NEW JERUSALEM	BIBBIA
1 When the uproar of those crowding round the council had subsided, Holofernes, general-in-chief of theAssyrian army, reprimanded Achior in front of the whole crowd of foreigners and Ammonites.	1 Quando si fu calmata l'agitazione degli uomini che presenziavano tutt'intorno al convegno, parlò Oloferne, comandante supremo dell'esercito di Assur, rivolgendosi ad Achior alla presenza di tutta quell'assemblea di stranieri e a tutti i Moabiti:
2 'Achior, who do you think you are, you and the Ephraimite mercenaries, playing the prophet like this withus today, and trying to dissuade us from making war on the people of Israel? You claim their God wil protectthem. And who is God if not Nebuchadnezzar? He himself wil display his power and wipe them off the face ofthe earth, and their God wil certainly not save them.	2 "Chi sei tu, Achior, e i mercenari di Èfraim, per profetare in mezzo a noi come hai fatto oggi e suggerire di non combattere il popolo d'Israele, perché il loro Dio li proteggerà dall'alto? E che altro dio c'è se non Nabucodònosor? Questi invierà la sua forza e li sterminerà dalla terra, né servirà il loro Dio a liberarli.
3 But we, his servants, shal destroy them as easily as a single individual. They can never resist thestrength of our cavalry.	3 Saremo noi suoi servi a spazzarli via come un sol uomo, perché non potranno sostenere l'impeto dei nostri cavalli.
4 We shal burn them all. Their mountains will be drunk with their blood and their plains filled with theircorpses. Far from being able to resist us, every one of them wil die; thus says King Nebuchadnezzar, lord of thewhole world. For he has spoken, and his words will not prove empty.	4 Li bruceremo in casa loro, i loro monti s'inebrieranno del loro sangue, i loro campi si colmeranno dei loro cadaveri, né potrà resistere la pianta dei loro piedi davanti a noi, ma saranno tutti distrutti. Questo dice Nabucodònosor, il signore di tutta la terra: così ha parlato e le sue parole non potranno essere smentite.
5 As for you, Achior, you Ammonite mercenary, who in a rash moment said these words, you wil not seemy face again until the day when I have taken my revenge on this brood from Egypt.	5 Quanto a te, Achior, mercenario di Ammon, che hai detto queste cose nel giorno della tua sventura, non vedrai più la mia faccia da oggi fino a quando farò vendetta di questa razza che viene dall'Egitto.
6 And then the swords of my soldiers and the spears of my officers wil pierce your sides. You wil falamong their wounded, the moment I turn on Israel.	6 Allora il ferro dei miei soldati e la numerosa schiera dei miei ministri trapasserà i tuoi fianchi e tu cadrai fra i loro cadaveri, quando io tornerò a vederti.
7 My servants wil now take you into the hill-country and leave you near one of the towns in the passes;	7 I miei servi ora ti esporranno sulla montagna e ti porranno in una delle città sul percorso;
8 you wil not die, until you share their ruin.	8 non morirai finché non sarai sterminato con loro.
9 No need to look so sad if you cherish the secret hope that they wil not be captured! I have spoken; noneof my words will prove idle.'	9 Ma se speri in cuor tuo che essi non saranno presi, non sia il tuo aspetto così depresso. Ho detto: nessuna mia parola andrà a vuoto".
10 Holofernes having commanded his tent-orderlies to seize Achior, to take him to Bethulia and to handhim over to the Israelites,	10 Allora Oloferne diede ordine ai suoi servi, che erano di turno nella sua tenda, di prendere Achior, di esporlo vicino a Betulia e di abbandonarlo nelle mani degli Israeliti.
11 the orderlies took him, escorted him out of the camp and across the plain, and then, making for the hil -country, reached the springs below Bethulia.	11 I suoi servi lo presero e lo condussero fuori dell'accampamento in aperta campagna, lo menarono dal mezzo della pianura verso la montagna e si trovarono presso le fonti che erano sotto Betulia.
12 As soon as the men of the town sighted them, they snatched up their weapons, left the town and madefor the mountain tops, while al the slingers pelted them with stones to prevent them from coming up.	12 Quando gli uomini della città li scorsero sulla cresta del monte, presero le armi e uscirono dalla città dirigendosi verso la cresta. Tutti i frombolieri occuparono i sentieri di accesso e si misero a lanciare pietre su di loro.
13 However, they managed to take cover at the foot of the slope, where they bound Achior and left himlying at the bottom of the mountain and returned to their master.	13 Quelli ridiscesero al riparo del monte, legarono Achior e lo abbandonarono gettandolo a terra alle falde del monte, quindi fecero ritorno al loro signore.
14 The Israelites then came down from their town, stopped by him, unbound him and took him to Bethulia,where they brought him before the chief men of the town,	14 Gli Israeliti scesero dalla loro città, si avvicinarono a lui, lo slegarono, lo condussero in Betulia e lo presentarono ai capi della città,
15 who at that time were Uzziah son of Micah of the tribe of Simeon, Chabris son of Gothoniel andCharmis son of Melchiel.	15 che in quel tempo erano Ozia figlio di Mica della tribù di Simeone, Cabri figlio di Gotonièl e Carmi figlio di Melchièl.
16 These summoned al the elders of the town. The young men and the women also hurried to theassembly. Achior was made to stand with al the people surrounding him, and Uzziah questioned him about whathad happened.	16 Radunarono subito tutti gli anziani della città e tutti i giovani e le donne accorsero al luogo del raduno. Posero Achior in mezzo a tutta quell'adunanza e Ozia lo interrogò sull'accaduto.
17 He answered by tel ing them what had been said at Holofernes' council, and what he himself had saidin the presence of the Assyrian leaders, and how Holofernes had bragged of what he would do to the House ofIsrael.	17 Quegli riferì loro le parole del consiglio di Oloferne e tutto il discorso che Oloferne aveva pronunziato in mezzo ai capi degli Assiri e quanto aveva detto superbamente contro il popolo d'Israele.
18 At this the people fel to the ground and worshipped God.	18 Allora tutto il popolo si prostrò ad adorare Dio e alzò queste suppliche:
19 'Lord God of heaven,' they cried, 'take notice of their arrogance and have pity on the humiliation of ourrace. Look kindly today on those who are consecrated to you.'	19 "Signore, Dio del cielo, guarda la loro superbia, abbi pietà dell'umiliazione della nostra stirpe e accogli benigno in questo giorno la presenza di coloro che sono consacrati a te".
20 They then spoke reassuringly to Achior and praised him warmly.	20 Poi confortarono Achior e gli rivolsero parole di gran lode;
21 After the assembly Uzziah took him home and gave a banquet for the elders; al that night they cal edon the God of Israel for help.	21 Ozia da parte sua lo accolse dopo l'adunanza nella sua casa e offrì un banchetto a tutti gli anziani; per tutta quella notte invocarono l'aiuto del Dio d'Israele.
