NEW JERUSALEMBIBBIA
In Babylon there lived a man named Joakim.1 Abitava in Babilonia un uomo chiamato Ioakìm,
He was married to a woman called Susanna daughter of Hilkiah, a woman of great beauty; and shewas God-fearing, for2 il quale aveva sposato una donna chiamata Susanna, figlia di Chelkìa, di rara bellezza e timorata di Dio.
her parents were worthy people and had instructed their daughter in the Law of Moses.3 I suoi genitori, che erano giusti, avevano educato la figlia secondo la legge di Mosè.
Joakim was a very rich man and had a garden by his house; he used to be visited by a considerablenumber of the Jews, since he was held in greater respect than any other man.4 Ioakìm era molto ricco e possedeva un giardino vicino a casa ed essendo stimato più di ogni altro i Giudei andavano da lui.
Two elderly men had been selected from the people, that year, to act as judges. Of such the Lord hadsaid, 'Wickedness has come to Babylon through the elders and judges posing as guides to the people.'5 In quell'anno erano stati eletti giudici del popolo due anziani: erano di quelli di cui il Signore ha detto: "L'iniquità è uscita da Babilonia per opera di anziani e di giudici, che solo in apparenza sono guide del popolo".
These men were often at Joakim's house, and all who were engaged in litigation used to come tothem.6 Questi frequentavano la casa di Ioakìm e tutti quelli che avevano qualche lite da risolvere si recavano da loro.
At midday, when the people had gone away, Susanna would take a walk in her husband's garden.7 Quando il popolo, verso il mezzogiorno, se ne andava, Susanna era solita recarsi a passeggiare nel giardino del marito.
The two elders, who used to watch her every day as she came in to take her walk, gradual y began todesire her.8 I due anziani che ogni giorno la vedevano andare a passeggiare, furono presi da un'ardente passione per lei:
They threw reason aside, making no effort to turn their eyes to Heaven, and forgetting the demands ofvirtue.9 persero il lume della ragione, distolsero gli occhi per non vedere il Cielo e non ricordare i giusti giudizi.
Both were inflamed by passion for her, but they hid their desire from each other,10 Eran colpiti tutt'e due dalla passione per lei,
for they were ashamed to admit the longing to sleep with her,11 ma l'uno nascondeva all'altro la sua pena, perché si vergognavano di rivelare la brama che avevano di unirsi a lei.
but they made sure of watching her every day.12 Ogni giorno con maggior desiderio cercavano di vederla. Un giorno uno disse all'altro:
One day, having parted with the words, 'Let us go home, then, it is time for the midday meal,' theywent off in different directions,13 "Andiamo pure a casa: è l'ora di desinare" e usciti se ne andarono.
only to retrace their steps and find themselves face to face again. Obliged then to explain, theyadmitted their desire and agreed to look for an opportunity of surprising her alone.14 Ma ritornati indietro, si ritrovarono di nuovo insieme e, domandandosi a vicenda il motivo, confessarono la propria passione. Allora studiarono il momento opportuno di poterla sorprendere sola.
So they waited for a favourable moment; and one day Susanna came as usual, accompanied only bytwo young maidservants. The day was hot and she wanted to bathe in the garden.15 Mentre aspettavano l'occasione favorevole, Susanna entrò, come al solito, con due sole ancelle, nel giardino per fare il bagno, poiché faceva caldo.
There was no one about except the two elders, spying on her from their hiding place.16 Non c'era nessun altro al di fuori dei due anziani nascosti a spiarla.
She said to the servants, 'Bring me some oil and balsam and shut the garden door while I bathe.'17 Susanna disse alle ancelle: "Portatemi l'unguento e i profumi, poi chiudete la porta, perché voglio fare il bagno".
They did as they were told, shutting the garden door and going back to the house by a side entranceto fetch what she had asked for; they knew nothing about the elders, for they had concealed themselves.18 Esse fecero come aveva ordinato: chiusero le porte del giardino ed entrarono in casa dalla porta laterale per portare ciò che Susanna chiedeva, senza accorgersi degli anziani poiché si erano nascosti.
Hardly were the maids gone than the two elders sprang up and rushed upon her.19 Appena partite le ancelle, i due anziani uscirono dal nascondiglio, corsero da lei e le dissero:
'Look,' they said, 'the garden door is shut, no one can see us. We want to have you, so give in andlet us!20 "Ecco, le porte del giardino sono chiuse, nessuno ci vede e noi bruciamo di passione per te; acconsenti e datti a noi.
Refuse, and we shal both give evidence that a young man was with you and that this was why yousent your maids away.'21 In caso contrario ti accuseremo; diremo che un giovane era con te e perciò hai fatto uscire le ancelle".
