NEW JERUSALEMBIBBIA
At about this time, Antiochus was preparing for his second attack on Egypt.1 In questo periodo di tempo Antioco organizzò la seconda spedizione in Egitto.
It then happened that al over the city for nearly forty days there were apparitions of horsemengalloping through the air in cloth of gold, troops of lancers ful y armed,2 Sopra tutta la città per circa quaranta giorni apparivano cavalieri che correvano per l'aria con auree vesti, armati di lance roteanti e di spade sguainate,
squadrons of cavalry in order of battle, attacks and charges this way and that, a flourish of shields, aforest of pikes, a brandishing of swords, a hurling of missiles, a glittering of golden accoutrements and armour of al kinds.3 e schiere di cavalieri disposti a battaglia e attacchi e scontri vicendevoli e trambusto di scudi e selve di aste e lanci di frecce e bagliori di bardature d'oro e corazze d'ogni specie.
So everyone prayed that this manifestation might prove a good omen.4 Per questo tutti pregarono che l'apparizione fosse di buon augurio.
Then, on the strength of a false report that Antiochus was dead, Jason took at least a thousand menand launched an unexpected attack on the city. When the wal s had been breached and the city was final y onthe point of being taken, Menelaus took refuge in the Citadel.5 Essendosi diffusa la falsa notizia che Antioco era passato all'altra vita, Giàsone, prendendo con sé non meno di mille uomini, sferrò un assalto alla città. Si accese la lotta sulle mura e, quando la città era ormai presa, Menelao si rifugiò nell'acròpoli.
Jason, however, made a pitiless slaughter of his fel ow-citizens, oblivious of the fact that successagainst his own countrymen was the greatest of disasters, but rather picturing himself as winning trophies fromsome enemy, and not from his fel ow- countrymen.6 Giàsone fece strage dei propri concittadini senza pietà, non comprendendo che un successo contro i propri connazionali era il massimo insuccesso, e credendo di riportare trofei sui nemici e non sulla propria gente.
Even so, he did not manage to seize power; and, in the end, his machinations brought him nothing butshame, and he took refuge once more in Ammanitis.7 Non riuscì però ad impadronirsi del potere e alla fine, conscio della vergogna del tradimento, corse di nuovo a rifugiarsi nell'Ammanìtide.
His career of wickedness was thus brought to a halt: imprisoned by Aretas, the Arab despot, escapingfrom his town, hunted by everyone, detested for having overthrown the laws, abhorred as the butcher of hiscountry and his countrymen, he drifted to Egypt.8 Da ultimo incontrò una pessima sorte. Imprigionato presso Areta, re degli Arabi, fuggendo poi di città in città, perseguitato da tutti e odiato come traditore delle leggi, riguardato con orrore come carnefice della patria e dei concittadini, fu spinto in Egitto;
He who had exiled so many from their fatherland, himself perished on foreign soil, having travel ed toSparta, hoping that, for kinship's sake, he might find harbour there.9 colui che aveva mandato in esilio numerosi figli della sua patria morì presso gli Spartani, fra i quali si era ridotto quasi a cercare riparo in nome della comunanza di stirpe.
So many carcases he had thrust out to lie unburied; now he himself had none to mourn him, nofuneral rites, no place in the tomb of his ancestors.10 E ancora, colui che aveva lasciato insepolta una moltitudine di gente, finì non pianto da alcuno, privo di esequie ed escluso dal sepolcro dei suoi padri.
When the king came to hear of what had happened, he concluded that Judaea was in revolt. Hetherefore marched from Egypt, raging like a wild beast, and began by storming the city.11 Quando il re venne a conoscenza di questi fatti, concluse che la Giudea stava ribellandosi. Perciò tornando dall'Egitto, furioso come una belva, prese la città con le armi
He then ordered his soldiers to cut down without mercy everyone they encountered, and to butcher allwho took refuge in their houses.12 e diede ordine ai soldati di colpire senza risparmio quanti capitavano e di uccidere quelli che si rifugiavano nelle case.
It was a massacre of young and old, a slaughter of women and children, a butchery of young girls andinfants.13 Vi fu massacro di giovani e di vecchi, sterminio di uomini, di donne e di fanciulli, stragi di fanciulle e di bambini.
There were eighty thousand victims in the course of those three days, forty thousand dying byviolence and as many again being sold into slavery.14 Ottantamila in quei tre giorni furono spacciati, quarantamila nel corso della lotta e in numero non inferiore agli uccisi furono quelli venduti schiavi.
