1 So the war dragged on between the House of Saul and the House of David, but David grew steadilystronger and the House of Saul steadily weaker.	1 La guerra tra la casa di Saul e la casa di Davide si protrasse a lungo. Davide con l'andar del tempo si faceva più forte, mentre la casa di Saul andava indebolendosi.
2 The sons born to David at Hebron were: his first-born Amnon, by Ahinoam of Jezreel;	2 In Ebron nacquero a Davide dei figli e furono: il maggiore Amnòn, nato da Achinoàm di Izreèl;
3 his second Chileab, by Abigail widow of Nabal of Carmel; the third Absalom son of Maacah, daughter ofTalmai king of Geshur;	3 il secondo Kileàb, da Abigail già moglie di Nabal da Carmel; il terzo Assalonne, nato da Maaca, figlia di Talmài re di Ghesùr;
4 the fourth Adonijah son of Haggith; the fifth Shephatiah son of Abital;	4 il quarto Adonìa nato da Agghìt; il quinto Sefatìa, figlio di Abitàl;
5 the sixth Ithream, by David's wife, Eglah. These were born to David at Hebron.	5 il sesto Itreàm, nato da Eglà moglie di Davide. Questi nacquero a Davide in Ebron.
6 This is what took place during the war between the House of Saul and the House of David. Abner tookcomplete control in the House of Saul.	6 Mentre durava la lotta tra la casa di Saul e quella di Davide, Abner era diventato potente nella casa di Saul.
7 Now, there was a concubine of Saul's called Rizpah daughter of Aiah, and Abner took her. Ishbaal saidto Abner, 'Why have you slept with my father's concubine?'	7 Saul aveva avuto una concubina chiamata Rizpà figlia di Aià. 8 At these words of Ishbaal, Abner flew into a rage. 'Am I a dog's head?' he shouted. 'Here am I, ful offaithful love towards the House of Saul your father, his brothers and his friends, not leaving you to the hands ofDavid, and now you find fault with me over a woman!	8 Abner si adirò molto per le parole di Is-Bàal e disse: "Sono io una testa di cane, di quelli di Giuda? Fino ad oggi ho usato benevolenza alla casa di Saul tuo padre, favorendo i suoi fratelli e i suoi amici, e non ti ho fatto cadere nelle mani di Davide; oggi tu mi rimproveri una colpa di donna.
9 May God bring unnameable il s on Abner, and worse ones, too, if I do not bring about what Yahweh hassworn to David:	9 Tanto faccia Dio ad Abner e anche peggio, se io non farò per Davide ciò che il Signore gli ha giurato:
10 to take the sovereignty from the House of Saul, and establish David's throne over Israel as well asJudah, from Dan to Beersheba!'	10 trasferire cioè il regno dalla casa di Saul e stabilire il trono di Davide su Israele e su Giuda, da Dan fino a Bersabea".
11 Ishbaal dared not say a single word to Abner in reply, as he was afraid of him.	11 Quegli non fu capace di rispondere una parola ad Abner, perché aveva paura di lui.
12 Abner sent messengers on his own behalf to say to David, '. . . and furthermore, come to anagreement with me and I wil give you my support to win al Israel over to you.'	12 Abner inviò subito messaggeri a Davide per dirgli: "A chi il paese?". Intendeva dire: "Fa' alleanza con me ed ecco, la mia mano sarà con te per ricondurre a te tutto Israele".
13 'Very wel ,' David said, 'I wil come to an agreement with you. I impose one condition however; you wilnot be admitted to my presence unless you bring me Michal, Saul's daughter, when you come to see me.'	13 Rispose: "Bene! Io farò alleanza con te. Però ho una cosa da chiederti ed è questa: non verrai alla mia presenza, se prima non mi condurrai davanti Mikal figlia di Saul, quando verrai a vedere il mio volto".
