1 Maccabees 12

NEW JERUSALEM	BIBBIA
1 When Jonathan saw that circumstances were working in his favour, he sent a select mission to Rometo confirm and renew his treaty of friendship with the Romans.	1 Giònata, vedendo che le circostanze gli erano propizie, scelse uomini adatti e li inviò a Roma per ristabilire e rinnovare l'amicizia con quel popolo.
2 He also sent letters to the same effect to the Spartans and to other places.	2 Anche presso gli Spartani e in altre località inviò lettere sullo stesso argomento.
3 The envoys made their way to Rome, entered the Senate and said, 'Jonathan the high priest and theJewish nation have sent us to renew your treaty of friendship and al iance with them as before.'	3 Partirono dunque per Roma e là entrarono nel consiglio e dissero: "Giònata sommo sacerdote e il popolo dei Giudei ci hanno inviati a rinnovare la comune amicizia e l'alleanza come la prima volta".
4 The Senate gave them letters to the authorities of each place, to procure their safe conduct toJudaea.	4 E i Romani diedero loro lettere di raccomandazione per le autorità dei vari luoghi, perché favorissero il loro ritorno pacifico in Giudea.
5 The fol owing is the copy of the letter Jonathan wrote to the Spartans:	5 Questa è invece la copia della lettera che Giònata scrisse agli Spartani:
6 'Jonathan the high priest, the senate of the nation, the priests and the rest of the Jewish people to theSpartans their brothers, greetings.	6 "Giònata sommo sacerdote e il consiglio degli anziani del popolo e i sacerdoti e tutto il resto del popolo giudaico, agli Spartani loro fratelli salute.
7 'In the past, a letter was sent to Onias, the high priest, from Areios, one of your kings, stating that youare indeed our brothers, as the copy subjoined attests.	7 Già in passato era stata spedita una lettera ad Onia sommo sacerdote da parte di Areo, che regnava fra di voi, con l'attestazione che siete nostri fratelli, come risulta dalla copia annessa.
8 Onias received the envoy with honour, and accepted the letter, in which a clear declaration was made of friendship and al iance.	8 Onia aveva accolto con onore l'inviato e aveva accettato la lettera nella quale vi erano le dichiarazioni di alleanza e di amicizia.
9 For our part, though we have no need of these, having the consolation of the holy books in ourpossession,	9 Noi dunque, pur non avendone bisogno, avendo a conforto le scritture sacre che sono nelle nostre mani,
10 we venture to send to renew our fraternal friendship with you, so that we may not become strangersto you, a long time having elapsed since you last wrote to us.	10 ci siamo indotti a questa missione per rinnovare la fraternità e l'amicizia con voi in modo da non diventare per voi degli estranei; molti anni infatti sono passati da quando mandaste messaggeri a noi.
11 We, for our part, on every occasion, at our festivals and on other appointed days, unfailinglyremember you in the sacrifices we offer and in our prayers, as it is right and fitting to remember brothers.	11 Noi dunque fedelmente in tutte le feste e negli altri giorni prescritti ci ricordiamo di voi nei sacrifici che offriamo e nelle nostre invocazioni, com'è doveroso e conveniente ricordarsi dei fratelli.
12 We rejoice in your renown.	12 Ci rallegriamo della vostra gloria.
13 'We ourselves, however, have had many trials and many wars, the neighbouring kings making waron us.	13 Noi invece siamo stati circondati da tante oppressioni e molte guerre: ci hanno combattuti i re dei paesi vicini,
14 We were unwil ing to trouble you or our other al ies and friends during these wars,	14 ma non abbiamo voluto disturbare né voi né gli altri nostri alleati e amici in queste lotte:
15 since we have the support of Heaven to help us, thanks to which we have been delivered from ourenemies, and they are the ones who have been brought low.	15 abbiamo infatti dal cielo un valido aiuto per il quale noi siamo stati liberati dai nostri nemici ed essi sono stati umiliati.
16 We have therefore chosen Numenius son of Antiochus, and Antipater son of Jason, and sent themto the Romans to renew our former treaty of friendship and alliance,	16 Ora abbiamo designato Numenio figlio di Antioco e Antìpatro figlio di Giàsone e li abbiamo inviati presso i Romani a rinnovare la precedente amicizia e alleanza con loro.
17 and we have ordered them also to visit you, to greet you and deliver you this letter of oursconcerning the renewal of our brotherhood;	17 Abbiamo quindi dato loro disposizioni di passare anche da voi, per salutarvi e consegnarvi la nostra lettera, riguardante la ripresa dei nostri rapporti e la nostra fraternità.
18 we shal be grateful for an answer to it.'	18 Voi dunque farete cosa ottima comunicandoci una risposta su queste cose".