Susanna sighed. 'I am trapped,' she said, 'whatever I do. If I agree, it means death for me; if I resist, Icannot get away from you.22 Susanna, piangendo, esclamò: "Sono alle strette da ogni parte. Se cedo, è la morte per me; se rifiuto, non potrò scampare dalle vostre mani.
But I prefer to fal innocent into your power than to sin in the eyes of the Lord.'23 Meglio però per me cadere innocente nelle vostre mani che peccare davanti al Signore!".
She then cried out as loud as she could. The two elders began shouting too, putting the blame onher,24 Susanna gridò a gran voce. Anche i due anziani gridarono contro di lei
and one of them ran to open the garden door.25 e uno di loro corse alle porte del giardino e le aprì.
The household, hearing the shouting in the garden, rushed out by the side entrance to see what hadhappened to her.26 I servi di casa, all'udire tale rumore in giardino, si precipitarono dalla porta laterale per vedere che cosa stava accadendo.
Once the elders had told their story, the servants were thoroughly taken aback, since nothing of thissort had ever been said of Susanna.27 Quando gli anziani ebbero fatto il loro racconto, i servi si sentirono molto confusi, perché mai era stata detta una simile cosa di Susanna.
Next day a meeting was held at the house of her husband Joakim. The two elders arrived, ful of theirwicked plea against Susanna, to have her put to death.28 Il giorno dopo, tutto il popolo si adunò nella casa di Ioakìm, suo marito e andarono là anche i due anziani pieni di perverse intenzioni per condannare a morte Susanna.
They addressed the company, 'Summon Susanna daughter of Hilkiah and wife of Joakim.' She wassent for,29 Rivolti al popolo dissero: "Si faccia venire Susanna figlia di Chelkìa, moglie di Ioakìm". Mandarono a chiamarla
and came accompanied by her parents, her children and al her relations.30 ed essa venne con i genitori, i figli e tutti i suoi parenti.
Susanna was very graceful and beautiful to look at;31 Susanna era assai delicata d'aspetto e molto bella di forme;
she was veiled, so the wretches made her unveil in order to feast their eyes on her beauty.32 aveva il velo e quei perversi ordinarono che le fosse tolto per godere almeno così della sua bellezza.
Al her own people were weeping, and so were al the others who saw her.33 Tutti i suoi familiari e amici piangevano.
The two elders stood up, with al the people round them, and laid their hands on her head.34 I due anziani si alzarono in mezzo al popolo e posero le mani sulla sua testa.
Tearful y she turned her eyes to Heaven, her heart confident in God.35 Essa piangendo alzò gli occhi al cielo, con il cuore pieno di fiducia nel Signore.
The elders then spoke, 'While we were walking by ourselves in the garden, this woman arrived withtwo maids. She shut the garden door and then dismissed the servants.36 Gli anziani dissero: "Mentre noi stavamo passeggiando soli nel giardino, è venuta con due ancelle, ha chiuse le porte del giardino e poi ha licenziato le ancelle.
A young man, who had been hiding, went over to her and they lay together.37 Quindi è entrato da lei un giovane che era nascosto, e si è unito a lei.
From the end of the garden where we were, we saw this crime taking place and hurried towardsthem.38 Noi che eravamo in un angolo del giardino, vedendo una tale nefandezza, ci siamo precipitati su di loro e li abbiamo sorpresi insieme.
Though we saw them together, we were unable to catch the man: he was too strong for us; heopened the door and took to his heels.39 Non abbiamo potuto prendere il giovane perché, più forte di noi, ha aperto la porta ed è fuggito.
We did, however, catch this woman and ask her who the young man was.40 Abbiamo preso lei e le abbiamo domandato chi era quel giovane, ma lei non ce l'ha voluto dire. Di questo noi siamo testimoni".
She refused to tel us. That is our evidence.' Since they were elders of the people and judges, theassembly accepted their word: Susanna was condemned to death.41 La moltitudine prestò loro fede poiché erano anziani e giudici del popolo e la condannò a morte.
She cried out as loud as she could, 'Eternal God, you know all secrets and everything before ithappens;42 Allora Susanna ad alta voce esclamò: "Dio eterno, che conosci i segreti, che conosci le cose prima che accadano,
you know that they have given false evidence against me. And now I must die, innocent as I am ofeverything their malice has invented against me!'43 tu lo sai che hanno deposto il falso contro di me! Io muoio innocente di quanto essi iniquamente hanno tramato contro di me".
The Lord heard her cry44 E il Signore ascoltò la sua voce.
and, as she was being led away to die, he roused the holy spirit residing in a young boy called Daniel45 Mentre Susanna era condotta a morte, il Signore suscitò il santo spirito di un giovanetto, chiamato Daniele,
who began to shout, 'I am innocent of this woman's death!'46 il quale si mise a gridare: "Io sono innocente del sangue di lei!".
