NEW JERUSALEMBIBBIA
The Simon mentioned above as the informer against the funds and against his country beganslandering Onias, insinuating that the latter had been responsible for the assault on Heliodorus and himself hadcontrived this misfortune.1 Il suddetto Simone, che si era fatto delatore dei beni e della patria, diffamava Onia, come se avesse percosso Eliodòro e fosse stato l'organizzatore dei disordini;
Simon now had the effrontery to name this benefactor of the city, this protector of his compatriots, thiszealot for the laws, as an enemy of the public good.2 osava definire nemico della cosa pubblica il benefattore della città, il protettore dei cittadini, il difensore delle leggi.
This hostility reached such proportions that murders were actual y committed by some of Simon'sagents,3 L'odio era giunto a tal punto che si compirono delle uccisioni da parte di uno dei gregari di Simone;
and at this point Onias, recognising how mischievous this rivalry was, and aware that Apol onius son ofMenestheus, the general commanding Coele-Syria and Phoenicia, was encouraging Simon in his malice,4 allora Onia, vedendo l'aggravarsi dell'invidia e accorgendosi che Apollonio figlio di Menèsteo, stratega della Celesira e della Fenicia, aizzava la perfidia di Simone,
went to see the king, not to play the accuser of his fel ow-citizens, but having the public and privatewelfare of the entire people at heart.5 si recò dal re, non per far la parte di accusatore dei suoi concittadini, ma per provvedere al bene comune del popolo e di ciascuno in particolare.
He saw that, without some intervention by the king, an orderly administration would no longer bepossible, nor would Simon put a stop to his fol y.6 Vedeva infatti che senza un provvedimento del re era impossibile ristabilire la pace nella vita pubblica e che Simone non avrebbe messo freno alla sua pazzia.
When Seleucus had departed this life and Antiochus styled Epiphanes had succeeded to the kingdom,Jason, brother of Onias, usurped the high priesthood:7 Ma, Selèuco essendo passato all'altra vita e avendo preso le redini del governo Antioco chiamato anche Epìfane, Giàsone, fratello di Onia, volle procurarsi con la corruzione il sommo sacerdozio
he approached the king with a promise of three hundred and sixty talents of silver, with eighty talents tocome from some other source of revenue.8 e, in un incontro con il re, gli promise trecentosessanta talenti d'argento e altri ottanta talenti riscossi con un'altra entrata.
He further committed himself to paying another hundred and fifty, if the king would empower him to setup a gymnasium and youth centre, and to register the Antiochists of Jerusalem.9 Oltre a questi prometteva di versargli altri centocinquanta talenti, se gli fosse stato concesso di stabilire di sua autorità una palestra e un campo d'addestramento e di erigere una corporazione d'Antiocheni a Gerusalemme.
When the king gave his assent, Jason, as soon as he had seized power, imposed the Greek way oflife on his fel ow-countrymen.10 Avendo il re acconsentito, egli, ottenuto il potere, si diede subito a trasformare i suoi connazionali secondo i costumi greci,
He suppressed the liberties which the kings had graciously granted to the Jews at the instance ofJohn, father of that Eupolemus who was later to be sent on an embassy to negotiate a treaty of friendship andal iance with the Romans and, overthrowing the lawful institutions, introduced new usages contrary to the Law.11 annullando i favori concessi dal re ai Giudei, ad opera di Giovanni, padre di quell'Eupolemo che aveva guidato l'ambasciata presso i Romani per negoziare il patto d'amicizia e di alleanza, e sradicando le leggi cittadine inaugurò usanze perverse.
He went so far as to found a gymnasium at the very foot of the Citadel, and to fit out the noblest of hisyoung men in the petasos.12 Fu subito zelante nel costruire una palestra, proprio ai piedi dell'acròpoli, e nell'indurre i giovani più distinti a portare il pètaso.
