NEW JERUSALEMBIBBIA
Elisha had said to the woman whose son he had raised to life, 'Move away with your family, and livewhere you can in some foreign country, for Yahweh has cal ed up a famine -- it is already coming on the country-- for seven years.'1 Eliseo aveva detto alla donna a cui aveva risuscitato il figlio: "Alzati e vattene con la tua famiglia; dimora fuori del tuo paese, dovunque troverai da star bene, perché il Signore ha chiamato la carestia, che verrà sul paese per sette anni".
The woman hurried to do what the man of God had told her: she set out, she and her family, and forseven years she lived in Philistine territory.2 La donna si era alzata e aveva fatto come aveva detto l'uomo di Dio.
When the seven years were over, the woman returned from Philistine territory and went to lodge a claimwith the king for her house and land.3 Al termine dei sette anni, la donna tornò dal paese dei Filistei e andò dal re a reclamare la sua casa e il suo campo.
Now the king was talking to Gehazi, the servant of the man of God. 'Tel me', he was saying, 'al aboutthe marvels which Elisha did.'4 Il re stava parlando con Ghecazi, servo dell'uomo di Dio, e diceva: "Narrami tutte le meraviglie compiute da Eliseo".
Gehazi was just tel ing the king how Elisha had raised the dead child to life, when the woman whose sonElisha had raised lodged her claim with the king for her house and land. 'My lord king,' Gehazi said, 'this is thevery woman, and that is her son whom Elisha raised to life.'5 Costui stava narrando al re come aveva risuscitato il morto, quand'ecco si presenta al re la donna a cui aveva risuscitato il figlio, per riavere la sua casa e il suo campo. Ghecazi disse: "Re, mio signore, questa è la donna e questo è il figlio risuscitato da Eliseo".
The king questioned the woman, who told him the story. The king then delegated one of the officials toher with this order, 'See that al her property is restored to her, and al the revenue from her land from the dayshe left the country until now.'6 Il re interrogò la donna, che gli narrò il fatto.
Elisha went to Damascus. Ben-Hadad king of Aram was il , and was told, 'The man of God has come althe way to us.'7 Eliseo andò a Damasco.
Then the king said to Hazael, 'Take a present with you and go and meet the man of God; consultYahweh through him, and find out if I shal recover from my il ness.'8 Il re disse a Cazaèl: "Prendi un dono e va' incontro all'uomo di Dio e per suo mezzo interroga il Signore, per sapere se guarirò o no da questa malattia".
So Hazael went to meet Elisha, taking with him as a present the best that Damascus could offer, a loadfor forty camels. He arrived and, presenting himself, said, 'Your son Ben-Hadad king of Aram has sent me to askyou, "Shall I recover from my illness?" '9 Cazaèl gli andò incontro prendendo con sé, in regalo, tutte le cose più squisite di Damasco, con cui caricò quaranta cammelli. Arrivato, si fermò davanti a lui e gli disse: "Tuo figlio, Ben-Hadàd, re di Aram, mi ha mandato da te con la domanda: Guarirò o no da questa malattia?".
Elisha replied, 'Go and tell him, "You might recover," though Yahweh has shown me that he wilcertainly die.'10 Eliseo gli disse: "Va' a dirgli: Tu guarirai; ma il Signore mi ha mostrato che egli certamente morirà".
Then the face of the man of God went rigid, and his look grew strangely fixed, and he wept.11 Poi, con sguardo fisso, si irrigidì a lungo; alla fine l'uomo di Dio si mise a piangere.
'Why', Hazael asked, 'does my lord weep?' 'Because I know', Elisha replied, 'what harm you wil do tothe Israelites: you wil burn down their fortresses, put their picked warriors to the sword, dash their little childrento pieces, disembowel their pregnant women.'12 Cazaèl disse: "Signor mio, perché piangi?".
'But what is your servant?' Hazael said. 'How could this dog achieve anything so great?' 'In a visionfrom Yahweh,' Elisha replied, 'I have seen you king of Aram.'13 Cazaèl disse: "Ma che sono io tuo servo? Un cane potrebbe attuare questa grande predizione?". Eliseo rispose: "Il Signore mi ha mostrato che tu diventerai re di Aram".
