Sirach 38

NEW JERUSALEM	BIBBIA
1 Treat the doctor with the honour that is his due, in consideration of his services; for he too has beencreated by the Lord.	1 Onora il medico come si deve secondo il bisogno, anch'egli è stato creato dal Signore.
2 Healing itself comes from the Most High, like a gift received from a king.	2 Dall'Altissimo viene la guarigione, anche dal re egli riceve doni.
3 The doctor's learning keeps his head high, and the great regard him with awe.	3 La scienza del medico lo fa procedere a testa alta, egli è ammirato anche tra i grandi.
4 The Lord has brought forth medicinal herbs from the ground, and no one sensible wil despise them.	4 Il Signore ha creato medicamenti dalla terra, l'uomo assennato non li disprezza.
5 Did not a piece of wood once sweeten the water, thus giving proof of its power?	5 L'acqua non fu forse resa dolce per mezzo di un legno, per rendere evidente la potenza di lui?
6 He has also given some people knowledge, so that they may draw credit from his mighty works.	6 Dio ha dato agli uomini la scienza perché potessero gloriarsi delle sue meraviglie.
7 He uses these for healing and relieving pain; the druggist makes up a mixture from them.	7 Con esse il medico cura ed elimina il dolore e il farmacista prepara le miscele.
8 Thus, there is no end to his activities; thanks to him, well-being exists throughout the world.	8 Non verranno meno le sue opere! Da lui proviene il benessere sulla terra.
9 My child, when you are il , do not rebel, but pray to the Lord and he wil heal you.	9 Figlio, non avvilirti nella malattia, ma prega il Signore ed egli ti guarirà.
10 Renounce your faults, keep your hands unsoiled, and cleanse your heart from al sin.	10 Purìficati, lavati le mani; monda il cuore da ogni peccato.
11 Offer incense and a memorial of fine flour, make as rich an offering as you can afford.	11 Offri incenso e un memoriale di fior di farina e sacrifici pingui secondo le tue possibilità.
12 Then let the doctor take over -- the Lord created him too -- do not let him leave you, for you need him.	12 Fa' poi passare il medico - il Signore ha creato anche lui - non stia lontano da te, poiché ne hai bisogno.
13 There are times when good health depends on doctors.	13 Ci sono casi in cui il successo è nelle loro mani.
14 For they, in their turn, wil pray the Lord to grant them the grace to relieve and to heal, and so prolongyour life.	14 Anch'essi pregano il Signore perché li guidi felicemente ad alleviare la malattia e a risanarla, perché il malato ritorni alla vita.
15 Whoever sins in the eyes of his Maker, let such a one come under the care of the doctor!	15 Chi pecca contro il proprio creatore cada nelle mani del medico.
16 My child, shed tears over the dead, lament for the dead to show your sorrow, then bury the body withdue ceremony and do not fail to honour the grave.	16 Figlio, versa lacrime sul morto, e come uno che soffre crudelmente inizia il lamento; poi seppelliscine il corpo secondo il suo rito e non trascurare la sua tomba.
17 Weep bitterly, beat your breast, observe the mourning the dead deserves for a day or two, to avoidcensorious comment, and then be comforted in your sorrow;	17 Piangi amaramente e alza il tuo lamento, il lutto sia proporzionato alla sua dignità, un giorno o due, per prevenire le dicerie, quindi consòlati del tuo dolore.
18 for grief can lead to death, a grief-stricken heart loses al energy.	18 Difatti il dolore precede la morte, il dolore del cuore logora la forza.
19 In affliction sorrow persists, a life of grief is hard to bear.	19 In una disgrazia resta a lungo il dolore, una vita di miseria è dura al cuore.
20 Do not abandon your heart to grief, drive it away, bear your own end in mind.	20 Non abbandonare il tuo cuore al dolore; scaccialo pensando alla tua fine.
21 Do not forget, there is no coming back; you cannot help the dead, and you will harm yourself.	21 Non dimenticare: non ci sarà infatti ritorno; al morto non gioverai e farai del male a te stesso.