Godless wretch that he was and no true high priest, Jason set no bounds to his impiety; indeed thehellenising process reached such a pitch13 Così era raggiunto il colmo dell'ellenizzazione e la diserzione verso i costumi stranieri per l'eccessiva corruzione dell'empio e falso sommo sacerdote Giàsone.
that the priests ceased to show any interest in serving the altar; but, scorning the Temple andneglecting the sacrifices, they would hurry, on the stroke of the gong, to take part in the distribution, forbidden bythe Law, of the oil on the exercise ground;14 Perciò i sacerdoti non erano più premurosi del servizio all'altare, ma, disprezzando il tempio e trascurando i sacrifici, si affrettarono a partecipare agli spettacoli contrari alla legge nella palestra, appena dato il segnale del lancio del disco.
setting no store by the honours of their fatherland, they esteemed hel enic glories best of al .15 Così tenendo in poco conto le glorie patrie stimavano nobilissime le glorie elleniche.
But al this brought its own retribution; the very people whose way of life they envied, whom theysought to resemble in everything, proved to be their enemies and executioners.16 Ma appunto a causa di queste li sorprese una grave situazione e si ebbero quali avversari e punitori proprio coloro le cui istituzioni seguivano con zelo e a cui cercavano di rassomigliare in tutto.
It is no smal thing to violate the divine laws, as the period that fol owed wil demonstrate.17 Non è cosa che resti impunita il comportarsi empiamente contro le leggi divine, come dimostrerà chiaramente il successivo periodo di tempo.
On the occasion of the quadrennial games at Tyre in the presence of the king,18 Celebrandosi in Tiro i giochi quinquennali con l'intervento del re,
the vile Jason sent an embassy of Antiochists from Jerusalem, taking with them three hundred silverdrachmas for the sacrifice to Hercules. But even those who brought the money did not think it would be right tospend it on the sacrifice and decided to reserve it for some other item of expenditure;19 l'empio Giàsone inviò come rappresentanti alcuni Antiocheni di Gerusalemme, i quali portavano con sé trecento dramme d'argento per il sacrifico a Ercole; ma questi portatori ritennero non conveniente usarle per il sacrifico, bensì impiegarle per altra spesa.
and so what the sender had intended for the sacrifice to Hercules was in fact applied, at thesuggestion of those who brought it, to the construction of triremes.20 Così il denaro destinato al sacrificio a Ercole da parte del mandante, servì, grazie ai portatori, per la costruzione delle triremi.
Apollonius son of Menestheus had been sent to Egypt to attend the wedding of King Philometor.Antiochus, having learnt that the latter had become hostile to his affairs, began thinking about his own safety:that was why he had come to Joppa.
where he was given a magnificent welcome by Jason and the city, and escorted in by torchlight withacclamation. After which, he marched his army into Phoenicia.22 Fu accolto da Giàsone e dalla città con dimostrazioni magnifiche e introdotto con corteo di fiaccole e acclamazioni. Così riprese la marcia militare verso la Fenicia.
When three years had passed, Jason sent Menelaus, brother of the Simon mentioned above, toconvey the money to the king and to complete negotiations on various essential matters.23 Tre anni dopo, Giàsone mandò Menelao, fratello del già menzionato Simone, a portare al re denaro e a presentargli un memoriale su alcuni affari importanti.
But Menelaus, on being presented to the king, flattered him by his own appearance of authority, andso secured the high priesthood for himself, outbidding Jason by three hundred talents of silver.24 Ma quello, fattosi presentare al re e avendolo ossequiato con un portamento da persona autorevole, si accaparrò il sommo sacerdozio, superando l'offerta di Giàsone di trecento talenti d'argento.
He returned with the royal mandate, bringing nothing worthy of the high priesthood and supportedonly by the fury of a cruel tyrant and the rage of a savage beast.25 Munito delle disposizioni del re, si presentò di ritorno, non avendo con sé nulla che fosse degno del sommo sacerdozio, ma avendo le manie di un tiranno unite alla ferocia di una belva.