19 The following is the copy of the letter sent to Onias:	19 Segue ora copia della lettera che essi avevano inviato ad Onia:
20 'Areios king of the Spartans, to Onias the high priest, greetings.	20 "Areo, re degli Spartani, a Onia sommo sacerdote salute.
21 'It has been discovered in records regarding the Spartans and Jews that they are brothers, and ofthe race of Abraham.	21 Si è trovato in una scrittura, riguardante gli Spartani e i Giudei, che essi sono fratelli e che discendono dalla stirpe di Abramo.
22 Now that this has come to our knowledge, we shall be obliged if you wil send us news of yourwelfare.	22 Ora, dal momento che siamo venuti a conoscenza di questa cosa, ci farete cosa gradita scrivendoci sui vostri sentimenti di amicizia.
23 Our own message to you is this: your flocks and your possessions are ours, and ours are yours, andwe are instructing our envoys to give you a message to this effect.'	23 Noi intanto vi rispondiamo: I vostri armenti e i vostri averi ci appartengono e i nostri appartengono a voi. Abbiamo quindi disposto perché vi sia riferito in questo senso".
24 Jonathan learned that Demetrius' generals had returned with a larger army than before to make waron him.	24 Giònata ebbe notizia che i generali di Demetrio erano ritornati con forze più numerose di prima per ritentare la guerra contro di lui.
25 He therefore left Jerusalem and went to engage them in the area of Hamath, not giving them thetime to invade his own territory.	25 Egli si mosse da Gerusalemme e andò loro incontro nella regione di Amat, perché non volle dar loro il tempo di entrare nel suo paese.
26 He sent spies into their camp, who told him on their return that the enemy were taking up positionsfor a night attack on the Jews.	26 Mandò nel loro campo delle spie, le quali tornarono annunciando che essi stavano disponendosi per dar loro l'assalto di notte.
27 At sunset, Jonathan ordered his men to keep watch with their weapons at hand, in readiness to fightat any time during the night, and posted advance guards al round the camp.	27 Quando fu il tramonto, Giònata comandò ai suoi di vegliare tutta la notte e di stare con le armi pronte per la battaglia e dispose sentinelle intorno al campo.
28 On learning that Jonathan and his men were ready to fight, the enemy took fright and, with quakinghearts, lit fires in their bivouac and decamped.	28 Ma anche gli avversari seppero che Giònata e i suoi uomini stavano pronti per la battaglia e furon presi da timore ed esitazione d'animo e allora accesero fuochi nel loro campo.
29 Jonathan and his men, watching the glow of the fires, were unaware of their withdrawal untilmorning,	29 Giònata e i suoi uomini non si accorsero di nulla fino al mattino, perché continuavano a vedere il bagliore dei fuochi.
30 and although Jonathan pursued them, he failed to overtake them, for they had already crossed theriver Eleutherus.	30 Allora si diede a inseguire le loro tracce, ma non poté raggiungerli, perché avevano passato il fiume Elèutero.
31 So Jonathan wheeled round on the Arabs cal ed Zabadaeans, beat them and plundered them;	31 Giònata piegò sugli Arabi chiamati Zabadei, li assalì e si impadronì delle loro spoglie.
32 then, breaking camp, he went to Damascus, thus crossing the whole province.	32 Poi ripartì e andò a Damasco e si diede a percorrere tutto il paese.
33 Simon, meanwhile, had also set out and had penetrated as far as Ascalon and the neighbouringtowns. He then turned on Joppa and moved quickly to occupy it,	33 Anche Simone fece una spedizione, marciando fino ad Ascalòna e ai vicini posti di guarnigione, poi piegò su Giaffa e se ne impadronì;
34 for he had heard of their intention to hand over this strong point to the supporters of Demetrius; hestationed a garrison there to hold it.	34 aveva sentito infatti che avevano intenzione di consegnare la fortezza ai partigiani di Demetrio; perciò vi pose una guarnigione per presidiarla.
35 Jonathan, on his return, cal ed a meeting of the elders of the people and decided with them to buildfortresses in Judaea	35 Quando Giònata fu di ritorno, radunò in assemblea gli anziani del popolo e deliberò con loro di costruire fortezze in Giudea,
36 and to heighten the walls of Jerusalem and erect a high barrier between the Citadel and the city, tocut the former off from the city and isolate it, to prevent the occupants from buying or sel ing.	36 di sopraelevare le mura di Gerusalemme e di alzare una grande barriera tra la città e l'Acra per separare questa dalla città affinché fosse isolata, così che non potessero più né comperare né vendere.