22 'Remember my doom, since it will be yours too; I yesterday, you today!'	22 Ricòrdati della mia sorte che sarà anche la tua: "Ieri a me e oggi a te".
23 Once the dead are laid to rest, let their memory rest, do not fret for them, once their spirit departs.	23 Nel riposo del morto lascia riposare anche il suo ricordo; consòlati di lui, ora che il suo spirito è partito.
24 Leisure gives the scribe the chance to acquire wisdom; a man with few commitments can grow wise.	24 La sapienza dello scriba si deve alle sue ore di quiete; chi ha poca attività diventerà saggio.
25 How can the ploughman become wise, whose sole ambition is to wield the goad, driving his oxen,engrossed in their work, his conversation limited to bul ocks,	25 Come potrà divenir saggio chi maneggia l'aratro e si vanta di brandire un pungolo? Spinge innanzi i buoi e si occupa del loro lavoro e parla solo di vitelli?
26 his thoughts absorbed in the furrows he traces and his long evenings spent in fattening heifers?	26 Pone la sua mente a tracciare solchi, non dorme per dare il foraggio alle giovenche.
27 Similarly with al workmen and craftsmen, toiling day and night; those who engrave seals, for evertrying to think of a new design, concentrating on catching a good likeness and staying up late to get the workdone.	27 Così ogni artigiano e ogni artista che passa la notte come il giorno: quelli che incidono incisioni per sigilli e con pazienza cercano di variare l'intaglio; pongono mente a ritrarre bene il disegno e stanno svegli per terminare il lavoro.
28 Similarly with the blacksmith sitting by his anvil; he considers what to do with the pig-iron, the breath ofthe fire scorches his skin, as he contends with the heat of the furnace; the noise of the hammer deafens him, hiseyes are fixed on the pattern; he concentrates on getting the job done wel and stays up late to apply thefinishing touches.	28 Così il fabbro siede davanti all'incudine ed è intento ai lavori del ferro: la vampa del fuoco gli strugge le carni, e col calore del fornello deve lottare; il rumore del martello gli assorda gli orecchi, i suoi occhi sono fissi al modello dell'oggetto, è tutto preoccupato per finire il suo lavoro, sta sveglio per rifinirlo alla perfezione.
29 Similarly with the potter, sitting at his work, turning the wheel with his feet; constantly on the alert overhis work, each flick of the finger premeditated;	29 Così il vasaio seduto al suo lavoro gira con i piedi la ruota, è sempre in ansia per il suo lavoro; tutti i suoi gesti sono calcolati.
30 he pummels the clay with his arm, and with his feet he kneads it; he concentrates on applying theglaze right and stays up late to clean the kiln.	30 Con il braccio imprime una forma all'argilla, mentre con i piedi ne piega la resistenza; è preoccupato per una verniciatura perfetta, sta sveglio per pulire il fornello.
31 Al these people rely on their hands and each is skilled at his own craft.	31 Tutti costoro hanno fiducia nelle proprie mani; ognuno è esperto nel proprio mestiere.
32 A town could not be inhabited without them, there would be no settling, no travel ing.	32 Senza di loro sarebbe impossibile costruire una città; gli uomini non potrebbero né abitarvi né circolare.
33 But you wil not find them in the parliament, they do not hold high rank in the assembly. They do not siton the judicial bench, and they do not meditate on the Law.	33 Ma essi non sono ricercati nel consiglio del popolo, nell'assemblea non hanno un posto speciale, non siedono sul seggio del giudice, non conoscono le disposizioni del giudizio.
34 They are not remarkable for their culture or judgement, nor are they found frequenting thephilosophers. They sustain the structure of the world, and their prayer is concerned with their trade.	34 Non fanno brillare né l'istruzione né il diritto, non compaiono tra gli autori di proverbi; ma sostengono le cose materiali, e la loro preghiera riguarda i lavori del mestiere.