Thus Jason, who had supplanted his own brother, was in turn supplanted by a third, and obliged totake refuge in Ammanitis.26 Così Giàsone, che aveva tradito il proprio fratello, fu tradito a sua volta da un altro e fu costretto a fuggire nel paese dell'Ammanìtide.
As for Menelaus, he secured the office, but defaulted altogether on the sums promised to the king,27 Menelato si impadronì del potere, ma non s'interessò più del denaro promesso al re,
although Sostratus, the commandant of the Citadel, whose business it was to collect the revenue,kept demanding payment. The pair of them in consequence were summoned before the king,28 sebbene gliele avesse fatto richiesta Sòstrato, comandante dell'acròpoli; questi infatti aveva l'incarico della riscossione dei tributi. Per questo motivo tutti e due furono convocati dal re.
Menelaus leaving his brother Lysimachus as deputy high priest, while Sostratus left Crates, thecommander of the Cypriots, to act for him.29 Menelao lasciò come sostituto nel sommo sacerdozio Lisìmaco suo fratello; Sòstrato lasciò Cratéte, comandante dei Ciprioti.
While al this was going on, it happened that the people of Tarsus and Mal us revolted, because theirtowns had been given as a present to Antiochis, the king's concubine.30 Mentre così stavano le cose, le città di Tarso e Mallo si ribellarono, perché erano state date in dono ad Antiòchide, concubina del re.
The king therefore hurried off to settle the affair, leaving Andronicus, one of his dignitaries, to act ashis deputy.31 Il re partì in fretta per riportare all'ordine la situazione, lasciando come luogotenente Andronìco, uno dei suoi dignitari.
Thinking he had found a favourable opportunity, Menelaus abstracted a number of golden vesselsfrom the Temple and presented them to Andronicus, and managed to sel others to Tyre and the surroundingcities.32 Menelao allora, pensando di aver trovato l'occasione buona, sottrasse alcuni arredi d'oro del tempio e ne fece omaggio ad Andronìco; altri poi si trovò che li aveva venduti a Tiro e nelle città vicine.
On receiving clear evidence to this effect, Onias retired to a place of sanctuary at Daphne nearAntioch and then taxed him with it.33 Ma Onia lo biasimò, dopo essersi accertato della cosa ed essersi rifugiato in località inviolabile a Dafne situata presso Antiochia.
Menelaus then had a quiet word with Andronicus, urging him to get rid of Onias. Andronicus soughtout Onias and, resorting to the trick of offering him his right hand on oath, succeeded in persuading him, despitethe latter's lingering suspicions, to leave sanctuary; whereupon, in defiance of al justice, he immediately put himto death.34 Per questo Menelao, incontratosi in segreto con Andronìco, lo pregò di sopprimere Onia. Quegli, recatosi da Onia e ottenutane con inganno la fiducia, dandogli la destra con giuramento lo persuase, sebbene ancora guardato con sospetto, ad uscire dall'asilo e subito lo uccise senza alcun riguardo alla giustizia.
The result was that not only Jews but many people of other nationalities were appalled and outragedby the unjust murder of this man.35 Per questo fatto non solo i Giudei, ma anche molti altri popoli si mossero a sdegno e tristezza per l'empia uccisione di tanto uomo.
On the king's return from the region of Cilicia, the Jews of the capital, and those Greeks who sharedtheir hatred of the crime, appealed to him about the unjustified murder of Onias.36 Quando il re tornò dalle località della Cilicia, si presentarono a lui i Giudei della città insieme con i Greci che condividevano l'esecrazione dell'uccisione di Onia contro ogni diritto.
Antiochus was profoundly grieved and fil ed with pity, and he wept for the prudence and moderation ofthe dead man.37 Antioco fu intimamente rattristato, colpito da cordoglio e mosso a lacrime per la saggezza e la grande prudenza del defunto;
Burning with indignation, he immediately stripped Andronicus of the purple, tore his garments off himand, parading him through the length of the city, rid the world of the assassin on the very spot where he had laidimpious hands on Onias, the Lord dealing out to him the punishment he deserved.38 subito, acceso di sdegno, tolse la porpora ad Andronìco, ne stracciò le vesti e lo trascinò attraverso tutta la città fino al luogo stesso dove egli aveva sacrilegamente ucciso Onia e là cancellò dal mondo l'assassino. Così il Signore gli rese il meritato castigo.
