NEW JERUSALEMBIBBIA
Maccabaeus and his companions, under the Lord's guidance, restored the Temple and the city,1 Il Maccabeo intanto e i suoi uomini, guidati dal Signore, rioccuparono il tempio e la città,
and pul ed down the altars erected by the foreigners in the market place, as wel as the shrines.2 distrussero le are innalzate dagli stranieri sulle piazze e i recinti sacri.
They purified the sanctuary and built another altar; then, striking fire from flints and using this fire, theyoffered the first sacrifice for two years, burning incense, lighting the lamps and setting out the loaves.3 Purificarono il tempio e vi costruirono un altro altare; poi facendo scintille con le pietre, ne trassero il fuoco e offrirono sacrifici, dopo un'interruzione di due anni; prepararono l'altare degli incensi, le lampade e l'offerta dei pani.
When they had done this, prostrating themselves on the ground, they implored the Lord never againto let them fal into such adversity, but if they should ever sin, to correct them with moderation and not to deliverthem over to blasphemous and barbarous nations.4 Fatto questo, prostrati a terra, supplicarono il Signore, che non li facesse più incorrere in quei mali ma, se mai peccassero ancora, venissero da lui corretti con clemenza, ma non abbandonati in mano a un popolo di barbari e bestemmiatori.
This day of the purification of the Temple fell on the very day on which the Temple had been profanedby the foreigners, the twenty-fifth of the same month, Chislev.5 La purificazione del tempio avvenne nello stesso giorno in cui gli stranieri l'avevano profanato, il venticinque dello stesso mese, cioè di Casleu.
They kept eight festal days with rejoicing, in the manner of the feast of Shelters, remembering how,not long before at the time of the feast of Shelters, they had been living in the mountains and caverns like wildbeasts.6 Con gioia passarono otto giorni come nella festa delle Capanne, ricordando come poco tempo prima avevano passato la feste delle Capanne dispersi sui monti e nelle caverne come animali selvatici.
Then, carrying thyrsuses, leafy boughs and palms, they offered hymns to him who had brought thecleansing of his own holy place to a happy outcome.7 Perciò, tenendo in mano bastoni ornati, rami verdi e palme, innalzavano inni a colui che aveva fatto ben riuscire la purificazione del suo proprio tempio.
They also decreed by public edict, ratified by vote, that the whole Jewish nation should celebratethose same days every year.8 Stabilirono quindi con pubblico decreto e deliberazione per tutto il popolo dei Giudei, che ogni anno si celebrassero questi giorni.
Such were the circumstances attending the death of Antiochus styled Epiphanes.9 Tali furono le vicende riguardanti la morte di Antioco chiamato Epìfane.
Our task now is to unfold the history of Antiochus Eupator, son of that godless man, and briefly torelate the evil effects of the wars.10 Ora invece esporremo le cose accadute sotto Antioco Eupàtore, figlio di quell'empio, sunteggiando le principali sventure connesse alle guerre.
On coming to the throne, this prince put at the head of affairs a certain Lysias, the general officercommanding Coele-Syria and Phoenicia,11 Costui, dunque, succeduto nel regno, nominò capo degli affari politici un certo Lisia, primo stratega della Celesiria e della Fenicia.
whereas Ptolemy, known as Macron, and the first person to govern the Jews justly, had done hisbest to govern them peaceful y to make up for the wrongs inflicted on them in the past.12 Tolomeo, chiamato Macrone, preferendo osservare la giustizia nei riguardi dei Giudei, a causa dei torti che erano stati fatti loro, cercava di svolgere i rapporti con loro pacificamente.
Denounced, in consequence, to Eupator by the Friends of the King, he heard himself cal ed traitor atevery turn: for having abandoned Cyprus, which had been entrusted to him by Philometer, for having gone overto Antiochus Epiphanes, and for having shed no lustre on his il ustrious office: he committed suicide by poisoninghimself.13 Per questo motivo fu accusato dagli amici presso l'Eupàtore ed egli, sentendosi spesso chiamare traditore per aver abbandonato Cipro a lui affidata dal Filomètore ed essere passato dalla parte di Antioco Epìfane, né potendo esercitare con onore la carica, preso il veleno, pose fine alla propria vita.