14 David then sent messengers to say to Ishbaal son of Saul, 'Give me back my wife Michal, whom Iacquired for a hundred foreskins of the Philistines.'	14 Davide spedì messaggeri a Is-Bàal, figlio di Saul, intimandogli: "Restituisci mia moglie Mikal, che feci mia sposa al prezzo di cento membri di Filistei".
15 So Ishbaal sent for her to be taken from her husband Paltiel son of Laish.	15 Is-Bàal mandò incaricati a toglierla al suo marito, Paltiel figlio di Lais.
16 Her husband set off with her and fol owed her, weeping as he went, as far as Bahurim; but Abner saidto him, 'Go back!' and he went.	16 Suo marito la seguì, camminando e piangendo dietro di lei fino a Bacurim. Poi Abner gli disse: "Torna indietro!" e quegli tornò.
17 Now Abner conferred with the elders of Israel. 'For a long time now,' he said, 'you have wanted Davidas your king.	17 Intanto Abner rivolse questo discorso agli anziani d'Israele: "Da tempo voi ricercate Davide come vostro re.
18 Now you must take action, since Yahweh has said of David, "By the hand of my servant David I shaldeliver my people Israel from the clutches of the Philistines and al their enemies." '	18 Ora mettetevi al lavoro, perché il Signore ha detto e confermato a Davide: Per mezzo di Davide mio servo libererò Israele mio popolo dalle mani dei Filistei e dalle mani di tutti i suoi nemici".
19 Abner also spoke to the men of Benjamin and then went to Hebron to tel David everything that hadbeen agreed by Israel and the House of Benjamin.	19 Abner ebbe colloqui anche con gli uomini di Beniamino. Poi Abner tornò solo da Davide in Ebron a riferirgli quanto era stato approvato da Israele e da tutta la casa di Beniamino.
20 Abner, accompanied by twenty men, came to David at Hebron, and David held a feast for Abner andthe men who were with him.	20 Abner venne dunque a Davide in Ebron con venti uomini e Davide fece servire un banchetto ad Abner e ai suoi uomini.
21 Abner then said to David, 'I must get up and go. I am going to rally al Israel to my lord the king, so thatthey will make an alliance with you, and you wil reign over al that you desire.' So David al owed Abner to go,and he went unmolested.	21 Abner disse poi a Davide: "Sono pronto! Vado a radunare tutto Israele intorno al re mio signore. Essi faranno alleanza con te e regnerai su quanto tu desideri". Davide congedò poi Abner, che partì in pace.
22 David's retainers were just then coming back with Joab from a raid, bringing a great quantity of bootywith them. Abner was no longer with David at Hebron, since David had allowed him to go, and he had goneunmolested.	22 Ed ecco, gli uomini di Davide e Ioab tornavano da una scorreria e portavano con sé grande bottino. Abner non era più con Davide in Ebron, perché questi lo aveva congedato, ed egli era partito in pace.
23 When Joab and the whole company with him had arrived, Joab was told, 'Abner son of Ner has beento the king, and the king has al owed Abner to go away unmolested.'	23 Quando arrivarono Ioab e la sua truppa, fu riferito a Ioab: "È venuto dal re Abner figlio di Ner ed egli l'ha congedato e se n'è andato in pace".
24 Joab then went to the king and said, 'What have you done? Abner comes to you and you let him goaway and now he has gone-why?	24 Ioab si presentò al re e gli disse: "Che hai fatto? Ecco, è venuto Abner da te; perché l'hai congedato ed egli se n'è andato?
25 You know Abner son of Ner! He came to trick you, to discover your every move, to find out what youare doing.'	25 Non sai chi è Abner figlio di Ner? È venuto per ingannarti, per conoscere le tue mosse, per sapere ciò che fai".
26 Joab left David's presence and sent messengers after Abner and these, unknown to David, broughthim back from the storage-wel at Sirah.	26 Ioab si allontanò da Davide e mandò messaggeri dietro Abner e lo fece tornare indietro dalla cisterna di Sira, senza che Davide lo sapesse.