Now Lysimachus with the connivance of Menelaus had committed many sacrilegious thefts in the city,and when the facts became widely known, the populace rose against Lysimachus, who had already disposed ofmany pieces of gold plate.39 Essendo poi avvenuti molti furti sacrileghi in città da parte di Lisìmaco su istigazione di Menelao ed essendosene sparsa la voce al di fuori, il popolo si ribellò a Lisìmaco, quando già molti arredi d'oro erano stati portati via.
The infuriated mob was becoming menacing, and Lysimachus armed nearly three thousand men andtook aggressive action; the troops were led by a certain Auranus, a man advanced in years and no less in folly.40 La folla era eccitata e piena di furore e Lisìmaco, armati circa tremila uomini, diede inizio ad atti di violenza, mettendo come comandante un certo Aurano già avanzato in età e non meno in stoltezza.
Recognising this act of aggression as the work of Lysimachus, some snatched up stones, otherscudgels, while others scooped up handfuls of ashes lying at hand, and al hurled everything indiscriminately atLysimachus' men,41 Ma quelli, appena si accorsero dell'aggressione di Lisìmaco, afferrarono chi pietre, chi grossi bastoni, altri raccolsero a manciate la polvere sul posto e si gettarono contro coloro che stavano attorno a Lisìmaco.
to such effect that they wounded many of them, even kil ing a few, and routed them all; thesacrilegious thief himself they kil ed near the Treasury.42 A questo modo ne ferirono molti, alcuni ne stesero morti, costrinsero tutti alla fuga, misero a morte lo stesso saccheggiatore del tempio presso la camera del tesoro.
As a result of this, legal proceedings were taken against Menelaus.43 Per questi fatti fu intentato un processo contro Menelao.
When the king came down to Tyre, three men deputed by the Senate pleaded their case before him.44 Venuto il re a Tiro, i tre uomini mandati dal consiglio degli anziani difesero presso di lui il loro diritto.
Menelaus, seeing the case had gone against him, promised a substantial sum to Ptolemy son ofDorymenes if he would influence the king in his favour.45 Menelao, ormai sul punto di essere abbandonato, promise una buona quantità di denaro a Tolomeo, figlio di Dorìmene, perché traesse il re dalla sua parte.
Ptolemy then took the king aside into a colonnade, as though for a breath of fresh air, and persuadedhim to change his mind;46 Tolomeo invitò il re sotto un portico, come per prendere il fresco, e gli fece mutar parere.
the king then dismissed the charges against Menelaus, the cause of al this evil, while he condemnedto death the other poor wretches who, had they pleaded even before Scythians, would have been let off scot-free.47 Così il re prosciolse dalle accuse Menelao, causa di tutto il male, e a quegli infelici che, se avessero discusso la causa anche presso gli Sciti, sarebbero stati prosciolti come innocenti, decretò la pena di morte.
No time was lost in carrying out this unjust punishment on those who had championed the cause ofthe city, the townships and the sacred vessels.48 Così senza dilazione subirono l'ingiusta pena coloro che avevano difeso la città, il popolo e gli arredi sacri.
Some Tyrians even were so outraged by the crime that they provided sumptuously for their funeral,49 Gli stessi cittadini di Tiro, indignati per questo fatto, provvidero generosamente quanto occorreva per la loro sepoltura.
while, as a result of the greed of the powerful, Menelaus remained in power, growing more wickedthan ever and establishing himself as the chief enemy of his fellow-citizens.50 Menelao invece, per la cupidigia dei potenti, rimase al potere, crescendo in malvagità e facendosi grande traditore dei concittadini.