Leaving Elisha, Hazael went back to his master who asked, 'What did Elisha say to you?' He replied,'He told me that you might recover.'14 Quegli si separò da Eliseo e ritornò dal suo padrone, che gli domandò: "Che ti ha detto Eliseo?". Rispose: "Mi ha detto: Certo guarirai".
Next day he took a blanket, soaked it in water, and spread it over his face. So died Ben-Hadad, andHazael succeeded him.15 Il giorno dopo costui prese una coperta, l'immerse nell'acqua e poi la stese sulla faccia del re che morì. Al suo posto divenne re Cazaèl.
In the fifth year of Jehoram son of Ahab, king of Israel, Jehoram son of Jehoshaphat became king ofJudah.16 Nell'anno quinto di Ioram figlio di Acab, re di Israele, divenne re Ioram figlio di Giòsafat re di Giuda.
He was thirty-two years old when he came to the throne, and he reigned for eight years in Jerusalem.17 Quando divenne re aveva trentadue anni; regnò otto anni in Gerusalemme.
He followed the example of the kings of Israel as the House of Ahab were doing; he had married one ofAhab's daughters; and he did what is displeasing to Yahweh.18 Camminò per la strada dei re di Israele, come aveva fatto la famiglia di Acab, perché sua moglie era figlia di Acab.
But Yahweh was unwil ing to destroy Judah, because of his servant David, and was faithful to thepromise which he had made him to leave him a lamp for ever in his presence.19 Il Signore, però, non volle distruggere Giuda a causa di Davide suo servo, secondo la promessa fattagli di lasciargli sempre una lampada per lui e per i suoi figli.
In his time Edom threw off the domination of Judah and set up a king for itself.20 Durante il suo regno Edom si ribellò al potere di Giuda e si elesse un re.
Jehoram crossed to Zair, and with him al the chariots . . . Under cover of dark, he and his chariotcommanders broke through the Edomites surrounding him; the people fled to their tents.21 Allora Ioram passò a Zeira con tutti i suoi carri.
Even so, Edom threw off the domination of Judah, remaining free to the present day. Libnah alsorevolted at that time.22 Edom, ribellatosi al potere di Giuda, ancora oggi è indipendente. In quel tempo anche Libna si ribellò.
The rest of the history of Jehoram, his entire career, is this not recorded in the Book of the Annals ofthe Kings of Judah?23 Le altre gesta di Ioram, tutte le sue azioni, sono descritte nel libro delle Cronache dei re di Giuda.
Then Jehoram fel asleep with his ancestors and was buried with them in the City of David; his sonAhaziah succeeded him.24 Ioram si addormentò con i suoi padri e fu sepolto con essi nella città di Davide, e al suo posto divenne re suo figlio Acazia.
In the twelfth year of Jehoram son of Ahab, king of Israel, Ahaziah son of Jehoram, king of Judah, became king.25 Nell'anno decimosecondo di Ioram figlio di Acab, re di Israele, divenne re Acazia figlio di Ioram, re di Giuda.
Ahaziah was twenty-two years old when he came to the throne, and he reigned for one year inJerusalem. His mother's name was Athaliah granddaughter of Omri king of Israel.26 Quando divenne re, Acazia aveva ventidue anni; regnò un anno in Gerusalemme.
He followed the example of the House of Ahab and did what is displeasing to Yahweh, as the House ofAhab were doing, to whom he was related by marriage.27 Imitò la condotta della casa di Acab; fece ciò che è male agli occhi del Signore, come aveva fatto la casa di Acab, perché era imparentato con la casa di Acab.
He went with Jehoram son of Ahab to make war on Hazael king of Aram at Ramoth in Gilead, but theAramaeans wounded Jehoram.28 Egli con Ioram figlio di Acab andò in guerra contro Cazaèl re di Aram, in Ramot di Gàlaad; ma gli Aramei ferirono Ioram.
King Jehoram returned to Jezreel to recover from the wounds which he had received at Ramah, fighting against Hazael king of Aram. Ahaziah son of Jehoram, king of Judah, went down to Jezreel to visitJehoram son of Ahab because he was ailing.29 Allora il re Ioram andò a curarsi in Izrèel per le ferite ricevute dagli Aramei in Ramot, mentre combatteva contro Cazaèl re di Aram. Acazia figlio di Ioram, re di Giuda, scese a visitare Ioram figlio di Acab in Izreèl, perché costui era malato.
