2 Maccabees 13

1 In the year one hundred and forty-nine, Judas and his men discovered that Antiochus Eupator wasadvancing in force against Judaea,	1 Nell'anno centoquarantanove giunse notizia agli uomini di Giuda che Antioco Eupàtore muoveva contro la Giudea con numerose truppe;
2 and with him Lysias his tutor and chief minister; he had moreover a Greek force of one hundred andten thousand infantry, five thousand three hundred cavalry, twenty-two elephants, and three hundred chariotsfitted with scythes.	2 era con lui Lisia, suo tutore e preposto agli affari dello stato, che aveva con sé un esercito greco di centodiecimila fanti, cinquemilatrecento cavalli, ventidue elefanti e trecento carri falcati.
3 Menelaus, too, joined them and very craftily kept urging Antiochus on, not for the welfare of his owncountry but in the hope of being restored to office.	3 A costoro si unì anche Menelao, il quale incoraggiava con molta astuzia Antioco, non per la salvezza della patria, ma per la speranza di essere rimesso al suo posto di comando.
4 But the King of kings stirred up the anger of Antiochus against the guilty wretch, and when Lysiasmade it clear to the king that Menelaus was the cause of all the troubles, Antiochus gave orders for him to betaken to Beroea and there put to death by the local method of execution.	4 Ma il Re dei re eccitò l'ira di Antioco contro quello scellerato e, quando Lisia ebbe additato costui come causa di tutti i mali, diede ordine che fosse condotto a Berèa e messo a morte secondo l'usanza del luogo.

6 If anyone is convicted of sacrilegious theft or of some other heinous crime, he is taken up to the topand pushed over to perish.	6 Di lassù chi è reo di sacrilegio o chi ha raggiunto gli estremi in certi altri delitti, tutti lo spingono alla morte.
7 In such a manner was the renegade fated to die; Menelaus had not even the privilege of burial.	7 In tal modo l'empio Menelao incontrò la morte e non trovò terra per la sepoltura;
8 Deserved justice, this; since he had committed many sins against the altar, the fire and ashes ofwhich were holy, it was in ashes that he met his death.	8 giusto castigo poiché, dopo aver commesso molti delitti attorno all'altare dov'erano il fuoco sacro e la cenere, nella cenere trovò la sua morte.
9 The king, then, was advancing, his mind filled with barbarous designs, to give the Jews ademonstration of far worse things than anything that had happened under his father.	9 Il re avanzava con barbari sentimenti e con l'intenzione di far provare ai Giudei trattamenti peggiori di quelli che avevano subiti sotto suo padre.
10 When Judas heard of this, he ordered the people day and night to cal on the Lord as never before,to come to the help of those who were in peril of being deprived of the Law, their fatherland and the holy Temple,	10 Quando Giuda seppe queste cose, ordinò al popolo di pregare il Signore giorno e notte, perché, come altre volte, così anche ora aiutasse coloro che erano in pericolo di essere privati della legge, della patria e del tempio santo
11 and not to al ow the people, just when they were beginning to breathe again, to fall into the power ofil -famed foreigners.	11 e non permettesse che il popolo, che aveva appena goduto di un breve respiro, cadesse in mano a quegli infami pagani.
12 When they had al , with one voice, obeyed his instructions and had made their petitions to themerciful Lord, weeping, fasting and prostrating themselves for three days continuously, Judas spoke words ofencouragement and told them to keep close to him.	12 Quando ebbero fatto ciò tutti insieme ed ebbero supplicato il Signore misericordioso con gemiti e digiuni e prostrazioni per tre giorni continui, Giuda li esortò e comandò loro di tenersi preparati.
13 After separate consultation with the elders, he resolved not to wait for the king's army to invadeJudaea and take possession of the city, but to march out and settle the whole matter with the Lord's help.	13 Tenuto poi un convegno a parte con gli anziani, decise che si dovesse, con l'aiuto di Dio, risolvere le cose uscendo a battaglia prima che l'esercito entrasse nella Giudea e si impadronisse della città.
