NEW JERUSALEMBIBBIA
The king and Haman went to Queen Esther's banquet,1 Il re e Amàn andarono dunque al banchetto con la regina Ester.
and this second day, during the banquet, the king again said to Esther, 'Tel me your request, QueenEsther. I grant it to you. Whatever you want; even if it is half my kingdom, it is yours for the asking.'2 Il re anche questo secondo giorno disse a Ester, mentre si beveva il vino: "Qual è la tua richiesta, regina Ester? Ti sarà concessa. Che desideri? Fosse anche la metà del regno, sarà fatto!".
'If I have found favour in your eyes, O king,' Queen Esther replied, 'and if it please your majesty, grantme my life -- that is my request; and the lives of my people -- that is what I want.3 Allora la regina Ester rispose: "Se ho trovato grazia ai tuoi occhi, o re, e se così piace al re, la mia richiesta è che mi sia concessa la vita e il mio desiderio è che sia risparmiato il mio popolo.
For we have been handed over, my people and I, to destruction, slaughter and annihilation; had wemerely been sold as slaves and servant-girls, I should not have said anything; but in the present case, it wil bebeyond the persecutor's means to make good the loss that the king is about to sustain.'4 Perché io e il mio popolo siamo stati venduti per essere distrutti, uccisi, sterminati. Ora, se fossimo stati venduti per diventare schiavi e schiave, avrei taciuto; ma il nostro avversario non potrebbe riparare al danno fatto al re con la nostra morte".
King Ahasuerus interrupted Queen Esther, 'Who is this man?' he exclaimed. 'Where is the man who hasthought of doing such a thing?'5 Subito il re Assuero disse alla regina Ester: "Chi è e dov'è colui che ha pensato di fare una cosa simile?".
Esther replied, 'The persecutor, the enemy? Why, this wretch Haman!' Haman quaked with terror in thepresence of the king and queen.6 Ester rispose: "L'avversario, il nemico, è quel malvagio di Amàn". Allora Amàn fu preso da terrore alla presenza del re e della regina.
In a rage the king got up from the banquet and went into the palace garden; while Haman, realising thatthe king was determined on his ruin, stayed behind to beg Queen Esther for his life.7 Il re incollerito si alzò dal banchetto e uscì nel giardino della reggia, mentre Amàn rimase per chiedere la grazia della vita alla regina Ester, perché vedeva bene che da parte del re la sua rovina era decisa.
When the king came back from the palace garden into the banqueting hal , he found Haman sprawledacross the couch where Esther was reclining. 'What!' the king exclaimed. 'Is he going to rape the queen in myown palace?' The words were scarcely out of his mouth than a veil was thrown over Haman's face.8 Poi tornò dal giardino della reggia nel luogo del banchetto; intanto Amàn si era prostrato sul divano sul quale si trovava Ester. Allora il re esclamò: "Vuole anche far violenza alla regina, davanti a me, in casa mia?". Non appena questa parola fu uscita dalla bocca del re, posero un velo sulla faccia di Amàn.
In the royal presence, Harbona, one of the officers, said, 'There is that fifty-cubit gal ows, too, whichHaman ran up for Mordecai, who spoke up to the king's great advantage. It is al ready at his house.' 'Hang himon it,' said the king.9 Carbonà, uno degli eunuchi, disse alla presenza del re: "Ecco, è stato perfino rizzato in casa di Amàn un palo alto cinquanta cubiti, che Amàn ha fatto preparare per Mardocheo, il quale aveva parlato per il bene del re". Il re disse: "Impiccatevi lui!".
So Haman was hanged on the gal ows which he had erected for Mordecai, and the king's wrathsubsided.10 Così Amàn fu impiccato al palo che aveva preparato per Mardocheo. E l'ira del re si calmò.