Gorgias now became general of the area; he maintained a force of mercenaries and a continualstate of war with the Jews.14 Gorgia, divenuto stratega della regione, assoldava stranieri e teneva viva la guerra contro i Giudei.
At the same time, the Idumaeans, who controlled important fortresses, were harassing the Jews, welcoming outlaws from Jerusalem and endeavouring to maintain a state of war.15 Insieme con lui anche gli Idumei, che occupavano fortezze strategiche, lottavano contro i Giudei e, dando asilo a tutti i fuorusciti da Gerusalemme, cominciarono a fomentare la guerra.
Maccabaeus and his men, after making public supplication to God, entreating him to support them, began operations against the Idumaean fortresses.16 Pertanto gli uomini del Maccabeo, dopo aver innalzato preghiere e supplicato Dio che si facesse loro alleato, mossero contro le fortezze degli Idumei
Vigorously pressing home their attack, they seized possession of these vantage points, beating offal who fought on the ramparts; they slaughtered al who fel into their hands, accounting for no fewer than twentythousand.17 e, attaccandole con energia, si impadronirono delle posizioni, respinsero quelli che combattevano sulle mura e uccisero quanti erano venuti a tiro; ne uccisero così non meno di ventimila.
Nine thousand at least took refuge in two exceptional y strong towers with everything they needed towithstand a siege,18 Non meno di novemila tuttavia fuggirono in due torri fortificate a regola d'arte e fornite di tutto l'occorrente per sostenere l'assedio.
whereupon, Maccabaeus left Simon and Joseph, with Zacchaeus and his forces, in sufficientnumbers to besiege them, and himself went off to other places requiring his attention.19 Allora il Maccabeo, lasciando Simone e Giuseppe e inoltre Zaccheo e i suoi uomini, sufficienti per quell'assedio, si recò in zone più critiche.
But Simon's men were greedy for money and al owed themselves to be bribed by some of the menin the towers; accepting seventy thousand drachmas, they let a number of them escape.20 Ma gli uomini di Simone, vinti dalla prospettiva del guadagno, si lasciarono persuadere per denaro da alcuni che erano nelle torri e, ricevute settantamila dramme, ne lasciarono fuggire alcuni.
When Maccabaeus was told what had happened, he summoned the people's commanders andaccused the offenders of having sold their brothers for money by releasing their enemies to fight them.21 Quando fu riferito al Maccabeo l'accaduto, radunati i capi del popolo, li accusò di aver venduto per denaro i loro fratelli, dando libertà ai loro nemici.
Having executed them as traitors, he at once proceeded to capture both towers.22 Fece giustiziare coloro che si erano resi colpevoli di tradimento e senza indugio espugnò le due torri.
Successful in all that he undertook by force of arms, in these two fortresses he slaughtered morethan twenty thousand men.23 Essendo ben riuscito in tutto con le armi in mano, mise a morte nelle due fortezze più di ventimila uomini.
Timotheus, who had been beaten by the Jews once before, now assembled an enormous force ofmercenaries, mustering cavalry from Asia in considerable numbers, and soon appeared in Judaea, expecting toconquer it by force of arms.24 Timòteo, che prima aveva perduto di fronte ai Giudei, assoldando ora forze straniere in gran numero e radunando la cavalleria dell'Asia, che non era meno numerosa, avanzò con l'intenzione di soggiogare la Giudea con le armi.