14 Having thus committed the outcome to the Creator of the world, and having exhorted his soldiers tofight bravely to the death for the laws, the Temple, the city, their country and their way of life, he encamped hisarmy near Modein.	14 Affidando poi ogni cura al creatore del mondo, esortò i suoi a combattere da prodi fino alla morte per le leggi, per il tempio, per la città, per la patria, per le loro istituzioni, e pose il campo vicino a Modin.
15 Giving his men the password 'Victory from God', he made a night attack on the king's pavilion with apicked band of the bravest young men. Inside the camp he destroyed about two thousand, and his men cutdown the largest of the elephants with its mahout;	15 Data ai suoi uomini la parola d'ordine "Vittoria di Dio", con giovani valorosi ben scelti, piombò di notte sulla tenda del re nell'accampamento, uccise circa tremila uomini e trafisse il più grosso degli elefanti insieme con l'uomo che era nella torretta
16 having eventual y filled the camp with terror and confusion, they successful y withdrew,	16 e alla fine riempirono tutto il campo di terrore e confusione; poi se ne tornarono ad impresa ben riuscita.
17 just as dawn was breaking. This was achieved, thanks to the protection which the Lord grantedJudas.	17 Quando già spuntava il giorno, la cosa era compiuta, per la protezione del Signore che aveva assistito Giuda.
18 The king, having had a taste of Jewish daring, now tried to capture their positions by trickery.	18 Il re, avuto questo saggio dell'audacia dei Giudei, tentava con l'astuzia la conquista delle posizioni.
19 He advanced on Beth-Zur, a strong fortress of the Jews, but was checked, overcome and sorepulsed.	19 Così si spingeva contro Bet-Zur, una ben munita fortezza dei Giudei, ma veniva respinto, aveva sfortuna e falliva;
20 Judas supplied the garrison with what they needed,	20 mentre Giuda faceva giungere il necessario agli assediati.
21 but Rhodocus, of the Jewish army, supplied the enemy with secret information; the man wasidentified, arrested, and dealt with.	21 Intanto Rodoco, appartenente alle file dei Giudei, aveva rivelato i segreti ai nemici: fu ricercato, preso e tolto di mezzo.
22 A second time, the king parleyed with the garrison of Beth-Zur; he offered and accepted pledges offriendship, retired, then attacked Judas and his men, but lost the battle.	22 Il re tornò a trattare con quelli che erano in Bet-Zur, diede e ricevette la destra di pace e se ne andò. Assalì gli uomini di Giuda ma ebbe la peggio.
23 He was then told that Philip, left in charge of affairs, had rebelled in Antioch. He was stunned by this,opened negotiations with the Jews, came to an agreement, and swore to abide by al reasonable conditions.Agreement reached, he offered a sacrifice, honoured the Temple, and made generous gifts to the holy place.	23 Ricevette poi notizia che Filippo, lasciato in Antiochia a dirigere gli affari, agiva da dissennato e ne rimase sconcertato; invitò i Giudei a trattare, si sottomise, si obbligò con giuramento a rispettare tutte le giuste condizioni, ristabilì l'accordo e offrì un sacrificio, onorò il tempio e beneficò il luogo.
24 He received Maccabaeus kindly and, leaving Hegemonides to exercise command from Ptolemais tothe territory of the Gerrenians,	24 Fece accoglienze al Maccabeo e lasciò Egemònide come stratega da Tolemàide fino al paese dei Gerreni.
25 went to Ptolemais. The inhabitants of the place disapproved of the treaty; they complained furiouslyand wanted to annul its provisions.	25 Venne a Tolemàide, ma i cittadini di Tolemàide si mostrarono malcontenti per quegli accordi; erano irritati contro coloro che avevano voluto abolire i loro privilegi.
26 Lysias mounted the rostrum and made a convincing defence of the provisions which convinced andcalmed them and won their goodwil . He then withdrew to Antioch. So much for the episode of the king'soffensive and retreat.	26 Salì allora sulla tribuna Lisia, fece la sua difesa meglio che poté, li persuase, li calmò, li rese ragionevoli; poi tornò ad Antiochia. Così si svolse la spedizione del re e il suo ritorno.