27 When Abner reached Hebron, Joab took him aside in the town-gate, as if to have a quiet word withhim, and there struck him a mortal blow in the bel y to avenge the blood of his brother Asahel.	27 Abner tornò a Ebron e Ioab lo prese in disparte in mezzo alla porta, come per parlargli in privato, e qui lo colpì al basso ventre e lo uccise, per vendicare il sangue di Asaèl suo fratello.
28 Afterwards, when David heard of this, he said, 'I and my kingdom are for ever innocent before Yahwehof the blood of Abner son of Ner;	28 Davide seppe più tardi la cosa e protestò: "Sono innocente io e il mio regno per sempre davanti al Signore del sangue di Abner figlio di Ner.
29 may it fal on the head of Joab and on al his family! May the House of Joab never be free of menafflicted with haemorrhage or a virulent skin-disease, whose strength is in the distaff, who fall by the sword, wholack food.'	29 Ricada sulla testa di Ioab e su tutta la casa di suo padre. Nella casa di Ioab non manchi mai chi soffra gonorrea o sia colpito da lebbra o maneggi il fuso, chi cada di spada o chi sia senza pane".
30 (Joab and his brother Abishai had murdered Abner because he killed their brother Asahel at the battleof Gibeon.)	30 Ioab e suo fratello Abisài avevano trucidato Abner, perché aveva ucciso Asaèl loro fratello a Gàbaon in battaglia.
31 David then said to Joab and the whole company with him, 'Tear your clothes, put on sackcloth, andmourn over Abner,' and King David walked behind the bier.	31 Davide disse a Ioab e a tutta la gente che era con lui: "Stracciatevi le vesti, vestitevi di sacco e fate lutto davanti ad Abner". Anche il re Davide seguiva la bara.
32 They buried Abner at Hebron, and the king wept aloud on his grave, and the people al wept too.	32 Seppellirono Abner in Ebron e il re levò la sua voce e pianse davanti al sepolcro di Abner; pianse tutto il popolo.
33 The king made this lament over Abner: Should Abner have died as a brute dies?	33 Il re intonò un lamento funebre su Abner e disse: "Come muore un insensato, doveva dunque Abner morire?
34 Your hands were not tied, your feet not chained; you fel as a man falls at the hands of criminals. Andal the people wept for him louder than ever.	34 Le tue mani non erano state legate, i tuoi piedi non erano stati stretti in catene! Sei caduto come si cade davanti ai malfattori!". Tutto il popolo riprese a piangere su di lui.
35 The people then al tried to persuade David to have some food while it was still daylight, but Davidswore this oath, 'May God bring unnameable il s on me, and worse il s, too, if I taste bread or anything whateveruntil the sun is down!'	35 Tutto il popolo venne a invitare Davide perché prendesse cibo, mentre era ancora giorno; ma Davide giurò: "Tanto mi faccia Dio e anche di peggio, se io gusterò pane o qualsiasi altra cosa prima del tramonto del sole".
36 Al the people took note of this and it pleased them; indeed, everything the king did pleased thepeople.	36 Tutto il popolo notò la cosa e la trovò giusta; quanto fece il re ebbe l'approvazione del popolo intero.
37 That day, al the people and al Israel understood that the king had had no part in the murder of Abnerson of Ner.	37 Tutto il popolo, cioè tutto Israele, fu convinto in quel giorno che la morte di Abner figlio di Ner non era stata provocata dal re.
38 The king said to his retainers, 'Do you not realise that a prince, a great man, has fal en in Israel today?	38 Disse ancora il re ai suoi ministri: "Sappiate che oggi è caduto un capo, un grande in Israele. Io, oggi, mi sono comportato dolcemente, sebbene già consacrato re, mentre questi uomini, i figli di Zeruià, sono stati più duri di me. Provveda il Signore a trattare il malvagio secondo la sua malvagità".
39 I, though anointed king, am weak at present, and these men, the sons of Zeruiah, are too strong forme. May Yahweh repay the criminal as his crime deserves!'