37 Rebuilding the city was a co-operative effort: part of the wall over the eastern ravine had fal en down;he restored the quarter called Chaphenatha.	37 Si organizzarono dunque per ricostruire la città e poiché era rovinato parte del muro sul torrente dal lato orientale, Giònata allestì il cosiddetto Kafenata.
38 Simon, meanwhile, rebuilt Adida in the lowlands, fortifying it, and erecting gates with bolts.	38 Simone a sua volta ricostruì Adida nella Sefela fortificandola e applicandovi porte e sbarre.
39 Trypho's ambition was to become king of Asia, assume the crown, and overpower King Antiochus.	39 Intanto Trifone cercava di diventare re dell'Asia, cingere la corona e stendere la mano contro il re Antioco,
40 He was apprehensive that Jonathan might not al ow him to do this, and might even make war onhim, so he set out and came to Beth-Shean, in the hopes of finding some pretext for having him arrested and putto death.	40 ma sospettava che Giònata glielo impedisse e, nel caso, gli muovesse guerra. Perciò cercava di averlo nelle mani e di eliminarlo; si mosse dunque e venne a Beisan.
41 Jonathan went out to intercept him, with forty thousand picked men in battle order, and arrived atBeth-Shean.	41 Giònata gli uscì incontro con quarantamila uomini scelti e inquadrati e venne a Beisan.
42 When Trypho saw him there with a large force, he hesitated to make any move against him.	42 Trifone, vedendo che era venuto con numeroso esercito, si guardò bene dal mettergli le mani addosso.
43 He even received him with honour, commended him to al his friends, gave him presents andordered his friends and his troops to obey him as they would himself.	43 Anzi lo ricevette con molti onori, lo presentò a tutti i suoi amici, gli offrì doni e ordinò ai suoi amici e alle sue truppe di obbedirgli come a lui stesso.
44 He said to Jonathan, 'Why have you given all these people so much trouble, when there is no threatof war between us?	44 Disse a Giònata: "Perché mai hai disturbato tutta questa gente, non essendoci guerra tra di noi?
45 Send them back home; pick yourself a few men as your bodyguard, and come with me to Ptolemais,which I am going to hand over to you, with the other fortresses and the remaining troops and al the officials;after which, I shal take the road for home. This was my purpose in coming here.'	45 Su, dovresti rimandarli alle loro case; tu scegli per te pochi uomini che ti accompagnino e vieni con me a Tolemàide e io la consegnerò a te insieme con le altre fortezze e il resto dell'esercito e tutti i funzionari, poi tornerò indietro e partirò: sono venuto appunto per questo".
46 Jonathan trusted him and did as he said; he dismissed his forces, who went back to Judaea.	46 Giònata, fidatosi di lui, fece quanto aveva detto e rimandò le truppe che tornarono nella Giudea.
47 With him he retained three thousand men, of whom he left two thousand in Galilee, while a thousandaccompanied him.	47 Fece rimanere tremila uomini, di cui duemila lasciò in Galilea e gli altri mille andarono con lui.
48 But as soon as Jonathan had entered Ptolemais, the people of Ptolemais closed the gates, seizedhim, and put al those who had entered with him to the sword.	48 Ma quando Giònata fu entrato in Tolemàide, i cittadini chiusero le porte e si impadronirono di lui e passarono a fil di spada quanti erano entrati con lui.
49 Trypho sent troops and cavalry into Galilee and the Great Plain to destroy all Jonathan's supporters.	49 Trifone mandò poi fanti e cavalli in Galilea e nella grande pianura per liquidare tutti gli uomini di Giònata.
50 These, concluding that he had been taken and had perished with his companions, encouraged oneanother, marching with closed ranks and ready to give battle,	50 Ma essi avevano sentito dire che Giònata era stato catturato e che era finita per lui e per quelli che erano con lui e, incoraggiatisi l'un l'altro, si presentarono inquadrati, pronti alla battaglia.
51 and when their pursuers saw that they would fight for their lives, they turned back.	51 Gli inseguitori li videro decisi a difendere la loro vita e se ne tornarono.
52 Al reached Judaea safe and sound, and there they lamented Jonathan and his companions, beingvery frightened indeed; al Israel was plunged into mourning.	52 Così tutti giunsero senza molestie in Giudea; fecero lutto per Giònata e per quelli della sua scorta e furono presi da grande timore. Tutto Israele si immerse in un lutto profondo.
53 The surrounding nations were al now looking for ways of destroying them: 'They have no leader,'they said, 'no ally; we have only to attack them now, and we shall blot out their very memory from all peoples.'	53 Tutti i popoli intorno a loro cercarono subito di sterminarli, dicendo appunto: "Non hanno più né capo né sostegno: scendiamo ora in guerra contro di loro e cancelleremo anche il loro ricordo dagli uomini".
