivamente contro il nome di Gesù il Nazareno,
This I did in Jerusalem; I myself threw many of God's holy people into prison, acting on authority fromthe chief priests, and when they were being sentenced to death I cast my vote against them.10 come in realtà feci a Gerusalemme; molti dei fedeli li rinchiusi in prigione con l'autorizzazione avuta dai sommi sacerdoti e, quando venivano condannati a morte, anch'io ho votato contro di loro.
I often went round the synagogues inflicting penalties, trying in this way to force them to renouncetheir faith; my fury against them was so extreme that I even pursued them into foreign cities.11 In tutte le sinagoghe cercavo di costringerli con le torture a bestemmiare e, infuriando all'eccesso contro di loro, davo loro la caccia fin nelle città straniere.
'On such an expedition I was going to Damascus, armed with ful powers and a commission from thechief priests,12 In tali circostanze, mentre stavo andando a Damasco con autorizzazione e pieni poteri da parte dei sommi sacerdoti, verso mezzogiorno
and in the middle of the day as I was on my way, Your Majesty, I saw a light from heaven shiningmore bril iantly than the sun round me and my fel ow-travellers.13 vidi sulla strada, o re, una luce dal cielo, più splendente del sole, che avvolse me e i miei compagni di viaggio.
We all fel to the ground, and I heard a voice saying to me in Hebrew, "Saul, Saul, why are youpersecuting me? It is hard for you, kicking against the goad.14 Tutti cademmo a terra e io udii dal cielo una voce che mi diceva in ebraico: Saulo, Saulo, perché mi perseguiti? Duro è per te ricalcitrare contro il pungolo.
Then I said, "Who are you, Lord?" And the Lord answered, "I am Jesus, whom you are persecuting.15 E io dissi: Chi sei, o Signore? E il Signore rispose: Io sono Gesù, che tu perseguiti.
But get up and stand on your feet, for I have appeared to you for this reason: to appoint you as myservant and as witness of this vision in which you have seen me, and of others in which I shal appear to you.16 Su, alzati e rimettiti in piedi; ti sono apparso infatti per costituirti ministro e testimone di quelle cose che hai visto e di quelle per cui ti apparirò ancora.
I shal rescue you from the people and from the nations to whom I send you17 Per questo ti 'libererò' dal popolo e 'dai pagani, ai quali ti mando'
to open their eyes, so that they may turn from darkness to light, from the dominion of Satan to God,and receive, through faith in me, forgiveness of their sins and a share in the inheritance of the sanctified."18 'ad aprir' loro 'gli occhi', perché passino 'dalle tenebre alla luce' e dal potere di satana a Dio e ottengano la remissione dei peccati e l'eredità in mezzo a coloro che sono stati santificati per la fede in me.
'After that, King Agrippa, I could not disobey the heavenly vision.19 Pertanto, o re Agrippa, io non ho disobbedito alla visione celeste;
On the contrary I started preaching, first to the people of Damascus, then to those of Jerusalem andal Judaean territory, and also to the gentiles, urging them to repent and turn to God, proving their change ofheart by their deeds.20 ma prima a quelli di Damasco, poi a quelli di Gerusalemme e in tutta la regione della Giudea e infine ai pagani, predicavo di convertirsi e di rivolgersi a Dio, comportandosi in maniera degna della conversione.
This was why the Jews laid hands on me in the Temple and tried to do away with me.21 Per queste cose i Giudei mi assalirono nel tempio e tentarono di uccidermi.
But I was blessed with God's help, and so I have stood firm to this day, testifying to great and smalalike, saying nothing more than what the prophets and Moses himself said would happen:22 Ma l'aiuto di Dio mi ha assistito fino a questo giorno, e posso ancora rendere testimonianza agli umili e ai grandi. Null'altro io affermo se non quello che i profeti e Mosè dichiararono che doveva accadere,
that the Christ was to suffer and that, as the first to rise from the dead, he was to proclaim a light forour people and for the gentiles.'23 che cioè il Cristo sarebbe morto, e che, primo tra i risorti da morte, avrebbe annunziato la luce al popolo e ai pagani".

He had reached this point in his defence when Festus shouted out, 'Paul, you are out of your mind; althat learning of yours is driving you mad.'24 Mentr'egli parlava così in sua difesa, Festo a gran voce disse: "Sei pazzo, Paolo; la troppa scienza ti ha dato al cervello!".
But Paul answered, 'Festus, your Excel ency, I am not mad: I am speaking words of sober truth andgood sense.25 E Paolo: "Non sono pazzo, disse, eccellentissimo Festo, ma sto dicendo parole vere e sagge.
The king understands these matters, and to him I now speak fearlessly. I am confident that nothing ofal this comes as a surprise to him; after al , these things were not done in a corner.26 Il re è al corrente di queste cose e davanti a lui parlo con franchezza. Penso che niente di questo gli sia sconosciuto, poiché non sono fatti accaduti in segreto.
King Agrippa, do you believe in the prophets? I know you do.'27 Credi, o re Agrippa, nei profeti? So che ci credi".
At this Agrippa said to Paul, 'A little more, and your arguments would make a Christian of me.'28 E Agrippa a Paolo: "Per poco non mi convinci a farmi cristiano!".
Paul replied, 'Little or much, I wish before God that not only you but al who are listening to me todaywould come to be as I am -- except for these chains.'29 E Paolo: "Per poco o per molto, io vorrei supplicare Dio che non soltanto tu, ma quanti oggi mi ascoltano diventassero così come sono io, eccetto queste catene!".
At this the king rose to his feet, with the governor and Bernice and those who sat there with them.30 Si alzò allora il re e con lui il governatore, Berenìce, e quelli che avevano preso parte alla seduta
When they had retired they talked together and agreed, 'This man is doing nothing that deservesdeath or imprisonment.'31 e avviandosi conversavano insieme e dicevano: "Quest'uomo non ha fatto nulla che meriti la morte o le catene".
And Agrippa remarked to Festus, 'The man could have been set free if he had not appealed toCaesar.'32 E Agrippa disse a Festo: "Costui poteva essere rimesso in libertà, se non si fosse appellato a Cesare".
