David then addressed the whole assembly, 'Solomon my son, whom Yahweh has specifical y chosen,is young and immature, and the work is great; this palace is not for any human being but for Yahweh God.1 Il re Davide disse a tutta l'assemblea: "Salomone mio figlio, il solo che Dio ha scelto, è ancora giovane e debole, mentre l'impresa è grandiosa, perché la Dimora non è destinata a un uomo ma al Signore Dio.
With al the resources I can command, for the house of my God I have provided gold for what must bemade of gold, silver for what must be made of silver, bronze for what must be made of bronze, iron for what mustbe made of iron, wood for what must be made of wood, as well as cornelian for inlay work, slabs of multi-coloured mosaic, every kind of precious stone and quantities of alabaster.2 Secondo tutta la mia possibilità ho fatto preparativi per il tempio del mio Dio; ho preparato oro su oro, argento su argento, bronzo su bronzo, ferro su ferro, legname su legname, ònici, brillanti, topàzi, pietre di vario valore e pietre preziose e marmo bianco in quantità.
Furthermore, because my affections are set on the house of my God, I have also given what gold andsilver I personal y own for the house of my God, over and above everything which I have already provided for theholy Temple-3 Inoltre, per il mio amore per la casa del mio Dio, quanto possiedo in oro e in argento dò per il tempio del mio Dio, oltre quanto ho preparato per il santuario:
that is to say, three thousand talents of gold of Ophir, and seven thousand talents of refined silver foroverlaying the walls of the buildings,4 tremila talenti d'oro, d'oro di Ofir, e settemila talenti d'argento raffinato per rivestire le pareti interne,
the gold being for what must be made of gold, and the silver for what must be made of silver: and forwhatever the craftsmen must make. Who, then, is wil ing to devote himself to Yahweh's service today?'5 l'oro per gli oggetti in oro, l'argento per quelli in argento e per tutti i lavori da eseguirsi dagli artisti. Ora, chi vuole essere generoso oggi per il Signore?".
At this, the heads of families, the tribal chiefs of Israel, the commanders of the thousands and thehundreds and those who managed the king's affairs,6 Si dimostrarono volenterosi i capifamiglia, i capitribù di Israele, i capi di migliaia e di centinaia e i dirigenti degli affari del re.
volunteered a gift of five thousand talents and ten thousand darics of gold, ten thousand talents ofsilver, eighteen thousand talents of bronze and a hundred thousand talents of iron,7 Essi diedero per l'opera del tempio cinquemila talenti d'oro, diecimila darìci, diecimila talenti d'argento, diciottomila talenti di bronzo e centomila talenti di ferro.
while those who owned precious stones presented them to the treasury of the house of Yahweh in thecustody of Jehiel the Gershonite.8 Quanti si ritrovarono pietre preziose le diedero a Iechièl il Ghersonita, perché fossero depositate nel tesoro del tempio.
The people rejoiced at what these had given so readily, since they had presented their freewilofferings wholeheartedly to Yahweh. King David too was fil ed with joy.9 Il popolo gioì per la loro generosità, perché le offerte erano fatte al Signore con cuore sincero; anche il re Davide gioì vivamente.

Ora tutto proviene da te; noi, dopo averlo ricevuto dalla tua mano, te l'abbiamo ridato.
and we are guests before you, and passing visitors as were al our ancestors, our days on earthfleeting as a shadow and without hope.15 Noi siamo stranieri davanti a te e pellegrini come tutti i nostri padri. Come un'ombra sono i nostri giorni sulla terra e non c'è speranza.
Yahweh our God, all this wealth, which we have provided to build a house for your holy name, hascome from you and all belongs to you.16 Signore nostro Dio, quanto noi abbiamo preparato per costruire una casa al tuo santo nome proviene da te, è tutto tuo.

Io, con cuore retto, ho offerto spontaneamente tutte queste cose. Ora io vedo il tuo popolo qui presente portarti offerte con gioia.
Yahweh, God of Abraham, Isaac and Israel our ancestors, watch over this for ever, shape thepurpose of your people's heart and direct their hearts to you,18 Signore, Dio di Abramo, di Isacco e di Israele, nostri padri, custodisci questo sentimento per sempre nell'intimo del cuore del tuo popolo. Dirigi i loro cuori verso di te.
and give an undivided heart to Solomon my son to keep your commandments, your decrees andyour statutes, to put them all into effect and to build the palace for which I have made provision.'19 A Salomone mio figlio concedi un cuore sincero perché custodisca i tuoi comandi, le tue disposizioni e i tuoi decreti, perché eseguisca tutto ciò e costruisca l'edificio, per il quale io ho eseguito i preparativi".