Not content with this, he had the audacity to enter the holiest Temple in the entire world, withMenelaus, that traitor to the laws and to his country, as his guide;15 Non sazio di questo, Antioco osò entrare nel tempio più santo di tutta la terra, avendo a guida quel Menelao che si era fatto traditore delle leggi e della patria,
with impure hands he seized the sacred vessels; with impious hands he seized the offeringspresented by other kings for the aggrandisement, glory and dignity of the holy place.16 e afferrò con empie mani gli arredi sacri; quanto dagli altri re era stato deposto per l'abbellimento e lo splendore del luogo e per segno d'onore, egli lo saccheggiò con le sue mani sacrileghe.
Holding so high an opinion of himself, Antiochus did not realise that the Lord was temporarily angry atthe sins of the inhabitants of the city, hence his unconcern for the holy place.17 Antioco si inorgoglì, non comprendendo che il Signore si era sdegnato per breve tempo a causa dei peccati degli abitanti della città e per questo c'era stato l'abbandono di quel luogo.
Had they not been entangled in many sins, Antiochus too, like Heliodorus when King Seleucus senthim to inspect the Treasury, would have been flogged the moment he arrived and checked in his presumption.18 Se il popolo non si fosse trovato implicato in molti peccati, come era avvenuto per Eliodòro, mandato dal re Seleuco a ispezionare la camera del tesoro, anche costui al suo ingresso sarebbe stato colpito da flagelli e sarebbe stato distolto dalla sua audacia.
The Lord, however, had not chosen the people for the sake of the holy place, but the holy place forthe sake of the people;19 Ma il Signore aveva eletto non già il popolo a causa di quel luogo, ma quel luogo a causa del popolo.
and so the holy place itself, having shared the disasters that befel the people, in due course alsoshared their good fortune; having been abandoned by the Almighty in his anger, once the great Sovereign wasplacated it was reinstated in al its glory.20 Perciò anche il luogo, dopo essere stato coinvolto nelle sventure piombate sul popolo, da ultimo ne condivise i benefici; esso, che per l'ira dell'Onnipotente aveva sperimentato l'abbandono, per la riconciliazione del grande Sovrano fu ripristinato in tutta la sua gloria.
Antiochus, having extracted eighteen hundred talents from the Temple, hurried back to Antioch; in hispride he would have undertaken to make the dry land navigable and the sea passable on foot, so high hisarrogance soared.21 Antioco dunque portando via dal tempio milleottocento talenti d'argento, fece ritorno in fretta ad Antiochia, convinto nella sua superbia di aver reso navigabile la terra e transitabile il mare, per effetto del suo orgoglio.
But he left officials behind to plague the nation: in Jerusalem, Philip, a Phrygian by race, and bynature more barbarous than the man who appointed him;22 Egli lasciò sovrintendenti per opprimere la nazione: in Gerusalemme Filippo, frigio di stirpe, ma nei modi più barbaro di chi l'aveva nominato;
on Mount Gerizim, Andronicus; and, besides these, Menelaus, who lorded it over his countrymenworse than al the others. In his rooted hostility to the Jews,23 sul Garizim Andronìco; oltre a loro Menelao, il quale più degli altri era altezzoso con i concittadini, nutrendo una ostilità dichiarata contro i Giudei.
the king also sent the Mysarch Apollonius at the head of an army twenty-two thousand strong, withorders to put to death al men in their prime and to sel the women and children.24 Mandò poi il misarca Apollonio con un esercito di ventiduemila uomini, e con l'ordine di uccidere quanti erano in età adulta e di vendere le donne e i fanciulli.
Arriving in Jerusalem and posing as a man of peace, this man waited until the holy day of the Sabbathand then, taking advantage of the Jews as they rested from work, ordered his men to parade ful y armed;25 Costui, giunto a Gerusalemme e fingendo intenzioni pacifiche, si tenne quieto fino al giorno sacro del sabato. Allora sorpresi i Giudei in riposo, comandò ai suoi una parata militare
al those who came out to watch he put to the sword; then, rushing into the city with his armed troops,he cut down an immense number of people.26 e trucidò quanti uscivano per assistere alla festa; poi, scorrendo con gli armati per la città, mise a morte un gran numero di persone.
Judas, also known as Maccabaeus, however, with about nine others, withdrew into the desert. Helived like the wild animals in the hil s with his companions, eating nothing but wild plants to avoid contractingdefilement.27 Ma Giuda, chiamato anche Maccabeo, che faceva parte di un gruppo di dieci, si ritirò nel deserto, vivendo tra le montagne alla maniera delle fiere insieme a quelli che erano con lui; e vivevano cibandosi di alimenti erbacei, per non contrarre contaminazione.