At this al the people turned to him and asked, 'What do you mean by that?'47 Tutti si voltarono verso di lui dicendo: "Che vuoi dire con le tue parole?".
Standing in the middle of the crowd, he replied, 'Are you so stupid, children of Israel, as to condemna daughter of Israel unheard, and without troubling to find out the truth?48 Allora Daniele, stando in mezzo a loro, disse: "Siete così stolti, Israeliti? Avete condannato a morte una figlia d'Israele senza indagare la verità!
Go back to the scene of the trial: these men have given false evidence against her.'49 Tornate al tribunale, perché costoro hanno deposto il falso contro di lei".
Al the people hurried back, and the elders said to Daniel, 'Come and sit with us and tell us what youmean, since God has given you the gifts that elders have.'50 Il popolo tornò subito indietro e gli anziani dissero a Daniele: "Vieni, siedi in mezzo a noi e facci da maestro, poiché Dio ti ha dato il dono dell'anzianità".
Daniel said, 'Keep the men wel apart from each other, for I want to question them.'51 Daniele esclamò: "Separateli bene l'uno dall'altro e io li giudicherò".
When the men had been separated, Daniel had one of them brought to him. 'You have grown old inwickedness,' he said, 'and now the sins of your earlier days have overtaken you,52 Separati che furono, Daniele disse al primo: "O invecchiato nel male! Ecco, i tuoi peccati commessi in passato vengono alla luce,
you with your unjust judgements, your condemnation of the innocent, your acquittal of the guilty, although the Lord has said, "You must not put the innocent and upright to death."53 quando davi sentenze ingiuste opprimendo gli innocenti e assolvendo i malvagi, mentre il Signore ha detto: Non ucciderai il giusto e l'innocente.
Now then, since you saw her so clearly, tel me what sort of tree you saw them lying under.' Hereplied, 'Under an acacia tree.'54 Ora dunque, se tu hai visto costei, di': sotto quale albero tu li hai visti stare insieme?". Rispose: "Sotto un lentisco".
Daniel said, 'Indeed! Your lie recoils on your own head: the angel of God has already received fromhim your sentence and wil cut you in half.'55 Disse Daniele: "In verità, la tua menzogna ricadrà sulla tua testa. Già l'angelo di Dio ha ricevuto da Dio la sentenza e ti spaccherà in due".
He dismissed the man, ordered the other to be brought and said to him, 'Son of Canaan, not ofJudah, beauty has seduced you, lust has led your heart astray!56 Allontanato questo, fece venire l'altro e gli disse: "Razza di Canaan e non di Giuda, la bellezza ti ha sedotto, la passione ti ha pervertito il cuore!
This is how you have been behaving with the daughters of Israel, and they have been too frightenedto resist; but here is a daughter of Judah who could not stomach your wickedness!57 Così facevate con le donne d'Israele ed esse per paura si univano a voi. Ma una figlia di Giuda non ha potuto sopportare la vostra iniquità.
Now then, tel me what sort of tree you surprised them under.' He replied, 'Under an aspen tree.'58 Dimmi dunque, sotto quale albero li hai trovati insieme?". Rispose: "Sotto un leccio".
Daniel said, 'Indeed! Your lie recoils on your own head: the angel of God is waiting with a sword torend you in half, and destroy the pair of you.'59 Disse Daniele: "In verità anche la tua menzogna ti ricadrà sulla testa. Ecco l'angelo di Dio ti aspetta con la spada in mano per spaccarti in due e così farti morire".
Then the whole assembly shouted, blessing God, the Saviour of those who trust in him.60 Allora tutta l'assemblea diede in grida di gioia e benedisse Dio che salva coloro che sperano in lui.
And they turned on the two elders whom Daniel had convicted of false evidence out of their ownmouths.61 Poi insorgendo contro i due anziani, ai quali Daniele aveva fatto confessare con la loro bocca di aver deposto il falso, fece loro subire la medesima pena alla quale volevano assoggettare il prossimo
As the Law of Moses prescribes, they were given the same punishment as they had schemed toinflict on their neighbour. They were put to death. And thus, that day, an innocent life was saved.62 e applicando la legge di Mosè li fece morire. In quel giorno fu salvato il sangue innocente.
Hilkiah and his wife gave thanks to God for their daughter Susanna, and so did her husband Joakimand all his relations, because she had been acquitted of anything dishonourable.63 Chelkìa e sua moglie resero grazie a Dio per la figlia Susanna insieme con il marito Ioakìm e tutti i suoi parenti, per non aver trovato in lei nulla di men che onesto.
From that day onwards, Daniel's reputation stood high with the people.64 Da quel giorno in poi Daniele divenne grande di fronte al popolo.
