NEW JERUSALEMBIBBIA
From Egypt Abram returned to the Negeb with his wife and al he possessed, and Lot with him.1 Dall'Egitto Abram ritornò nel Negheb con la moglie e tutti i suoi averi; Lot era con lui.
Abram was very rich in livestock, silver and gold.2 Abram era molto ricco in bestiame, argento e oro.
By stages he went from the Negeb to Bethel, where he had first pitched his tent, between Bethel andAi,3 Poi di accampamento in accampamento egli dal Negheb si portò fino a Betel, fino al luogo dove era stata già prima la sua tenda, tra Betel e Ai,
at the place where he had formerly erected the altar. There Abram invoked the name of Yahweh.4 al luogo dell'altare, che aveva là costruito prima: lì Abram invocò il nome del Signore.
Lot, who was travelling with Abram, had flocks and cattle of his own, and tents too.5 Ma anche Lot, che andava con Abram, aveva greggi e armenti e tende.
The land was not sufficient to accommodate them both at once, for they had too many possessions tobe able to live together.6 Il territorio non consentiva che abitassero insieme, perché avevano beni troppo grandi e non potevano abitare insieme.
Dispute broke out between the herdsmen of Abram's livestock and those of Lot. (The Canaanites andPerizzites were living in the country at the time.)7 Per questo sorse una lite tra i mandriani di Abram e i mandriani di Lot, mentre i Cananei e i Perizziti abitavano allora nel paese.
Accordingly Abram said to Lot, 'We do not want discord between us or between my herdsmen andyours, for we are kinsmen.8 Abram disse a Lot: "Non vi sia discordia tra me e te, tra i miei mandriani e i tuoi, perché noi siamo fratelli.
Is not the whole land open before you? Go in the opposite direction to me: if you take the left, I shalgo right; if you take the right, I shal go left.'9 Non sta forse davanti a te tutto il paese? Sepàrati da me. Se tu vai a sinistra, io andrò a destra; se tu vai a destra, io andrò a sinistra".
Looking round, Lot saw all the Jordan plain, irrigated everywhere -- this was before Yahwehdestroyed Sodom and Gomorrah-like the garden of Yahweh or the land of Egypt, as far as Zoar.10 Allora Lot alzò gli occhi e vide che tutta la valle del Giordano era un luogo irrigato da ogni parte - prima che il Signore distruggesse Sòdoma e Gomorra -; era come il giardino del Signore, come il paese d'Egitto, fino ai pressi di Zoar.
So Lot chose all the Jordan plain for himself and moved off eastwards. Thus they parted company:11 Lot scelse per sé tutta la valle del Giordano e trasportò le tende verso oriente. Così si separarono l'uno dall'altro:
Abram settled in the land of Canaan; Lot settled among the cities of the plain, pitching his tents onthe outskirts of Sodom.12 Abram si stabilì nel paese di Canaan e Lot si stabilì nelle città della valle e piantò le tende vicino a Sòdoma.
Now the people of Sodom were vicious and great sinners against Yahweh.13 Ora gli uomini di Sòdoma erano perversi e peccavano molto contro il Signore.
Yahweh said to Abram after Lot had parted company from him, 'Look al round from where you are,to north and south, to east and west,14 Allora il Signore disse ad Abram, dopo che Lot si era separato da lui: "Alza gli occhi e dal luogo dove tu stai spingi lo sguardo verso il settentrione e il mezzogiorno, verso l'oriente e l'occidente.
for al the land within sight I shal give to you and your descendants for ever.15 Tutto il paese che tu vedi, io lo darò a te e alla tua discendenza per sempre.
I shal make your descendants like the dust on the ground; when people succeed in counting thespecks of dust on the ground, then they wil be able to count your descendants too!16 Renderò la tua discendenza come la polvere della terra: se uno può contare la polvere della terra, potrà contare anche i tuoi discendenti.
On your feet! Travel the length and breadth of the country, for I mean to give it to you.'17 Alzati, percorri il paese in lungo e in largo, perché io lo darò a te".
So Abram moved his tent and went to settle at the Oak of Mamre, at Hebron, and there he built analtar to Yahweh.18 Poi Abram si spostò con le sue tende e andò a stabilirsi alle Querce di Mamre, che sono ad Ebron, e vi costruì un altare al Signore.