At his approach, Maccabaeus and his men made their supplications to God, sprinkling earth on theirheads and putting sackcloth round their waists.25 Gli uomini del Maccabeo al suo avvicinarsi, si cosparsero il capo di polvere per la preghiera a Dio e, cintisi i fianchi di sacco,
Prostrating themselves on the terrace before the altar, they begged him to support them and to showhimself the enemy of their enemies, the adversary of their adversaries, as the Law clearly states.26 si prostrarono sul rialzo davanti all'altare e lo supplicarono che si mostrasse loro propizio e fosse nemico dei loro nemici e avversario dei loro avversari, secondo l'espressione della legge.
After these prayers, they armed themselves and advanced a fair distance from the city, halting whenthey were close to the enemy.27 Terminata la preghiera, presero le armi e uscirono dalla città per un bel tratto. Quando furono vicini ai nemici, si fermarono.
As the first light of dawn began to spread, the two sides joined battle, the one having as their pledgeof success and victory not only their own valour but their recourse to the Lord, the other making their own ardourtheir mainstay in the fight.28 Appena spuntata la luce del mattino, iniziò l'attacco dalle due parti, gli uni avendo a garanzia del successo e della vittoria gloriosa la fiducia nel Signore, gli altri ponendo come guida nel conflitto il loro ardire.
When the battle was at its height, the enemy saw five magnificent men appear from heaven onhorses with golden bridles and put themselves at the head of the Jews;29 Accesasi una lotta durissima, apparvero dal cielo ai nemici cinque uomini splendidi su cavalli dalle briglie d'oro, che guidavano i Giudei.
surrounding Maccabaeus and screening him with their own armour, they kept him unscathed, whilethey rained arrows and thunderbolts on the enemy until, blinded and confused, they scattered in completedisorder.30 Essi presero in mezzo il Maccabeo e, riparandolo con le loro armature, lo rendevano invulnerabile; contro gli avversari invece scagliavano dardi e folgori ed essi, confusi e accecati, si dispersero in preda al disordine.
Twenty thousand five hundred infantry and six hundred cavalry were slaughtered.31 Ne furono uccisi ventimilacinquecento e seicento cavalieri.
Timotheus himself fled to a strongly guarded citadel cal ed Gezer, where Chaereas was incommand.32 Lo stesso Timòteo dovette rifugiarsi nella fortezza chiamata Ghezer, ben munita, dove era comandante Chérea.
For four days Maccabaeus and his men eagerly besieged the fortress,33 Ma i soldati del Maccabeo assediarono con entusiasmo la fortezza per quattro giorni.
while the defenders, confident in the security of the place, hurled fearful blasphemies and godlessinsults at them.34 Gli assediati, fidando delle fortificazioni del luogo, bestemmiavano in modo orribile e lanciavano empie frasi.
At daybreak on the fifth day, twenty young men of Maccabaeus' forces, fired with indignation at theblasphemies, manful y assaulted the wall, with wild courage cutting down everyone they encountered.35 Alle prime luci del quinto giorno, venti giovani del Maccabeo, accesi di sdegno per le bestemmie, prese d'assalto le mura coraggiosamente e con selvaggio furore, travolsero chiunque trovarono.
Others, in a similar scaling operation, took the defenders in the rear, and set fire to the towers, lighting pyres on which they burned the blasphemers alive. The first, meanwhile, breaking open the gates, let therest of the army in and, at their head, captured the town.36 Anche altri, attaccando con una manovra di aggiramento, incendiarono le torri e, accesi dei fuochi, bruciarono vivi i bestemmiatori; altri ancora sfondarono le porte e fatto entrare il resto dell'esercito affrettarono la presa della città.
Timotheus had hidden in a storage-wel , but they kil ed him, with his brother Chaereas, andApol ophanes.37 Uccisero Timòteo che si era nascosto in una buca e il fratello di lui Chérea e Apollòfane.
When al this was over, with hymns and thanksgiving they blessed the Lord, who had shown suchgreat kindness to Israel and given them the victory.38 Terminata l'impresa, con canti e inni di riconoscenza benedicevano il Signore che aveva magnificamente favorito Israele e concesso loro la vittoria.
