NEW JERUSALEMBIBBIA
It happened, once David had settled into his palace, that David said to the prophet Nathan, 'Here am Iliving in a cedar-wood palace, while the ark of the covenant of Yahweh is under awnings.'1 Una volta stabilitosi in casa, Davide disse al profeta Natan: "Ecco, io abito una casa di cedro mentre l'arca dell'alleanza del Signore sta sotto una tenda".
Nathan said to David, 'Do whatever you have in mind, for God is with you.'2 Natan rispose a Davide: "Fa' quanto desideri in cuor tuo, perché Dio è con te".
But that very night the word of God came to Nathan, as fol ows:3 Ora in quella medesima notte questa parola di Dio fu rivolta a Natan:
'Go and tell my servant David, "Yahweh says this: You must not build a temple for me to live in.4 "Va' a riferire a Davide mio servo: Dice il Signore: Tu non mi costruirai la casa per la mia dimora.
I have never lived in a house from the day when I brought Israel out until today, but have kepttravel ing from tent to tent and from shelter to shelter.5 Difatti io non ho mai abitato in una casa da quando feci uscire Israele dall'Egitto fino ad oggi. Io passai da una tenda all'altra e da una dimora all'altra.
In al my travels with al Israel, did I say to any of the judges of Israel, whom I had commanded toshepherd my people: Why do you not build me a cedar-wood temple?6 Durante tutto il tempo in cui ho camminato insieme con tutto Israele non ho mai detto a qualcuno dei Giudici, ai quali avevo ordinato di pascere il mio popolo: Perché non mi avete costruito una casa di cedro?
This is what you must say to my servant David: Yahweh Sabaoth says this: I took you from thepasture, from following the sheep, to be leader of my people Israel.7 Ora, riferirai al mio servo Davide: Dice il Signore degli eserciti: Io ti ho preso dal pascolo, mentre seguivi il gregge, per costituirti principe sul mio popolo Israele.
I have been with you wherever you went; I have got rid of al your enemies for you. I am going to makeyour fame like that of the greatest men on earth.8 Sono stato con te in tutte le tue imprese; ho distrutto tutti i tuoi nemici davanti a te; renderò il tuo nome come quello dei più grandi personaggi sulla terra.
I am going to provide a place for my people Israel; I shal plant them there and there they will live andnever be disturbed again; nor wil they be oppressed by the wicked as they were in former times9 Destinerò un posto per il mio popolo Israele; ivi lo pianterò perché vi si stabilisca e non debba vivere ancora nell'instabilità e i malvagi non continuino ad angariarlo come una volta,
ever since I instituted judges to govern my people Israel; I shall subdue al your enemies. Yahwehmoreover tel s you that he wil build you a dynasty.10 come quando misi i Giudici a capo di Israele. Umilierò tutti i tuoi nemici, mentre ingrandirò te. Il Signore ha intenzione di costruire a te una casa.
And when your days are over and you have gone to join your ancestors, I shall appoint your heir --who wil be one of your sons -- to succeed you, and I shall make his sovereignty secure.11 Quando i tuoi giorni saranno finiti e te ne andrai con i tuoi padri, susciterò un discendente dopo di te, uno dei tuoi figli, e gli renderò saldo il regno.
He wil build a temple for me and I shal make his throne secure for ever.12 Costui mi costruirà una casa e io gli assicurerò il trono per sempre.
I shal be his father and he wil be my son, and I shal not withdraw my favour from him, as I withdrewit from your predecessor.13 Io sarò per lui un padre e lui sarà per me un figlio; non ritirerò da lui il mio favore come l'ho ritirato dal tuo predecessore.
I shal set him over my temple and kingdom for ever and his throne wil be for ever secure." '14 Io lo farò star saldo nella mia casa, nel mio regno; il suo trono sarà sempre stabile".
Nathan related al these words and this whole revelation to David.15 Natan riferì a Davide tutte queste parole e tutta la presente visione.
King David then went in, sat down in Yahweh's presence and said: 'Who am I, Yahweh God, andwhat is my lineage, that you have led me as far as this?16 Allora il re Davide, presentatosi al Signore disse: "Chi sono io, Signore Dio, e che cos'è la mia casa perché tu mi abbia condotto fin qui?
Yet, to you, O God, this seemed too little, and now you extend your promises for your servant'sfamily into the distant future, making me see as it were a whole succession of men, and it is Yahweh Godhimself who raises it up.17 E, quasi fosse poco ciò per i tuoi occhi, o Dio, ora parli della casa del tuo servo nel lontano avvenire; mi hai fatto contemplare come una successione di uomini in ascesa, Signore Dio!
What more can David reply to you for the honour you have given to your servant? You yourself havesingled out your servant.18 Come può pretendere Davide di aggiungere qualcosa alla tua gloria? Tu conosci il tuo servo.
For your servant, and since you were so inclined, you have had the generosity to reveal al thisgreatness to come.19 Signore, per amore del tuo servo e secondo il tuo cuore hai compiuto quest'opera straordinaria per manifestare tutte le tue meraviglie.
Yahweh, there is no one like you, no God but you alone, as everything that we have heard confirms.20 Signore, non esiste uno simile a te e non c'è Dio fuori di te, come abbiamo sentito con i nostri orecchi.
Is there another people on earth like your people Israel, whom a god has proceeded to redeem, tomake them his people and to make them famous and do for them great and terrible deeds, by driving out nationsbefore your people, whom you redeemed from Egypt?
for you made your people Israel your own people for ever and you, Yahweh, became their God.22 Hai deciso che il tuo popolo Israele sia tuo popolo per sempre. Tu, Signore, sei stato il loro Dio.
'Now, Yahweh, may the promise which you have made for your servant and as regards his familyhold good for ever, and do as you have said.23 Ora, Signore, la parola che hai pronunciata sul tuo servo e sulla sua famiglia resti sempre verace; fa' come hai detto.
May it hold good, so your name wil be exalted for ever and people wil say, "Israel's God is YahwehSabaoth; he is God for Israel." Your servant David's dynasty will be secure before you24 Sia saldo e sia sempre magnificato il tuo nome! Si possa dire: Il Signore degli eserciti è Dio per Israele! La casa di Davide tuo servo sarà stabile davanti a te.
since you, my God, have disclosed to your servant that you are going to build him a dynasty. Hence, your servant has ventured to offer this prayer to you.25 Tu, Dio mio, hai rivelato al tuo servo l'intenzione di costruirgli una casa, per questo il tuo servo ha trovato l'ardire di pregare alla tua presenza.
Yes, Yahweh, you are God indeed, and you have made this generous promise to your servant.26 Ora tu, Signore, sei Dio; tu hai promesso al tuo servo tanto bene.
What is more, you have deigned to bless your servant's dynasty, so that it may remain for everbefore you; and since you, Yahweh, have blessed it, blessed will it be for ever.'27 Pertanto ti piaccia di benedire la casa del tuo servo perché sussista per sempre davanti a te, poiché quanto tu benedici è sempre benedetto".
